Guarding food safety with conventional and up-conversion near-infrared fluorescent sensors

Abstract:Recent efforts show that nanomaterials with near-infrared (NIR) fluorescece properties are highly-promising in the quest for a next-generation of food toxicity sensors.Exploiting NIR photoluminescence in the context of food security assessment is effective in the detecting both inorganic and organic contaminants.Future perspectives and challenges concerning the use of NIR photoluminescence for food safety detection, with particular emphasis on possible future directions for expanding and augmenting current strategies, are discussed.Acknowledged by the World Health Organisation (WHO), over 200 diseases ranging from mild to fatal are linked to the contaminative food products subjected to physical, chemical, or biological contamination. Nevertheless, conventional methods for health hazards determination in foodstuffs have problems coping with the sensitivity requirements imposed by latest-hour regulations in the field. Additionally, their availability is wildly limited by aspects such as instrument dimension, prohibitive cost, detection complexity and required operational knowledge.This review provides an overview of recent efforts based on this valuable class of near infrared (NIR) photoluminescence detection sensors, introducing important endeavors that have targeted the precise detection of various inorganic and organic contaminants, including hydrogen sulfide, cyanide anions, mycotoxins, antibiotic residues, etc. Meanwhile, challenges which lie en route as stumbling blocks for such sensors to reach the next level of maturity and become more available, are systematically discussed and enunciated.Ingenious detection sensors that rely on conventional or up-conversion photoluminescence in the NIR regions have been an emerging topic. To date, such sensors have been demonstrated as a promising detection candidate with high efficiency, ease to implement, and flexibility in terms of the problem processing, thereby promising significant contributions to expand the current state of the art in food security.Download : Download high-res image (182KB)Download : Download full-size image
