Abstract:The new isotope Pu-227 has been produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction Os-192(Ar-40, (5)n) Pu-227 at the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS, and identified using a well-established implantation-decay correlation technique. From the nine observed decay chains, the alpha-particle energy and half-life of Pu-227 were measured to be 8191(28) keV and 0.78(-0.19)(+0.39) s, respectively. The alpha decay, when analyzed using the reduced decay width, was tentatively assigned to be a hindered alpha transition with angular-momentum change of Delta L = 2.

Abstract:The isotopes Bh261,262 were reinvestigated by using the cold fusion reaction Cr54+Bi209 . The evaporation residues were separated by the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS2 (Spectrometer for Heavy Atoms and Nuclear Structure-2) and identified by means of the recoil- α -correlation method. The α -decay properties of Bh261,262 were measured and the results are consistent with the previously reported values. Based on the measured half-lives, the existence of two distinct states of Bh262 was confirmed, whereas Bh261 lacked any isomer with α -decay properties. Two spontaneous fission events potentially from Bh262 and/or Bh261 were detected and the production cross sections at beam energies of 264.1 and 270.4 MeV were obtained. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.034314 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The analysis of the data obtained in 2008 [1] for neutron deficient nuclei produced by fragmentation of a 124 Xe beam has progressed. Here we concentrate on the decay properties of 100 Sn, of which we identified about 250 ions. The time distribution of decay events after 100 Sn im-plantation in the same or neighbouring of the 1mm 3 pixels of the implantation detector yielded a preliminary value for the half-life of 1.16(0.20)s. This is much more precise than earlier values measured at GSI [2,3] or at MSU [4]. Fig. 1: E-spectrum of events following the implantation of identified 100 Sn nuclei. The E-decay of 100 Sn is supposed to populate essentially a single 1 + state in 100 In, that is formed by coupling the g 9/2 proton hole to a g 7/2 neutron particle. In order to determine the decay energy we had placed on either side of the implantation detector 10mm of Si detectors as calo-rimeter. For every decay event the energies deposited in the implantation and calorimeter detectors were summed up and yielded the spectrum shown in Fig. 1. Around 200 keV there is a line originating presumably from a sum of converted transitions after electron capture decay. From the centroid of the energy distribution in the range indicated by the blue bar we determined a preliminary value for the endpoint energy of 3.15(20)MeV. There are still small corrections necessary for energy losses in the dead layers, but the quality of this result is very much improved compared to our earlier estimate based on 7 decays [2,3]. With the preliminary values for half-life and decay energy we calculate a log(ft) value of 2.54(20) which is the smallest of all known E-decays and thus 100 Sn shows the largest transition strength. The Gamov-Teller strength B GT =11(4) shows a reduction by only a factor 1.6 compared to the value from the extreme single-particle model, where 10 protons contribute to the decay. With the 105 Ge-detectors of the RISING setup we measured with high efficiency for the first time the J-spectrum after E-decay of 100 Sn, which …

Abstract:A new heavy neutron-rich isotope Pa-239 has been produced in the interaction of 50-MeV/u O-18 ions with U-nat targets, Protactiniun products were separated radiochemically from the complex mixture of the reaction products, The results observed from the decay of Pa-239 and its daughter, U-239, show that the new heavy-rich isotope Pa-239 was synthesized and identified for the first time, The half-life of the Pa-239 was determined to be 106 +/- 30 min.

Abstract:A new proton-unbound isotope 204Ac was produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction Tm(40169Ca,5n)204Ac and identified via the recoil-α correlation at the gas-filled recoiled separators SHANS2 and SHANS. The excitation function for producing 204Ac was measured and the optimal beam energy was evaluated to be 212 MeV. Nineteen ER - α1 - α2 - α3 decay chains were observed for this isotope. Based on these chains, the α-particle energy and half-life of 204Ac were determined to be 7948(15) keV and 7.4−1.4+2.2 ms, respectively. Both are consistent with the theoretical prediction. The reduced α-decay width was deduced to be 49−15+10 keV, which indicates a favored α decay for 204Ac. In addition, more precise decay properties of Eα = 7883(15) keV and T1/2 = 7.7−1.6+2.7 ms were obtained for 205Ac.

Abstract:The new neutron-deficient isotope 215U was produced in the complete-fusion reaction 180W (40Ar, 5n) 215U. Evaporation residues recoiled from the target were separated in flight from the primary beam by the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS and subsequently identified on the basis of energy-position-time correlation measurement. The $\alpha$-particle energy and half-life of 215U were determined to be $8.428(30)$ MeV and $ 0.73_{-0.29}^{+1.33}$ ms, respectively.

Abstract:The new neutron-deficient isotope U-216 was produced in the complete-fusion reaction W-180(Ar-40,(4)n) U-216. The evaporation residues were separated from the primary beam in flight by the gas-filled recoil separator Spectrometer for Heavy Atoms and Nuclear Structure. The activities have been identified by the alpha-alpha position and time correlation measurements. Two alpha-decaying states with E alpha = 8384(30) keV, T-1/2 = 4.72(-1.57)(+4.72) ms for the ground state and E alpha = 10582(30) keV, T-1/2 = 0.74(-0.29)(+1.34) ms for an isomeric state were identified in U-216.

Abstract:A new, very short-lived neutron-deficient isotope Np-222 was produced in the complete-fusion reaction Re-187(Ar-40, 5n) Np-222, and observed at the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS. The new isotope Np-222 was identified by employing a recoil-alpha correlation measurement, and six alpha-decay chains were established for it. The decay properties of Np-222 with E-alpha = 10016(33) keV and T-1/2 = 380(-110)(+260) ns were determined experimentally. The alpha-decay systematics of Np isotopes is improved by adding the new data for Np-222, which validates the N = 126 shell effect in Np isotopes. The evolution of the N = 126 shell closure is discussed in the neutron-deficient nuclei up to Np within the framework of alpha-decay reduced width.

Abstract:The new isotope Np-224 was produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction of Ar-40 + Re-187 and identified through the evaporation residue (ER)-alpha-decay correlation measurements using the digital pulse processing technique. Two alpha-decay branches with a energies of 9137(20) and 8868(62) keV were assigned to Np-224, decaying to two excited states in Pa-220. The half-life of Np-224 was deduced to be 38(-11)(+26) mu s.

Abstract:We report new data on the Sb-136 6(-) yrast isomer with T-1/2 = 489(40) mu s and pi g(7/2)(1) x nu f(7/2)(3) configuration, populated in the projectile fission of U-238 on a Be-9 target. The analysis confirms the lifetime, providing a good accuracy measurement. In addition, the decay of the isomer to the ground state is newly suggested. Our result for the isomeric decay scheme is in a good agreement with shell-model calculations.

Abstract:The experimental set-up, methods and results on the synthesis and identification of the new isotope 265 107Bh are presented in this paper. The new isotope was produced by the complete fusion-evaporation reaction of 243Am with 168MeV 26Mg at the Sector Focus Cyclotron of Heavy Ion Research Facility Lanzhou. The reaction products were transported and collected using helium-jet technique and a set of rotating wheel system. The identification of the new isotope was made by observing of correlated a-particle decays chain between the new isotope 265Bh and its 261Db and 257Lr daughters. A total of 8 correlated decay events of 265Bh and 4 decay events of 264Bh were observed. The new nuclide 265Bh has a half-life of 0.94+0.70 -0.31s and decays by alpha-particle emission with decay energy of Ea=(9.24±0.05)MeV. The half-life and a decay energy of 265Bh from this experiment are consistent with theoretical predictions.

Abstract:The near-symmetric complete fusion reaction Kr78+Ag107→Bi*185 was studied at the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS with an attempt to synthesize the extremely neutron-deficient proton-unbound Bi182,183 isotopes. No decay events which could be attributed to them were observed. The two- and three-particle evaporation residues Hg180,179 ( αp, αpn ) and Pb183,182 ( pn, p2n ) were identified. Their production cross sections have been measured at two bombarding energies. Based on the yields of Pb182,183 in the present work and the systematics of the ratios between the cross sections of p(x−1)n and xn evaporation channels for the most neutron-deficient odd- Z nuclei above lead, the upper limits for the half-lives of Bi182,183 were estimated to be less than 0.3μs . https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.110.014326 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The N=130 short-lived isotope 223Np was produced as evaporation residue (ER) in the fusion reaction 40Ar + 187Re at the gas-filled recoil separator Spectrometer for Heavy Atom and Nuclear Structure (SHANS). It was identified through temporal and spatial correlations with α decays of 215Ac and/or 211Fr, the third and fourth members of the α-decay chain starting from 223Np. The pileup signals of ER(223Np)–α(223Np)–α(219Pa) were resolved by using the digital pulse processing technique. An α decay with half-life of T1/2=2.15(52100) μs and energy of Eα=9477(44)keV was attributed to 223Np. Spin and parity of 9/2− were tentatively proposed for the ground state of 223Np by combining the reduced α-decay width and large-scale shell-model calculations. This assignment together with the proton separation energy disprove the existence of a Z=92 subshell closure.

Abstract:The newneutron-deficient isotope Ac-205 was synthesized in the complete-fusion reaction Tm-169(Ca-40, 4n)Ac-205. The evaporation residues were separated in-flight by the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS in Lanzhou and subsequently identified by the alpha-alpha position and time correlation method. The alpha-decay energy and half-life of Ac-205 were determined to be 7.935(30) MeV and 20(-9)(+97) ms, respectively. Previously reported decay properties of the ground state in Ac-206 were confirmed.

Abstract:The new thorium isotope Th-207 has been produced in the 5n evaporation channel of the fusion reaction Ar-36 + Hf-176. It was separated in flight by the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS and identified on the basis of a correlated alpha-decay chain. The alpha decay of Th-207, measured with an alpha-particle energy of 8167(21) keV and a half-life of 9.7(-4.4)(+46.6) ms, is assigned to originate from ground state. By combining with existing data, we find that the a-decay energies of nuclei with Z > 82 and N < 126 show a regular and distinct odd-even staggering (OES) rather than the commonly supposed smooth pattern. A theoretical analysis has been performed within relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and large-scale shell-model approaches. It is found that the OES originates from both pairing correlations and blocking of particular orbitals by unpaired nucleons. Of particular importance is that pairing correlations result in the OES not only through the contribution of pairing energy to binding energy, but also by configuration mixing induced by scattering nucleons to orbitals away from Fermi levels.

Abstract:It was reported in our previous paper in 2004 that the unknown isotope Pro near the proton drip line was produced via the fusion-evaporation reaction Ca-40 + (92)mo, and a 99keV gamma line was assigned to the (EC + beta(+)) decay of Pm-129 for the first time. In order to confirm the assignment, following three new evidences are provided in this paper. 1) The excitation function of the 99keV gamma line was made from 164MeV to 190MeV of the incident energy. 2) A cross bombardment Ar-36(+) Ru-96 was carried out, from which the same 99keV gamma transition was observed. 3) The nuclear potential-energy-surface (PES) Of 129Pm was calculated by using the Woods-Saxon Strutinsky method. The ground state spin and parity of Pm-129 was then predicted to be 5/2(-). This prediction leads to a 5/2(-) low-lying state in the daughter nucleus Nd-129 via the (EC + beta) decay of Pm-129 favorably.
