Abstract:The current development of 5G networks represents a breakthrough in the design of communication networks, for its ability to provide a single platform enabling a variety of different services, from enhanced mobile broadband communications, automated driving, Internet-of-Things, with its huge number of connected devices, etc. Nevertheless, looking at the current development of technologies and new services, it is already possible to envision the need to move beyond 5G with a new architecture incorporating new services and technologies. The goal of this paper is to motivate the need to move to a sixth generation (6G) of mobile communication networks, starting from a gap analysis of 5G, and predicting a new synthesis of near future services, like hologram interfaces, ambient sensing intelligence, a pervasive introduction of artificial intelligence and the incorporation of technologies, like TeraHertz (THz) or Visible Light Communications (VLC), 3-dimensional coverage.

Abstract:Mobile communications have been undergoing a generational change every ten years or so. However, the time difference between the so-called "G's" is also decreasing. While fifth-generation (5G) systems are becoming a commercial reality, there is already significant interest in systems beyond 5G, which we refer to as the sixth generation (6G) of wireless systems. In contrast to the already published papers on the topic, we take a top-down approach to 6G. More precisely, we present a holistic discussion of 6G systems beginning with lifestyle and societal changes driving the need for next-generation networks. This is followed by a discussion into the technical requirements needed to enable 6G applications, based on which we dissect key challenges and possibilities for practically realizable system solutions across all layers of the Open Systems Interconnection stack (i.e., from applications to the physical layer). Since many of the 6G applications will need access to an order-of-magnitude more spectrum, utilization of frequencies between 100 GHz and 1 THz becomes of paramount importance. As such, the 6G ecosystem will feature a diverse range of frequency bands, ranging from below 6 GHz up to 1 THz. We comprehensively characterize the limitations that must be overcome to realize working systems in these bands and provide a unique perspective on the physical and higher layer challenges relating to the design of next-generation core networks, new modulation and coding methods, novel multiple-access techniques, antenna arrays, wave propagation, radio frequency transceiver design, and real-time signal processing. We rigorously discuss the fundamental changes required in the core networks of the future, such as the redesign or significant reduction of the transport architecture that serves as a major source of latency for time-sensitive applications. This is in sharp contrast to the pr-sent hierarchical network architectures that are not suitable to realize many of the anticipated 6G services. While evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of key candidate 6G technologies, we differentiate what may be practically achievable over the next decade, relative to what is possible in theory. Keeping this in mind, we present concrete research challenges for each of the discussed system aspects, providing inspiration for what follows.

Abstract:Since the 1980s, the world has witnessed new mobile generations every decade. Each new generation is better than the previous in some ways. The recently emerging generation, 5G has several advanced features. However, it is doubted that there will be several short comings of this generation when compared with the other contemporary ICT alternatives. These short comings are going to be the main motivation for the next new mobile generation. According to the existing trends, this new version will be known as the Sixth Generation of Mobile Communication (6G). In this article, we show the main driving forces behind 6G, its expected features and key technologies are also been discussed.

Abstract:The evolution of cellular networks has played a pivotal role in shaping the modern telecommunications landscape. This paper explores the journey of cellular network generations, beginning with the introduction of Japan's first commercial 1G network by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Corporation in 1979. This analog wireless network quickly expanded to become the country's first national 1G network within a remarkably short period. The transition from analog to digital networks marked a significant turning point in the wireless industry, enabled by advancements in MOSFET (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) technology. MOSFET, originally developed at Bell Labs in 1959, underwent modifications to suit cellular networks in the early 1990s, facilitating the shift to digital wireless mobile networks. The advent of the 2G generation brought forth the first commercial digital cellular network in 1991, sparking recognition among manufacturers and mobile network operators of the importance of robust networks and efficient architecture. As the wireless industry continued to experience exponential growth, the significance of effective network infrastructure became increasingly evident. In this research, our aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of the entire spectrum of cellular network generations, ranging from 1G to the potential future of 7G. By tracing the evolution of these networks, we aim to shed light on the transformative developments that have shaped the telecommunications landscape and explore the possibilities that lie ahead in the realm of cellular technology.

Abstract:As the deployment of 5G mobile radio networks gains momentum across the globe, the wireless research community is already planning the successor of 5G. In this paper, we highlight the shortcomings of 5G in meeting the needs of more data-intensive, low-latency, and ultra-high-reliability applications. We then discuss the salient characteristics of the 6G network following a hierarchical approach including the social, economic, and technological aspects. We also discuss some of the key technologies expected to support the move towards 6G. Finally, we quantify and summarize the research work related to beyond 5G and 6G networks through an extensive search of publications and research groups and present a possible timeline for 6G activities.

Abstract:The sixth-generation (6G) technology of mobile networks will establish new standards to fulfill unreachable performance requirements by fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks. This is due to the high requirements for more intelligent network, ultra-lower latency, extreme network communication speed, and supporting massive number of various connected applications. In the long term, the convergence of various business developments with communication platforms, as initiated by 5G, will exaggerate and highlight areas where 5G's capabilities will fall short of performance requirements. Motivated by the development of applications in massive connections, future networks, developments, and technological advancements for mobile communications that go beyond fifth-generation (B5G) networks are being developed. In this context, highly immersive applications are demanded, such as three-dimensional (3D) communications, digital twins, or massive extended reality (XR)/virtual reality (VR) applications, which will need 6G capabilities to be realized at scale to be commercially feasible. Mainly, we anticipate that only the upcoming 6G networks will be capable of running extremely high-performance connectivity with massive numbers of connected devices, even under laborious scenarios such as extreme density, diverse mobility, and energetic environments. In this article, we look at the most recent trends and future emerging trends that are possible to operate 6G network. Paper aims to provide more inclusive and brief review about 6G mobile communication technology in one survey paper. Initially, a comprehensive overview of the 6G system is introduced in terms of visions, drivers, requirements, architecture, and usage scenarios required to enable 6G applications. After that, the opportunities and advantages of 6G mobile technology has been discussed. Further, the promising new techniques that enable 6G technology has been highlighted. This is followed by a potential discussion of challenges and research directions. This article is envisioned to serve as an informative guideline to stimulate interest and further studies for subsequent research and development of 6G networks. Abstract:The contours of 6G -- its key technical components and driving requirements -- are finally coming into focus. Through twenty questions and answers, this article defines the important aspects of 6G across four categories. First, we identify the key themes and forces driving the development of 6G, and what will make 6G unique. We argue that 6G requirements and system design will be driven by (i) the tenacious pursuit of spectral (bits/Hz/area), energy (bits/Joule), and cost (bits/dollar) efficiencies, and (ii) three new service enhancements: sensing/localization/awareness, compute, and global broadband/emergency connectivity. Second, we overview the important role of spectrum in 6G, what new spectrum to expect in 6G, and outline how the different bands will be used to provide 6G services. Third, we focus our attention on the 6G physical layer, including waveforms, MIMO advancements, and the potential use of deep learning. Finally, we explore how global connectivity will be achieved in 6G, through non-terrestrial networks as well as low-cost network expansion via disaggregation and O-RAN. Although 6G standardization activities will not begin until late 2025, meaning this article is by definition speculative, our predictions are informed by several years of intensive research and discussions. Our goal is to provide a grounded perspective that will be helpful to both researchers and engineers as we move into the 6G era.

Abstract:With the open of the scale-up commercial deployment of 5G network, more and more researchers and related organizations began to consider the next generation of mobile communication system. This article will explore the 6G concept for 2030s. Firstly, this article summarizes the future 6G vision with four keywords: "Intelligent Connectivity", "Deep Connectivity", "Holographic Connectivity" and "Ubiquitous Connectivity", and these four keywords together constitute the 6G overall vision of "Wherever you think, everything follows your heart ". Then, the technical requirements and challenges to realize the 6G vision are analyzed, including peak throughput, higher energy efficiency, connection every where and anytime, new theories and technologies, self-aggregating communications fabric, and some non-technical challenges. Then the potential key technologies of 6G are classified and presented: communication technologies on new spectrum, including terahertz communication and visible light communication; fundamental technologies, including sparse theory (compressed sensing), new channel coding technology, large-scale antenna and flexible spectrum usage; special technical features, including Space-Air-Ground-Sea integrated communication and wireless tactile network. Abstract:The 5G system has finally begun commercialization, and now is the time to start discussing the road map for the 6G system. While the 5G system was designed with a focus on discovering new service types for high speed, low-latency, and massive connective services, the evolution of the network interface for 6G should be considered with an eye toward supporting these complicated communication environments. As machine-driven data traffic continues to increase exponentially, 6G must be able to support a series of connection methods that did not previously exist. In departure from base-station-oriented cell densification, network diversification is necessary if we are to satisfy the comprehensive requirements of end terminals for diverse applications. In this article, we predict what will drive 6G and look at what key requirements should be considered in 6G. We then diversify four types of network architectures according to link characteristics, communication ranges, and target services. The four types of networks play complementary roles while at the same time collaborating across the entire 6G network. Lastly, we call attention to key technologies and challenges in the air, network, and assistive technologies that will have to be addressed when designing the 6G system.

Abstract:Reliable data connectivity is vital for the ever increasingly intelligent, automated, and ubiquitous digital world. Mobile networks are the data highways and, in a fully connected, intelligent digital world, will need to connect everything, including people to vehicles, sensors, data, cloud resources, and even robotic agents. Fifth generation (5G) wireless networks, which are currently being deployed, offer significant advances beyond LTE, but may be unable to meet the full connectivity demands of the future digital society. Therefore, this article discusses technologies that will evolve wireless networks toward a sixth generation (6G) and which we consider as enablers for several potential 6G use cases. We provide a fullstack, system-level perspective on 6G scenarios and requirements, and select 6G technologies that can satisfy them either by improving the 5G design or by introducing completely new communication paradigms.

Abstract:The fifth generation (5G) mobile networks are envisaged to enable a plethora of breakthrough advancements in wireless technologies, providing support of a diverse set of services over a single platform. While the deployment of 5G systems is scaling up globally, it is time to look ahead for beyond 5G systems. This is driven by the emerging societal trends, calling for fully automated systems and intelligent services supported by extended reality and haptics communications. To accommodate the stringent requirements of their prospective applications, which are data-driven and defined by extremely low-latency, ultra-reliable, fast and seamless wireless connectivity, research initiatives are currently focusing on a progressive roadmap towards the sixth generation (6G) networks. In this article, we shed light on some of the major enabling technologies for 6G, which are expected to revolutionize the fundamental architectures of cellular networks and provide multiple homogeneous artificial intelligence-empowered services, including distributed communications, control, computing, sensing, and energy, from its core to its end nodes. Particularly, this paper aims to answer several 6G framework related questions: What are the driving forces for the development of 6G? How will the enabling technologies of 6G differ from those in 5G? What kind of applications and interactions will they support which would not be supported by 5G? We address these questions by presenting a profound study of the 6G vision and outlining five of its disruptive technologies, i.e., terahertz communications, programmable metasurfaces, drone-based communications, backscatter communications and tactile internet, as well as their potential applications. Then, by leveraging the state-of-the-art literature surveyed for each technology, we discuss their requirements, key challenges, and open research problems.

While 5G network deployments are maturing, significant efforts are being made to standardize 6G, which is expected to be commercially introduced by 2030. This paper provides unique perspectives on the 6G network (radio and core) architecture(s) from the anticipated 6G use cases to meet the necessary performance requirements. To cater for the key 6G use cases, the 6G architecture must integrate different network-level functions in a multiplicity of virtual cloud environments, leveraging the advancements of distributed processing, artificial intelligence, and securely integrating different sub-networks e.g., terrestrial, and non-terrestrial networks into the overall 6G network. This paper characterizes the impact of 6G architectures from a deployment perspective with backwards compatibility in mind.

Abstract:Ever since the introduction of fifth generation (5G) mobile communications, the mobile telecommunications industry has been debating whether 5G is an “evolution” or “revolution” from the previous legacy mobile networks, but now that 5G has been commercially available for the past few years, the research direction has recently shifted towards the upcoming generation of mobile communication system, known as the sixth generation (6G), which is expected to drastically provide significant and evolutionary, if not revolutionary, improvements in mobile networks. The promise of extremely high data rates (in terabits), artificial intelligence (AI), ultra-low latency, near-zero/low energy, and immense connected devices is expected to enhance the connectivity, sustainability, and trustworthiness and provide some new services, such as truly immersive “extended reality” (XR), high-fidelity mobile hologram, and a new generation of entertainment. Sixth generation and its vision are still under research and open for developers and researchers to establish and develop their directions to realize future 6G technology, which is expected to be ready as early as 2028. This paper reviews 6G mobile technology, including its vision, requirements, enabling technologies, and challenges. Meanwhile, a total of 11 communication technologies, including terahertz (THz) communication, visible light communication (VLC), multiple access, coding, cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) zero-energy interface, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), and infusion of AI/machine learning (ML) in wireless transmission techniques, are presented. Moreover, this paper compares 5G and 6G in terms of services, key technologies, and enabling communications techniques. Finally, it discusses the crucial future directions and technology developments in 6G.

Abstract:Next-generation of the cellular network will attempt to overcome the limitations of the current Fifth Generation (5G) networks and equip itself to address the challenges which become obvious in the future. Currently, academia and industry have focused their attention on the Sixth Generation (6G) network, which is anticipated to be the next big game-changer in the telecom industry. The outbreak of COVID'19 has made the whole world to opt for virtual meetings, live video interactions ranging from healthcare, business to education. However, we miss an immersive experience due to the lack of supporting technology. Experts have anticipated that starting from the post-pandemic age, the performance requirements of technology for virtual and real-time communication, the rise of several verticals such as industrial automation, robotics, and autonomous driving will increase tremendously, and will skyrocket during the next decade. In this manuscript, we study the latest perspectives and future megatrends that are most likely to drive 6G. Initially, we describe the instances that lead us to the vision of 6G. Later, we narrate some of the use cases and the KPIs essential to meet their performance requirement. Further, we highlight the key requirements of 6G based on contemporary research such as UN sustainability goals, business model, edge intelligence, digital divide, and the trends in machine learning for 6G.

Abstract:Industry 4.0 relies heavily on artificial-intelligence(AI) and cloud-computing(CC), both of which have been greatly aided by the 5th-generation mobile-network (5G). The arrival of 5G, however, is seen as a watershed moment that will radically alter the current global trends in wireless communication practices and the lives of the masses. 5G envisions a future where the digital and physical worlds merge. The 6th-generation (6G) wireless communication network will likely unite terrestrial, aerial, and maritime communications into a single, unified system that is both more stable and faster, and can accommodate a far larger number of devices with ultra-low latency needs. This research hopes to foresee a scenario in which 6G supersedes 5G as the dominant standard for wireless communication in the years to come. Several advances have been made, but the utopian period of instantaneous global communication, instantaneous global computation, and no latency has not yet arrived. This essay investigates the most significant obstacles and difficulties that the transition from 5G to 6G may encounter on the way to realizing these loftier goals. The vital goal of "technology for humanity" is to improve service to the world's most disadvantaged people, and this article lays out a plan for 6G that includes the enabling technology infrastructures, obstacles, and research directions that will get us there.

Abstract:As of today, the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication system has been rolled out in many countries and the number of 5G subscribers already reaches a very large scale. It is time for academia and industry to shift their attention towards the next generation. At this crossroad, an overview of the current state of the art and a vision of future communications are definitely of interest. This article thus aims to provide a comprehensive survey to draw a picture of the sixth generation (6G) system in terms of drivers, use cases, usage scenarios, requirements, key performance indicators (KPIs), and enabling technologies. First, we attempt to answer the question of “Is there any need for 6G?” by shedding light on the key driving factors of 6G, in which we predict the explosive growth of mobile traffic until 2030, and envision potential use cases and usage scenarios. Second, the technical requirements of 6G are discussed and compared with those of 5G with respect to a set of KPIs in a quantitative manner. Third, the state-of-the-art 6G research efforts and activities from representative institutions and countries are summarized, and a tentative roadmap of definition, specification, standardization, and regulation is projected. Then, we identify a dozen of potential technologies and introduce their principles, advantages, challenges, and open research issues. Finally, the conclusions are drawn to paint a picture of “What 6G may look like?”. This survey is intended to serve as an enlightening guideline to spur interests and further investigations for subsequent research and development of 6G communications systems.
