Abstract:Given two complex Hilbert spaces $H$ and $K$, let $S(B(H))$ and $S(B(K))$ denote the unit spheres of the C$^*$-algebras $B(H)$ and $B(K)$ of all bounded linear operators on $H$ and $K$, respectively. We prove that every surjective isometry $f: S(B(K)) \to S(B(H))$ admits an extension to a surjective complex linear or conjugate linear isometry $T: B(K)\to B(H)$. This provides a positive answer to Tingley's problem in the setting of $B(H)$ spaces.

Abstract:It is known that an automorphism of $F_g$, the oriented closed surface of genus $g$, is extendable over the 4-sphere $S^4$ if and only if it has a bounding invariant spin structure \cite{WsWz}. We show that each automorphism of $F_g$ has an invariant spin structure, and obtain a stably extendable result: Each automorphism of $F_g$ is extendable over $S^4$ after a connected sum with the identity map on the torus. Then each automorphism of an oriented once punctured surface is extendable over $S^4$. For each $g\neq 4$, we construct a periodic map on $F_g$ that is not extendable over $S^4$, and we prove that every periodic map on $F_4$ is extendable over $S^4$, which answer a question in \cite{WsWz}. We illustrate for an automorphism $f$ of $F_g$, how to find its invariant spin structures, bounding or not; and once $f$ has a bounding invariant spin structure, how to construct an embedding $F_g\hookrightarrow S^4$ so that $f$ is extendable with respect to this embedding.

Abstract:For a locally compact Hausdorff space $L$, we denote by $C_0(L,\mathbb{R})$ the Banach space of all continuous real-valued functions on $L$ vanishing at infinity equipped with the supremum norm. We prove that every surjective phase-isometry $T\colon C_0^+(X,\mathbb{R}) \to C_0^+(Y,\mathbb{R})$ between the positive cones of $C_0(X,\mathbb{R})$ and $C_0(Y,\mathbb{R})$ is a composition operator induced by a homeomorphism between $X$ and $Y$. Furthermore, we show that any surjective phase-isometry $T\colon C_0^+(X,\mathbb{R}) \to C_0^+(Y,\mathbb{R})$ extends to a surjective linear isometry from $C_0(X,\mathbb{R})$ onto $C_0(Y,\mathbb{R})$.

Abstract:We extend the existing results on surjective isometries of unit spheres in the Tsirelson space $T\left[\frac{1}{2}, S_1\right]$ to the class $T[\theta,S_{\alpha}]$ for any integer $\theta^{-1} \geq 2$ and $1 \leqslant \alpha < \omega_1$, where $S_{\alpha}$ denotes the Schreier family of order $\alpha$. This positively answers Tingley's problem for these spaces, which asks whether every surjective isometry between unit spheres can be extended to a surjective linear isometry of the entire space. Furthermore, we improve the result stating that every linear isometry on $T[\theta, S_1]$ ($\theta \in \left(0, \frac{1}{2}\right]$) is determined by a permutation of the first $\lceil \theta^{-1} \rceil$ elements of the canonical unit basis, followed by a possible sign change of the corresponding coordinates and a sign change of the remaining coordinates. Specifically, we prove that only the first $\lfloor \theta^{-1} \rfloor$ elements can be permuted. This finding enables us to establish a sufficient condition for being a linear isometry in these spaces.

Abstract:Let $f: S(E) \to S(B)$ be a surjective isometry between the unit spheres of two weakly compact JB$^*$-triples not containing direct summands of rank smaller than or equal to 3. Suppose $E$ has rank greater than or equal to 5. Applying techniques developed in JB$^*$-triple theory, we prove that $f$ admits an extension to a surjective real linear isometry $T: E\to B$. Among the consequences, we show that every surjective isometry between the unit spheres of two compact C$^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$ (and in particular when $A=K(H)$ and $B=K(H')$) extends to a surjective real linear isometry from $A$ into $B$. These results provide new examples of infinite dimensional Banach spaces where Tingley's problem admits a positive answer.

Abstract:In this paper we give a complete description of surjective linear isometries between Banach spaces of absolutely continuous functions on arbitrary (not necessarily compact) subsets of the real line with respect to the sum-norm. We also use this description to study approximate local isometries and approximate 2-local isometries on these spaces. In particular, we present generalizations of all known results concerning such isometries, and obtain the reflexivity and 2-reflexivity of the isometry group of absolutely continuous function spaces in a noncompact framework.

Abstract:Let $F_g$ be the closed orientable surface of genus $g$. We address the problem to extend torsion elements of the mapping class group ${\mathcal{M}}(F_g)$ over the 4-sphere $S^4$. Let $w_g$ be a torsion element of maximum order in ${\mathcal{M}}(F_g)$. Results including: (1) For each $g$, $w_g$ is periodically extendable over $S^4$ for some non-smooth embedding $e: F_g\to S^4$, and not periodically extendable over $S^4$ for any smooth embedding $e: F_g\to S^4$. (2) For each $g$, $w_g$ is extendable over $S^4$ for some smooth embedding $e: F_g\to S^4$ if and only if $g=4k, 4k+3$. (3) Each torsion element of order $p$ in ${\mathcal{M}}(F_g)$ is extendable over $S^4$ for some smooth embedding $e: F_g\to S^4$ if either (i) $p=3^m$ and $g$ is even; or (ii) $p=5^m$ and $g\ne 4k+2$; or (iii) $p=7^m$. Abstract:We show that every cross ratio preserving homeomorphism between boundaries of Hadamard manifolds extends to a map, called circumcenter extension, provided that the manifolds satisfy certain visibility conditions. We describe regions on which this map is Hölder-continuous. Furthermore, we show that this map is a rough isometry, whenever the manifolds admit cocompact group actions by isometries and we improve previously known quasi-isometry constants, provided by Biswas, in the case of 2-dimensional manifolds. Finally, we provide a sufficient condition for this map to be an isometry in the case of Hadamard surfaces.

Abstract:We study an extension problem for continuous linear maps in the setting of (LB)-spaces. More precisely, we characterize the pairs (E, Z), where E is a locally complete space with a fundamental sequence of bounded sets and Z is an (LB)-space, such that for every exact sequence of (LB)-spaces the map L(Y,E)→L(X,E),T↦T∘ι$$\begin{aligned} L(Y,E) \rightarrow L(X, E), ~ T \mapsto T \circ \iota \end{aligned}$$is surjective, meaning that each continuous linear map X→E$$X \rightarrow E$$ can be extended to a continuous linear map Y→E$$Y \rightarrow E$$ via ι$$\iota $$, under some mild conditions on E or Z (e.g. one of them is nuclear). We use our extension result to obtain sufficient conditions for the surjectivity of tensorized maps between Fréchet-Schwartz spaces. As an application of the latter, we study vector-valued Eidelheit type problems. Our work is inspired by and extends results of Vogt [24].

Abstract:We study monotone operators in reflexive Banach spaces that are invariant with respect to a group of suitable isometric isomorphisms and we show that they always admit a maximal extension which preserves the same invariance. A similar result applies to Lipschitz maps in Hilbert spaces, thus providing an invariant version of Kirzsbraun-Valentine extension Theorem. We then provide a relevant application to the case of monotone operators in $L^p$-spaces of random variables which are invariant with respect to measure-preserving isomorphisms, proving that they always admit maximal dissipative extensions which are still invariant by measure-preserving isomorphisms. We also show that such operators are law invariant, a much stronger property which is also inherited by their resolvents, the Moreau-Yosida approximations, and the associated semigroup of contractions. These results combine explicit representation formulae for the maximal extension of a monotone operator based on selfdual lagrangians and a refined study of measure-preserving maps in standard Borel spaces endowed with a nonatomic measure, with applications to the approximation of arbitrary couplings between measures by sequences of maps.

Abstract:In this paper, we study open complete metric spaces with non-negative curvature. Among other things, we establish an extension of Perelman's soul theorem for possibly singular spaces: "Let X be a complete, non-compact, finite dimensional Alexandrov space with non-negative curvature. Suppose that X has no boundary and has positive curvature on a non-empty open subset. Then X must be a contractible space". The proof of this result uses the detailed analysis of concavity of distance functions and Busemann functions on singular spaces with non-negative curvature. We will introduce a family of angular excess functions to measure convexity and extrinsic curvature of convex hypersurfaces in singular spaces. We also derive a new comparison for trapezoids in non-negatively curved spaces, which led to desired convexity estimates for the proof of our new soul theorem.

Abstract:Working in univalent foundations, we investigate the symmetries of spheres, i.e., the types of the form $\mathbb{S}^n = \mathbb{S}^n$. The case of the circle has a slick answer: the symmetries of the circle form two copies of the circle. For higher-dimensional spheres, the type of symmetries has again two connected components, namely the components of the maps of degree plus or minus one. Each of the two components has $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ as fundamental group. For the latter result, we develop an EHP long exact sequence.
