Abstract:Quantum materials have attracted much attention in recent years due to their exotic and incredible properties. Among them, van der Waals materials stand out due to their weak interlayer coupling, providing easy access to manipulating electrical and optical properties. Many fascinating electrical, optical, and magnetic properties have been reported in the moiré superlattices, such as unconventional superconductivity, photonic dispersion engineering, and ferromagnetism. In this review, we summarize the methods to prepare moiré superlattices in the van der Waals materials and focus on the current discoveries of moiré pattern-modified electrical properties, recent findings of atomic reconstruction, as well as some possible future directions in this field.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Moiré materials, as a type of superlattice material with unique structures and properties, have attracted extensive attention and research in recent years. They are formed by the overlap of two or more two-dimensional (2D) lattices with small rotational or lattice constant differences, creating new periodic structures. Moiré superlattices can induce mismatch of momentum space, resulting in new Brillouin zones, which in turn affect properties of Moiré superlattices. This review comprehensively discusses the emerging properties and features of Moiré materials, including important advancements in optics, electronics and thermal dynamics. We explored the synthesis methods of Moiré materials, structural modulation, and their impacts on properties and functionalities, and their potential applications in nanoscience and technology also been discussed. Furthermore, this paper introduced significant progress of Moiré materials in areas such as 2D materials, topological physics, and quantum effects, along with their potential applications in optoelectronic devices and other fields.

Abstract:Moiré superlattices, arising from the periodic Moiré patterns formed by two-dimensional (2D) materials stacked with a slight lattice mismatch, have attracted significant attention due to their unique electronic and optical performances. This review provides an overview of recent advances in Moiré superlattices, highlighting their formation mechanisms, structural characteristics, and emergent phenomena. First, we discuss the theoretical basis and experimental techniques employed in fabricating Moiré superlattices. Then we outline various characterization methods that enable the investigation of the structural and electronic performance of Moiré superlattices at the atomic scale. Afterward, we review the diverse range of emergent phenomena exhibited in Moiré superlattices. These phenomena include the appearance of electronic band engineering, unconventional superconductivity, and topologically nontrivial state. We explore how these phenomena arise from the interplay between the original electronic properties of the constituent materials and the Moiré pattern-induced modifications. Furthermore, we examine the potential applications of Moiré superlattices in fields such as electronics, optoelectronics, and quantum technologies. Finally, we summarize the challenges and directions in Moiré superlattice research, which include exploring more complex Moiré patterns, understanding the role of twist angle and strain engineering, and developing theoretical frameworks to describe the behaviors of Moiré systems. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the recent progress in Moiré superlattices, shedding light on their formation, performance, and potential applications. The insights gained from this research are expected to pave the way for the design and development of next-generation functional Moiré superlattices.

Abstract:Moiré superlattices are formed when overlaying two materials with a slight mismatch in twist angle or lattice constant. They provide a novel platform for the study of strong electronic correlations and non-trivial band topology, where emergent phenomena such as correlated insulating states, unconventional superconductivity, and quantum anomalous Hall effect are discovered. In this review, we focus on the semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) based moiré systems that host intriguing flat-band physics. We first review the exfoliation methods of two-dimensional materials and the fabrication technique of their moiré structures. Secondly, we overview the progress of the optically excited moiré excitons, which render the main discovery in the early experiments on TMD moiré systems. We then introduce the formation mechanism of flat bands and their potential in the quantum simulation of the Hubbard model with tunable doping, degeneracies, and correlation strength. Finally, we briefly discuss the challenges and future perspectives of this field.

Abstract:Nanoscale exotic polar topological structures, such as vortices and skyrmions, hold promise for next-generation electronic devices, yet their spontaneous formation in 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials remains quite challenging. Herein, we demonstrate from first-principles that ultrahigh-density polar vortices emerge in the square moiré bilayer formed by twisting two layers of centrosymmetric PbS with the D4h point group. The emerged ferroelectricity arises from the inherent complex strain associated with the twisted structures, and the resulting electron polarization is much greater than that obtained in sliding ferroelectricity. Notably, the engineered strain patterns are characterized by peculiar inhomogeneous in-plane fields with a checkerboard distribution of uniaxial tension. This nanoscale nonuniform strain produces an ultrahigh-density vortex polarization lattice. The results from our study not only reveals a new mechanism for electric polarization and polar topologies in moiré bilayers but also provides opportunities for designing 2D ultrahigh-density electric devices.

Abstract:Nonlinear physics is one of the most important research fields in modern physics and materials science. It offers an unprecedented paradigm for exploring many fascinating physical phenomena and realizing diverse cutting-edge applications inconceivable in the framework of linear processes. Here we review the recent theoretical and experimental progress concerning the nonlinear physics of synthetic quantum moiré superlattices. We focus on the emerging nonlinear electronic, optical and optoelectronic properties of moiré superlattices, including but not limited to the nonlinear anomalous Hall effect, dynamically twistable harmonic generation, nonlinear optical chirality, ultralow-power-threshold optical solitons and spontaneous photogalvanic effect. We also present our perspectives on the future opportunities and challenges in this rapidly progressing field, and highlight the implications for advances in both fundamental physics and technological innovations.

Abstract:Contemporary quantum materials research is guided by themes of topology and electronic correlations. A confluence of these two themes is engineered in moiré materials, an emerging class of highly tunable, strongly correlated 2D materials designed by the rotational or lattice misalignment of atomically thin crystals. In moiré materials, dominant Coulomb interactions among electrons give rise to collective electronic phases, often with robust topological properties. Identifying the mechanisms responsible for these exotic phases is fundamental to our understanding of strongly interacting quantum systems and to our ability to engineer new material properties for potential future technological applications. In this Review, we highlight the contributions of local spectroscopic, thermodynamic and electromagnetic probes to the budding field of moiré materials research. These techniques have not only identified many of the underlying mechanisms of the correlated insulators, generalized Wigner crystals, unconventional superconductors, moiré ferroelectrics and topological orbital ferromagnets found in moiré materials, but have also uncovered fragile quantum phases that have evaded spatially averaged global probes. Furthermore, we highlight recently developed local probe techniques, including local charge sensing and quantum interference probes, that have uncovered new physical observables in moiré materials.

Kekulé Moiré Superlattices

Abstract:Moiré superlattices from stacks of van der Waals materials offer an exciting arena in the fields of condensed matter physics and materials science. Typically, these moiré superlattices consist of materials with identical or similar structures, and the long moiré period arises from a small twist angle or lattice mismatch. In this article, we discuss that long moiré period appears in a new moiré system by stacking two dissimilar van der Waals layers with large lattice mismatch, resulting in couplings between moiré bands from remote valleys in the momentum space. In this system, the first layer is reconstructed using a $\sqrt{3}$ by $\sqrt{3}$ supercell that resembles the Kekulé distortion in graphene, and such reconstruction becomes nearly commensurate with the second layer. This Kekulé moiré superlattice is realized in heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides and metal phosphorus trichalcogenides such as MoTe$_2$/MnPSe$_3$. By first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic MnPSe$_3$ strongly couples the otherwise degenerate Kramers' valleys of MoTe$_2$, resulting in valley pseudospin textures that depend on Néel vector direction, stacking geometry, and external fields. With one hole per moiré supercell, we predict that the system can become a Chern insulator, of which the topology is tunable by external fields.

Abstract:Moiré superlattices in van der Waals heterostructures have given rise to a number of emergent electronic phenomena due to the interplay between atomic structure and electron correlations. Indeed, electrons in these structures have been recently found to exhibit a number of emergent properties that the individual layers themselves do not exhibit. This includes superconductivity 1 , 2 , magnetism 3 , topological edge states 4 , 5 , exciton trapping 6 and correlated insulator phases 7 . However, the lack of a straightforward technique to characterize the local structure of moiré superlattices has thus far impeded progress in the field. In this work we describe a simple, room-temperature, ambient method to visualize real-space moiré superlattices with sub-5-nm spatial resolution in a variety of twisted van der Waals heterostructures including, but not limited to, conducting graphene, insulating boron nitride and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides. Our method uses piezoresponse force microscopy, an atomic force microscope modality that locally measures electromechanical surface deformation. We find that all moiré superlattices, regardless of whether the constituent layers have inversion symmetry, exhibit a mechanical response to out-of-plane electric fields. This response is closely tied to flexoelectricity wherein electric polarization and electromechanical response is induced through strain gradients present within moiré superlattices. Therefore, moiré superlattices of two-dimensional materials manifest themselves as an interlinked network of polarized domain walls in a non-polar background matrix.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed the occurrence of novel 2D moiré patterns in nanoflatland materials. These visually beautiful moiré superlattices have become a playground on which exotic quantum phenomena can be observed. The state‐of‐the‐art experimental techniques that have been developed for crafting moiré superlattices of flatland materials are reviewed. Graphene and its heterostructure with boron nitride have now sparked new interlayer twists as a new degree of freedom for tuning several angle‐dependent physical properties, e.g., the appearance of van Hove singularities, tunable Mott insulator states, and the Hofstadter butterfly pattern. Moreover, the interplay of correlated insulating states and superconductivity is recently observed for a so‐called magic‐angle twisted bilayer graphene. Furthermore, beyond graphene, other 2D materials, such as silicene, phosphorene, and the recent black phosphorus /MoS2 heterojunctions, which are 2D allotropes of bismuth and antimony grown on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite and MoS2, are considered. Finally, the optically important exciton phenomenon, which depends on the moiré potential and has been observed for a moiré superlattice of transition metal dichalcogenides, is discussed. This overview aims to cover all the fascinating prospects that depend on the moiré superlattice, ranging from electronic structure to optical exotics among flatland materials.

Collective optical properties of moiré excitons

Abstract:We propose that excitons in moiré transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers offer a promising platform for investigating collective radiative properties. While some of these optical properties resemble those of cold atom arrays, moiré excitons extend to the deep subwavelength limit, beyond the reach of current optical lattice experiments. Remarkably, we show that the collective optical properties can be exploited to probe certain correlated electron states. Specifically, we illustrate that the Wigner crystal states of electrons doped into these bilayers act as an emergent periodic potential for excitons. Moreover, the collective dissipative excitonic bands and their associated Berry curvature can reveal various charge orders that emerge at the corresponding electronic doping. Our study provides a promising pathway for future research on the interplay between collective effects and strong correlations involving moiré excitons.

Abstract:Moiré materials have emerged as a platform for exploring the physics of strong electronic correlations and non-trivial band topology. Here we review the recent progress in semiconductor moiré materials, with a particular focus on transition metal dichalcogenides. Following a brief overview of the general features in this class of materials, we discuss recent theoretical and experimental studies on Hubbard physics, Kane–Mele–Hubbard physics and equilibrium moiré excitons. We also comment on the future opportunities and challenges in the studies of transition metal dichalcogenide and other semiconductor moiré materials.

Abstract:Moiré materials are artificial crystals formed at van der Waals heterojunctions that have emerged as a highly tunable platform to realize much of the rich quantum physics of electrons in atomic scale solids, also providing opportunities to discover new quantum phases of matter. Here we use finite-size exact diagonalization methods to explore the physics of single-band itinerant electron ferromagnetism in semiconductor moiré materials. We predict where ferromagnetism is likely to occur in triangular-lattice moiré systems, and where it is likely to yield the highest Curie temperatures.

Abstract:Twisted bilayers of van der Waals materials have recently attracted great attention due to their tunable, strongly correlated phenomena. Here, we investigate the chirality-specific physics in three-dimensional moiré superlattices induced by Eshelby twist. Our direct density functional theory calculations reveal helical rotation leads to optical circular dichroism and chirality-specific nonlinear Hall effect, even though there is no magnetization or magnetic field. Both these phenomena can be reversed by changing the structural chirality. This provides a path to constructing chirality-specific materials.

Abstract:Moiré superlattices have emerged as a new platform for studying strongly correlated quantum phenomena, but these systems have been largely limited to van der Waals layer two-dimensional materials. Here we introduce moiré superlattices leveraging ultrathin, ligand-free halide perovskites, facilitated by ionic interactions. Square moiré superlattices with varying periodic lengths are clearly visualized through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Twist-angle-dependent transient photoluminescence microscopy and electrical characterizations indicate the emergence of localized bright excitons and trapped charge carriers near a twist angle of ~10°. The localized excitons are accompanied by enhanced exciton emission, attributed to an increased oscillator strength by a theoretically predicted flat band. This research showcases the promise of two-dimensional perovskites as unique room-temperature moiré materials.

Abstract:Moiré superlattices, the artificial quantum materials, have provided a wide range of possibilities for the exploration of completely new physics and device architectures. In this Review, we focus on the recent progress on emerging moiré photonics and optoelectronics, including but not limited to moiré excitons, trions, and polaritons; resonantly hybridized excitons; reconstructed collective excitations; strong mid- and far-infrared photoresponses; terahertz single-photon detection; and symmetry-breaking optoelectronics. We also discuss the future opportunities and research directions in this field, such as developing advanced techniques to probe the emergent photonics and optoelectronics in an individual moiré supercell; exploring new ferroelectric, magnetic, and multiferroic moiré systems; and using external degrees of freedom to engineer moiré properties for exciting physics and potential technological innovations.

Abstract:The moiré lattice has recently attracted broad interest in both solid-state physics and photonics where exotic phenomena in manipulating the quantum states are explored. In this work, we study the one-dimensional (1D) analogs of "moiré" lattices in a synthetic frequency dimension constructed by coupling two resonantly modulated ring resonators with different lengths. Unique features associated with the flatband manipulation as well as the flexible control of localization position inside each unit cell in the frequency dimension have been found, which can be controlled via the choice of flatband. Our work therefore provides insight into simulating moiré physics in 1D synthetic frequency space, which holds important promise for potential applications toward optical information processing.
