Abstract:Supercontinuum generation (SCG) using a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser as a pump source and a nanofiber as a nonlinear element is investigated by numerical modeling. Many parameters are taken into account involving input pulse duration, peak power and diameter of the nanofiber. The results show that the narrower the input pulse is, the easier the SCG could be observed. The relation between the spectrum broadening and the diameter of nanofiber is not a direct proportion. According to our simulation, the dimension of the nanofiber plays an important role in effecting the dispersion and then the generation of supercontinuum.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical reflection spectroscopies for surface studies often suffer from their relatively weak signals. To enhance the signal strength, femtosecond input pulses are generally preferred, but their intensity is usually limited by supercontinuum (SC) generation in a bulk medium. We show here that the problem can be largely resolved by means of spatiotemporal focusing (STF) of the input that effectively suppresses the SC, permits much higher input intensity on a medium, and greatly enhances the nonlinear output signal. We use second-harmonic generation (SHG) on oxide as examples and demonstrate that, with STF, the input intensity for the onset of the SC can be increased by ∼30 times in comparison with conventional focusing, and the reflected SHG can be increased by about three orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation incorporates many nonlinear effects. In our experiment, two supercontinuum pulses generated independently by ultrashort pulses form stable spatial interference fringes and a frequency comb appears with collinear time-delay pump pulses. The supercontinuum keeps phase-lock relationships of the pump beams. Small intensity variations in the pump and small inhomogeneities in the material do not lead to dramatic phase fluctuations in the generated supercontinuum. It is important for supercontinuum simulation and studying of supercontinuum frequency combs in bulk material.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation (SCG) in integrated photonic waveguides is a versatile source of broadband light, and the generated spectrum is largely determined by the phase-matching conditions. Here we show that quasi-phase-matching via periodic modulations of the waveguide structure provides a useful mechanism to control the evolution of ultrafast pulses during supercontinuum generation. We experimentally demonstrate a quasi-phase-matched supercontinuum to the TE 20 and TE 00 waveguide modes, which enhances the intensity of the SCG in specific spectral regions by as much as 20 dB. We utilize higher-order quasi-phase-matching (up to the 16th order) to enhance the intensity in numerous locations across the spectrum. Quasi-phase-matching adds a unique dimension to the design space for SCG waveguides, allowing the spectrum to be engineered for specific applications.

Abstract:Superfocusing confines light within subwavelength structures, breaking the diffraction limit. Structures with spatial singularities, such as metallic cones, are crucial to enable nanoscale focusing, leading to significant advancements in nanophotonics, sensing, and imaging. Here, we exploit the spatiotemporal analogue of the wedge structure, i.e. a dielectric medium sandwiched between two subluminal interfaces with distinct velocities, to focus propagating waves beyond the diffraction limit, achieving spatiotemporal superfocusing. Within this structure, an incident pulse undergoes continuous spatial and temporal compression due to Doppler effects, which accumulates and results in an extreme focusing as it approaches the spatiotemporal vertex. Remarkably, unlike the field localization in conventional superfocusing, the compressed light in spatiotemporal wedges experiences significant amplification and then couple to the far field in free space. Our findings represent an indispensable paradigm for extreme concentration and amplification of propagating waves in space-time dimensions.

Abstract:Methods for solving the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation (GNLSE) with adaptive step-size methods including the local error method (LEM) and conservation quantity error method (CQEM) are described. Supercontinuum generation (SCG) in liquid-core photonic crystal fibers (PCF) is numerically simulated by using LEM and CQEM in the time domain and frequency domain (FD) respectively. According to the numerical simulation results, the advantages and disadvantages of different adaptive step-size methods are compared, and the influence of different adaptive step-size methods on the coherence of SC is analyzed. A supercontinuum (SC) spectrum spanning from approximately 1300–2800 nm with high-coherence properties is numerically generated in the 5 cm fiber with 50 fs and 1000 W pump pulses at 1.55 μm. The numerical results demonstrate that the performance of the SC generated in FD is also better because the nonlinear operator is more effective in FD. In addition, the pulse evolution process based on LEM is smoother and the coherence is better due to its higher number of iterations and accuracy, so it is adapted to accurately modeling the SCG in PCF. However, the CQEM is more computationally efficient and can minimize the computational effort, so it is suitable for the fast modeling of SCG in PCF. This numerical study helps to optimize the numerical process of SCG and find a new way for the generation of highly coherent SC.

Abstract:Formating mechanism of supercontinuum generation in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber is studied. Using nonlinear polarization rotation technique, a stable femtosecond optical pulse with the central wavelength of 1556.0 nm as pumping source is obtained, and by delivering this pulse into a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, a supercontinuum with the 20 dB bandwith about the 140 nm has been obtained in experiment; Supercontinuum generation in different pump power was experimentally and numerically investigated. It is shown that supercontinuum has the different formatting mechanism with different pump power, and under various nonlinear effects, the more higher of the pump power; the more wide of the supercontinuum. It is found that qualitative agreement between the experiments and the simulations, the simulations shows that it exists an optimal fiber length for generation of the flat, broad supercontinuum. The SC band bandwidth will became smoother and broader by the frequency chirp.
Nanoimprinting and Tapering of Chalcogenide Photonic Crystal Fibers for Cascaded Supercontinuum Generation

Abstract:Improved long-wavelength transmission and supercontinuum (SC) generation is demonstrated by anti-reflective (AR) nanoimprinting and tapering of chalcogenide photonic crystal fibers (PCF). Using a SC source input spanning from 1-4.2 {\mu}m, the total transmission of a 15 {\mu}m core diameter PCF was improved from ~53 % to ~74 % by nanoimprinting of AR structures on both input- and output facets of the fiber. Through a combined effect of reduced reflection and red-shifting of the spectrum to 5 {\mu}m, the relative transmission of light >3.5 {\mu}m in the same fiber was increased by 60.2 %. Further extension of the spectrum to 8 {\mu}m was achieved using tapered fibers. The spectral broadening dynamics and output power was investigated using different taper parameters and pulse repetition rates.

Abstract:Very first time, we experimentally demonstrated the generation of supercontinuum (SC) comb by pumping a tunable soliton molecule fiber laser output signal into a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). SC signals with different comb-teeth structures were obtained by controlling the pump power and waveplate orientation of the polarization-maintained soliton molecule fiber laser. The maximum achieved output powers of dual SC combs from two ports were 21.95 (output 1) and 3.75 mW (output 2), respectively. The spectral and temporal profiles of the SC comb were compared with the simulation results and the first-order coherence was evaluated. Our experiment provides a novel technique for the generation of SC signal with various comb-teeth structures that can be utilized in broadband spectrometers and full-field 3D metrology.

Abstract:We experimentally and numerically study the supercontinuum (SC) generation with dense interference fringes by two-soliton bound state picosecond lasers based on the soliton fission and self-phase modulation. The simulations are consistent with the experimental results. The bandwidth, flatness and modulation depth of SC can be improved through detailed dispersion optimization. The simulation results suggest that the interference fringes depend on the two-soliton bound state and their modulation period can be adjusted by changing its pulse separation. We found that a smaller pulse duration helps to strengthen the modulation depth of SC. Increasing the pulse duration and amplifier gain will cause the deterioration of the modulation depth and coherence of SC, which indicates the necessity of reducing noise in the system. This work provides an interesting and novel method to study the mechanism of SC generation.

Abstract:Recent advances in supercontinuum light generation have been remarkable, particularly in the context of highly nonlinear photonic integrated waveguides. In this study, we thoroughly investigate supercontinuum (SC) generation in high-index doped silica glass integrated waveguides, exploring various femtosecond pumping wavelengths and input polarization states. We demonstrate broadband SC generation spanning from 700 nm to 2400 nm when pumping within the anomalous dispersion regime at 1200 nm, 1300 nm, and 1550 nm. In contrast, pumping within the normal dispersion regime at 1000 nm results in narrower SC spectra, primarily due to coherent nonlinear effects such as self-phase modulation and optical wave breaking. Additionally, we examine the impact of TE/TM polarization modes on SC generation, shedding light on the polarization-dependent characteristics of the broadening process. Moreover, Raman scattering measurements reveal the emergence of two new peaks at 48.8 THz and 75.1 THz in the Raman gain curve. Our experimental results are supported by numerical simulations based on a generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation that incorporates the new Raman gain contribution. Finally, relative intensity noise measurements conducted using the dispersive Fourier transform technique indicate excellent stability of the generated SC spectra.

Abstract:Recently, optimization techniques have had a significant impact in a variety of fields, leading to a higher signal-to-noise and more streamlined techniques. We consider the possibility for using programmable phase-only spatial optimization of the pump beam to influence the supercontinuum generation process. Preliminary results show that significant broadening and rough control of the supercontinuum spectrum in the visible region are possible without loss of input energy. This serves as a proof-of-concept demonstration that spatial effects can controllably influence the supercontinuum spectrum, leading to possibilities for utilizing supercontinuum power more efficiently and achieving excellent spectral control.

Abstract:The spatial and temporal coherence of the fluorescence emission controlled by a quasi-two-dimensional hybrid photonic-plasmonic crystal structure covered with a thin fluorescent-molecular-doped dielectric film is investigated experimentally. A simple theoretical model to describe how a confined quasi-two-dimensional optical mode may induce coherent fluorescence emission is also presented. Concerning the spatial coherence, it is experimentally observed that the coherence area in the plane of the light source is in excess of 49 mu m(2), which results in enhanced directional fluorescence emission. Concerning temporal coherence, the obtained coherence time is 4 times longer than that of the normal fluorescence emission in vacuum. Moreover, a Young's double-slit interference experiment is performed to directly confirm the spatially coherent emission. This smoking gun proof of spatial coherence is reported here for the first time for the optical-mode-modified emission.
Coherent Amplification of Continuous Laser Field via Superfluorescence

Abstract:Superfluorescence (SF) is collective spontaneous emission wherein radiators spontaneously synchronize, resulting in an intense single-pulse emission. The avalanche radiation of photons is initiated by the first photon emitted into the SF propagation mode. Because this process is stochastic, the absolute phase of the SF changes randomly from shot to shot. We demonstrate that this phase can be controlled by seeding the SF with a resonant continuous-wave (CW) laser. The seed light was weak enough not to cause the stimulated emission but strong enough to inject the first photon into the SF propagation mode prior to injection by the radiators themselves. Cross-correlation measurements between the seeded SF and CW laser revealed that the seed light was coherently amplified by the SF. The amplification factor for the instantaneous intensity was estimated to be 7 orders of magnitude. Abstract:Large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber is used to generate high power, high beam quality supercontinuum. Propagation and supercontinuum generation process of laser pulse in large-mode-area (LMA) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is simulated by solving the general nonlinear Schrödinger equation (GNLSE) using the split-step Fourier method. Effects of the pump pulse parameters (peak power and chirp) and the length of photonic crystal fiber used on supercontinuum generation are particularly estimated. Nonlinear spectral broadening mechanism of laser pulse in large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber is discussed. The results show that the process of supercontinuum generation can be divided into three stages: initial broadening, dramatic broadening and saturation broadening. The spectrum width and efficiency can be achieved by the optimized length of LMA PCF to insure output of the generated supercontinuum at the dramatic broadening stage. The pump peak power and chirp have important impact on supercontinuum generation. When a small peak power pump is input, the spectrum broadens symmetrically. When the pump peak power increases, it brings little changes with the shorter wavelength component but broader of the longer wavelength component. The time-domain shape of the pulse exhibits concussion modulation as the effect of pulse breakup. When the pump chirp is positive, little influence is shown, except a shift of longer wavelength power by increasing the chirp. But the full width of the supercontinuum has little changes. While the pump chirp is negative and satisfy certain condition, the nonlinear is enhanced to facilitate the supercontinuum generation.

Abstract:Coherent supercontinuum light expanding from 1.4 to 4 μm is generated in a 4 cm long tapered fluorotellurite microstructured fiber (MF) pumped by a 1980 nm femtosecond fiber laser. The spectral broadening in the tapered fluorotellurite MF is caused by self-phase modulation, the Raman soliton, and red-shifted dispersive wave generation. Our results show that tapered fluorotellurite MFs are promising nonlinear medium for generating coherent broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum light.

Abstract:Biophotonics and nonlinear fiber optics have traditionally been two independent fields. Since the discovery of fiber-based supercontinuum generation in 1999, biophotonics applications employing incoherent light have experienced a large impact from nonlinear fiber optics, primarily because of the access to a wide range of wavelengths and a uniform spatial profile afforded by fiber supercontinuum. However, biophotonics applications employing coherent light have not benefited from the most well-known techniques of supercontinuum generation for reasons such as poor coherence (or high noise), insufficient controllability, and inadequate portability. Fortunately, a few key techniques involving nonlinear fiber optics and femtosecond laser development have emerged to overcome these critical limitations. Despite their relative independence, these techniques are the focus of this review, because they can be integrated into a low-cost portable biophotonics source platform. This platform can be shared across many different areas of research in biophotonics, enabling new applications such as point-of-care coherent optical biomedical imaging.

Abstract:We shape the spectrum of an octave spanning supercontinuum from an erbium fiber laser. The group delay dispersion is controlled through the temperature profile of a chirped fiber Bragg grating. We demonstrate control of spectral broadening, switching in spectral windows, and optimizing power at six wavelengths corresponding to Yb, Ca, and Sr clock transitions, an f-2f pair, and a C-band reference for frequency transfer applications. We verify locking of the shaped f-2f beat note, and the coherence of the shaped supercontinuum by interference with an unshaped supercontinuum branch with relative frequency deviation of 10-17 at 1 s averaging time.

Abstract:We demonstrate that by using a cascaded configuration of five solid-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) samples with progressively decreasing core diameters, ultraviolet light with wavelengths as short as ∼300 nm can be generated in a supercontinuum (SC) set-up. With a nanosecond laser as the pump light, the modulation instability effect leads to the generation of multiple optical solitons in the first PCF sample which has a close-to-zero dispersion value at the pump wavelength (∼1064 nm). The following PCF samples with decreasing core diameters enhance the waveguide nonlinearity, and at the same time provide continuously-shorter phase-matching wavelengths for dispersive-wave emission, thereby pushing the short-wavelength edge of the SC spectrum into the deep ultraviolet spectral region. While the PCF splicing technique ensures the compactness of this SC set-up, the generated SC spectrum, spanning ∼350 nm to ∼2000 nm with a flat spectral profile, may be applied in fluorescence microscopy and biochemical imaging.
