Abstract:Tunable emission carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) are highly desirable for the preparation of optoelectronic devices, especially white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). In most available studies, polychromatic CPDs are synthesized using aromatic molecules as precursors. However, few studies report the successful synthesis of polychromatic CPDs using two or more unconjugated precursors. In this work, we prepare multicolor fluorescent CPDs from a single unconjugated precursor, glucose, via a hydrothermal reaction. By controlling the particle size and degree of graphitization of the synthesized CPDs, their emission wavelength can be tuned in the range 440-625 nm (i.e., almost the entire visible region). Furthermore, the CPDs can be used to construct LEDs of varying colors, including WLEDs (CIE coordinates: 0.34, 0.36) with the correlated color temperature and color rendering index of 4997 K and 92.69, respectively. In brief, the strategy proposed in this study successfully converts unconjugated glucose into high-performance LEDs with great application potential.

Abstract:In this work, a universal approach is presented for the large‐scale, controlled synthesis of carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) with tailored solid‐state emission properties through incorporating selected fluorescent dyes into self‐assembled CPDs nanostructures. The resulting dye‐incorporated CPDs (DICP‐dots) exhibit exceptional solid‐state emission and have been demonstrated with the multifunctional capabilities including efficient light harvesting, nanocarriers, and light‐emitting diodes. Carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) exhibiting tunable solid‐state emission (SSE) show great promise as rare‐earth‐free functional phosphors. Nevertheless, progress in this field has been hindered by the structural heterogeneity of CPDs and a lack of fundamental understanding of the underlying emission mechanisms. In this work, a universal approach is presented for the large‐scale, controlled synthesis of CPDs with tailored SSE properties. This strategy leverages intraparticle Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) by incorporating selected fluorophores into self‐assembled CPDs nanostructures. The resulting CPDs exhibit exceptional SSE characteristics, such as high quantum yields, adjustable band structures, narrow emission linewidths, and excellent photostability in both solution and solid‐state. Moreover, the multifunctional capabilities of these CPDs are demonstrated, including efficient light harvesting, their potential as nanocarriers, and their application in light‐emitting diodes (LEDs). This findings establish self‐assembly‐mediated doping as a robust platform for engineering CPDs with unique SSE properties, underpinned by the principles of intraparticle FRET.

Abstract:A new kind of carbon dots based phosphor is developed for light emitting diodes (LED) by adsorbing carbon dots to starch particles. The bonding mechanism is based on hydrogen bonding of surface functional groups of carbon dots and starch particles. Aggregation-induced quenching is avoided and the thermal stability of the carbon dots phosphor is enhanced. The carbon dots phosphor is used as color convert material for white LED devices. The white LED device fabricated has an ultra-high color rendering index of 93.9, almost pure white CIE coordinate at (0.332, 0.336) and moderate CCT at 5498 K. The photoluminescence intensity (PL) under constant temperature and alternative condition is both tested to study the thermal stability of the phosphor. The PL intensity shows no obvious change after 3 days of aging; only 4% of PL loss after 10 cycles of 25 °C /85 °C alternation. Based on its good PL properties and thermal stability, this carbon dots phosphor has great potential for white LED lighting.

Abstract:Red carbon dots (R-CDs), yellow-green carbon dots (Y-CDs) and blue carbon dots (B-CDs) were successfully synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method using o-phenylenediamine and dopamine hydrochloride as raw materials by adjusting the pH of the reaction solvent. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra and optical properties of CDs show that these three CDs have similar types but different contents of functional groups, resulting in different fluorescence emission. R-CDs and Y-CDs compound with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form bright R-CDs/PVA and Y-CDs/PVA phosphors, while B-CDs/PVA phosphors have weak fluorescence. Compared with R-CDs and Y-CDs solution, the fluorescence emission of the phosphors was significantly enhanced for the matrix inhibits the process of non-radiative transition. Based on the thermostability and broad emission peaks of CD-based phosphors, light-emitting diode (LED) was fabricated using R-CDs/PVA and Y-CDs/PVA phosphors as fluorescent material. The prepared LED exhibits white light with a color coordinate of (0.32, 0.33), correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6067 K and color rendering index (CRI) of 78.2. The environmental-friendly CD-based white light-emitting diode (WLED) was successfully fabricated.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Currently, solid‐state fluorescent carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) have attracted attention increasingly due to their applications for optoelectronic display. However, designing CPDs possessing solid‐state fluorescence and clarifying the fluorescence mechanism still remain challenging. Herein, we initially synthesized a novel type of polythiophene derivatives CPDs, poly‐4,4'‐(thiophene‐3,4‐diyl)dibenzoic acid carbonized polymer dots (PDBA‐CPDs) with solid‐state fluorescence. Subsequently, the structural and optical characterization revealed that solid‐state fluorescence originating from the aggregation induced emission of the CPDs. In brief, in aggregation state, the remaining polymer structure groups on the surface of the CPDs overlapped and weakened the non‐radiative transition, enhancing solid‐state fluorescence emission. Thirdly, three polythiophene‐derived CPDs were designed to further demonstrate the aggregation induced solid‐state fluorescence mechanism. Finally, owing to their unique properties of solid‐state fluorescence, the white LEDs (light emitting diodes) were fabricated with high color rendering index (CRI) of 82.7 and CIE coordinates of (0.37, 0.39) using commercial 460 nm chip. Abstract:Carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) are impressive imaging probes with great potential for enriching the library of metal-free fluorescent materials, yet current strategies have struggled to achieve products that emit full-color light in a single reaction system. Establishing an efficient and robust synthesis approach that unlocks the color barrier to the luminescence centers of specific CPDs remains a challenge. Herein, the surface-state engineering of pyridine and amide in the indole system to create a palette of resolvable full-color light-emissive CPDs is reported. Detailed structural analysis revealed that cationic polymerization and oxidation reactions potentially contribute to the formation of the main frameworks and emission centers of the final CPDs, with emissive oxygen- and nitrogen-based centers fixed by cross-linked polymer structures. This study provides valuable insight into the energy absorbance and photoluminescence mechanism of CPDs and introduces additional reactants (benzo heterocycle) into CPD research.

Abstract:Despite the advancements in synthetic methods, it is still challenging to prepare white light‐emitting carbon dots for solid‐state white light‐emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, the synthesis and characterization of a carbonized polymer dot (CPD) that emits white light in the solid state are presented. The reaction of an oxygen‐rich precursor, trimethylolpropane tri(cyclic carbonate) ether, with nitrogen‐rich melamine in an alcohol via a single‐step solvothermal method affords CPDs with hydroxyurethane and CN groups. The morphology of the CPDs can be regulated by changing the reaction time. Transmission electron microscopy reveals structural evolution from flocculent polymers to dandelion‐like and spherical particles with an increase in the carbonization time from 6 to 12 and 18 h, respectively. The dandelion‐like CPDs exhibit a relatively high quantum yield of 7.5% in the solid state, which is ascribed to the abundant surface poly(hydroxyurethane) chains that restrict the aggregation‐caused quenching of luminescence. It is proposed that multiple coexistent clusters generate different emission sites, thereby leading to white light emission. Loose clusters formed from hydroxyurethane and CN bonds, which have a low degree of conjugation, emit blue light, whereas compact clusters generated through interactions between the hydroxyurethane and CN bonds of poly(hydroxyurethane) and carbon cores emit yellow light.

Abstract:White light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are very important energy-saving lighting devices. It is still a big challenge to fabricate pure white LEDs using low-cost, easy-to-process and environment-friendly phosphors. Herein, we report a pure white LED fabricated by combining rationally designed fluorescein-centered polymers with a blue LED chip. Pure white LEDs with Commission International de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.33), a satisfactory color rendering index (CRI) of 82 and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5230 K were achieved. Covalently embedding fluorescein into the center of the polymer chain realized molecular dispersion of fluorescein. Of significance, by varying the types of the side groups of the polymer, the fluorescence properties of the embedded fluorescein unit can be regulated. The performance parameters (i.e., emission spectra, CIE coordinates, CRI and CCT) of the as-fabricated LEDs could also be tailored by varying the working voltages, and the types and amounts of fluorescein-centered polymers.
Achieving Color‐Tunable Solid‐State Fluorescence by Adjusting the Molecular‐State Chromophores on Carbonized Polymer Dots

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted great interest in recent years due to their excellent fluorescent properties, convenient synthetic methods, and wide availability of source materials. However, although most CDs exhibit excellent luminescent properties in solution, achieving solid‐state fluorescence (SSF) CDs is still difficult due to aggregation‐caused quenching, and realizing color‐tunable SSF‐CDs remains a serious challenge. Herein, the SSF‐carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) are successfully obtained by one‐step hydrothermal of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and citric acid. The photoluminescence centers of these CPDs are molecular‐state chromophores, which are proved as imidazo [1,2‐a] pyridine‐7‐carboxylic acid, 1,2,3,5‐tetrahydro‐5‐oxo‐ (IPCA) derivatives by NMR. Further investigation reveals that the formation and distribution of IPCA derivatives would affect the bandgaps when CPDs particles aggregate, which is also verified by density functional theory calculations. Based on the above conclusion, the blue, green, yellow, and orange SSF CPDs are successfully obtained, and the multicolor and white emission light emitting diodes are effectively fabricated by these CPDs.
Ultra-broadband triple-peak white light-emitting carbonized polymer dots materials based on Förster resonance energy transfer

Abstract:Carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) with white-light-emitting property have greatly promising application in next generation of lighting and display technologies. However, most of the reported CPD materials exhibit single peak emission and narrow emission band, resulting in difficulty to obtain white-light emission. In this work, the ultra-broadband triple-peak emission (red, green, and blue) CD-based materials with high-efficiency white light-emitting property are realized for the first time by the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Blue and green emissions are derived from the fluorescence and phosphorescence of donor CPDs, while the red light is derived from receptor by FRET. Remarkably, the fabricated CPD materials show bright pure white-light emission with high overall quantum yield (QY) of 36% and the full width at half maximum of 235 nm. Besides, afterglow colors of CPD-based materials can be tuned from green to red by adjusting the ratio of donor and acceptor. Based on the high-efficiency and wide-spectrum pure white light emission characteristics of CPD-based composites, white light emitting diodes were fabricated and they exhibit bright warm white light with CIE and CCT of (0.35, 0.31) and 4041 K.

Abstract:We realized white light-emitting diodes with high color rendering index (85-96) and widely variable color temperatures (2805-7786 K) by combining three phosphors based on carbon dots and polymer dots, whose solid-state photoluminescence self-quenching was efficiently suppressed within a polyvinyl pyrrolidone matrix. All three phosphors exhibited dominant absorption in the UV spectral region, which ensured the weak reabsorption and no energy transfer crosstalk. The WLEDs showed excellent color stability against the increasing current because of the similar response of the tricolor phosphors to the UV light variation.

Abstract:In this paper, a unique strategy is proposed to modulate fluorescence color of carbon dots (CDs) under both aqueous solution and solid state for bright multicolor light-emitting diodes (LEDs) applications. We report facile synthesis of dual-peak-emissive CDs with self-quenching-resistant character under solid state through hydrothermal method, and investigate the origins of dual-peak emission for the first time. In addition, based on the unique dual-peak-emissive phenomenon, acid mediated PL behaviors were realized by changing the pH value of hydrothermal precursors. We realized the color-tunable fluorescence under aqueous solution from blue (B-CDs) to yellow-green (YG-CDs) color and solid state from yellow to orange red color. The changed PL behaviors are attributed to the more conjugated structure inside CDs due to elevated carbonization degree. Furthermore, the red-shifted fluorescence from aqueous solution to solid state is ascribed to supramolecular cross-linking between adjacent particles. Thus, by manipulating the supramolecular cross-linking degree of YG-CDs in PVA, a series of luminescent blue-shifted CDs/PVA composite phosphors were obtained. Finally, we fabricate the almost full-color and white color LEDs with decent performances, which indicate their potential for solid-state lighting applications.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs)-based nanomaterials exhibited promising potential in the fields of biomedicine, bioanalysis, and biosensors. In this work, multi-colored fluorescent carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) ranging from blue to red are obtained using different synthesis methods using citric acid and urea as raw materials, and the controllable synthesis of CPDs with multi-color fluorescence is successfully realized. Then, the photoluminescence (PL) mechanism of CPDs is studied using multiple characterization methods, and the key factors affecting the fluorescence emission wavelength of CPDs are discussed. It is shown that the fluorescence of the CPDs originates from three main components: the carbon nuclei in the intrinsic state, the functional groups in the surface state, and the molecular fluorophores adsorbed on the surface of the CPDs. The reaction temperature and reaction time affect the effective conjugation size of the carbon nuclei, which in turn affects the fluorescence redshift of CPDs; the reaction solvent greatly alters the surface state of CPDs (e.g. surface defects and functional groups), which leads to a significant redshift in the fluorescence of CPDs; the presence of molecular fluorophores facilitates the fluorescence redshift of CPDs. Finally, we have successfully applied the prepared red fluorescent CPDs for in vitro cell imaging. The study on the color regulation mechanism of CPDs is of great significance for the controllable preparation of high-performance fluorescent CDs and their application in the field of biomedicine.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) are admirable nanomaterials due to their superior optical properties and low cost. However, regulation of the emission colors in CDs for lighting device still remains a challenge. In this work, we developed a green hydrothermal method to obtain three emission colors of CDs using L-tyrosine (for blue CDs), o-phenylendiamine (for green CDs) and L-tyrosine/o-phenylendiamine mixture (for orange-red CDs). These CDs possess good water dispersibility, strong emission with high quantum yields, and excellent photostability. Furthermore, the resulting CDs were dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to yield solid state films, where the self-quenching effect in solid state was effectively avoided. A full-color light-emitting diode was fabricated by packing the CDs-PVA composites on the top of a UV-chip, which have superior potential applications in CDs-based solid-state lighting system.

Abstract:<p>Carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) have promise in the fields of sensing, bioimaging, and optoelectronic devices due to their excellent optical properties, favorable biocompatibility, and superior stability. Biomass CPDs present greater advantages in terms of their lack of toxicity, low cost, easy preparation, and feasibility in terms of luminescence-related applications. Here, two kinds of fluorescent CPDs were obtained through the simple hydrothermal method using biomass avocado peel (CPDs-P) and sarcocarp (CPDs-S) as carbon sources. Interestingly, these two biomass CPDs have excellent applications in ion detection and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Analysis and results show that CPDs-P possess better sensitivity to Fe<sup>3+</sup> because they have more oxygen-containing functional groups. After mixing with epoxy resin, warm and cold white LEDs with CIE (Commission Internationale de L 'Eclairage) coordinates (0.38, 0.39) and (0.29, 0.34) were constructed successfully from extremely stable CPDs-P and CPDs-S. The high color rendering index of the prepared white LEDs are 90.47 and 84.54. This study shows that these biomass CPDs are promising materials in sensing and white LEDs illumination.</p>

Abstract:Optimizing the optoelectronic characteristics of low-dimensional carbon dots (CDs) through surface modifications and doping has proven instrumental in tailoring them for diverse applications. This study explores a facile and economical hydrothermal synthesis method for generating Carbonized Polymer Dots using o-phenylenediamine at different temperatures. The resulting materials exhibit structural and morphological variations linked to the synthesis temperature. A transition from carbon dots (CDs) embedded in reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-like sheet structures at low temperatures to the core-shell structure at the highest temperature is observed in HR-TEM, implying the formation of CPDs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) corroborates these findings, showing an augmented degree of graphitization in alignment with HR-TEM results. The photoluminescence spectra of CPDs synthesized at the lowest temperature exhibit multiple emission peaks, resulting in a yellowish-orange color. Utilizing these CPDs to fabricate light-emitting diodes (LEDs) produces a vivid bright-green emission with CIE coordinates (0.378, 0.522). Moreover, the CPDs demonstrate solvatochromism across diverse solvents of varying polarity, covering the entire visible spectrum. This intriguing solvatochromic effect positions the CPDs as promising materials for polarity probing applications.

Abstract:Multicolor carbon dot (CD)‐based nanomaterials offer a variety of opportunities for potential applications in bioimaging, optoelectronic devices, and information security. However, it still remains a challenge to modulate the conjugated π‐structure of CDs to achieve multicolor room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Herein, the authors present a strategy based on thermally driven amorphous−crystalline phase transition to achieve multicolor carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) with the emission color tunable from green to orange‐red. This is the first report on multicolor RTP emission from CDs by means of thermal stimulus. Further investigations reveal that the formation of self‐protective covalently crosslinked frameworks and codoping of multiple heteroatoms play a crucial role in the production of RTP. RTP color tunability can be attributed to different crystalline contents of the conjugated π‐domain within CPDs. Potential application of the developed CPDs as printable and writable security inks for advanced multilevel anti‐counterfeiting and encryption is demonstrated. This work paves a path for the development of multicolor RTP materials and suggests great potential of CDs in exploiting novel optical materials toward intriguing applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are attracting much interest due to their excellent photoelectric properties and wide range of potential applications. However, it is still a challenge to regulate their bandgap emissions to achieve full-color CDs with high emissions. Herein, we propose an approach for producing full-color emissive CDs by employing a solvent engineering strategy. By only tuning the volume ratio of water and dimethylformamide (H2O/DMF), the photoluminescence (PL) emission wavelengths of the CDs can be changed from 451 to 654 nm. Different fluorescence features of multicolor CDs were systematically investigated. XRD, SEM, TEM, Abs/PL/PLE, XPS, and PL decay lifetime characterizations provided conclusive evidence supporting the extent to which the solvent controlled the dehydration and carbonization processes of the precursors, leading to a variation in their emission color from red to blue. The as-prepared CDs exhibited excellent and stable fluorescence performance even after being heated at 80 °C for 48 h and with UV light continuously irradiated for 15 h. Based on their excellent fluorescent properties and photothermal stability, bright multicolor light-emitting diodes with a high CRI of up to 91 were obtained. We anticipate that these full-color emissive CDs are beneficial for applications in lighting, display, and other fields.

Preparation of multicolor-emissive carbon dots with high quantum yields and their epoxy composites for fluorescence anti-counterfeiting and light-emitting devices

Abstract:A facile solvothermal method for synthesizing full-color-emission carbon dots (CDs) was developed using p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and maleic anhydride (MAH) as raw materials under mild reaction conditions. By only changing the solvents, blue light-emitting carbon dots (B-CDs), green light-emitting carbon dots (G-CDs), orange light-emitting carbon dots (O-CDs) and red light-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs) can be realized at 180 °C for 4h, and their emission wavelengths cover the visible spectrum ranging from 420 to 607 nm. The relative quantum yields for B-CDs, G-CDs, O-CDs and R-CDs are 55.6%, 76.5%, 59.5% and 30.9%, respectively. The different fluorescence features of these CDs are mainly attributed to various-sized sp2 conjugated domains with N- and O-decorated surfaces. The as-prepared CDs have good thermal properties with an initial thermal decomposition temperature of 187-223 °C and significant pH-dependent fluorescence relationships. Even after heat treatment at 100 °C for 1 h and staying at room temperature for 30 days, the four CDs can possess stable fluorescence performance. After CDs are introduced to epoxy resins (EP), the resulting CDs/EP composites with 0.25-1.0% CDs have enhanced tensile strengths (60-69 MPa) because of the higher conversion of epoxy groups and the excellent interface interaction between CDs and EP matrix. CDs/EP composites also display good thermal properties, high light transparency of over 80% and good photoluminescence stability. Using an ultraviolet chip as the excitation source combined with a CDs/EP film, bright monochromatic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and white LEDs are easily obtained. CDs/EP composites can potentially be used as fluorescence anti-counterfeiting device.

Abstract:Developing room‐temperature phosphorescent carbon dots with extended afterglow and multicolor emission is challenging. This work proposes a novel strategy using o‐phenylenediamine and polyacrylic acid to synthesize carbonized polymer dots embedded in B2O3 matrix. The resulting materials exhibit dual‐emitting ultralong phosphorescence in blue and lime green shades under different UV excitations, with a remarkable phosphorescence lifetime of up to 49 s and potential applications in anticounterfeiting and information encryption. Advancing a metal‐free room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) material that exhibits multicolor emission, remarkable RTP lifetime, and high quantum yield still faces the challenge of achieving intersystem crossing between singly and triplet excited states, as well as the rapid decay of triplet excited states due to nonradiative losses. In this study, a novel strategy is proposed to address these limitations by incorporating o‐phenylenediamine, which generates multiple luminescent centers, and long‐chain polyacrylic acid to synthesize carbonized polymer dots (CPDs). These CPDs are then embedded in a rigid B2O3 matrix, effectively limiting nonradiative losses through the synergistic effects of polymer cross‐linking and the rigid matrix. The resulting CPD‐based materials exhibit remarkable ultralong phosphorescence in shades of blue and lime green, with a visible lifetime of up to 49 s and a high phosphorescence quantum yield. Simultaneously, this study demonstrates the practical applicability of these excellent material properties in anti‐counterfeiting and information encryption.
