Abstract:Visual perception is a crucial component of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), enabling them to acquire image information of the underwater environment, recognize target objects, and achieve autonomous control. In underwater environments, the propagation of light is affected by various factors, such as absorption and scattering of water. Therefore, higher technical proficiency and stronger adaptability are required by visual perception systems. Underwater scenes suffer from color distortion and low visibility due to the absorption and scattering of light. To address these issues, an autonomous underwater vehicle visual perception enhancement method using area-to-point kriging and multi-color space embedding was proposed. Color correction in multiple color spaces is guided by contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization and grey world assumption correction of color deviation in the Lab color space. In the RGB color space, color deviation is corrected by applying the grey world assumption and intensity constraints. Additionally, a visibility restoration strategy based on a complete underwater imaging model is introduced. Area-to-point kriging is used to eliminate pixel overlap caused by forward scattering. The proposed method is an interpretable and generalizable underwater image enhancement method that can effectively improve underwater image quality. Its advantages also include significant improvements in underwater SIFT detection, geometric estimation, image segmentation, and biological monitoring tasks. The superiority of the proposed method is verified by experiments in four underwater scene datasets.
