Abstract:AbstractPrecise detection of low‐dose X‐ and γ‐radiations remains a challenge and is particularly important for studying biological effects under low‐dose ionizing radiation, safety control in medical radiation treatment, survey of environmental radiation background, and monitoring cosmic radiations. We report here a photoluminescent uranium organic framework, whose photoluminescence intensity can be accurately correlated with the exposure dose of X‐ or γ‐radiations. This allows for precise and instant detection of ionizing radiations down to the level of 10−4 Gy, representing a significant improvement on the detection limit of approximately two orders of magnitude, compared to other chemical dosimeters reported up to now. The electron paramagnetic resonance analysis suggests that with the exposure to radiations, the carbonyl double bonds break affording oxo‐radicals that can be stabilized within the conjugated uranium oxalate‐carboxylate sheet. This gives rise to a substantially enhanced equatorial bonding of the uranyl(VI) ions as elucidated by the single‐crystal structure of the γ‐ray irradiated material, and subsequently leads to a very effective photoluminescence quenching through phonon‐assisted relaxation. The quenched sample can be easily recovered by heating, enabling recycled detection for multiple runs.

Abstract:Uranium is not only a strategic resource for the nuclear industry but also a global contaminant with high toxicity. Although several strategies have been established for detecting uranyl ions in water, searching for new uranium sensor material with great sensitivity, selectivity, and stability remains a challenge. We introduce here a hydrolytically stable mesoporous terbium(III)-based MOF material compound 1, whose channels are as large as 27 Å × 23 Å and are equipped with abundant exposed Lewis basic sites, the luminescence intensity of which can be efficiently and selectively quenched by uranyl ions. The detection limit in deionized water reaches 0.9 μg/L, far below the maximum contamination standard of 30 μg/L in drinking water defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, making compound 1 currently the only MOF material that can achieve this goal. More importantly, this material exhibits great capability in detecting uranyl ions in natural water systems such as lake water and seawater with pH being adjusted to 4, where huge excesses of competing ions are present. The uranyl detection limits in Dushu Lake water and in seawater were calculated to be 14.0 and 3.5 μg/L, respectively. This great detection capability originates from the selective binding of uranyl ions onto the Lewis basic sites of the MOF material, as demonstrated by synchrotron radiation extended X-ray adsorption fine structure, X-ray adsorption near edge structure, and first principles calculations, further leading to an effective energy transfer between the uranyl ions and the MOF skeleton.

Abstract:Uranium is one of the most important radionuclides but could also cause potential health risks to human beings due to its radioactive and chemical toxicity. It is an urgent task to develop a simple but efficient sensing platform for UO 2 2+ , the main existing form of uranium in environment. Herein, a rhodamine-functionalized carbon dots (o-CDs-Rho) was synthesized and applied for UO 2 2+ sensing through a simple but novel aggregation-enhanced FRET strategy. The weak FRET efficiency (16.2%) of o-CDs-Rho in dispersed solution is significantly enhanced (>77.2%) after UO 2 2+ triggered aggregation due to the increased number of rhodamine acceptors around each CDs from dispersed 80 to aggregated 2800. This is the first ratiometric fluorescence sensor with an inverse change of fluorescence intensity at dual emission wavelengths under single-wavelength excitation for UO 2 2+ . Under optimized experiment conditions, o-CDs-Rho nanosensor shows a low detection limit of 53 nM and excellent selectivity. Meanwhile, the as-prepared nanosensor also shows high reliability and stability. These excellent properties make it successful in detecting uranium content in real samples.

Uranyl-specific binding at a functionalised interface: a chemophotonic fibre optic sensor platform

Abstract:Detection of radiological materials in the solution phase is restricted by conventional radiation-counting techniques owing to extreme attenuation. Chemical sensing of the resultant radiological species such as uranyl UO(2)(2+) is possible on the surface of a plastic or glass fibre optic. A dihydroxy isoamethryin complex is tethered to the fibre surface which has a large extinction coefficient (119 000 M(-1) cm(-1) at lambda = 439 nm) and changes colour upon binding UO(2)(2+). The spectral changes are greater on the surface than in solution and binding is specific to UO(2)(2+) with small interferences from Gd(3+). Monitoring the spectral response in three detector bands in the red, green and blue enable the optical power change to be measured with sensitivities of 1 mdB, allowing UO(2)(2+) to be detected confidently at 50-100 ppb levels. Real-time kinetic analysis enables discrimination between the target species and possible interferents.

Abstract:The combination of high atomic number and high oxidation state in UVI materials gives rise to both high X-ray attenuation efficiency and intense green luminescence originating from ligand-to-metal charge transfer. These two features suggest that UVI materials might act as superior X-ray scintillators, but this postulate has remained substantially untested. Now the first observation of intense X-ray scintillation in a uranyl-organic framework (SCU-9) that is observable by the naked eye is reported. Combining the advantage in minimizing the non-radiative relaxation during the X-ray excitation process over those of inorganic salts of uranium, SCU-9 exhibits a very efficient X-ray to green light luminescence conversion. The luminescence intensity shows an essentially linear correlation with the received X-ray intensity, and is comparable with that of commercially available CsI:Tl. SCU-9 possesses an improved X-ray attenuation efficiency (E>20 keV) as well as enhanced radiation resistance and decreased hygroscopy compared to CsI:Tl.

Abstract:Extensive application of nuclear energy has caused widespread environmental uranium contamination. New detection approaches without complicated sample pretreatment and precision instruments are in demand for on-site and in-time determination of uranyl ions in environmental monitoring, especially in an emergency situation. In this work, a simple and effective fluorescent sensor (Z)-N'-hydroxy-4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)benzimidamide (TPE-A) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) character was established and studied. It could realize to detect UO2 2+ via quenching the fluorescence of its aggregation-induced emission, with good selectivity and sensitivity. Such strategy shows a wide linear range from 5.0 × 10−8 mol/L to 4.5 × 10−7 mol/L (R 2 = 0.9988) with exceptional sensitivity reaching 4.7 × 10−9 mol/L, which is far below the limit for uranium in drinking water (30 μg/L, ca. 1.1 × 10−7 mol/L) stipulated by the WHO. A response time less than four minutes make it rapid for uranyl ion measurement. It was applied for detection of uranyl ion in spiked river water samples with recoveries in the range of 98.7%-104.0%, comparable to those obtained by ICP-MS. With the advantages of portable apparatus, rapid detection process and high sensitivity, TPE-A can serve as a promising fluorescent sensor for the detection of UO2 2+ in environmental water samples.

Abstract:The accurate detection of UV radiation is required in a wide range of chemical industries and environmental or biological related applications. Conventional methods taking advantage of semiconductor photodetectors suffer from several drawbacks such as sophisticated synthesis and manufacturing procedure, not being able to measure the accumulated UV dosage as well as high defect density in the material. Searching for new strategies or materials serving as precise UV dosage sensor with extremely low detection limit is still highly desirable. In this work, a radiation resistant uranium coordination polymer [UO2(L)(DMF)] (L = 5-nitroisophthalic acid, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, denoted as compound 1) was successfully synthesized through mild solvothermal method and investigated as a unique UV probe with the detection limit of 2.4 × 10-7 J. On the basis of the UV dosage dependent luminescence spectra, EPR analysis, single crystal structure investigation, and the DFT calculation, the UV-induced radical quenching mechanism was confirmed. Importantly, the generated radicals are of significant stability which offers the opportunity for measuring the accumulated UV radiation dosage. Furthermore, the powder material of compound 1 was further upgraded into membrane material without loss in luminescence intensity to investigate the real application potentials. To the best of our knowledge, compound 1 represents the most sensitive coordination polymer based UV dosage probe reported to date.

Abstract:Uranium, regarded as an important element in nuclear fission energy schemes, is harmful to public health owing to its high toxicity and radioactivity. Herein, a novel fluorescent probe (SC4A@Tb 3+ ) was developed using a one-step liquid-phase method with 4-sulfocalix[4]arene (SC4A) and rare earth–metal ions (Tb 3+ ) as precursors to realize the accurate monitoring of uranyl ion (UO 2 2+ ) detection. Based on the dynamic quenching mechanism, the SC4A@Tb 3+ fluorescence quenching sensor for UO 2 2+ detection was in the linear range of 0–0.36 μM, with a detection limit of 20 μg·L −1 , and successfully quantified UO 2 2+ in water and human serum samples. These results suggest that SC4A@Tb 3+ is a potential sensing material for UO 2 2+ detection.

Abstract:To avoid environmental and biological impacts linked to uranium-contaminating solutions, the development of sensitive and selective uranium detection techniques for solutions has become a critical issue. Although various kinds of detection methodologies have been developed, they are still not totally satisfactory in terms of simplicity, efficiency, and versatility. In this work, a novel chemosensor bearing a diaza-18-crown-6 ether and two naphthalimides (PN-DCE) was synthesized for simple, selective, rapid, and cost-effective detection of uranyl ions (UO2 2+) and characterized by 1H-, 13C-NMR, FT-IR, ESI-TOF-MS, and elemental analysis. Effects of various metal ions (Na+, K+, Cs+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, La3+, and UO2 2+) on the 1H-NMR chemical shifts of PN-DCE were examined, and selective complexation of UO2 2+ with PN-DCE was verified. Moreover, the stoichiometry of the UO2 2+/PN-DCE complex was elucidated from the correlation between UO2 2+ concentration and the peak area ratios of the 1H-NMR spectra of PN-DCE, indicating the formation of 1:1 and 2:1 complexes depending on the concentration ratios of UO2 2+ and PN-DCE ([UO2 2+]/[PN-DCE]). Furthermore, visual and fluorescence spectroscopic methods showed that drastic fluorescence quenching of PN-DCE is induced by adding UO2 2+ and not other metal ions. From a combination of quenching percentages estimated from fluorometric titration experiments and Stern–Volmer analysis, the detection limit of PN-DCE for UO2 2+ was successfully determined to be 4.13 μM, which is almost comparable to the maximum permissible concentration of uranium in wastewater discharged from facilities related to the utilization of nuclear energy. Based on these results, we conclude that the developed PN-DCE would act as a sensing material for UO2 2+ in waste solutions.

Abstract:Radiation dosimeters displaying conspicuous response of irradiance are highly desirable, owing to the growing demand of monitoring high-energy radiation and environmental exposure. Herein, we present a case of dosimetry based on a discrete nanocluster, [Th 6 (OH) 4 (O) 4 (H 2 O) 6 ](TPC) 8 (HCOO) 4 ∙4DMF∙H 2 O (Th-SINAP-100), by judiciously incorporating heavy Th 6 polynuclear centers as radiation attenuator and organic linkers as photo-responsive sensor. Interestingly, dual-module photochromic transitions upon multiple external stimuli including UV, β-ray, and γ-ray are integrated into this single material. The striking color change, and more significantly, the visible color transition of luminescence in response to accumulating radiation dose allow an on-site quantitative platform for naked-eye detection of ionization radiations over a broad range (1–80 kGy). Single crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory calculations reveal that the dual-module photochromism can be attributed to the π(TPC) → π*(TPC) intermolecular charge transfer driven by enhanced π-π stacking interaction between the adjacent TPC moieties upon irradiation.
A Layered Uranyl Coordination Polymer with UV Detection Sensitivity, Stability, and Reusability

Abstract:The sensitive detection of UV light is critical in industrial production and for personal protection, and the aim of this research is to develop novel UV detection materials. The uranyl unit generally exhibits relatively high UV absorption efficiency and strong fluorescence intensity. Hence in this work, a uranyl coordination polymer compound [(TEA)2(UO2)5(PhPC)6] (TEA = tetraethylammonium ion, PhPC = (2-carboxyethyl)phenylphosphinic acid, denoted as UPhPC-1) was successfully synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The structural analysis of UPhPC-1 based on the single crystal XRD data elucidates that there are three crystallographically unique uranyl centers. Two uranyl units are in the pentagonal bipyramidal geometry, while the third one is in the tetragonal bipyramidal geometry. All three uranyl units are connected by the ligands to form infinite uranyl layers in the [bc] plane, which are packed via hydro-gen bonding networks and π-π interactions to yield the overall layered structure. The stability test results of UPhPC-1 demonstrate that the compound exhibits good thermal and hydrolytic stability with high radiation resistance. Moreover, results of the UV irradiation experiments show that the intrinsic luminescence of UPhPC-1 is highly sensitive to 365 nm UV irradiation with a low detection limit and a fast response rate. A negative correlation between the emission intensi-ty and the UV irradiation dosage was then established. The electron paramagnetic resonance data analysis strongly supports the production of radicals in UPhPC-1 under UV radiation, which leads to the partial quenching of the uranyl fluorescence. Furthermore, the radicals in the quenched sample can be readily eliminated by heating, resulting in the recovery of the photoluminescence intensity of UPhPC-1. The current results suggest suitable application potential of UPhPC-1 in the field of quantitative UV detection.

Abstract:A ratiometric fluorescence detection method for trace amount of uranyl ion (UO22+) was developed in this study, based on aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics of 3-hydroxyflavone salicylaldehyde azine (HFSA) and luminescent signal of UO22+-HFSA complex in soluble state. The fluorescent ratio (I457/I534) was linearly related to the concentration of UO22+ in the range of 0.5–20 ppb (part per billion). Analytical data showed that a detection limit of 0.5 ppb was achieved with the relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) 1.3% (n=5). The proposed method could also be utilized for imaging UO22+ in living cells by ratiometric fluorescence changes.

Abstract:Uranium is a key fuel for nuclear reactions, but it also causes serious public health concerns to human beings when leaked into the environment. Exploring new strategies for simultaneous uranium detection and extraction is highly desirable for public health and environmental protection. Herein, a hydroxyl-functionalized 3D covalent organic framework (termed TAPM-DHBD) with strong fluorescence and 3D interconnected pore channels is synthesized and evaluated for uranium detection and extraction. TAPM-DHBD exhibits an exceptional uranium extraction capacity of 955.3 mg g −1 as well as fast kinetics due to the plentiful selective binding sites on the extremely accessible pore channels of 3D interconnected micropore skeleton. Interestingly, due to the signal amplification of the 3D conjugated skeleton, it has a rapid-response time of 2 s and an ultra-low detection limit of 4.08 nM UO 2 2+ suitable for sensitive and on-site monitoring the radioactive uranium contamination of the extracted water. Furthermore, TAPM-DHBD exhibits excellent regenerable performance at least six cycles. This study provides a new strategy for constructing high-performance 3D COFs for radioactive contamination monitoring and strategic nuclides extraction.

A Novel Turn-On Fluorescence Probe Based on Cu(II) Functionalized Metal–Organic Frameworks for Visual Detection of Uric Acid

Abstract:As an important biomarker in urine, the level of uric acid is of importance for human health. In this work, a Cu(II) functionalized metal–organic framework (Cu2+@Tb-MOFs) is designed and developed as a novel fluorescence probe for wide-range uric acid detection in human urine. The study shows that this fluorescence platform demonstrated excellent pH-independent stability, high water tolerance, and good thermal stability. Based on the strong interaction between metal ions and uric acid, the designed Cu2+@Tb-MOFs can be employed as efficient turn-on fluorescent probes for the detection of uric acid with wide detection range (0~104 μM) and high sensitivity (LOD = 0.65 μM). This probe also demonstrates an anti-interference property, as other species coexisted, and the possibility for recycling. The sensing mechanisms are further discussed at length. More importantly, we experimentally constructed a molecular logic gate operation based on this fluorescence probe for intelligent detection of uric acid. These results suggest the Cu(II) functionalized metal–organic framework can act as a prominent candidate for personalized monitoring of the concentration of uric acid in the human urine system.

Assembly of protein-directed fluorescent gold nanoclusters for high-sensitivity detection of uranyl ions

Abstract:Uranium is a key element in the nuclear industry, whose accidental release causes health and environmental problems. In this paper, a protein-directed fluorescent sensor with aggregation-induced emission characteristics (gold nanoclusters@ovalbumin, AuNCs@OVA) was synthesized for the detection of UO22+ with high sensitivity and selectivity. The sensor exhibited good fluorescence stability, and its fluorescence intensity could be selectively enhanced by UO22+. Based on FT-IR and XPS analyses, the increase in fluorescence intensity of AuNCs@OVA after the addition of UO22+ was attributed to aggregation induced by the complexation between UO22+ and the amino, carboxyl, hydroxyl, and phosphate groups of ovalbumin. The detection limit was determined to be 34.4 nM, and the sensor showed excellent ion selectivity for UO22+. Abstract:As is known to all, uranium is regarded as an important hazardous element in drinking water and extremely limited by the World Health Organization. To realize the accurate monitoring of uranyl in drinking water, an efficient strategy for designing an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor with a low ECL potential as well as high sensitivity and selectivity is reported in this work. In detail, a donor–acceptor type structure is built in polymer dots (Pdots) to obtain a low ECL potential and long-wavelength absorbance waves to give a resonance energy transfer process from uranyl to Pdots, which is beneficial for developing a uranyl ECL sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity. The obtained Pdots are modified with ssDNA chains to be prepared into a uranyl sensor, which gives a quite low limit of detection of 6.4 ng/L as well as excellent selectivity. Furthermore, an accurate determination is then realized in practical tap water samples. This work provides a novel strategy for designing efficient ECL sensors for trace uranyl ion monitoring in drinking water, indicating its significance in environmental and public security fields.

Abstract:A ratiometric fluorescence detection method for trace amount of uranyl ion (UO22+) was developed in this study, based on aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics of 3-hydroxyflavone salicylaldehyde azine (HFSA) and luminescent signal of UO22+-HFSA complex in soluble state. The fluorescent ratio (I457/I534) was linearly related to the concentration of UO22+ in the range of 0.5–20 ppb (part per billion). Analytical data showed that a detection limit of 0.5 ppb was achieved with the relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) 1.3% (n=5). The proposed method could also be utilized for imaging UO22+ in living cells by ratiometric fluorescence changes.

Abstract:Detection and remediation of radioactive components have become the focus of worldwide research interest due to the ever-increasing generation of nuclear waste and the concerns on nuclear accidents. Among the numerous radionuclides, uranium and its isotopes receive the most attention because of their high proportion in nuclear waste and long half-life. Herein, a highly luminescent terbium-organic framework, formulated as [Tb4(C29O8H17)2(NO3)4(DMF)4(H2O)4]·4H2O·8.5DMF (YTU-100), with exceptional sensitivity and selectivity toward uranium was successfully prepared. The material exhibits fast adsorption kinetics and moderate sorption capacity. Interestingly, the luminescence intensity variation highly correlates to the amount of adsorbed uranium, which results in a quantitative, accurate, and selective uranium detection manner. The detection limits in deionized water and tap water were determined to be 1.07 and 0.75 ppb, respectively, which are lower than the US Environmental Protection Agency standard of the maximum contamination of uranium in drinking water. YTU-100 offers an alternative approach for building multifunctional MOFs used for simultaneous detection and removal of uranium from aqueous solutions.
