Abstract:Introduction Effective educational initiatives can elevate the quality of patient care globally. Simulation-based education is widely used in high-resource settings, but barriers exist to its widespread use in low-resource settings. Vital Anesthesia Simulation Training (VAST) overcomes these barriers by offering immersive, low-cost portable simulation along with simulation facilitator training. During the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person courses were stopped for more than 2 years. Postpandemic, a 3-day VAST SIMposium was hosted in Rwanda to unite 42 VAST facilitators from 12 widespread countries to introduce new and revised course materials and to rejuvenate dormant skills. The purpose of this study was to explore how the VAST SIMposium influenced perceived development of skills, confidence, and engagement in a community of practice for simulation educators working in low-resource settings. Methods This qualitative study involved in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of 16 VAST SIMposium attendees. Transcripts of audio recordings were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results Six themes were identified during data analysis: 1) Diversity with shared passion for medical education; 2) Supportive in-person learning environment; 3) Simulation-based education relevant to low-resource settings; 4) Camaraderie; 5) Building knowledge, skills, and confidence; and 6) Being part of a community of practice. Conclusion The SIMposium rejuvenated passion, knowledge, skills, and, most importantly, strengthened global connections and partnerships. These collaborations will benefit areas that are underrepresented in simulation and will ultimately improve patient outcomes. A SIMposium of this format is an efficient and effective way to foster sustainable global dissemination of simulation-based global health education.

Students Teaching Students: A Method for Collaborative Learning

Abstract:The Student Small Group Presentation (SSGP) model, a student-centered approach, is introduced and applied to learning communities. Similar to the jigsaw classroom, small groups of students in learning communities are responsible for teaching material to their peers. Unlike other jigsaw techniques, presentation groups in the SSGP teach an entire lesson based on collaborative work conducted outside of class. Presenters are responsible for thorough analysis of course material as they lead a discussion among a small group of peers. Students meet with the same small group throughout the semester, creating a feeling of intimate community within the larger learning community. By challenging students to become well versed on a section of course material, SSGPs promote student confidence, enhance critical thinking skills, and provide the opportunity to work as a member of a team. Jean Halley is an Associate Professor of Sociology at College of Staten Island, CUNY, in Staten Island, NY. Abstract:Disparities for women and minorities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers have continued even amidst mounting evidence for the superior performance of diverse workforces. In response, we launched the Diversity and Science Lecture series, a cross-institutional platform where junior life scientists present their research and comment on diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM. We characterize speaker representation from 79 profiles and investigate topic noteworthiness via quantitative content analysis of talk transcripts. Nearly every speaker discussed interpersonal support, and three-fifths of speakers commented on race or ethnicity. Other topics, such as sexual and gender minority identity, were less frequently addressed but highly salient to the speakers who mentioned them. We found that significantly co-occurring topics reflected not only conceptual similarity, such as terms for racial identities, but also intersectional significance, such as identifying as a Latina/Hispanic woman or Asian immigrant, and interactions between concerns and identities, including the heightened value of friendship to the LGBTQ community, which we reproduce using transcripts from an independent seminar series. Our approach to scholar profiles and talk transcripts serves as an example for transmuting hundreds of hours of scholarly discourse into rich datasets that can power computational audits of speaker diversity and illuminate speakers' personal and professional priorities.

Abstract:SIGCSE members are part of a worldwide community of computing educators and professionals. This discussion provides participants an opportunity to share global differences in vocabulary and interpretation of idioms and assumptions that pervade teachers and researchers. Lack of cultural knowledge can hinder understanding meaning of terms; communication among colleagues can be confusing. Lack of understanding also inhibits the leveraging of scholarly work and cooperation among colleagues from different cultures. E.g., information technology in Australia means the field of computing, and the baccalaureate degree "Computer Science and Technology" in China is equivalent to a degree in computer engineering. Terminology that Americans use such as AP for Advance Placement or K-12 for pre-undergraduate education is meaningless in many parts of the world. This discussion is an outgrowth of an ad hoc subcommittee formed by the ACM Education Council on global issues. Serving as a reference for the discussion is the seminal article by Clear, A. et al. "What's in a Name?: International Interpretations of Computing Education Terminology," in The Proceedings of the 2015 ITiCSE on Working Group Reports. Attending this BOF should heighten awareness of what changes might lead to a truly global computing education community. In addition to Owens, Alison Clear from New Zealand, Ming Zhang from China, and John Impagliazzo from the USA have agreed to help lead the discussion.

Abstract:The Virtual Rooms Videoconferencing Service (VRVS) provides a worldwide videoconferencing service and collaborative environment to the research and education communities. This system provides a low cost, bandwidth-efficient, extensible means for videoconferencing and remote collaboration over networks within the High Energy and Nuclear Physics communities (HENP). VRVS has become a standard part of the toolset used daily by a large sector of HENP, and it is used increasingly for other DoE/NSF-supported programs. The current features included multi-protocol, multi-OS support for all significant video enabled clients including: H.323, Mbone, QuickTime, MPEG2, Java Media Framework, and other clients. The current architecture makes VRVS a distributed, highly functional, and efficient software-only system for multipoint audio, video and web conferencing and collaboration over global IP networks. VRVS has developed the VRVS-AG Reflector and a specialized Web interface that enables end users to connect to any Access Grid (AG) session, in any of the AG "virtual venues" from anywhere worldwide. The VRVS system has now been running for the last five and half years, offering to the HENP community a working and reliable tool for collaboration within groups and among physicists dispersed world-wide. The goal of this ongoing effort is to develop the next generation collaborative systems running over next generation networks. The new developments area integrate emerging standards, include all security aspects, and will extend the range of VRVS video technologies supported to cover the latest high end standards quality. We will focus the discussion on the new capability provides by the latest version V3.0 and its future evolution.

Abstract:The problem and opportunity: There is a critical and growing need to train globally focused, culturally fluent clinicians and scientists who can collaboratively defeat current and future public health threats across international boundaries. In parallel, academic conferences bring together thousands of diverse international healthcare professionals every year, yet their potential to provide the crucial professional development training necessary to advance internationalized medicine is often underutilized. The solution: We developed and now first report an innovative healthcare education program that used an academic conference as the framework around which to build a structured, non-incidental virtual exchange (VE) for training globally and culturally proficient healthcare professionals. Herein we further describe the program's design and content, successes and challenges, and lessons learned. Program Overview: Using a smartphone based social-networking and conference management app with available translation capabilities, pre- and post-graduate trainees prepared and participated in poster presentations, seminars, and workshops to learn current research and best-practices in COVID-19 medicine, while engaging with their international peers in networking and professional-development exercises. The 2-week intensive program included daily synchronous interactive seminars on various topics in COVID-19 medicine, international team-based asynchronous activities such as preparing, presenting, and constructively critiquing research posters at virtual poster sessions, and expert-led wellness and cultural-competence workshops. Participants received initial training in the norms of intercultural communication, syllabus content and expectations, incentives, icebreaker activities, and program technology. They learned then-current COVID-19 medical research, therapies, and best practices, as well as professional "soft skills" including leadership, team building, scientific/clinical presentation, verbal/written communication skills, and intercultural competence. The program vastly expanded participants' international professional networks to enhance their mentorship and career development opportunities. Conclusions: Participants reported receiving substantial benefits from the program, with many reporting immediate translation of lessons learned toward improving healthcare education or practice in their home communities.

Abstract:New conference formats are emerging in response to COVID-19 and climate change. Virtual conferences are sustainable and inclusive regardless of participant mobility (financial means, caring commitments, disability), but lack face-to-face contact. Hybrid conferences (physical meetings with additional virtual presentations) tend to discriminate against non-fliers and encourage unsustainable flying. Multi-hub conferences mix real and virtual interactions during talks and social breaks and are distributed across nominally equal hubs. We propose a global multi-hub solution in which all hubs interact daily in real time with all other hubs in parallel sessions by internet videoconferencing. Conference sessions are confined to three equally-spaced 4-h UTC timeslots. Local programs comprise morning and afternoon/evening sessions (recordings from night sessions can be watched later). Three reference hubs are located exactly 8 h apart; additional hubs are within 2 h and their programs are aligned with the closest reference hub. The conference experience at each hub depends on the number of local participants and the time difference to the nearest reference. Participants are motivated to travel to the nearest hub. Mobility-based discrimination is minimized. Lower costs facilitate diversity, equity, and inclusion. Academic quality, creativity, enjoyment, and low-carbon sustainability are simultaneously promoted.

Abstract:The Open Science Grid (OSG) includes work to enable new science, new scientists, and new modalities in support of computationally based research. There are frequently significant sociological and organizational changes required in transformation from the existing to the new. OSG leverages its deliverables to the large scale physics experiment member communities to benefit new communities at all scales through activities in education, engagement and the distributed facility. As a partner to the poster and tutorial at SciDAC 2008, this paper gives both a brief general description and some specific examples of new science enabled on the OSG. Abstract:Virtual Institute of Astroparticle Physics (VIA), integrated in the structure of Laboratory of AstroParticle physics and Cosmology (APC) is evolved in a unique multi-functional complex of $e-science$ and $e-learning$, supporting various forms of collaborative scientific work as well as programs of education at distance. The activity of VIA takes place on its website and includes regular videoconferences with systematic basic courses and lectures on various issues of astroparticle physics, regular online transmission of APC Colloquiums, participation at distance in various scientific meetings and conferences, library of their records and presentations, a multilingual Forum. VIA virtual rooms are open for meetings of scientific groups and for individual work of supervisors with their students. The format of a VIA videoconferences was effectively used in the program of XIV Bled Workshop to provide a world-wide participation at distance in discussion of the open questions of physics beyond the standard model. The VIA system has demonstrated its high quality and stability even for minimal equipment (laptop with microphone and webcam and WiFi Internet connection).

Abstract:We are developing the Virtual Experiences (Vx)Lab, a research and research training infrastructure and capability platform for global collaboration. VxLab comprises labs with visualisation capabilities, including underpinning networking to global points of presence, videoconferencing and high-performance computation, simulation and rendering, and sensors and actuators such as robotic instruments locally and in connected remote labs. VxLab has been used for industry projects in industrial automation, experimental research in cloud deployment, workshops and remote capability demonstrations, teaching advanced-level courses in games development, and student software engineering projects. Our goal is for resources to become a "catalyst" for IT-driven research results both within the university and with external industry partners. Use cases include: multi-disciplinary collaboration, prototyping and troubleshooting requiring multiple viewpoints and architectures, dashboards and decision support for global remote planning and operations.

Abstract:As the COVID-19 pandemic prevented planned international travel opportunities for students and faculty, faculty at three universities from three professions created a four-day innovative, online learning experience. Each session included presentations from each country, small-group discussions, and evaluation. The topics appealed to students regardless of profession or nationality. Daily evaluations showed attendees valued the experience. The benefits of international and interprofessional learning were evident; students gained better understanding of other professions and health care systems through sessions that expanded their thinking. International appreciation and learning can be prioritized without physical travel.

Abstract:The 2020 global pandemic related to the coronavirus has led to unprecedented interruptions in typical patient care and resident education. Teleconferencing software was deployed by many institutions to comply with quarantine and social-distancing regulations. To supplement the loss of clinical experience for trainees, the authors implemented a novel virtual-educational programming using virtual visiting professors and virtual grand rounds. The authors describe the two different formats and advantages such as access to multiple speakers on diverse, innovative topics and decreased financial burdens to the host program. However, the authors do acknowledge some disadvantages from lack of face-to-face social interaction/networking and the need to consider time-zone differences. Both new programs were embraced by trainees at the authors' own institution and residents/medical students across the United States and Canada and around the world. The authors believe teleconferencing should be permanently incorporated into future educational opportunities for plastic surgeons, as it provides easy access to high-quality information.

Abstract:Murine T2D4 cells derived from a T cell hybrid line were incubated with partially purified or electrophoretically pure mouse interferon and tested for the expression of Fc gamma R as assessed by a) counting the number of cells forming rosettes with IgG-sensitized sheep erythrocytes, and b) incubating the cells with heat-aggregated rabbit IgG and then determining either the number of cells stained with fluorescein conjugated goat anti-rabbit IgG or the extent of labeling by using radioactive iodinated staphylococcus protein A. Although interferon induced a rapid increase in Fc gamma R expression on the Fc gamma R-positive T2D4 cells, it did not induce either Fc gamma R on the Fc gamma R negative BW5147 cells or Fc gamma R on either cell line. Human leukocyte interferon enhanced the expression of Fc gamma R on human Burkitt cells (Daudi) but did not affect the expression of Fc gamma R on mouse cells. We suggest that interferon may influence several effector functions of the immune system by modulating Fc receptor expression.

Abstract:Abstract As the global health crisis unfolded, many academic conferences moved online in 2020. This move has been hailed as a positive step towards inclusivity in its attenuation of economic, physical, and legal barriers and effectively enabled many individuals from groups that have traditionally been underrepresented to join and participate. A number of studies have outlined how moving online made it possible to gather a more global community and has increased opportunities for individuals with various constraints, e.g., caregiving responsibilities. Yet, the mere existence of online conferences is no guarantee that everyone can attend and participate meaningfully. In fact, many elements of an online conference are still significant barriers to truly diverse participation: the tools used can be inaccessible for some individuals; the scheduling choices can favour some geographical locations; the set-up of the conference can provide more visibility to well-established researchers and reduce opportunities for early-career researchers. While acknowledging the benefits of an online setting, especially for individuals who have traditionally been underrepresented or excluded, we recognize that fostering social justice requires inclusivity to actively be centered in every aspect of online conference design. Here, we draw from the literature and from our own experiences to identify practices that purposefully encourage a diverse community to attend, participate in, and lead online conferences. Reflecting on how to design more inclusive online events is especially important as multiple scientific organizations have announced that they will continue offering an online version of their event when in-person conferences can resume.

Abstract:Science communication and outreach are essential for training the next generation of scientists and raising public awareness for science. Providing effective science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational outreach to students in classrooms is challenging because of the need to form partnerships with teachers, the time commitment required for the presenting scientist, and the limited class time allotted for presentations. In our Present Your Ph.D. Thesis to a 12-Year Old outreach project, our novel solution to this problem is hosting a youth science workshop (YSW) on our university campus. The YSW is an interpersonal science communication and outreach experience in which graduate students from diverse scientific disciplines introduce middle and high school students to their cutting-edge research and mentor them to develop a white-board presentation to communicate the research to the workshop audience. Our assessment of the YSW indicated that participating young students expressed significantly more positive attitudes toward science and increased motivation to work in a STEM career after attending the workshop. Qualitative follow-up interviews with participating graduate students' show that even with minimal time commitment, an impactful science communication training experience can be achieved. The YSW is a low-cost, high-reward educational outreach event amenable to all disciplines of science. It enhances interest and support of basic science research while providing opportunities for graduate students to engage with the public, improve their science communication skills, and enhance public understanding of science. This YSW model can be easily implemented at other higher education institutions to globally enhance science outreach initiatives.
