Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have garnered attention as a pressing environmental issue due to their enduring presence and suspected adverse health effects. This study assessed the rejection or removal efficacy of PFAS by commercial reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes and examined the impacts of surfactants, ion valency and solution temperature that are inadequately explored. The results reveal that the presence of cationic surfactants such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) increased the rejection of two selected PFAS compounds, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), by binding with negatively charged PFAS and preventing them from passing through membrane pores via size exclusion, whereas the presence of anionic surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) increased the PFAS rejection because the increased electrostatic repulsion prevented PFAS from approaching and adsorbing onto the membrane surface. Moreover, aqueous ions (e.g., Al 3+ and PO 4 3− ) with higher ion valency enabled higher rejection of PFOA and PFBA through increased effective molecular size and increased electronegativity. Finally, only high solution temperature at 45 °C significantly reduced PFAS rejection efficiency because of the thermally expanded membrane pores and thus the increased leakage of PFAS. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the various factors impacting PFAS rejection in commercial RO and NF processes. These findings are crucial for developing efficient PFAS removal methods and optimizing existing treatment systems, thereby contributing significantly to the ongoing efforts to combat PFAS contamination.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been ubiquitously detected in the aquatic environment which poses a risk for human exposure. The recalcitrant behavior of PFAS to most traditional water treatment processes calls for development of novel or modified treatment approaches for effective PFAS elimination. Currently, high-pressure membrane systems, including nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) are among the most promising and readily applied technologies for PFAS removal. In this review, we summarized peer-reviewed scientific articles on the development and use of 20 different types of commercial and 6 synthesized/modified NF and RO membranes in terms of PFAS removal efficacy. Synthesizing of existing knowledge shows that under environmentally relevant pH and concentration, NF and RO can effectively remove PFAS from water. The impact of PFAS molecular weight (MW) and functionality, membrane characteristics, feed water constitution, natural organic matters and operational conditions were systematically reviewed and evaluated. Moving forward, we recommend additional research dedicated to understanding the behaviors of PFAS alternatives and other overlooked compounds (e.g., PFAS with chain length C 2 and C3) during NF and RO processes. Further, it is critical to develop or optimize existing membrane products with strong selectivity for specific PFAS species, while being resistant to fouling. Overall, this review is expected to assist researchers and water quality managers investigating membrane processes for PFAS removal.

Abstract:Size exclusion plays a crucial role in the rejection of PFAS by reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF). Additionally, electrostatic interactions become significant when PFAS molecules are smaller than the pores in the NF membrane. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are now widely found in aquatic ecosystems, including sources of drinking water and portable water, due to their increasing prevalence. Among different PFAS treatment or separation technologies, nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) both yield high rejection efficiencies (>95%) of diverse PFAS in water; however, both technologies are affected by many intrinsic and extrinsic factors. This study evaluated the rejection of PFAS of different carbon chain length (e.g., PFOA and PFBA) by two commercial RO and NF membranes under different operational conditions (e.g., applied pressure and initial PFAS concentration) and feed solution matrixes, such as pH (4–10), salinity (0‐ to 1000‐mM NaCl), and organic matters (0–10 mM). We further performed principal component analysis (PCA) to demonstrate the interrelationships of molecular weight (213–499 g·mol−1), membrane characteristics (RO or NF), feed water matrices, and operational conditions on PFAS rejection. Our results confirmed that size exclusion is a primary mechanism of PFAS rejection by RO and NF, as well as the fact that electrostatic interactions are important when PFAS molecules have sizes less than the NF membrane pores. Practitioner Points Two commercial RO and NF membranes were both evaluated to remove 10 different PFAS. High transmembrane pressures facilitated permeate recovery and PFAS rejection by RO. Electrostatic repulsion and pore size exclusion are dominant rejection mechanisms for PFAS removal. pH, ionic strength, and organic matters affected PFAS rejection. Mechanisms of PFAS rejection with RO/NF membranes were explained by PCA analysis.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), that are widely used in different industrial and commercial activities, have become emerging contaminants of concern. Thus, the evaluation of PFAS presence in diverse environmental matrices is of paramount importance, leading to the necessity in development of different types of analytical methods to analyse the trace amounts of PFAS with varying selectivity and sensitivity. Analytical methods that have been advanced and employed for PFAS identification are critically described with their strengths, limitations and future potentials in this review. This review includes, (i) instrument analytical methodologies, mainly focusing on sample preparation, extraction and recovery analysis, (ii) nanoparticle-based sensors, and an app-based smartphone portable sensor, for the monitoring and sensing of PFAS in different environmental matrices. Furthermore, (iii) total oxidisable precursor assay (TOPA), content of total organic fluorine (TOF) as well as total fluorine (TF) are also reviewed, which provide fundamental tools towards achieving precursor quantification and closing mass balance analysis. Removing emerging perfluoroalkyl ether acids and fluorotelomer sulfonates from water by nanofiltration membranes: Insights into performance and underlying mechanisms

Abstract:Although nanofiltration (NF) has been widely reported for removing long-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water, little is known about the correlations between removal efficacy and PFAS/membrane characteristics, especially for emerging PFAS with shorter polyfluoroalkyl chain or containing fluoroether moieties. A systematic study of treatment of structurally diverse PFAS by NF can help predict the behavior of more unknown compounds during NF process. In this study, we conducted filtration experiments with five commercial NF membranes. Results show that seven legacy PFAS, three emerging perfluoroalkyl ether acids (PFEA) and two fluorotelomer sulfonates (FTS) can be removed simultaneously during the NF process, with rejection ranging from 66.0% to > 99.9%. The removal efficiency of five membranes decreased successively as DK > NF90 > XN45 > NF270 > DL. Rejection of FTS and PFEA by DK membranes were 88.3% to 97.1% and 81.7% to > 99.9%, respectively. Correlation analysis revealed that PFAS molecular structure and membrane characteristics significantly affect PFAS rejection. PFAS molecular weight (MW) and hydrophobicity (logKow) and membrane intrinsic structural characteristics (e.g., molecular weight cut-off (MWCO), water permeability, and salt selectivity) are among the most significant parameters impacting PFAS removal. The findings imply that both steric hindrance and hydrophobic interactions contribute to PFAS rejection. Moreover, the mass of PFAS adsorbed on the membrane was positively correlated with their molecular parameters (i.e., MW and logKow) and weakly correlated with membrane properties, suggesting that the adsorption and rejection of PFAS have similar driving forces. This study provides critical insights into the application of NF for emerging PFAS removal for both the scientific community and private industry, concerning water purification processes and remediation of thousands of PFAS-impacted sites.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), dubbed "forever chemicals", are synthetic compounds containing strong carbon–fluorine bonds. They are widely used in various industrial processes and products, and as a result, PFAS pollution is pervasive and has led to persistent contamination of surface and groundwater sources. Due to the adverse impact of PFAS exposure on health, there have been growing concerns among the public, the scientific community, and regulatory bodies, and treating water to an adequate level is essential. Nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) are two of the candidate technologies for separating PFAS from water. NF and RO systems are easy to operate and require little use of chemicals. In contrast, other water treatment technologies ( e.g. , chemical oxidation, adsorption, ion exchange, and photocatalytic degradation) are often unsatisfactory due to slow reaction kinetics, generation and release of harmful by-products, or high operating costs. Despite the advantages of NF and RO, a concentrated residual stream is produced which contains high levels of PFAS. This concentrate, which typically accounts for 10 to 20% of the feedwater volume and is 5 to 10 times more concentrated with PFAS, must be managed or further treated appropriately to prevent environmental contamination. In this review, the NF/RO systems for the treatment of PFAS-contaminated water are discussed, focusing on the factors that affect their effectiveness and the mechanisms by which they remove PFAS. Also, advances in NF/RO membranes and systems as well as technical challenges at present are discussed along with an introduction to a total management plan for concentrated residual streams using a novel combination of NF/RO processes coupled with other state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Determining the reliability of nanofiltration (NF) membranes for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern, including polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), pharmaceuticals, and personal care products (PPCPs), is important for ensuring drinking water safety. This study aimed to clarify the factors that influence the removal of nine major PFASs during submerged NF treatment via extrapolation based on the factors that influence PPCP removal. The rejection of nine PFASs in ultra-filtered dam water by a polypiperazine-amide (NF270) membrane increased from 71 % to 94 % at a low permeate flux of 5 L/m2 h as the PFAS molecular dimensions increased. PFASs with a carboxylic acid (-CO2H) were rejected to a greater extent than PFASs with a sulfo group (-SO3H). Further, negatively charged PFASs or PPCPs were rejected to a greater extent than uncharged and positively charged PPCPs. Our findings suggest that the rejection of PFASs can vary because of the (i) clearance distance between the PFASs' molecular dimensions and NF membrane pore diameter and (ii) intensity of electrostatic repulsion between the PFASs' functional groups and NF membrane surface. Our study indicates that submerged NF can achieve high PFAS rejection; however, variations in rejection among PFASs can become more prominent owing to a low permeate flux.
Efficient Removal of Perfluorooctane Sulphonate by Nanofiltration: Insights into the Effect and Mechanism of Coexisting Inorganic Ions and Humic Acid

Abstract:The removal of perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS) with coexisting substances is very important. Inorganic ions and humic acid (HA) commonly coexist and may influence PFOS removal performance. However, there is little information on the capacity for systematic PFOS removal in the presence of inorganic ions and HA during nanofiltration (NF) process. In this paper, the impact of the coexistence of anions, cations, and HA on PFOS removal were investigated by NF. More specifically, the effect and interaction of anions, cations, and HA on PFOS removal performance and mechanism were examined. The PFOS removal rejection increased from 92% to 99% when HA was present together with both cations and anions. The higher the valence of the inorganic ion was, the greater the PFOS rejection was. The sieving effect was dominant in the improvement of PFOS removal by the presence of cations. The electrostatic repulsion played an important role in the improvement of PFOS removal by the presence of anions. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) was applied to calculate the interaction between PFOS molecules, cations, and HA. Corresponding DFT structures and thermodynamics parameters were obtained. It showed that the Ca2+ ions could more easily bridge two PFOS than one PFOS, HA could more easily coordinate with both Ca2+ and PFOS molecules. The increase of PFOS size after the coordination reaction results in the improvement of the sieving effect. Additionally, other analyses including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and the surface zeta potential also demonstrated the sieving effect mainly governed PFOS removal in coexistence with HA and cations. The electrostatic repulsion was dominant in PFOS separation performance in coexistence with HA and anions.
Rejection of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in aqueous film-forming foam by high-pressure membranes

Abstract:The ubiquitous use and manufacturing of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have led to the contamination of water resources worldwide. High-pressure membranes, including nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO), are increasingly being deployed for water treatment and may be an effective barrier to PFASs. However, the impact of membrane operating conditions, background water matrix, and solute adsorption on rejection of diverse PFASs by NF and RO remains unclear. Rejection of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) present in aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) diluted into a laboratory electrolyte matrix by NF and RO spiral wound elements was >98% and >99%, respectively. Rejection of the same PFAAs present in an AFFF-impacted groundwater matrix by NF was lower, between 92-98%, and was attributed to background water matrix constituents. Operating conditions did not have a significant impact on rejection of PFASs with the exception of shorter chain perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs) in the AFFF-impacted groundwater matrix, where rejection increased with increasing flux. Structure-activity analysis of 42 PFASs, including 10 PFAAs and 32 PFASs identified in AFFF through high-resolution mass spectrometry suspect screening methods, showed some correlation between rejection and compound molecular weight. Adsorptive losses of PFAAs, most notably longer-chain hydrophobic PFAAs, to the spiral wound membrane elements and the membrane system were observed. Adsorption of PFAAs to the permeate spacer was especially pronounced and may have implications of artificially high rejection values. Still, rejection of PFASs by NF remained consistently >98% over 13 days of continuous operation.

Abstract:Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), especially perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), have garnered broad attention due to their near ubiquitous presence in environmental and biological matrices, recalcitrant nature, and reported negative human health impacts. Processes using high-pressure membranes such as reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) have been investigated as PFAA treatment technologies due to their ability to separate dissolved solutes such as inorganic ions, and small molecular weight organic compounds. The major drawback associated with high-pressure membranes is management of the concentrate stream produced during treatment. As a result, high recovery membrane system configurations have been developed with the goal of minimizing volume of concentrate requiring disposal. In the context of PFAS treatment, high-recovery membrane applications may be beneficial; PFAS residuals could be concentrated allowing advantages in terms of disposal, e.g., more effective application of PFAS destruction technologies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the PFAA rejection performance of commercially available high-pressure membranes in a pilot-scale closed-circuit membrane filtration (CCMF) system. The rejection of nine PFAAs by four spiral wound membrane products spanning characteristics ranging from loose NF to seawater RO was investigated during and through two closed-circuit sequences each operating up to 97% recovery. Mechanisms of PFAA rejection including steric and electrostatic exclusion were investigated through analysis of generated data, and ionic strength experiments. Additionally, short-term foulant accumulation during CCMF and normalized energy analysis were performed by monitoring the calculated temperature corrected specific flux (TCSF) and design software simulations, respectively. Results from this study demonstrate that tight NF and RO membranes are effective for separating and concentrating PFAAs during high recovery CCMF operation. During CCMF sequences to 97% water recovery, the NF90, CR100, and SW30 membranes evaluated exhibited overall rejection values of > 98.3% for the PFAAs quantified in this study. The loose NF membrane element investigated (NF270) exhibited the lowest PFAA rejection performance during the high recovery experiments, particularly at water recoveries > 90%. Diminished PFAA rejection performance of the NF270 is likely a result of both steric and electrostatic exclusion being significant separation mechanisms. Feed water amended with sodium sulfate yielded lower rejection for PFAAs by the NF270 compared to unamended feed water supporting the hypothesis that that high recovery CCMF operation may negatively impact PFAS rejection by loose NF membranes, particularly membranes that rely on electrostatic exclusion for separation of anions.

Abstract:This study investigates the removal efficiency of anionic, cationic, and zwitterionic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by nanofiltration (NF) in the presence of three representative natural organic matter (NOM) types: bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA), and sodium alginate (SA). In particular, effects of PFAS molecular structure and coexisting NOM on the transmission and adsorption efficiency of PFAS during NF treatment were analyzed. The results indicate that NOM types dominate membrane fouling behavior despite the coexistence of PFAS. SA exhibits the most significant fouling propensity, resulting in maximum water flux decline. NF effectively removed both ether and precursor PFAS. The effects of the three typical NOM on the membrane-passing behavior of PFAS were consistent for all PFAS investigated. Generally, PFAS transmission decreased in the order of SA-fouled > pristine > HA-fouled > BSA-fouled, indicating that the presence of HA and BSA enhanced PFAS removal while SA declined. Furthermore, reduced PFAS transmission was observed with increased perfluorocarbon chain length or molecular weight (MW), regardless of the presence or type of the NOM. The impacts of NOM on PFAS filtration diminished when the PFAS van der Waals radius was >4.0 Å, MW > 500 Da, polarization > 20 Å, or LogKow > 3. These findings suggest that both steric repulsion and hydrophobic interactions, especially the former, play important roles in PFAS rejection by NF. This study provides insights into the specific applicability and performance of membrane-based processes for eliminating PFAS during drinking and wastewater treatments, and highlighting the importance of coexisting NOM.

Study on the Effects of Cations and Anions on the Removal of Perfluorooctane Sulphonate by Nanofiltration Membrane

Abstract:Previously, the nanofiltration (NF) membrane has been applied to remove perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS), a persistent pollutant from drinking water by our group. However, the effects of co-existence ions on the PFOS removal have not been systematically studied. For instance, cations such as Ca2+ and Fe3+ are found to coordinate with -SO3 groups of PFOS molecule and subsequently influence the rejection properties of NF membrane. In this study, a commercial NF membrane (ESNAl-K1) was utilized to separate PFOS compounds in the existence of three cations including Na+, Ca2+ and Fe3+, as well as three anions including Cl-, SO42- and PO43-. The PFOS rejection increased from 92.65% to 94.74%, 97.14%, and 97.94%, respectively, with 2 mM Na+, Ca2+ and Fe3+, respectively. As the concentrations of anions including SO42- and PO43- increased to 2 mM, the PFOS rejection increased to 94.74% and 97.60%, respectively. The density functional theory (DFT) was applied to analyze the interaction between three different cations with PFOS molecule. It indicated that one Na+ ion could only bind with one PFOS molecule, but every Ca2+ or Fe3+ ion preferred to coordinate with two PFOS molecules. Based on the analysis results of the NF membranes while using the atomic force microscopy (AFM), surface zeta potential (electro-osmosis) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the major separation mechanisms of PFOS in the existence of other cations and anions were the sieving effect, and the electrostatic repulsion, respectively.

Abstract:Perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) is a kind of anthropogenic recalcitrant contaminant that has posed a threat to drinking water safety and brought widespread public health concerns. Nanofiltration (NF) is an effective way to remove PFBS from drinking water, while the removal is influenced by coexisting ions. To investigate the effects and intrinsic mechanisms of coexisting ions on the rejection of PFBS, poly(piperazineamide) NF membrane was utilized in this work. Results showed that most cations and anions in the feedwater could effectively improve PFBS rejection and simultaneously reduce NF membrane permeability. In most cases, the decrease in NF membrane permeability corresponded to an increase in the valence of cations or anions. When cations (Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ ) were present, the rejection of PFBS was effectively improved from 79% to more than 91.07%. Under these conditions, electrostatic exclusion was the dominant NF rejection mechanism. This was also the leading mechanism for 0.1 mmol/L Fe 3+ coexisted condition. As the concentration of Fe 3+ increased to 0.5–1 mmol/L, intensified hydrolyzation would accelerate the formation of the cake layers. The differences in the cake layer characteristics led to the different rejection trends of PFBS. For anions (SO 4 2− and PO 4 3− ), both sieving effects and electrostatic exclusion were enhanced. As anionic concentration raised, the NF rejection of PFBS increased to above 90.15%. By contrast, the effect of Cl − on PFBS rejection was also affected by coexisting cations in the solution. The dominant NF rejection mechanism was electrostatic exclusion. Accordingly, it is suggested that the usage of negatively charged NF membranes could facilitate the efficient separation of PFBS under ionic coexisting conditions, thereby ensuring the safety of drinking water.

Abstract:Worldwide widely distributed perfluorooctanoic acid generally coexists with Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ and natural organics in natural water bodies. However, there is no systematic study reported on the retention behavior of perfluorooctanoic acid in the presence of Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ and typical dissolved organics during nanofiltration. Herein, the influences of Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ and/or humic acid/sodium alginate on perfluorooctanoic acid removal by nanofiltration were investigated, respectively. The dominant rejection mechanism of perfluorooctanoic acid was further revealed by combining the surface morphology and charge characteristics of the virgin and fouled membranes. Result showed that, under 0.6 MPa, perfluorooctanoic acid rejection obviously increased when the concentration of Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ increased from 0 to 2 mM in feedwater. This improvement was attributed to the complexing and bridging of Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ with perfluorooctanoic acid which could increase the size exclusion effect. When humic acid/sodium alginate coexisted with perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctanoic acid rejection increased distinctly because the adsorption of humic acid/sodium alginate on nanofiltration membrane surface enhanced the sieving and electrostatic repulsion effects of nanofiltration membrane to perfluorooctanoic acid. Additionally, when Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ and humic acid/sodium alginate coexisted with perfluorooctanoic acid in feedwater, perfluorooctanoic acid rejection was the highest in all feed conditions because Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ could neutralizing charge, compressing double electric layer, and complexating and bridging with humic acid/sodium alginate as well as nanofiltration membrane. At this time, the foulant cake layer acted as an extra rejection layer, and sieving effect was the main rejection mechanism of perfluorooctanoic acid by nanofiltration membrane.

Abstract:As a group of hazardous and bioaccumulative molecules, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) threaten the health of ecosystems and humans. A growing body of research suggests that nanoengineered membranes can effectively remove PFAS from water media over conventional technologies. However, there has been a lack of discussion on the different types of membrane materials and the mechanisms involved in PFAS removal. This review thus seeks to fill the knowledge gap by critically assessing different membrane materials, particularly nanocomposites and electrospun nanofiber. Besides discussing the mechanisms underlying PFAS removal, this work also reviewed environmental and operational factors that can impact the efficiency of PFAS removal from water. In addition, future research directions were provided upon analyzing the challenges and opportunities in this membrane field.

Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonates (PFOS) as a persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic pollutant has been detected in surface water around the world and attracted great attention in recent years. It’s important and urgent to develop effective technology to remove PFOS. The effect of coagulation pretreatment on the removal efficiency of PFOS by nanofiltration (NF) was investigated. Two types of NF membranes were used to test the PFOS rejections in three different solutions including DI water, humic acid (HA) solution and coagulation solution. The characterizations such as HA and PFOS accumulation on the membranes, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and surface ζ potential analysis of virgin and fouled membranes were conducted to study the separation mechanism. The experimental results showed that PFOS can be partly removed by coagulation. The NF270 membrane exhibited a higher PFOS rejection (>95%) than the HYDRACORE membrane (40–60%) in single NF process. The surface negative charge density of both NF membranes reached a minimum value after filtering coagulation effluent, which might be a result of floc adsorption on the membrane surface. Coagulation pretreatment was effective to enhance the PFOS rejection of the NF membranes. In particular, the rejection efficiency of the HYDRACORE membrane increased from 55% to 86% at a trans-membrane pressure of 0.4MPa. The SEM images showed that the fouling layer formed by flocs was loose and highly permeable.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are commonly used in many consumer and industrial products. However, their resulting widespread release into aqueous environments and their potential toxicities to organisms have raised significant environmental concern. Among the various approaches to the removal of PFAS contaminants, adsorption has proven to be highly effective, especially when carbonaceous nanomaterials (CNMs) are used as the adsorbent. Nonetheless, the interfacial adsorption of PFASs on CNMs is affected by many factors. In this work, the adsorption behaviors of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), two highly representative PFASs, on different CNMs are reviewed. We also examine the mechanisms of PFOA and PFOS adsorption on CNMs, including electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, ligand exchange and hydrogen bonding. Due to the significant influence of hydrophobic interactions on adsorption, CNMs rich in oxygen-containing functional groups will result in weaker PFAS adsorption than achieved using pristine materials. The important contribution of nanobubbles to hydrophobic interactions is considered herein. Overall, this work contributes to a better understanding of the adsorption affinity of PFASs on CNMs in water environments. Moreover, it provides the systematic theoretical support that is needed for the more effective use of CNMs in the removal of PFASs from aqueous systems.
