Abstract:Four new nickel and copper complexes [ML{SSP(OC 10 H 7 1) 2} 2], where M=Ni(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ); L=5,7,7,12,14,14 hexamethyl 1,4,8,11 tetraazacyclotetradeca 4,11 diene(hmtade) or 5,7,7,12,14,14 hexamethyl 1,4,8,11 tetraazacyclotetradecane(hmta); SSP(OC 10 H 7 1) 2=O,O′ bis(1 naphthy)dithiophosphate, were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, infrared spectra, electronic spectra and TG DTA thermal analysis. The complexes are non electrolytes in DMSO. O,O′ bis(1 naphthyl) dithiophosphate ligand that behaves in monodentate fashion coordinates to metal ion.

Abstract:A new route to obtain C-functionalized dioxotetraamine, in which two independent chelating groups 8-quinolinol and dioxotetraamine are included, is described. In addition, two trinuclear metal complexes are synthesized and fully characterized. The thermodynamic properties of the ligand and its respective metal complex were investigated by a potentiometric titration method. Coupled with UV spectra, the difference in affinities for copper ion between dioxotetraamine and 8-quinolinol in the new ligand are investigated and the results show that 8-quinolinol is a stronger donor group than the dioxotetraamine macrocycle in an aqueous solution. Over pH 3~11, 8-quinolinol interacts 100% with the copper ions while dioxotetraamine is only partially coordinated.Key words: macrocycle, dioxotetraamine, 8-quinolinol, copper ion, stability constants.

The ligand contains two independent chelating groups. At 25.0+/-0.1degreesC, I=0.1mol(.)dm(-3) NaNO3, pH titration has been performed to study the stability properties of L-5-R-5,10-phenanthroline-Cu(II) with proton, copper(H) and cobalt(II). The ternary complexes have been shown to possess interesting properties due to the involvement of three chelating groups, 5-substituted-1,10-phenanthroline, 8-hydroxyquinoline and dioxotetraamine. In addition, potentiometric titrations have been performed to study the protonation of L-5-R-1, 10-phenanthroline-Cu(II) (R=CH3,H,Cl,NO2) and their stability properties with copper(II) and cobalt(II). Abstract:A novel 8-hydroxyquinoline substituted dioxotetraamine (L) has been designed, synthesized and fully characterized. At 25 degreesC and l=0.1 mol . dm(-3) NaNO3, the stepwise protonation equilibria of the ligand have been studied by potentiometric titrations and the stability constants have been determined. The binding ability of L to metal ions such as Cu(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II) has been investigated and the difference in stabilities between metal ion complexes has been also discussed. The results show that 8-hydroxyquinoline is a stronger donor group than the open chain dioxotetraamine and at molar ratio ligand: metal=1:1, the former is 100% chelated to metal ions while dioxotetraamine could only be partially coordinated.

Abstract:Two novel 3-hydroxyquinoline connected dioxotetraamines have been designed and synthesized, and have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, mass spectra and H-1 NMR. The two ligands L-1 and L-2 have two chelating groups. Each can react with a transition metal ion forming complexes. Potentiometric titrations have been performed in 0.1 mol/L NaNO3 at 25 degreesC giving the 1:1 stability constants. Coupled with UV spectroscopy the affinity of 8-hydroxyquinoline and dioxotetraamines to transition metal ions were compared and the possible structure of the metal complex species in solution was discussed. The results show that as to Mn2+, Zn2+ and Co2+, 8-hydroxyquinoline is a stronger chelating reagent than dioxo[13] or [14]tetraamine macrocycles and at 1:1 molar ratio (M:L), the former binds in 100% to the metal ions, while the dioxotetraamines can be only partially or not coordinated.

Abstract:The novel bicyclic pentadentate ligand 5-methyl-1,5,9,24,25-pentaazapentacyclo[7.7.7.5.5]pentacosane-11,13,15,18(25),20,22-hexene (L-1) has been synthesized. Because of its cross-bridged topology it exhibits a relatively rigid preorganized conformation especially appropriate to complex formation, as shown by the crystal structure of the monoprotonated ligand salt, HL1ClH2O [orthorhombic, P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 9.4405(5) Angstrom, b = 13.3617(5) Angstrom, c = 16.710(1) Angstrom]. The complexes of L-1 with both iron(II) and manganese(II) have been characterized, including the crystal structures of [FeL1CH3CN][FeCL4] and [MnL1Cl][PF6] [monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 10.0460(5) Angstrom, b = 19.237(9) Angstrom, c = 15.6254(8) Angstrom, beta = 95.97(2)degrees and a = 7.745(2) Angstrom, b = 22.786(4) Angstrom, c = 14.639(4) Angstrom, beta = 105.074(10)degrees respectively]. The manganese complex is high spin with mu(eff) = 5.96 and theta = 2.5 +/- 0.8 cm(-1), indicating weak ferromagnetic interactions. The reactions of the complexes with tert-butyl hydroperoxide and hydrogen peroxide have been shown by ESR spectroscopy to produce the tert-butyl peroxyl and hydroperoxyl radicals, as evidenced by their spin adducts with the spin traps N,N-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide and N-tert-butyl-phenyl-nitrone.

Abstract:The synthesis and structural, electrochemical, spectroscopic, and magnetic characterizations of Cr-III(HMC) catecholate and semiquinonate complexes are reported herein, where HMC is 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane. cis-[Cr-(HMC)(Cat)](+) complexes (Cat = catecholate, [1](+); tetrachlorocatecholate, [2](+); and 3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate, [3](+)) were prepared from the reaction between appropriate catechol and [Cr-III(HMC)-Cl-2]Cl reduced in situ by zinc. Chemical oxidation of [3](+) by FcPF(6) resulted in cis-[Cr(HMC)(SQ)](2+) ([3](2+), SQ = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-semiquinonate). Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed the cis-chelation of the Cat/SQ ligand around the Cr metal center and confirmed the Cat/SQ nature of the ligands. Reversible oxidations of Cat to SQ were observed in the cyclic voltammograms of [1](+)-[3](+), while the Cr-III center remains redox inactive. The absorption spectrum of the SQ complex [3](2+) exhibits an intense spin-forbidden transition in solution. Time-delayed phosphorescence spectra recorded at 77 K revealed that all catecholate complexes emit from the E-2 state, while [2](+) also emits from the T-2(1) state. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate the Cat complexes exist as S = 3/2 systems, while the SQ complex behaves as an S = 1 system, resulting from strong antiferromagnetic coupling of the S = 3/2 Cr center with the S = 1/2 SQ radical. Density functional theory (DFT) shows the similarities between the SOMOs of [1](+) and [2](+) and differences in their LUMOs in the ground state.

Abstract:Two new 8 - hydroxy - 5 - quinolyl substituted dioxotetraamine macrocyclic ligands containing two independent chelating groups were prepared. As pH titration and UV absorption experiments indicated, in the copper(Ⅱ) complex of molar ratio metal: ligand =1:1, 8 - hydroxyquinolyl was 100% chelated to copper(Ⅱ) ion while dioxotetraamine was only partially so over pH 3- 9. Studies on the acid - induced dissociations of such complex species MLH-1 at various temperatures and acid concentrations were conducted. Based on the experimental data an appropriate reaction mechanism was suggested. The results showed that the dissociation mechanism was different from the classical one, while the partly coordinated dioxotetraamine macrocycles in the copper complexes played important roles during the pre - equilibrium process.

Abstract:Five metal dithiocarbamate complexes [M(PTHIQDTC) 2 ] [where PTHIQDTC is ( S )-1-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline dithiocarbamate anion and M is Ni(II) ( 1 ), Sn(II) ( 2 ), Hg(II) ( 3 ), Pb(II) ( 4 ) and Zn(II) ( 5 )] were synthesized from the reaction of MX 2 (X is Cl – for 1–3 and OAc – for 4–5 ) with ligand of triethylammonium ( S )-1-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline dithiocarbamate [Et 3 NH][PTHIQDTC] in methanolic solution at room temperature. The five complexes were characterized by IR, 1 H and 13 C NMR, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and TGA analysis. Recrystallization of [Zn(PTHIQDTC) 2 ] ( 5 ) in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) converts 5 to [Zn(PTHIQDTC) 2 (DMSO)] ( 6 ). The structure of complex 6 has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The X-ray structural analysis of 6 indicated that the zinc(II) is five-coordinated in a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal by four S atoms from two ( S )-1-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline dithiocarbamate anion ligands (PTHIQDTC) and one O atom from DMSO.

Electronic and Molecular Structures of a Series of Nickel Bis‐1,1‐Dithiolates

Abstract:A series of homoleptic Ni bis‐1,1‐dithiolates, [Ni(S2C2RR′)2]2– (R = CN, R′ = CN, CO2Et, CONH2, Ph, Ph‐4‐Cl, Ph‐4‐OMe, Ph‐4‐NO2, Ph‐3‐CF3, Ph‐4‐CF3, Ph‐4‐CN; R = NO2, R′ = H; R = R′ = CO2Et) have been synthesized from the reaction of the alkali metal salt of the ligand and nickel chloride, and isolated as tetraphenylphosphonium or tetrabutylammonium salts. The complexes were characterized by X‐ray crystallography, high‐resolution mass spectrometry, and infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electronic absorption spectroscopies. The molecular structures show a rigidly square planar Ni(II) center linking two four‐membered chelate rings whose dimensions are constant across the series. The electronic effect of the ligand substituents are revealed in the 13C NMR and electronic spectra, and corroborated by density functional calculations. Electron withdrawing groups deshield the low‐field CS2 resonance, and the signature charge transfer band in the visible region is red‐shifted. These observables have been accurately reproduced computationally, and revealed the Ni contribution to the ground state diminishes with decreasing electron withdrawing capacity of the ligand substituents. In contrast to 1,2‐dithiolates, the redox inactivity afforded by 1,1‐dithiolates stems from the smaller chelate ring and substantially reduced sulfur content that is key to stabilizing the radical form.

Abstract:The synthesis of the new ligand 1,8-bis(quinolyloxy)-3,6-dithiaoctane (1) and the corresponding Cu(II), Cu(I) and Co(II) complexes is reported. The crystal and molecular structure of the copper(II) complex, [Cu(1)](ClO4)2.3H2O, has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The complex crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Fddd, with cell data Z = 16, a = 20.326(2), b = 20.879(3) and c = 28.308(4)Å. The structure consists of discrete [Cu(1)]−2+ cations separated by (structurally disordered) perchlorate anions and three lattice water molecules per cation. The coordination geometry about the copper atom is pseudo-octahedral with the quinoline nitrogen and thioether sulfur atoms at the equatorial positions and the ether oxygen atoms at the axial positions. 1H NMR line-broadening experiments indicate that electron-transfer self-exchange reactions between the copper(I) and copper(II) complexes of (1) is immeasurably slow on the NMR time-scale. The coordination chemistry of (1) is compared with its oxygen analogue, 1,8-bis(quinolyloxy)-3,6-dioxaoctane.

Abstract:Four novel metal(II) complexes, Ni(L) 2 , Co(L) 2 , Cu(L) 2 , and Zn(L) 2 (L = 5-(2-(1,5-dimethyl-3-oxo-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)hydrazono)-1,3-diethyl-2-thioxo-dihydropyrimidine-4,6(1H,5H)-dione), were synthesized using the procedure of diazotization, coupling and metallization. Their structures were identified by elemental analyses, 1 H NMR, ESI-MS and FT-IR spectra. The effect of different central metal(II) ions on absorption bands of the metal(II) complexes was researched. The thermal properties of the metal(II) complexes were investigated by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Furthermore, the thermodynamic parameters, such as activation energy ( E *), enthalpy (∆ H *), entropy (∆ S *) and free energy of the decomposition (∆ G *) are calculated from the TG curves applying Coats–Redfern method. The results show that the metal(II) complexes have suitable electronic absorption spectra with blue-violet light absorption at about 350–450 nm, high thermal stability with sharp thermal decomposition thresholds.

Abstract:Two new compounds containing the possible Fe(III) spin-crossover cation, [Fe(qsal)2]+ (qsalH = N-(8-quinolyl)salicylaldimine), and nickel bis(dithiolene) anions have been synthesized. Both are 1 : 1 salts [Fe(qsal)2][Ni(dddt)2] CH3CN CH3OH (1) and [Fe(qsal)2][Ni(pddt)2] (2) (dddt = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolate; pddt = 6,7-dihydro-5H-1,4-dithiepin-2,3-dithiolate). They have been characterized by X-ray crystal structure determination, elemental analysis, UV-Vis spectra and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The UV-Vis spectra are dominated by [Ni(L)2]- (1, L = dddt; 2, L = pddt). Magnetic studies show antiferromagnetic interaction in 1 from intermolecular SS contacts and - stacking interactions, while the antiferromagnetic interaction in 2 is very weak.

Abstract:A novel hepta-coordinated mononuclear manganese(II) complex, [Mn(L)(2)(H2O)](ClO4)(2)(.)2.5H(2)O [L = 1,2-bis(2'-pyridylmethyleneamino)propane], was obtained by assembly reaction of a di-Schiff base ligand L with manganese(II) perchlorate. The crystal structure shows that one of the L ligand acts as a quadridentate ligand, while the other one serves as a bidentate. The Mn(II) complex was found to have activity of dismutation of superoxide (O-2(-)) in the riboflavin-methioninenitro blue tetrazolium assay.

Abstract:New dinuclear complexes with the bridging S―S coupled and dimerized quinoxaline-2,3-dithiolate (dsqdt) ligand, [TpPh2M(dsqdt)MTpPh2] (TpPh2=hydro-tris(3,5-diphenylpyrazol-1-yl)borate; M=Co, 1; M=Ni, 2; M=Mn, 3), were prepared. X-ray crystal structure studies for complexes 1–3 indicate that the dsqdt ligand forms the unique κ2-coordinated mode through S and N atoms from the same qdt unit. The absorption spectra, redox behavior and magnetic properties of the compounds are reported.

Using L-1, L-2, or dimethyl 2-[di(pyridin-2-yl)methylene]-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dicarboxylate (L-3) as the auxiliary ligand and [(Tp)Fe(CN)(3)(-) or [(i-BuTp)Fe(CN)(3)(-) [Tp = tris(pyrazolyl)borate; i-BuTp = 2-methylpropyltris(pyrazolyl)borate] as the building block, two rectangular-square Fe2Ni2 clusters [(Tp)Fe(CN)(3)-Ni(L-1)(2)](2)center dot 2ClO(4)center dot 6H(2)O (1) and [(i-BuTp)Fe(CN)(3)Ni(L-3)(2)](2)center dot 2ClO(4)center dot 6H(2)O (2) and two trinuclear clusters [(Tp)(2)Fe-2(CN)(6)Ni(L-2)(2)]center dot 8H(2)O (3) and [(TP)(2)Fe-2(CN)(6)Co(L-3)(2)]center dot 5H(2)O (4) have been prepared in parallel and structurally characterized. Complexes 1 and 2 show similar square structures, and weaker intermolecular pi-pi-stacking interactions through the pyrazolyl groups of the Tp(-) ligands are observed. 2D sheet structures are formed in complexes 3 and 4 through intermolecular pi-pi-stacking interactions. In 3, shorter S center dot center dot center dot S contacts further connect the 2D sheets to 3D supramolecular structures. Magnetic studies show intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling in complexes 1-4. Complexes 1 and 2 show obvious frequency dependencies in the alternating-current magnetic susceptibility data, indicating single-molecule-magnet behavior with effective spin-reversal barriers of 8.7 K for 1 and 13.5 K for 2, respectively.
New Route To The Mixed Valence Semiquinone-Catecholate Based Mononuclear Fe-Iii And Catecholate Based Dinuclear Mn-Iii Complexes: First Experimental Evidence Of Valence Tautomerism In An Iron Complex

Abstract:The semiquinone-catecholate based mixed valence complex, [Fe-III(bispicen) (Cl(4)Cat) (Cl(4)SQ)].DMF (1), and catecholate based (H(2)bispictn)[Mn-2(III)(Cl(4)Cat)(4)(DMF)(2)] (2) (bispicen N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine, bispictn = N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,3-propanediamine, Cl(4)Cat = tetrachlorocatecholate dianion, and Cl(4)SQ = tetrachloroserniquinone radical anion) were synthesized directly utilizing a facile route. Both the complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The electronic structures have been elucidated by UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, EPR, and magnetic properties. The structural as well as spectroscopic features support the mixed valence tetrachlorosemiquinone-tetrachlorocatecholate charge distribution in 1. The ligand based mixed valence state was further confirmed by the presence of an intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) band in the 1900 nm region both in solution and in the solid. The intramolecular electron transfer, a phenomenon known as valence tautomerism (VT), has been followed by electronic absorption spectroscopy. For 1, the isomeric form [Fe-III(bispicen)(Cl(4)Cat) (Cl(4)SQ) is favored at low temperature, while at an elevated temperature, the [Fe-III(bispicen)(Cl(4)SQ)(2)] redox isomer dominates. Infrared as well as UV-vis-NIR spectral characterization for 2 suggest that the Mn-III(Cat)(2)(-) moiety is admixed with its mixed valence serniquinone-catecholate isomer Mn-III(SQ)(Cat)(-), and the electronic absorption spectrum is dominated by the mixed charged species. The origin of the intervalence charge transfer band in the 1900 nm range is associated with the mixed valence form, Mn-III(Cl(4)Cat)(Cl(4)SQ)(-). The observation of VT in complex 1 is the first example where a mixed valence semiquinonecatecholate iron(III) complex undergoes intramolecular electron transfer similar to manganese and cobalt complexes.
The influence of thioether-substituted ligands in dicopper(II) complexes: Enhancing oxidation and biological activities

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis, structural analysis, as well as the magnetic and spectroscopic characterizations of three new dicopper(II) complexes with dinucleating phenol-based ligands containing different thioether donor substituents: aromatic (1), aliphatic (2) or thiophene (3). Temperature-dependent magnetometry reveals the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling for 1 and 3 (J = -2.27 cm-1 and -5.01 cm-1, respectively, H = -2JS1S2) and ferromagnetic coupling for 2 (J = 5.72 cm-1). Broken symmetry DFT calculations attribute this behavior to a major contribution from the dz2 orbitals for 1 and 3, and from the dx2-y2 orbitals for 2, along with the p orbitals of the oxygens. The bioinspired catalytic activities of these complexes related to catechol oxidase were studied using 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol as substrate. The order of catalytic rates for the substrate oxidation follows the trend 1 > 2 > 3 with kcat of (90.79 ± 2.90) × 10-3 for 1, (64.21 ± 0.99) × 10-3 for 2 and (14.20 ± 0.32) × 10-3 s-1 for 3. The complexes also cleave DNA through an oxidative mechanism with minor-groove preference, as indicated by experimental and molecular docking assays. Antimicrobial potential of these highly active complexes has shown that 3 inhibits both Staphylococcus aureus bacterium and Epidermophyton floccosum fungus. Notably, the complexes were found to be nontoxic to normal cells but exhibited cytotoxicity against epidermoid carcinoma cells, surpassing the activity of the metallodrug cisplatin. This research shows the multifaceted properties of these complexes, making them promising candidates for various applications in catalysis, nucleic acids research, and antimicrobial activities.
