Abstract:Mentoring continues to build momentum among startups and established enterprises due to its positive impact on individuals and organizations. Unlike previous studies, this research focuses on mentoring higher level leadership, such as the CEO, and demonstrates its unique relationship to organizational innovativeness. Our sample included 200 mentored executives and entrepreneurs who personally identify and exploit opportunities. Our findings confirm that mentoring top leaders positively relates to their perceived innovativeness of the organization and that the relationship is mediated by these leaders' perception of psychological safety within the organization. Our findings also confirm that the relationship is negatively moderated by these leaders' cognitive adaptability. The reliability and validity of the results have been proved by using confirmatory factor analysis and advanced regression analytics. As a result, this work demonstrates the value of mentoring top leadership and advocates the importance of establishing a psychologically safe environment to inspire not only top leadership to try new avenues but also for all those within the organization to speak up and speak out. Additionally, our findings encourage organizations to proactively and selectively prioritize mentoring among top leadership, taking into account their differing levels of cognitive adaptability. Finally, further research could focus on how to provide greater support for mentors of higher level leaders.

Abstract:Background: Mentoring relationships play a critical but poorly understood role in mentoring's overall success. To overcome these knowledge gaps, a study of mentee experiences in the Palliative Medicine Initiative, a structured research-based mentoring program, is proposed. The program's clearly described mentoring approach, competency-based mentoring stages and curated mentoring environment ensure a consistent mentoring experience. It provides a unique platform to study mentoring relationships longitudinally and its implications on professional identity formation. Methodology: The Tool Design Systematic Evidence-Based Approach methodology is used to map and employ current understanding. A review of recent reviews on mentoring processes, mentoring's effects, professional identity formation and professional identity formation assessment tools lay the foundation for the design of semi-structured interviews and mentoring diaries to evaluate the characteristics of successful mentoring relationships and mentoring's impact on professional identity formation. The data accrued from these tools were evaluated using this methodology whilst changes in professional identity formation were assessed using the Ring Theory of Personhood. Results: The semi-structured interviews revealed four themes: stakeholders, mentoring stages, mentoring relationships and professional identity formation whilst the mentoring diaries revealed two: mentoring processes and mentoring relationships. Two final domains emerged - mentoring relationships and professional identity formation. Conclusions: The Palliative Medicine Initiative's structured stage-based mentoring approach, trained stakeholders, curated environment, assessment-directed and personalized mentoring support reveal seven developmental stages of mentoring relationships. These culminate in changes to the values, beliefs and principles that shape how mentees see, feel and act as professionals. These findings suggest that mentoring programs may help to further develop and fine-tune their professional identity formation.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of the latest developments in the field of corporate coaching and mentoring. Design/methodology/approach Provides a viewpoint on the coaching and mentoring field drawing on research from Europe and the US. Findings Structured or supported coaching and mentoring within organisations is evolving rapidly and research is at last beginning to provide valuable insights into effective practices. Some strongly‐held assumptions are being challenged along the way. Greater definitional clarity, within specific contexts, contributes to efficacy. Increasing professionalisation with the coaching and mentoring sector is being helped by dialogue between the various bodies representing coaches and mentors and by the spread of supervision. Originality/value The article provides a succinct overview of the current position of the corporate coaching and mentoring arena and offers insights into how the field will develop in the future.
Facilitated engagement approach: A novel approach to guide mentor conversations

Abstract:Background Mentorship has been recognized as a strategy to develop leadership competencies in clinical leaders and has been integrated into leadership programs. However, there are few published frameworks to guide mentor conversations with mentees training to assume nursing leadership roles. Objective This study explores mentors' perceptions of 6-month mentorship, a component of the Strengths-Based Nursing Leadership program, the effectiveness of the Facilitated Engagement Approach, a pedagogical strategy developed to facilitate conversation between the mentor and mentee, and the impact of mentorship on leadership practice of mentees. Methods A mixed method qualitative and quantitative approach was used with semi-structured interviews and bi-weekly survey among mentors. Data were thematically analyzed. Results Mentors described the use of the Facilitated Engagement Approach to guide their mentorship conversations and found it to be effective in mentoring program participants. Mentors described techniques used and the process of deepening a reflective mentorship conversation. The Spiraling Process (58 %) and the Story Sharing Process (74 %) were integral aspects of the Facilitated Engagement Approach used. Mentorship was found to be impactful in that mentors reported a change in their mentee. Conclusions The Facilitated Engagement Approach was an effective tool for mentees and mentors to develop leadership capacities.

Reverse-mentorship of the core concepts in philosophy and mental health: a medical education case report

Abstract:Aims The aim of this medical education case report was to outline the development and outcomes of a reverse-mentorship project that enabled cross-generational collaborative learning. The project took the shape of a philosophy of psychiatry journal club facilitated by a psychiatry core trainee in west London, UK. Background Reverse-mentorship reverses traditional roles of mentor and mentee. It is an increasingly fashionable concept in medical education. The junior mentors the senior clinician. The implicit learning outcomes include provision of a two-way learning process, development of mentoring skills for the more junior clinician and collaboration that builds social capital within the workplace. Reverse-mentorship is effective when the junior mentor is recognised for their expertise in a particular area. In this instance, the junior mentor has a special interest in the philosophy of psychiatry. Method Junior mentor and senior mentees formed a monthly journal club. The club tracked arguments from anti- and biological psychiatry on the meaning of mental illness. The debate offered insight into a semantic analysis of mental illness and a deeper conceptual understanding of medicine. The learning material derived from the core concepts of philosophy and mental health (Fulford et al.). The role of the mentor was to facilitate group discussion around arguments from relevant papers. A survey, adapted from a recent reverse-mentorship review article, measured the quality of educational experience for mentor and mentees. Result Overall, mentees (senior clinicians) agreed that the mentor (junior clinician) displayed attributes and behaviours for effective mentoring across most domains, including enthusiasm, effective communication, respect for mentee expertise and active listening to the needs of the mentee. The mentor was particularly impressed with the mentees’ openness to learn new concepts and respect shown. General reflections on the experience of reverse-mentorship were positive overall. A thematic review highlighted particular aspects, including: a good way to learn a new skill and great opportunity to develop professional skills of mentoring. Conclusion The importance of mentoring in medical education is well established. Reverse-mentorship is a new concept that looks to harness the unique qualities of millennials, including their aptitudes for empowerment, innovation and collaboration. This medical education case report shows that an enthusiastic junior clinician can successfully pilot an educational-mentoring scheme aimed at senior clinicians. To make more explicit the intuitive benefits of reverse-mentorship, longitudinal reviews are needed. However, this case report contributes important insights into this burgeoning field of medical education.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to show how philosophies and guiding theoretical models have helped develop the mentoring practices of a master’s degree program with students seeking to become Certified Mental Performance Consultants. We present a series of challenges that we have encountered as mentors in this program. These challenges center around the consulting student, coach interactions, situations that have warranted a need for referrals, and mentor burnout. In each challenge, we discuss how our philosophy and models of supervision helped guide our decisions and the lessons learned from these various situations. Ultimately, these challenges and experiences helped us improve the program through changes in our mentorship structure and general logistics. We hope that our lessons, ideas for program improvement, and the rationale of how our mentoring philosophy supported our decision making at the time may be useful to mentors who oversee graduate-level programs.

Abstract:Background: Efforts to support flagging mentoring programs facing shortages of experienced clinical mentors have had an unexpected and welcome effect. Supplementing traditional mentoring programs with peer-mentoring have not only addressed gaps in practice, structure, support and mentee oversight but have offered mentees charged with peer-mentoring duties the opportunity to take on mentoring roles under senior supervision. This study evaluates the experiences of peer-mentors within a local research mentoring program to better understand and advance this endeavor. Methods: Semi-structured interviews and post-interview surveys based on recent reviews on mentoring were employed. Adapting the Systematic Evidence Based Approach, data was analysed using thematic and content analysis. Results were combined using the Jigsaw Perspective to ensure that key elements of the different mentoring stages were identified. Results: The interviews and surveys revealed the following domains: Motivation, Initiation, Practicing, and Mentoring Environment. Conclusion: These findings provide novel insight into a structured framework that may help guide the experiences, training, assessment, and oversight of peer-mentors beyond the auspices of our local program. These general observations will equip host organizations with the direction they need to take in designing and executing peer-mentoring training and assessment programs of their own. Whilst the stages of peer-mentoring need further evaluation and an effective means of assessment and support pivotal, we believe our findings suggest that peer-mentoring may not only help to address the shortfall in mentors but is an invaluable learning experience that prepares and instils key values, beliefs and principles in young would-be mentors.

Abstract:<p>Our article depicts and interrogates the claims for seeing coaching and mentoring as being distinct from each other, and rather suggests that context is agentic in determining which aspects of these two helping orientations are likely to be used by practitioners. To start with, our article traces the development of coaching and mentoring as two separate discourses. Traditionally, coaching has been associated with a shorter term performance focus, with the coach portrayed as a process‐ rather than a content knowledge−based expert. By contrast, mentoring has a longer‐term holistic focus, where the mentor has direct experience and knowledge in the setting that the mentee is operating in. Then, we discuss some limitations of seeking conceptual distinctiveness in purely theoretical terms, including accentuating differences of practices that cannot easily be disentangled from each other in practice. Therefore, on the basis of a case study, where coaching and mentoring behaviors are used by leaders and managers, we argue that context plays an agentic role and influences which of the helping orientations is used by practitioners. We conclude that, context being multifaceted, it leads to a kaleidoscope of coaching/mentoring behaviors, which supports a practice‐based approach to the debate.</p>

Evaluating the impact of new imaging tests: promises and pitfalls.

Abstract:The introduction of a new diagnostic imaging test into cancer clinical practice creates both anticipation and confusion. The use of 18F-fluorodexoyglucose (18FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) in breast cancer is a good example. Early studies indicated high sensitivity for regional nodal metastases (1), whereas later studies in patient populations more representative of early breast cancer diagnosis showed much poorer performance (2). More recently, data have supported the potential utility of 18FDG PET/CT in locally advanced breast cancer (3,4); based on these data, current clinical guidelines recommend 18FDG PET/CT as an optional test in stage III breast cancer (5). Nevertheless, the data in support of the use of 18FDG PET/CT for locally advanced breast cancer are from relatively small and largely retrospective series, and controversy remains about the utility of 18FDG PET/CT in the initial evaluation of patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer at high risk for recurrence. In this issue of the Journal, Groheux et al. (6) shed some additional light on this topic. In one of the largest series to date, the authors describe their prospective evaluation of 18FDG-PET/CT in consecutive patients over the course of 5 years with newly diagnosed stage II or III breast cancer. Restricting inclusion in their series to women without positive sentinel lymph nodes, they found that 18FDG PET/CT detected N3 disease in 16% of patients overall and was positive for suspected M1 disease in 17% to 47% of patients with stage IIB to stage IIIC breast cancer. Importantly, in the subset of patients with long-term follow up, 18FDG PET/ CT evidence of M1 disease (pathologically confirmed in 40% of patients) was predictive of disease-specific survival. The Groheux et al. study (6) was a long-term undertaking and supports the utility of 18FDG-PET/CT in locally advanced breast cancer and possibly in stage IIB and IIIA disease. Although the Groheux et al. study (6) adds considerably to the data supporting the use of FDG PET/CT in stage IIB to stage IIIC disease, the study also illustrates some of the difficulties in thoroughly investigating the utility and prognostic value of diagnostic tests. Clear guidance on optimal evaluation and reporting of diagnostic tests has been published (7–9). These guidelines form an appropriate and robust directive for diagnostic testing and have become the standard for diagnostic laboratory assays, but they are difficult, and in some cases impossible, to fully satisfy for diagnostic imaging studies. In the early evaluation of a new diagnostic imaging modality, it is common to collect data prospectively and then determine whether results correlate with endpoints of interest in a post hoc analysis. Although this data-mining approach is appropriate in hypothesis generating and for secondary endpoints, it is critical for primary evaluation of prognostic biomarkers that the putative diagnostic criteria be prospectively defined and that the study be powered to test these variables. Retrospective definition of diagnostic criteria that are supported by the data introduces a high likelihood of bias in favor of the experimental test, whereas an underpowered study can yield incomplete or inaccurate results. For laboratory-based diagnostic tests, conducting follow-up on studies with prospectively determined diagnostic criteria can be carried out ethically and with relatively modest cost. However, for an imaging study, costs, logistics, and potential medical risks make large-scale, prospective, phase III studies a challenge. For example, whereas a study of a laboratory test often requires little direct subject participation other than perhaps the removal of an additional tube of blood during routine phlebotomy or consent for use of archival pathologic source material, imaging trials require significant subject time commitment and may involve the need for an invasive biopsy to confirm results, adding risk and expense. Whereas enrollment in drug trials is frequently brisk when there is the potential for clinical benefit from the experimental therapeutic, blinded diagnostic imaging trials often struggle to meet accrual goals because the patient is being asked to participate with no possibility of direct benefit. Thus, because of a variety of factors, but to a great degree because of cost and feasibility, many evaluations of diagnostic imaging tests are undertaken with the experimental test being performed as part of standard of care, as was done in this case. Can a new diagnostic test be accurately assessed in the context of clinical care? Although such studies may be prospective, they are not randomized, and there is often an incomplete reference standard. There is bias introduced because only those patients who choose to undergo the “experimental” test as part of their standard of care are eligible for the study. Most important, in the absence of blinding, the “experimental” imaging test results are provided to patients and providers, who are often compelled to use the results of the experimental test to direct decisions on whether to use tests that are part of the reference standard (eg, whether or not to get another imaging test or a biopsy to confirm the results of the modality under study) or to direct therapy. In the Groheux et al. article (6), for example, standard imaging was specifically chosen in many cases to clarify the 18FDG-PET/CT findings rather than act as a standard companion to it. Furthermore, the experimental test could be used to direct therapy, whereas the ideal study protocol would prohibit disclosure of results of the experimental test to prevent alteration of subsequent management. Abstract:This AMEE guide discusses theoretical principles and practical strategies for health professions educators to promote impactful mentoring relationships. Traditional definitions are challenged, distinctions are made between roles such as mentor, advisor, coach and sponsor. As educational environments change and options for professional development expand, we argue that the traditional dyadic format of mentoring alone will not help mentees to maximise their professional growth. Newer formats of mentoring are discussed in detail and their advantages and disadvantages compared. We use a variety of theoretical concepts to anchor the practice of mentorship: self-focussed and other-focussed motives; psychological safety; personal interpretive framework; Daloz model for balancing support and challenge; zone of proximal development; communities of practice; and development along multiple layers of competence. Recommended strategies for effective mentoring are based on extensive review of literature, as well as combined professional mentoring experiences of the authors. We use key principles from the theories described and phases of mentoring relationships as foundations for the suggested best practices of mentorship. Finally, we emphasise the role of mentees in their own professional development and provide tips for them on seeking mentors, expanding their mentoring network and taking the lead in setting the agenda during mentoring meetings and formulating action plans for their own advancement.

Abstract:This article describes the institution of the mentor which facilitates contact and support from the peer and thus helps to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness. It was also emphasized that the mentor provides professional and emotional support and thus helps reduce feelings of anxiety and frustration. It boosts self-confidence and self-esteem, as it provides rich opportunities for reflection on the new role and awareness of the strengths and weaknesses that need strengthening and improvement. Reference was also made to the role of coach. The training as mentioned concerns a method that belongs to the same category of practical methods as the institution of the mentor. The in-school mentoring process as referred to in this article includes goal-oriented learning practices between two individuals that lead to behavior change so mentor and coach training programs can offer valuable services at relatively low cost to the state and quite high benefit for education.
Developing implant mentoring programmes: breaking down the components

Abstract:Mentoring has been identified as a key component of training in implant dentistry. However there has been little guidance about how this should take place, the expected outcomes, who should be providing mentoring, and the processes involved. Dentists are required to ensure they are appropriately trained, competent and confident when undertaking clinical tasks. Mentoring will play a key role in giving assurance that these are in place. This article, which is partly based on the College of General Dentistry publication Mentoring in Implant Dentistry: Good Practice Guidelines, provides background and context to the role of mentoring in implant dentistry training programmes. Key components of structured mentoring programmes are described to assist mentors, mentees, and implant education providers.
[Significance of CT findings and catecholamine determination in peripheral blood of asymptomatic pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma].

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to assess the CT findings and significance of hormone determination in the peripheral blood of asymptomatic patients with pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. CT findings in 29 patients with surgically proven pheochromocytoma(n = 19) and paraganglioma(n = 10) were reviewed. Nine patients(31%) were symptomatic and 20 (69%) were asymptomatic. Tumor size ranged from 39 mm to 114 mm(mean: 60 mm) in symptomatic patients and 11 mm to 100 mm(mean: 50 mm) in asymptomatic ones. Of the 9 symptomatic patients and 18 asymptomatic patients, a homogeneous solid pattern was seen in 4 and 4, mixed pattern in 2 and 6, and massive necrotic pattern in 3 and 8 patients, respectively, on CT scans. The CT attenuation values in symptomatic cases ranged from 30 HU to 50 HU(mean: 41 HU) on precontrast CT scans and 60 HU to 111 HU(mean: 77 HU) on postcontrast CT scans, while those in asymptomatic cases ranged from 15 HU to 48 HU(mean: 33 HU) on precontrast CT scans and 66 HU to 133 HU(mean: 95 HU) on postcontrast CT scans. There were no statistically significant differences in tumor size, homogeneity, or CT attenuation values between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. All symptomatic patients and 17(89%) of 19 asymptomatic cases showed elevated levels of catecholamine (epinephrine) or norepinephrine in the peripheral blood. Our study showed that the CT findings in asymptomatic patients were similar to those in symptomatic patients, and 89% of asymptomatic patients showed elevation of catecholamine in the peripheral blood. Determination of catecholamine level in the peripheral blood is recommended for preoperative diagnosis in patients suspected of having asymptomatic pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma on CT scans.

Abstract:Background: Effective mentorship is an important component of medical education with benefits to all stakeholders. In recent years, conceptualization of mentorship has gone beyond the traditional dyadic experienced mentor-novice mentee relationship to include group and peer mentoring. Existing theories of mentorship do not recognize mentoring's personalized, evolving, goal-driven, and context-specific nature. Evidencing the limitations of traditional cause-and-effect concepts, the purpose of this review was to systematically search the literature to determine if mentoring can be viewed as a complex adaptive system (CAS). Methods: A systematic scoping review using Krishna's Systematic Evidence-Based Approach was employed to study medical student and resident accounts of mentoring and CAS in general internal medicine and related subspecialties in articles published between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2023 in PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, ERIC, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases. The included articles underwent thematic and content analysis, with the themes identified and combined to create domains, which framed the discussion. Results: Of 5,704 abstracts reviewed, 134 full-text articles were evaluated, and 216 articles were included. The domains described how mentoring relationships and mentoring approaches embody characteristics of CAS and that mentorship often behaves as a community of practice (CoP). Mentoring's CAS-like features are displayed through CoPs, with distinct boundaries, a spiral mentoring trajectory, and longitudinal mentoring support and assessment processes. Conclusion: Recognizing mentorship as a CAS demands the rethinking of the design, support, assessment, and oversight of mentorship and the role of mentors. Further study is required to better assess the mentoring process and to provide optimal training and support to mentors.
Toward Mentoring in Palliative Social Work: A Narrative Review of Mentoring Programs in Social Work

Abstract:Background: Mentoring by an experienced practitioner enhances professional well-being, promotes resilience, and provides a means of addressing poor job satisfaction and high burnout rates among medical social workers. This is a crucial source of support for social workers working in fields with high risk of compassion fatigue and burnout like palliative care. Implementing such a program, however, is hindered by differences in understanding and application of mentoring practice. Aim: This narrative review of mentoring practice in social work seeks to identify key elements and common approaches within successful mentoring programs in social work that could be adapted to guide the design of new mentoring programs in medical social work. Methodology and Data Sources: A literature search of mentoring programs in social work between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2015, using Pubmed, CINAHL, OVID, ERIC, Scopus, Cochrane and ScienceDirect databases, involving a senior experienced mentor and undergraduate and/or junior postgraduates, was carried out. A total of 1302 abstracts were retrieved, 22 full-text articles were analyzed, and 8 articles were included. Results: Thematic analysis of the included articles revealed 7 themes pertaining to the mentoring process, outcomes and barriers, and the characteristics of mentoring relationships, mentors, mentees, and host organizations. Discussion and Conclusion: Common themes in prevailing mentoring practices help identify key elements for the design of an effective mentoring program in medical social work. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of these findings upon clinical practice in palliative care and on sustaining such a program.
The developmental experiences of basketball mentor coaches

Abstract:Numerous studies have examined the developmental activities of expert coaches. However, empirical studies on the development of mentor coaches in sport are scarce, despite literature reporting benefits of coach mentoring. The purpose of the present study was to examine the developmental experiences of mentor coaches who were involved in a structured mentoring program embedded in a level-one basketball coach education program. Four mentor coaches (one female) who met the selection criteria participated in structured retrospective interviews. Quantitative data such as mentor coaches’ demographic, athletics and coaching experiences were analyzed to calculate the means, standard deviation, and frequency of mentor coaches’ profile. Results were partially consistent with literature on expert coaches where mentor coaches (1) were competitive athletes, (2) held leadership positions as athletes, and (3) had accumulated at least 10 years of coaching experience and were successful coaches at the developmental level and beyond. Qualitative data were content analyzed using the narrative method to examine how mentor coaches learned their craft. Results show that (1) past coaches greatly influenced the development of mentor coaches’ mentoring knowledge, especially in the early stage of their coaching career, (2) exposure to different levels of mentoring appears to be useful in preparing them for eventual mentoring roles, and (3) self-directed learning helped mentor coaches to enhance their mentoring knowledge. The results are discussed in relation to literature on coach learning and development. Practical applications of the findings are also proposed.

Abstract:Introduction: Effective mentoring can contribute to wellness and career growth and satisfaction. However, the same social forces and interpersonal dynamics affecting all relationships can compromise mentoring relationships. This is especially true when there are issues that are compounded by structural disadvantage due to racism, gender bias, social class, and other discriminatory factors. The Mentoring Across Differences (MAD) sessions are a workshop designed to develop and nurture skills, tools, self-awareness, and mindful practice in mentors and mentees. The workshop encourages participants to gain confidence in navigating differences across a variety of domains. Methods: We designed interactive sessions for faculty as part of a nine-part training series on mentoring in an academic setting. Teaching methods drew from adult learning theory. We used cases distilled from real teaching and mentoring experiences to trigger discussion and activate emotion and intrinsic motivation. Participants' prior knowledge and experience were drawn on to cocreate knowledge through small-group peer learning. Results: As part of a course, 167 participants completed the sessions; several hundred more people participated in them in faculty development venues. Participants highly rated the open discussions regarding differences and enhanced awareness of their assumptions, specifically highlighting knowledge and tools addressing bias in their roles as mentors and teachers. Discussion: The MAD sessions function both as an important module in a comprehensive mentoring curriculum and as stand-alone sessions. They fill a critical need of faculty and training institutions to explore difference in order to foster diversity and inclusion.
