Abstract:Integral equation method is applied to analyze the Purcell effect in plasmonic system in this paper. By applying the Fermi's golden rule, the Purcell effect of a quantum emitter can be calculated from the local density of states (LDOS), which can be further expressed by the imaginary part of the Green's function of the whole system. To obtain this Green's function numerically, the layered medium Green's function is utilized to simplify the modeling of planarly layered substrate, where the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be sustained. The metallic nano scatterers are introduced to excite the localized surface plasmons (LSP), and the effect of both is obtained by solving the corresponding integral equation. Numerical results are shown at the end of this paper.

Abstract:The superior ability of plasmonic structures to manipulate light has propelled their extensive applications in nanophotonics techniques and devices. Computational electromagnetics plays a critical role in characterizing and optimizing the nanometallic structures. In this paper, a general numerical algorithm, which is different from the commonly used discrete dipole approximation, the finite-difference time-domain, and the surface integral equation (SIE) method, is proposed to model plasmonic nanostructures. In this algorithm, the generalized impedance boundary condition (GIBC) based on the finite element method (FEM) is formulated and converted to the SIE. The plasmonic nanostructures with arbitrary inhomogeneity and shapes are modeled by the FEM. Their complex electromagnetic interactions are accurately described by the SIE method. As a result, the near field of plasmonic nanostructures can be accurately calculated. The higher order basis functions, together with the multifrontal massively parallel sparse direct solver, are involved to provide a higher order accurate and fast solver.

Abstract:A rigorous surface integral equation approach is proposed to study the spontaneous emission of a quantum emitter embedded in a multilayered plasmonic structure with the presence of arbitrarily shaped metallic nanoscatterers. With the aid of the Fermi's golden rule, the spontaneous emission of the emitter can be calculated from the local density of states, which can be further expressed by the imaginary part of the dyadic Green's function of the whole electromagnetic system. To obtain this Green's function numerically, a surface integral equation is established taking into account the scattering from the metallic nanoscatterers. Particularly, the modeling of the planar multilayered structure is simplified by applying the layered medium Green's function to reduce the computational domain and hence the memory requirement. Regarding the evaluation of Sommerfeld integrals in the layered medium Green's function, the discrete complex image method is adopted to accelerate the evaluation process. This work offers an accurate and efficient simulation tool for analyzing complex multilayered plasmonic system, which is commonly encountered in the design of optical elements and devices.

Abstract:An experimentally feasible configuration of a prism coupler with an electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) medium layer, e.g., a semiconductor-quantum-dot (SQD) medium, deposited upon its prism base is suggested for generating tunable surface-plasmon-polariton resonance. Such surface-plasmon-polariton resonance and optical excitation of a surface plasmon wave can be manipulated by switchable quantum interference among SQD multilevel transitions driven by two external control fields. When an incident probe field is coupled into a surface plasmon wave excitation mode, the surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) resonance at the interface between the SQD medium layer and the substrate will arise, and the quantum-coherently controllable reflection spectrum of the probe field on the prism base can be achieved. In this process, destructive and constructive quantum interference (determined by the intensity ratio of the two external control fields) in the SQD multilevel system plays a key role for achieving the tunable reflection spectrum. The EIT-based surface-plasmon-polariton resonance presented here will have three characteristics (some of them would be attractive): (i) switchable quantum interference exhibited by surface plasmon wave excitation, (ii) quantum-coherently controllable surface plasmon polaritons by external optical fields, (iii) surface wave sensitive to dispersion of the SQD quantum coherent medium. Such an effect of controllable optical response based on the quantum-interference switchable surface-plasmon-polariton resonance in the EIT-prism coupler may find some potential applications in design of new photonic and quantum optical devices.

Abstract:Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides with subwavelength apertures exhibit unique properties that are considered breakthroughs in surface plasma technology. In this paper, we established a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode of MIM structure as well as a theoretical model of reflectivity and excitation coefficients to clarify the SPP mode structure. During simulation calculations, attenuation of the TM ground state mode with large-thickness dielectrics is over the oscillation mode, which is obviously different from the traditional dielectric waveguide. The TE mode exhibits characteristics of anamorphic dielectric optical waveguides, and its propagation distance is longer than that of the TM0 mode. With increasing length, the cavity quality factor Q increases, which indicates that the SPP reflection is limited. The quality factor of the cavity and the end-face have a close relationship. MIM waveguides with larger Q values can produce optical waves coupled with the SPP mode. In this paper, we analyzed SPP propagation constants and attenuation coefficients to promote the development of an integrated surface plasmon.
Controlling the surface plasmon excitation efficiency using dielectric magneto-optical cavity

Abstract:The diffraction of a plane wave by a magneto-optical cavity located on a metal interface is investigated theoretically. We show that the excitation of localized eigenmodes of the cavity allows one to efficiently excite the surface plasmon polariton (SPP). We exploit the polarization and symmetry properties of the cavity modes to propose an efficient approach for controlling the SPP intensity through an external magnetic field. The presented theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the rigorous computations based on the generalized Lorentz reciprocity theorem and aperiodic Fourier modal method. The magnetization-induced relative intensity variation of the excited SPP demonstrated in numerical computations varies from a few percent to 100% depending on the polarization of the incident wave. Such large modulation opens new possibilities for efficient SPP modulation with considered magneto-optical intensity effect.

Abstract:We study the generation of surface plasmon polariton and its extraction efficiency from a microdisk-based plasmonic source to a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide. The field distribution is no longer a whispering gallery mode commonly found in microdisk lasers but hybridized with surface plasmon polariton. We observe the steady-state intensity of the surface plasmon polariton mode inside the plasmonic microdisk structure at 1.47- μm wavelength. This field intensity is extracted efficiently to a MIM plasmonic waveguide through a nanometer gap. The extraction efficiency reaches 60%.

Abstract:This paper investigates the interactions between incident electromagnetic wave and nanoparticles, especially metallic nanoparticles. The scattering of nanoparticles is characterized by using volume integral equation. By considering the total electric field, i.e. the sum of incident fields and the radiated fields by equivalent electric volume currents, the volume integral equation can be established within the scatterers. The resultant volume integral equation is discretized using appropriate basis functions and is solved numerically using a matrix solver. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the application of volume integral equation to analyze the plasmon resonance.
Designing surface plasmon resonance of subwavelength hole arrays by studying absorption

Abstract:The surface plasmon (SP) resonance excited at subwavelength cylindrical hole arrays milled in metal films is systematically studied by solving the three-dimensional Maxwell's equations using the finite element method. The absorption spectrum of the hole arrays, combined with the electric-field distribution, is employed to investigate the plasmon resonance of the patterned metal film. It is found that (i) an SP resonance correlates to a resonant peak in the absorption spectrum, but not all the peaks in the spectrum correlates to the plasmon resonances; (ii) the size variation of the hole array will shift the resonant wavelength, i. e., an increment of 100 nm in the pitch p, the hole diameter d, and the hole depth t leads to a redshift of 60-70, 30-40, or 10-20 nm in the resonant wavelength, respectively; (iii) the maximum enhancement of the electric field on the surface of the metal film corresponds to the highest absorption peak, which can be achieved by designing the p, d, and t of the hole array; and (iv) for small holes (e.g., d = 125 nm) or shallow holes (e. g., t = 100 nm), the absorption characteristics of the hole arrays are particularly important as some resonant peaks are missing in their transmission spectra. Abstract:We theoretically study the coupling of magnetic plasmon polaritons (MPPs) with propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a system composed of an array of metal nanowires close to a metal film with a dielectric spacer. Strong coupling between MPPs and SPPs is observed, manifested by the anticrossing behavior of the resonant positions in the reflection spectra. It creates narrow-band hybridized MPPs with Rabi-type splitting as large as 250 meV. Moreover, we also found that the coupling between the MPPs and the SPPs can be tailored by the period of the metal nanowire array to affect the magnetic response of the plasmonic structure. Above the resonant wavelength of the MPPs, coupling between two kinds of resonance modes can lead to a 20-fold enhancement of the magnetic fields in the dielectric spacer, as compared with the pure magnetic resonance upon the excitation of the hybridized MPPs, whereas below it, coupling cannot lead to a magnetic field enhancement. We suggest that this feature could offer a feasible way to achieve huge magnetic field enhancement at optical frequencies and hold promising potential applications in magnetic nonlinearity and sensors.

Abstract:The main technological obstacle hampering the dissemination of modern optoelectronic devices operating with large light-matter coupling strength Ω is an in-depth comprehension of the carrier current extraction and injection from and into strongly coupled light-matter states, the so-called polaritonic states. The main challenge lies in modeling the interaction between excitations of a different nature, namely bosonic excitations [the plasmonic intersubband (ISB) excitations] with fermionic excitations (the electrons within the extraction or injection subband). In this work, we introduce a comprehensive quantum framework that encompasses both the ISB plasmonic mode and the extractor and injector mode, with a specific emphasis on accurately describing the coherent nature of transport. This reveals inherent selection rules dictating the interaction between the ISB plasmon and the extraction and injection subband. To incorporate the dynamics of the system, this framework is combined to a density-matrix model and a quantum master equation, which have the key property to distinguish intra- and intersubband mechanisms. These theoretical developments are confronted to experimental photocurrent measurements from midinfrared quantum cascade detectors ( λ=10μm ) embedded in metal-semiconductor-metal microcavities, operating at the onset of the strong light-matter coupling regime ( 2Ω=9.3meV ). We are able to reproduce the different features of the photocurrent spectra, notably the relative amplitude evolution of the polaritonic peaks with respect to the voltage bias applied to the structure. Complex natural resonances of conducting planar objects buried in a dielectric half-space

Abstract:A scheme is presented to incorporate a mixed potential integral equation (MPIE) using Michalski's “formulation C” with the method of moments (MoM) for analyzing the scattering of a plane wave from conducting planar objects buried in a dielectric half-space. The robust complex image method with a two-level approximation is used for the calculation of the Green's functions for the half-space. To further speed up the computation, an interpolation technique for filling the matrix is employed. While the induced current distributions on the object's surface are obtained in the frequency domain, the corresponding time domain responses are calculated via the inverse fast Fourier transform (FFT). The complex natural resonances of targets are then extracted from the late time response using the generalized pencil-of-function (GPOF) method. The authors investigate the pole trajectories as they vary the distance between strips and the depth and orientation of single, buried strips. The variation from the pole position of a single strip in a homogeneous dielectric medium was only a few percent for most of these parameter variations

Polarization-Selective Collimation Effect with A Reflective Plasmonic Cavity

Abstract:We report that a metal-dielectric-metal cavity with a perforated top metallic film shows a remarkable polarization-selective collimation effect through reflection on the perforated film. According to simulations, such plasmonic cavities can achieve nearly perfect absorption (R < 1.5%) of a transverse magnetic (TM) wave at an optimized incident angle while nearly perfect reflection (R similar to 100%) at normal incidence. A very wide incident angle range (approximately 15 degrees-65 degrees) is found to exhibit a high absorption ratio exceeding over 70%. In contrast, for a transverse electric (TE) wave, the plasmonic cavities remain highly reflective (R similar to 100%) regardless of the incident angles. We elucidate that this polarization-and angle-dependent behavior arises from an even-order (N = 2) horizontal Fabry-Perot (FP) resonant mode inside the plasmonic cavity. This effect may find potential applications for angle filtering of polarized divergent light beams in optics.
Periodical Concentration of Surface Plasmon Polaritons by Wave Interference in Metallic Film with Nanocavity Array

Abstract:Metallic thin films with nanocavity arrays provide ideal platforms for plasmonics, non-linear optics, surface chemistry and corresponding applications. A general understanding of electromagnetic (EM) field distributions is needed for further creation, manipulation and designation of near-field enhancements. Herein, we study the distribution of plasmonic hot spots over Ag thin films with triangular nanocavities in hexagonal arrays with a variable of lattice parameters. We propose that the concentration and interference of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) dominates the distribution of plasmonic hot spots. The localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) at nanocavities excites SPPs to propagate on the thin film, whose concentration and interference lead to an extremely strong near field enhancement at the surface of the thin film, the location of which can also be termed as plasmonic hot spot. For this model, the calculation results of the physical formula are in excellent agreements with both the experimental results and the electrodynamic simulations with 3D finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the plasmonic hot spots distribute periodically within the nanocavity arrays, determined by the geometric symmetry of the array as well as with the polarization state of the incident field. The periodicity of plasmonic hot spots on flat surface illustrates a new way to concentrate SPPs in an extendable area, which has potential applications in localized non-linear optics, sensing, plasmonic logical circuit and optical computing.
Radiative energy transfer via surface plasmon polaritons around metal–insulator grating: For better understanding of magnetic polariton

Abstract:A conventional metal–insulator nanograting has the potential to transmit near-infrared thermal radiation because an electromagnetic wave is resonated in the grating structure. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) take place at the interface between the metal and the insulator with boundaries at both ends. Physicists formulated the resonance frequency of the grating from the Fabry–Pérot interference between the grating thickness and the wavelength of SPPs in a short-range coupled mode. On the other hand, engineering researchers often use a lumped-element model assuming a resonant circuit consisting of an inductance of metal and a capacitance of metal-insulator-metal grating structure. Furthermore, they have considered that the resonant circuit excites a strong magnetic field independent of SPPs. This study compares each physical model and numerical simulation results, then clearly shows that all resonance frequencies and features of the circuit resonance can be described by the Fabry–Pérot interference of the SPPs in short-range coupled mode. Moreover, the estimated resonance frequencies obviously correspond to the local maxima of the transmittance of the nanograting with the various thicknesses and pitches. In this case, a strong magnetic field can be observed in the insulator layer as if it might be an isolated magnetic quantum. However, since materials show no magnetism at near-infrared frequencies, the magnetic response appears due to the contribution of SPPs.

Magnetic Resonant Cavity Composing of a Three Layered Plasmonic Nanostructure

Abstract:The magnetic-type plasmon resonant of a metal-dielectric-metal nanocavity working at the wavelength of 1.55 mum is explored, in which the upper layer is periodically patterned with metallic nanostrip arrays. In the dielectric film layer, the magnetic energy intensity is enhanced about 1700 times when irradiated with a p-polarized plane wave. We numerically studied the dispersion of the modes and the Q-value of this periodic cavity arrays. Q value is estimated about 18 and still has room for further improvement. It provides a new type of nanocavity that exhibits a strong magnetic response.
Singular perturbations approach to localized surface-plasmon resonance: Nearly touching metal nanospheres

Abstract:Metallic nano-structures characterised by multiple geometric length scales support low-frequency surface-plasmon modes, which enable strong light localization and field enhancement. We suggest studying such configurations using singular perturbation methods, and demonstrate the efficacy of this approach by considering, in the quasi-static limit, a pair of nearly touching metallic nano-spheres subjected to an incident electromagnetic wave polarized with the electric field along the line of sphere centers. Rather than attempting an exact analytical solution, we construct the pertinent (longitudinal) eigen-modes by matching relatively simple asymptotic expansions valid in overlapping spatial domains. We thereby arrive at an effective boundary eigenvalue problem in a half-space representing the metal region in the vicinity of the gap. Coupling with the gap field gives rise to a mixed-type boundary condition with varying coefficients, whereas coupling with the particle-scale field enters through an integral eigenvalue selection rule involving the electrostatic capacitance of the configuration. By solving the reduced problem we obtain accurate closed-form expressions for the resonance values of the metal dielectric function. Furthermore, together with an energy-like integral relation, the latter eigen-solutions yield also closed-form approximations for the induced-dipole moment and gap-field enhancement under resonance. We demonstrate agreement between the asymptotic formulas and a semi-numerical computation. The analysis, underpinned by asymptotic scaling arguments, elucidates how metal polarization together with geometrical confinement enables a strong plasmon-frequency redshift and amplified near-field at resonance.

Molding Reflection From Metamaterials Based On Magnetic Surface Plasmons

Abstract:We demonstrate a dramatically molded reflection of an electromagnetic (EM) wave from the magnetic metamaterial (MM) surface occurring near the magnetic surface plasmon (MSP) resonance. It is found that on one side of the source the reflected field nearly cancels the incoming field, giving rise to a shadowy region near the MM surface, while on the other side the reflected field considerably enhances the incoming field, resulting in a brightened region. Our analysis indicates that this effect arises from the coupling of the EM wave to the MSP band states which exhibit giant circulations going only in one direction due to the broken time reversal symmetry in MMs. Possible applications based on this effect are manifested in designing a robust one-way EM waveguide (OEMW), a 90 degrees beam bender, and a beam splitter, which are shown to work even in deep subwavelength lateral scale (similar to lambda/10), with lambda the wavelength of the propagating EM wave. Furthermore, the dependence of the OEMW on the channel width, the robustness of the OEMW against the defect and disorder, and the tunability of the working frequency by an external magnetic field are also studied.

Abstract:We theoretically analyze surface magnetoplasmon modes in a compact circular cavity made of magneto-optical material under a static magnetic field. Such a cavity provides two different methods for the surface wave to circulate in a unidirectional manner around the cavity, which offers more freedom, both in the one-way direction and in the frequency range, for designing nonreciprocal photonic components.
