Abstract:The separation of medium and high carbon number linear and cyclic olefins and alkanes is a great challenge in the petrochemical industry, due to the closer molecular structure and physical properties with increased carbon chains. The adsorptive separation offers an alternative to the conventional energy-intensive distillations, but its separation efficiency is limited by the low adsorption capacity and high energy penalty for regeneration. Herein, we employed anion-pillared porous materials (SIFSIX-1-Cu, SIFSIX-2-Cu-i and ZU-61) that addressed the separation challenge of cyclohexene and cyclohexane. ZU-61 with suitable pore size and high-density anions exhibits recorded cyclohexene uptake capacity (6.11 mmol·g -1 ), 3 times of the common zeolite 13X (2.11 mmol·g -1 ) as well as the high separation selectivity. Combined with single-crystal diffraction experiment and simulation studies, the results demonstrate the dominated role of anions in discriminating different kind of H atoms (-C-H and =C-H), which enables the efficient discrimination towards cyclohexene from cyclohexane. Moreover, benefiting from the moderate strength enabled by the anions, the cyclohexene saturated ZU-61 could be easy regenerated under 80 ºC, the value is obviously lower than that of zeolite 13X (200 ºC). This work demonstrates the superiority of anions in recognizing the olefins and paraffins with medium and high carbon number and offers guidance to the related challenging separations.
Kinetic and Equilibrium Study of the Enantioseparation of Fluoxetine on a New Β-Cyclodextrin Column by High Performance Liquid Chromatography

Abstract:A new β-cyclodextrin preparative chiral stationary phase was developed and utilized to separate racemic fluoxetine by high performance liquid chromatography. Kinetic and equilibrium constants for the chromatographic enantioseparation of racemic fluoxetine, using water and buffer (TTAA) as the mobile phase, were evaluated by moment analysis on the basis of equilibrium-dispersive and linear driving force models. Other parameters, including the voidage of the column and the axial dispersion coefficient, were also determined. The parameters obtained were used in the simulation of two single enantiomer band profiles. It was found that the experimental and simulated results match quite well confirming that the parameters used in simulation were correct.

Abstract:Columns suitable for use in anion chromatography can be prepared by coating a packed reversed-phase HPLC column (C18 silica or polystyrene particles) with a cationic surfactant. The efficiency is improved dramatically by first coating the column with a nonionic surfactant and then subsequently with the cationic surfactant. The thickness of the first coated layer as well as the chemical structure of the surfactant have a major effect on the column performance. Actual separations are included to demonstrate the convenience and practical use of the coated columns. Using this approach, columns with 12 900 theoretical plates for the 15-cm column (or 86 000 plates/m) were produced, giving well shaped peaks with an average asymmetry factor of 1.09. The coated layers were found to be stable, giving retention times with an average relative standard deviation of 1.6% for 12 consecutive runs.

Abstract:In this work, a series of chiral phenethylamine synergistic tricarboxylic acid modified ,B-cyclodextrin bonded stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were synthesized via a sim-ple one-pot synthesis approach. Various racemates (aryl alcohols, flavanones, triazoles, benzoin, etc. ) were well separated on the tricarboxylic acid modified chiral stationary phases in both normal and reversed modes with good reproducibility and stability, and the influence of mobile phase composition on reso-lution (Rs) were deeply investigated. The RSD values of Rs for repeatability and column-to-column were below 1.28% and 3.05%, respectively. Hyperbranched Anion Exchangers Prepared from Polyethylene Polyamine Modified Polymeric Substrates for Ion Chromatography

Abstract:High hydrophilic anion stationary phases play a crucial role in the separation behavior of ion chromatography. Herein, we report novel polymeric anion exchangers grafted with polyethylene polyamines, including ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine and tetraethylene pentaamine, via a facile epoxy-amine polymerization method. The anion exchangers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and elemental analysis. The chromatographic performance of the stationary phases was evaluated with the separation of common inorganic anions, organic weak acids and highly polarizable anions. Seven common anions (F−, Cl−, NO2−, Br−, NO3−, SO42− and HPO42−) can be separated within 18 min by using hydroxide eluent in isocratic mode. By adopting different polyethylene polyamines as hyperbranched units, the four types of new stationary phases displayed high efficiencies and good reproducibility. The columns exhibit large exchange capacities at 76.5–184.8 μmol•column−1 (4.6 × 150 mm, i.d.) with efficiency up to 20293 plate m−1 (Cl−). The RSDs of the retention time were less than 0.27% and the RSDs of the efficiency were less than 1.95% by consecutive injections after working for two months. The self-fabricated column was successfully applied to determine the chloride content in exhaled breath condensate.

Abstract:The hydrophobicity of polymer-based anion exchangers is a persistent problem in suppressed anionic chromatography (SAC) due to its adverse effect on chromatographic performance. Herein we describe polyelectrolyte-grafted anion exchangers with modified hydrophilic intermediate layers. The anion exchangers were functionalized by successively grafting a linear cationic condensation polymer (LCCP), a preprepared polyelectrolyte. The carboxylic/hydroxylic intermediate layers formed during thiol-radical-mediated polymerization exert distinct effects on the phase capacity and hydrophobicity. The separation of typical inorganic anions, polarizable anions, and organic acids shows that the anion exchangers display good performance in SAC mode.
A polar-copolymerized method to prepare silica-based anion exchanger for ion chromatography

Abstract:A novel silica-based strong anion exchanger was developed for ion chromatography by copolymerizing methyltrichlorosilane and 3-chloropropyltrichlorosilane. The method allows the column capacity to be easy control simply by adjusting the ratio of silanes. The unwanted residual silanol groups onto the surface of silica gel could also be greatly reduced by this strategy. The effective column capacity of the column used was measured to be 50.8 μequiv/column (2.03 μequiv/cm). The exchanger was characterized by solid state CP/MAS (13)C NMR and elemental analysis and its separation performance was evaluated for the separation of common inorganic anions. The results showed that the column had good separation efficiency (e.g. the plate number of nitrite is 80,000/m) and the separation mechanism was observed to be dominantly governed by ion exchange mechanism. The utility of the column was demonstrated for the determination of nitrite and nitrate in saliva sample.

Abstract:Chemical constitution and construction of functional sites play a crucial part in the chromatographic behavior of stationary phases. We present novel polymeric anion exchangers covalently grafted with linear quaternary ammonium polyelectrolytes via simple one-step epoxy-amine polymerization. In separation of various anionic analytes, the newly developed anion exchangers showed high efficiency (e.g., > 30,000 plates m(-1) for chloride with hydroxide elution) and peculiar chromatographic behavior as compared to previously reported hyper branched phases. By adopting different amines as the building unite of linear polyelectrolytes, the two types of model anion exchangers displayed segregated selectivity which in our opinion is associated with charge density, hydrophilicity and low cross-linking of the functionalities.

Abstract:The enantioselective resolution of terfenadine enantiomers by reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography with beta-cyclodextrin as a chiral mobile phase additive is described. A C-18 reversed phase column was used as separation stationary phase. The effect of some factors such as concentration of ethanol and beta-cyclodextrin and the pH of mobile phase on the resolution was investigated. The results showed that nearly baseline separation of terfenadine enantiomers was obtained as mobile phase were composed of NaClO4 (0. 08 mol/L) : ethanol: diethylamine (75:25:0.5) with 25 mmol/L beta-cyclodextrin, at pH 6.2.

Abstract:A novel polymer-based zwitterionic separation material was synthesized by a two-step reaction, in which 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate−ethylene dimethacrylate copolymer beads were first activated with epichlorohydrin, whereafter (2-dimethylamino)ethanesulfonic acid inner salt was coupled to the epoxide groups on the activated beads in a quaternizing reaction. The resulting material carried strong/strong charge zwitterionic pendant groups, whose charge properties did not change over a wide pH range. It was capable of separating inorganic anions and cations both independently and simultaneously using aqueous solutions of perchloric acid or perchlorate salts as eluent. It was found that the retention of cations and anions depended on the individual ions in the analyte, not on type of salt injected, as reported for ODS columns dynamically coated with zwitterionic detergents using water only as eluent. This study also revealed that both the concentration and the water structure related properties of the eluent ions were important for the retention of ionic species. The mechanism appears to involve the interaction of the chaotropic anion component with the quaternary ammonium group, resulting in an increasing cation-exchange capacity of the zwitterion up to a perchloric acid eluent concentration of ∼10 mM. Above this concentration the material appears to become saturated, and the retention times of both cations and anions become practically independent of the HClO4 concentration.

Abstract:The covalent modification of polymeric particles has been a challenge due to their chemical inertness. Herein we describe a facile and neat method via thiol-ene reaction to immobilize cysteamine/cysteine onto allylmethacrylate-divinylbenzene (AMA-DVB) and ethylvinylbenzene-divinylbenzene (EVB-DVB). The introduced functionalities were verified by elementary analysis and scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy. This modification enabled the further grafting of hyperbranched condensation polymers (HBCPs), which converted the particles into anion exchangers. The anion exchangers demonstrated good separation with carbonate/bicarbonate eluents and hydroxide eluents for suppressed anion exchange chromatography. In the case of a 3-layered anion exchanger, simultaneous separation of nine model anions was achieved by isocratic elution in 17 min with efficiencies up to 16,100 plates m−1. High stability and dependable durability was exhibited in long-term tests.

Abstract:β-Cyclodextrin can be functionalized by derivation of reactive hydroxyl on the ring due to its special chiral environment and structural characteristics, which can be used to identify or separate a variety of chiral substance. In this manuscript, a series of excellent chiral stationary phases for high-performance liquid chromatography were developed for enantioseparation by using anhydride modified β-cyclodextrin bearing chiral (R/S)˗α˗phenethylamine or (S)-(+)-2-amino-1-propanol. They were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and BET. These chiral stationary phases presented good resolution and repeatability, about 17 kinds of enantiomers were effectively separated. And most of enantiomers were separated better than those reported in the literature in the same both normal and reversed phase modes. The RSD values of Rs for repeatability and column-to-column were below 0.44% and 2.83%, respectively. All results revealed that these new CSPs show great prospect for chiral separation in actual applications.

Abstract:A novel anion exchange stationary phase was synthesized based on polystyrene-divinylbenzene beads and poly (amine-epichlorohydrin) cationic polyelectrolyte. Epichlorohydrin and methylamine as monomers were used to prepare quaternized cationic polyelectrolyte and hyperbranched layers with a denser charged density and high hydrophilcity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and elemental analysis were utilized to characterize the particle surface and chemical composition of modified microspheres. The chromatographic evaluation was investigated by separating the analytes containing of common anions (fluoride, chloride, nitrate, phosphate and sulfate) and polarizable anions (iodide, thiocyanate and thiosulfate). High column efficiency was obtained with the plate number per meter up to 20,607 N/m for chloride. Fast separation of five common anions and three polarizable anions was accomplished within 11 min. Finally, the contents of thiosulfate in water reducing agent samples were determined with the homemade column. The linearity of the method was satisfactory over a concentration range of 5-120 mg/L with a correlation coefficient of 0.9972. The relative standard deviations were all less than 1.50% for retention time, peak height and peak area. The recoveries over the range of 93.67-116.15% were obtained by analyzing real spiked samples. The result suggested that the prepared stationary phase exhibited effective separation, desirable reliability and considerable stability for application in common anions and polarizable anions analysis.

Abstract:Polyamidamine (PAMAM) dendrimer-functionalized hydrothermal nanosized carbonaceous spheres (HNCSs) were prepared and utilized as latexes for agglomerated anion exchange chromatography (AEC) stationary phase. The high-concentration and scalable production of monodisperse HNCSs (73–98 nm) was accomplished via the polyquaternium-7-assisted hydrothermal carbonization of fructose. The novel PAMAM-based quaternizations of HNCSs were designed by the amidation with PAMAM and epoxy-amine addition reaction with glycidol in aqueous solution. The mild functionalization condition leads to well-kept morphology of HNCSs, which forms one even latex layer on the sulfonated surface of polystyrene-divinylbenzene microbeads for the construction of AEC packing. Under isocratic elution, seven common inorganic anions and five organic acids were baseline separated in 9 min on prepared packing with efficiencies of 54,000–79,800 plates m−1 and asymmetry factor (As) of 1.02–1.12. The obtained separation efficiency, peak symmetry, and analysis time were superior to reported or typical commercial counterparts. The quick separation of polarizable anions in 7 min and carbohydrates in 5 min could also be carried out with symmetrical peaks (As: 1.00–1.18) and high efficiencies (49,700–62,100 N/m). Favorable stability and reproducibility were proved by continuous flushing and injection. The constructed packings were further applied to the determination of thiosulfate and sulfate in water reducer, galacturonic acid in Angelica polysaccharide hydrolysate, and fluoride samples in 4 min.

Abstract:This work reports the application of hydrothermal carbon nanospheres (HCNSs) as stationary phases in ion chromatography. HCNSs were facilely quaternized through polycondensation of methylamine and 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether. The quaternization was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Owing to the electrostatic interaction, quaternized HCNSs were equably attached onto the surface of sulfonated polystyrene-divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) beads to construct the anion exchangers. The aggregation was verified by scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis. Common anions, aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, polarizable anions, and aromatic acids were well separated on the stationary phases with good stability and symmetry. The prepared column was further applied to detect phosphate content in Cola drink samples. The limit of detection (S/N=3) was 0.09mg/L, and the relative standard deviation (n=10) of retention time was 0.31%. The average recovery was 99.58%.
Enantiomer Separation by Strong Anion-Exchange Capillary Electrochromatography with Dynamically Modified Sulfated Beta-Cyclodextrin.

Abstract:A novel mode of capillary electrochromatography (CEC) based on a dynamically modified stationary phase was presented for chiral separation. The capillary column was packed with strong anion-exchange (SAX) stationary phase packing; the sulfated beta-cyclodextrin (S-CD), which was added to the mobile phase, was dynamically adsorbed to the packing surface. Separation of enantiomers was achieved by their different abilities to form an inclusion complex with the adsorbed S-CD. The enantiomers of tryptophan, praziquantel, atropine, metoprolol, and verapamil were successfully separated in this system with a column efficiency of 36000-412000 plates/m. The resolution value obtained for atropine was as high as 11.23. The superiority of CEC with a dynamically modified stationary phase over that with a physically adsorbed stationary phase was demonstrated. The influence of ionic strength, S-CD concentration, and methanol content on separation was also studied.

Abstract:New findings are reported on simple ways to modify an ordinary HPLC column to obtain efficient ion chromatographic (IC) separations. Permanently coating a column with an ionic surfactant is known to produce an effective column for IC. We now show that incorporation of a nonionic surfactant in the coating, or coating in separate layers, results in a dramatic reduction of ion retention times and gives sharper peaks. Dynamic coating by incorporating a small amount of an alcohol, diol or zwitterion in the aqueous mobile phase permits good separations of alkanecarboxylic acids. A mobile phase containing a quaternary ammonium cation and a zwitterion anion provides excellent separations of common anions on a silica C18 column. An aqueous eluent containing a mixture of a zwitterion 4-(2-hydroxyethyl) acid and methanesulfonic acid can be used in conjunction with a standard cation exchange column. After passing through a membrane suppressor, the mobile phase has a slightly acidic pH, permitting divalent transition metal ions (as well as others) to be detected by conductivity.
High-capacity Anion Exchangers Based on Poly (Glycidylmethacrylate-Divinylbenzene) Microspheres for Ion Chromatography.

Abstract:Poly (glycidylmethacrylate-divinylbenzene) microspheres were prepared by the two-staged swelling and polymerization method and applied to prepare anion exchange stationary phases. Methylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, diethylamine and triethylamine were selected to prepare the quaternary ammonium groups of anion exchangers, respectively. The diameters and surface characteristics of microspheres were measured by scanning electron microscope and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. The anion exchangers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrum, elemental analysis and breakthrough curve methods. The chromatographic performances of anion exchangers were illustrated by separating conventional anions, organic weak acids and carbohydrates. The results indicated that the anion exchange capacities were controllable by changing either the content of glycidylmethacrylate in microspheres or the number of bonded quaternary ammonium layer. Meanwhile, the substituents of quaternary ammonium groups greatly influenced the separation properties of anion exchangers. Finally, the three-layer methylamine-quaternized anion exchanger was successfully applied for the determination of fluoride in tea sample. The content of fluoride was detected to be 0.13mgg(-1) without the interference of acetate and formate.
Self-prepared cation-exchange column for the separation of amines

Abstract:A new chromatographic stationary phase of monodispersed pellicular cation exchanger was prepared. Monodispersed macroporous poly(ethlenevinylbenzene-co-divinylbenezene) beads of 6—8 μm diameter were prepared by a two-step swelling and polymerization method. Then carboxyl groups were introduced by polymerization of maleic anhydride with unreacted vinyl groups on the resin beads. The columns containing the new particles are 100% compatible with solvents commonly used for HPLC and can be used in a wide range of pH. Amines are used widely in chemical industry. The amounts of ammonium salts and trimethylamine are used to estimate the freshness of food. So it is important to detect amines in chemical and food industries. In this paper, the column packed with these carboxylate beads was used to separate monovalence metals, ammoniumion, and low-molecular weight amines in a single isocratic run by using sulfuric acid as eluent. The results showed the chromatographic stationary phase provided preferable resolution, low detection limit and good repeatability for these analyses. It's hoped that this new type of column can be used in practical sample detection.

Abstract:In this work, a series of chiral phenethylamine synergistic tricarboxylic acid modified β-cyclodextrin bonded stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were synthesized via a simple one-pot synthesis approach. Various racemates (aryl alcohols, flavanones, triazoles, benzoin, etc. ) were well separated on the tricarboxylic acid modified chiral stationary phases in both normal and reversed modes with good reproducibility and stability, and the influence of mobile phase composition on resolution ( R s ) were deeply investigated. The RSD values of R s for repeatability and column-to-column were below 1.28% and 3.05%, respectively. Hence, the fabrication of tricarboxylic acid modified chiral stationary phase (CSPs) is a new efficient strategy to improve the application of β-cyclodextrin as CSPs in the field of chromatography.
