Abstract:We study the directional far-field response of a spherical nanoantenna via engineering the plasmonic nanosphere's distance, size, and material. A unified pattern synthesis approach based on the T-matrix method and the particle swarm optimization is proposed for the directional beamforming of the nanoantenna. The angular response of the directional nanoantenna is very sensitive to the material change but is immunized to the random error of the spatial position of each particle. The physical origin of the high directionality is attributed to the coherent near-field distribution with large correlation length. This work provides the fundamental theory and physics for future nanoantenna design.

Abstract:This paper presents an analytic formulation of the near- and far-field distributions due to periodic spherical arrays of dipole antennas on two spherical biisotropic substrates, i.e., on the chiral sphere and on a perfectly conducting sphere coated with one-layer chiral medium, respectively. For an arbitrary orientation of the dipole antenna array, the dyadic Green's functions in the form of an eigenfunction expansion in terms of the normalized spherical vector wave functions are directly employed. Thereby, exact representations of the radiated fields in both near and far zones are obtained in closed form. They are all in a superposition of right- and left-handed circularly polarized waves, and are also applicable for the cases of spherical arrays of dipole antennas on spherical isotropic substrates. Furthermore, the constitutive parameter effects of the chiral medium on the three-dimensional patterns of the far-zone field and its polarized feature are demonstrated numerically.
Comprehensive Surface-Wave Description for the Nano-scale Energy Concentration with Resonant Dipole Antennas

Abstract:Resonant optical dipole nano-antennas allow giant field enhancement within nano-gaps. To show how the energy of external illumination waves is delivered and concentrated in nano-gaps, we build up a model by considering the dynamical launching and multiple scattering processes of surface plasmon polaritions (SPPs) on both antenna arms. The model captures the main feature of the antenna resonance as evidenced by comparison of the model prediction with fully vectorial numerical results and provides an intuitive picture that the energy of external wave is initially transferred into SPP and is then coupled into the nano-gap. The enhanced field in the nano-gap oscillates quasi-periodically with the increase of the antenna-arm length, and the resonance peaks can be predicted with a phase-matching condition derived from the model, showing that antenna resonance is due to a constructive interference of the multiple-scattered SPPs. Analytical equation for determining the complex resonance wavelength and the quality factor of the resonant modes is obtained. The model however exhibits observable deviation from fully vectorial numerical results for the lowest resonance order (for antenna with the shortest arms), evidencing that, for this case, surface waves other than SPPs contribute to the antenna resonance. The present results are helpful for clarifying the underlying physics for the energy concentration with resonant dipole antennas and may provide recipes for intuitive design of antenna devices, such as those used for optical nonlinearity enhancement and biochemical sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate near field enhancement generation in silver nanoantenna-superlens systems via numerical modeling. Using near-field interference and global optimization algorithms, we can design nanoantenna-superlens systems with mismatched permittivities, whose performance can match those with matched permittivities. The systems studied here may find broad applications in the fields of sensing, such as field-enhanced fluorescence and surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and the methodology used here can be applied to the designing and optimization of other devices, such as two-dimensional near field focusing lens.
Strong Field Enhancement and Unidirectional Scattering Based on Asymmetric Nanoantenna

Abstract:Dielectric-metal nanostructures have lately emerged as one of the most promising approaches to modulating light at the optical frequency. Their remarkable electric and magnetic resonances give them a one-of-a-kind ability to augment local field enhancements with negligible absorption losses. Here, we propose a hybrid metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) nanoantenna that contains a dimer of three-layers of shell nanoparticles. In addition, we only theoretically and numerically show the optical properties of the hybrid dimer nanoantenna. We found that the nanoantenna sustained unidirectional forward scattering with narrow beamwidth (30.9 deg) and strong scattering intensity (up to 5 times larger than the single MDM particle). Furthermore, when the hybrid asymmetric dimer was excited by the plane wave with different electric polarization directions, our findings revealed that the hybrid nanoantenna boosted the gap’s electric near-field while also supporting unidirectional forward scattering. Finally, we analyzed the hybrid dimer with substrates of different materials. It supported strong electric high-order moments along the z-axis and x-axis in gaps between MDM nanoparticles and between MDM nanoparticles and the Ge substrate, owing to the intense displacement currents inside of the dielectric layer. We found that the local electric field of this MDM hybrid dimer nanoantenna with Ge substrate was well improved and attained 3325 v/m.

Significant loss suppression and large induced chirality via cooperative near- and far-field coupling in plasmonic dimer nanoantennas

Abstract:Plasmonic nanoantennas containing nano-gaps support "hotspots" for greatly enhanced light-matter interactions, but suffer from inherent high losses, a long-standing issue that hinders practical applications. Here we report a strategy to significantly suppress the losses of plasmonic dimer nanoantennas. Specifically, by introducing the concept of cooperative near- and far-field coupling, we observed an unprecedented transition from the weak coupling of localized resonances to strong coupling of collective (nonlocal) resonances, showing robustness to the gap distance between the dimer. We develop a generalized lattice sum approximation model to describe this transition and reveal its origins: the off-diagonal element of the anisotropic polarizability tensor due to near-field coupling, and the anisotropic lattice sums due to far-field coupling. This strong coupling leads to loss-suppressed plasmonic resonances with large modulation depths and meanwhile extremely high measured quality factors up to 3120 in the near-infrared regime, exceeding the record in the near infrared regime. Additionally, high-$Q$ and large chiroptical responses can also be induced for achiral planar dimers under the critical coupling condition. This work paves an avenue toward extremely low-loss plasmonic devices, either chiral or not, for diverse important applications.

Abstract:The finite-difference time-domain method is used to calculate the electronic field distribution and enhancement factor of nano-scale optical antennas for different shape, length and substrates. When the resonant wavelength is 915 nm, the antenna with symmetry echelon dipoles has an enhancement factor of 1739, which is greater than the enhancement factor of 1076 of the antenna with symmetry rectangle dipoles. The resonant wavelength has a blue-shift when the length of the antenna is decreased. With a glass substrate, the resonant peak of the antenna with a length of the dipole of 80 nm red-shifts from 587 nm to 715 nm and the electric field distribution inclines to the substrate.

Abstract:Strong electromagnetic field confinement and enhancement can be readily achieved in plasmonic nanoantennas, however, this is considerably more difficult to realize over large areas, which is essential for many applications. Here, dispersion engineering in plasmonic metamaterials is applied to successfully develop and demonstrate a coupled array of plasmonic-dielectric nanoantennas offering an ultrahigh density of electromagnetic hot spots (10(11) cm(-2)) over macroscopic, centimeter scale areas. The hetero-metamaterial is formed by a highly ordered array of vertically standing plasmonic dipolar antennas with a ZnO gap and fabricated using a scalable electrodeposition technique. It supports a complex modal structure, including guided, surface and gap modes, which offers rich opportunities, frequently beyond the local effective medium theory, with optical properties that can be easily controlled and defined at the fabrication stage. This metamaterial platform can be used in a wide variety of applications, including hot-electron generation, nanoscale light sources, sensors, as well as nonlinear and memristive devices.

Abstract:AbstractThe radiation of an electric dipole emitter can be drastically enhanced if the emitter is placed in the nano-gap of a metallic dipole antenna. By assuming that only surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are excited on the antenna, we build up an intuitive pure-SPP model that is able to comprehensively predict the electromagnetic features of the antenna radiation, such as the total or radiative emission rate and the far-field radiation pattern. With the model we can distinguish the respective contributions from SPPs and from other surface waves to the antenna radiation. It is found that for antennas with long arms that support higher-order resonances, SPPs provide a dominant contribution to the antenna radiation, while for other cases, the contribution of surface waves other than SPPs should be considered. The model reveals an intuitive picture that the enhancement of the antenna radiation is due to surface waves that are resonantly excited on the two antenna arms and that are further coupled into the nano-gap or scattered into free space. From the model we can derive a phase-matching condition that predicts the antenna resonance and the resultant enhanced radiation. The model is helpful for a physical understanding and intuitive design of antenna devices.

Abstract:Controlling directionality of optical emitters is of utmost importance for their application in communication and biosensing devices. Metallic nanoantennas have been proven to affect both excitation and emission properties of nearby emitters, including directionality of their emission. In this regard, optical directional nanoantennas based on a Yagi-Uda design have been demonstrated in the visible range. Despite this impressive proof of concept, their overall size and considerable number of elements represent obstacles for the exploitation of these antennas in nanophotonic applications and for their incorporation onto photonic chips. In order to address these challenges, we investigate an alternative design. In particular, we numerically demonstrate unidirectionality of an ultracompact optical antenna based on two parallel gold nanorods (side-by-side dimer). Our results show that exciting the antiphase mode by an emitter placed in the near-field can lead to unidirectional emission. Furthermore, in order to verify the feasibility of this design, we study the effect on the directionality of several parameters such as shape of the nanorods, possible defects in dimer assembly, and different position and orientation of the emitter. We conclude that this design is robust to changes, making it experimentally achievable.

Abstract:Illuminated gapped-gold-nanorod dimers hold surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that can be engineered, by an appropriate choice of geometrical parameters, to enhance the electromagnetic field at the gap, allowing applications in molecular detection via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Envisioning hybrid devices in which the SERS spectroscopy of molecules in the gap is complemented by electrical measurements, it arises the question of designing efficient geometries to contact the nanorods without decreasing the enhancement factor (EF) of the nanoantenna, i.e., the figure of merit for SERS spectroscopy. Within this framework we theoretically study the feasibility to fabricate designs based on covering with gold the far-from-the-gap areas of the dimer. We show that by tuning the geometrical parameters of the designs these systems can reach enhancement factors larger than the best achieved in the uncovered dimer: this supremacy survives even in the presence of dimer asymmetries and vacancies at the interfaces between the nanorods and the covering layers. Our results show that geometrical modifications away from the gap can improve the optical response at the gap, thus enabling the use of these devices both for hybrid and optical applications.

Abstract:The design of many promising, newly emerging classes of photonic metamaterials and subwavelength confinement structures requires detailed knowledge and understanding of the electromagnetic near-field interactions between their building blocks. While the electric field distributions and, respectively, the electric interactions of different nanostructures can be routinely measured, for example, by scattering near-field microscopy, only recently experimental methods for imaging the magnetic field distributions became available. In this paper, we provide direct experimental maps of the lateral magnetic near-field distributions of variously shaped plasmonic nanoantennas by using hollow-pyramid aperture scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). We study both simple plasmonic nanoresonators, such as bars, disks, rings and more complex antennas. For the studied structures, the magnetic near-field distributions of the complex resonators have been found to be a superposition of the magnetic near-fields of the individual constituting elements. These experimental results, explained and validated by numerical simulations, open new possibilities for engineering and characterization of complex plasmonic antennas with increased functionality.
Long-Range Dipole-Dipole Interactions Enabled with Guided Plasmons of Matched Nanoparticle-on-Mirror Antenna Pairs

Abstract:Ruling a wide range of phenomena, dipole-dipole interactions (DDI) are typically constrained to the short range due to their rapid decay with the increasing dipole separations, limiting the performance in long-range applications. By judiciously designing the photonic structures that control the two-point Green's functions of the electromagnetic environment, the spontaneous emission of quantum emitters (luminescence) and their interactions (e.g., Förster energy transfer) can be conveniently tuned. In this paper, we designed a matched nanoparticle-on-mirror antenna pair with enhanced DDI guided by surface plasmon polaritons confined to the metal substrate, which ensures concentrated and enhanced interaction over long ranges of tens of wavelengths. The long-range ($\sim 10 \lambda$) DDI between donor-acceptor emitters is enhanced by $6\times 10^{3}$ times respective to bare gold film, and $4.4\times 10^{4}$ times respective to vacuum. Our result provides a promising testbed for investigating long-range DDI phenomena on the nanoscale.

Abstract:Hybrid mesoscale-structures that can combine dielectric optical resonances with plasmon-polaritons are of interest in chip-scale nano-optical communication and sensing. This experimental study shows how a fluorescent microsphere coupled to a silver nanowire can act as a remotely-excited optical antenna. To realize this architecture, self-assembly methodology is used to couple a fluorescent silica microsphere to a single silver nanowire. By exciting propagating surface plasmon polaritons at one end of the nanowire, remote excitation of the Stokes-shifted whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of the microsphere is achieved. The WGM-mediated fluorescence emission from the system is studied using Fourier plane optical microscopy, and the polar and azimuthal emission angles of the antenna are quantified. Interestingly, the thickness of the silver nanowires is shown to have direct ramifications on the angular emission pattern, thus providing a design parameter to tune antenna characteristics. Furthermore, by employing three-dimensional numerical simulations, electric near-fields of the gap-junction between the microsphere and the nanowire is mapped, and the modes of nanowire that couple to the microsphere is identified. This work provides a self-assembled optical antenna that combines dielectric optical resonances with propagating-plasmons and can be harnessed in hybrid nonlinear-nanophotonics and single-molecule remote sensing.

Abstract:In the field of plasmonics, the nanogap effect is often related to one aspect like the near-field enhancement at a single excitation wavelength or the far-field resonance shift. In this study, taking full advantage of finite element method (FEM) calculations, we present a comprehensive and quantitative analysis of the nanogap effect on the plasmonic behaviors of metallic nanoparticle dimers. Firstly, near-field spectroscopy is proposed in order to extract the near-field resonance wavelengths. Focusing on the bonding dipole mode, it is found that the near-field enhancement factors exhibit a weak power-law dependence on the gap size, while the near-field resonance shift decays nearly exponentially as the gap size increases, with a lower decay length than that for the far-field resonance shift. The spectral deviation between these two shifts is suggested to be taken into account for spectroscopy applications of plasmonic devices, although it may be negligible for dimer structures with rather small gaps.
Design of Resonant Optical Nano-Antenna for 1.55&#181;m Wavelength

Abstract:This paper is on the exploration of near infrared band optical nano-antenna design with the adoption of finite difference time domain method. The design result of 1.55μm optical antenna and its performance are presented. The optimal parameters are: the antenna arm L=330nm, the feedback gap D=20nm, the antenna arm thickness H=20nm, the antenna arm width W=60nm. This antenna can realize enhancement of field intensity about 2000 times for 1.55μm which indicates excellent near field enhancement effects. When wave with incidence angle less than 40°, feedback gap field intensity can be kept to be above 70% of the peak value, the antenna has well directional characteristics.

Abstract:We propose and justify by the finite-difference time-domain method an efficient strategy to enhance the spontaneous emission of a fluorophore with a multi-resonance plasmonic antenna. The custom-designed asymmetrical antenna consists of two plasmonic nanoparticles with different sizes and is able to couple efficiently to free space light through multiple localized surface plasmon resonances. This design simultaneously permits a large near-field excitation near the antenna as well as a high quantum efficiency, which results in an unusual and significant enhancement of the fluorescence of a single emitter. Such an asymmetrical antenna presents intrinsic advantages over single particle or dimer based antennas made using two identical nanostructures. This promising concept can be exploited in the large domain of light-matter interaction processes involving multiple frequencies.
Formation of Enhanced Uniform Chiral Fields in Symmetric Dimer Nanostructures

Abstract:Chiral fields with large optical chirality are very important in chiral molecules analysis, sensing and other measurements. Plasmonic nanostructures have been proposed to realize such super chiral fields for enhancing weak chiral signals. However, most of them cannot provide uniform chiral near-fields close to the structures, which makes these nanostructures not so efficient for applications. Plasmonic helical nanostructures and blocked squares have been proved to provide uniform chiral near-fields, but structure fabrication is a challenge. In this paper, we show that very simple plasmonic dimer structures can provide uniform chiral fields in the gaps with large enhancement of both near electric fields and chiral fields under linearly polarized light illumination with polarization off the dimer axis at dipole resonance. An analytical dipole model is utilized to explain this behavior theoretically. 30 times of volume averaged chiral field enhancement is gotten in the whole gap. Chiral fields with opposite handedness can be obtained simply by changing the polarization to the other side of the dimer axis. It is especially useful in Raman optical activity measurement and chiral sensing of small quantity of chiral molecule.

Chiral and directional optical emission from a dipole source coupled to a helical plasmonic antenna

Abstract:Plasmonic antennas with helical geometry are capable transducers between linearly polarized dipole emission and purely circular polarized far-fields. Besides large Purcell enhancements they possess a wide tunability due to the geometry dependence of their resonant modes. Here, the coupling of a dipole emitter embedded in a thin film to plasmonic single and double helices is numerically studied. Using a higher-order finite element method (FEM) the wavelength dependent Purcell enhancement of a dipole with different positions and orientations is calculated and the far-fields with respect to their chirality and radiation patterns are analyzed. Both single and double helices demonstrate highly directional and circularly polarized far-fields for resonant excitation but with significantly improved directional radiation for the case of double helices.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a new method to excite nano-dipole antenna using a subwavelength laser. A realistic nano-dipole with spherical tips was designed with a 2nm gap and 10nm radius and then excited by a subwavelength laser with a wavelength of 800nm and a spot radius of 200nm. The electric field at the center of the gap has been recorded for different arm length values. The study shows that the nano-dipole exhibits some resonances at specific values of arm length.
