Abstract:Rhizosphere microbiomes and plant-microbiome interactions govern many key biogeochemical processes important for plant nutrition and their ability to tolerate biotic and abiotic stresses. Several studies suggest interactions of microbes with crop plants play a prominent role in adaptation, maintenance, and survival of both the partners as well as for soil health in a number of abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, heavy metal contamination, etc., by regulating changes in terms of biochemical, physiological, and molecular processes of plants. The strain specificity plays crucial role in exploiting characteristic potential of candidate microbe to provide tolerance and alleviate negative impact of abiotic stresses in plants. During stress management, plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) have been shown to activate plant antioxidant defense machinery by regulating the activity of scavenging key enzymes to level over produced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and by regulating the amounts of proteins, polysaccharides, and important phytohormones. Many Rhizobacteria have also been shown to produce ACC deaminase enzyme initiating a cascade of physiological and biochemical changes in the plant thereby helping them withstand effects of abiotic stresses. Some of the examples for such PGPB include Azospirillum, Azotobacter, Bacillus, Bradyrhizobium, Burkholderia, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, Rhizobium, Methylobacterium, and Variovorax. In view of the projections from climate-smart agriculture research, predictions for reduced rainfall and increased effects of other abiotic stresses such as salinity across many agricultural regions worldwide are being calculated, exploitation of the beneficial plant–microbe interactions to alleviate abiotic stress effects in crops should be one of the key approaches to improving global food production.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses, such as drought, salinity, heavy metals, variations in temperature, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, are antagonistic to plant growth and development, resulting in an overall decrease in plant yield. These stresses have direct effects on the rhizosphere, thus severely affect the root growth, and thereby affecting the overall plant growth, health, and productivity. However, the growth-promoting rhizobacteria that colonize the rhizosphere/endorhizosphere protect the roots from the adverse effects of abiotic stress and facilitate plant growth by various direct and indirect mechanisms. In the rhizosphere, plants are constantly interacting with thousands of these microorganisms, yet it is not very clear when and how these complex root, rhizosphere, and rhizobacteria interactions occur under abiotic stresses. Therefore, the present review attempts to focus on root–rhizosphere and rhizobacterial interactions under stresses, how roots respond to these interactions, and the role of rhizobacteria under these stresses. Further, the review focuses on the underlying mechanisms employed by rhizobacteria for improving root architecture and plant tolerance to abiotic stresses.

Abstract:Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) play a crucial role in the enhancement of plant growth. These microorganisms inhabit plant roots and positively influence plant growth through various mechanisms. PGPR facilitate nutrient absorption, combat pathogens, and regulate plant hormone levels. Their impact is achieved through direct actions such as hormone production, enhanced iron uptake via siderophores, phosphate solubilization, and emission of volatile compounds that affect plant signaling and metabolism. In addition, PGPR interactions with rhizosphere microorganisms and the soil indirectly improve plant growth. Numerous biotic stressors affect plant PGPR. The interaction between plants and microorganisms boosts the host resistance to biotic stress. This interaction also regulates the rhizosphere soil by converting organic compounds into plant-absorbable forms, increasing molecule mobilization, and supplying amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, metabolites, and phytohormones to the host plants. In instances where plants do not secrete lipids, amino acids, carbohydrates, or terpenoids during these interactions, microorganisms contribute these compounds to plants. Investigating these mechanisms, along with changes in gene expression and receptor-mediated signaling in plants, is vital. Utilization of microbial sources as alternatives to conventional agricultural methods is a promising approach. Incorporation of these sources can enhance plant production, quality, growth, and yield.

Abstract:Plants face various biotic and abiotic environmental stresses in their lifetime. These environmental impacts reduce plant growth and productivity. Out of abiotic stressors, drought, salt, heat, and heavy metal ion contamination are the major challenges faced by plants. For overcoming these challenges, plants adopt certain physiological and biochemical changes. These changes include a variation in an aspect ratio of root-shoot length, leaf wilting, leaf abscission, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), altered relative water content, and accumulation of free radicals that can disrupt cellular homeostasis, thereby affecting cell viability. Plants also produce stress hormones, namely, abscisic acid and stress ethylene which induce closure of leaf stomata leading to reduced water loss from the plants and withstand various molecular and metabolic changes. Plants undergo physiological and metabolic changes, activating signal transduction mechanism to re-establish cellular homeostasis to generate tolerance against various abiotic stressors. The expression of stress-responsive genes is regulated not only by protein regulators but also by various regulatory RNAs.The deleterious impacts of abiotic stressors in plants can be overcome by adopting different agriculture practices along with genetic engineering approaches. However, these approaches are highly technical, time-consuming, and labor intensive and, therefore, are challenging to practice. One potential alternative to improve plant growth under abiotic stressors can be the application of plant-associated microbial communities which not only provide stress tolerance to the plants by producing a wide range of metabolites and enzymes that help plants to withstand various biotic and abiotic stresses but also improve crop productivity. Microbes mediate induction of physical and chemical changes in plants at a physical, biochemical, or molecular level in the presence of abiotic stressors to alleviate their deleterious effect, a process termed as induced systemic tolerance (IST). In this chapter, we present an elaborated account of the impact of plant-associated microbial communities on the host plants challenged to the abiotic stresses.

Abstract:Increased incidence of abiotic stresses impacting adversely plant growth and productivity in major crops is being witnessed all over the world. Therefore, as a result of such stress factors, plant growth under the stress conditions will be less than the non-stress conditions. Growing concerns and global demand for correct, environmentally-friendly techniques exist to reduce the adverse effects of plant stress. Under such stressful conditions, the role of interactions of plant and beneficial microorganisms is of great significance. Application of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) is a useful option to decrease these stresses and is now widely in practice. Plants inoculated with PGPRs induce morphological and biochemical modifications resulting in increased tolerance to abiotic stresses defined as IST (induced systemic tolerance). PGPRs increase plant growth and resistance to abiotic stresses through various mechanisms (more than one mechanism of action) such as production of ACC (1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate) deaminase, reducing production of stress ethylene, modifications in phytohormonal content, induction of synthezing plant antioxidative enzymes, improvement in the uptake of essential mineral elements, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) production, decrease in the absorbtion of excess nutrients/heavy metals, and induction of abiotic stress resistance genes. Experimental evidence also suggests that stimulated plant growth by these bacteria is the net result of various mechanisms of action that are activated simultaneously. In this review paper, we reviewed the action mechanisms through which PGPRs could alleviate abiotic stresses (salinity, drought, heavy metal toxicity, and nutritional imbalance) in plants. Use of PGPRs is predicted to become a suitable strategy and an emerging trend in sustainable enhancement of plant growth. Generally, ACC deaminase and IAA-producing bacteria can be a good option for optimal crop production and production of bio-fertilizers in the future due to having multiple potentials in alleviating stresses of salinity, drought, nutrient imbalance, and heavy metals toxicity in plants. This review paper also emphasizes future research needs about the combined utilization of stress tolerant-PGPRs with multiple plant growth promoting (PGP) characteristics under environmental stresses.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses are the most significant factors reducing agricultural productivity. Plants face extreme environmental conditions that may affect their biological mechanisms, thereby influencing their growth and development. Microorganisms possess substantial metabolites that aid in helping plants mitigate abiotic stresses. Plants’ interaction with microbes constitutes a diversified ecosystem, as sometimes both the partners share a mutualistic relationship. Endophytes, plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs), and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) are examples of microorganisms that play an essential role in alleviating abiotic stresses and, hence, improving plant growth. The plant–microbe interaction leads to the modulation of complex mechanisms in the plant cellular system. Moreover, the residing microbial flora also inhibits the phytopathogens, therefore, it becomes part of plants’ innate defense system. Keeping in view the growing environmental concerns, it is important to identify the role of the plant microbiome in the transportation of nutrients to maintain sustainable production. Furthermore, it is important to identify the factors enabling plants to recruit beneficial microbial species and how to deal with the potential pathogens. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the impacts of various abiotic stressors on agricultural productivity and the role of beneficial microorganisms in mitigating the negative effects of abiotic stresses. The literature review also shows that the beneficial microbes, including PGPRs, AMFs, and endophytes, adopt various mechanisms for ameliorating the negative effects of various stresses. It has been observed that biochar and microbes, either individually or in combination, can play a significant role in maintaining plant growth under stress conditions. Although conventional inoculation of beneficial microbes mitigates abiotic stresses and enhances productivity, the advancement in genetic engineering would help transfer specific genes from the microbes to plants to aid in abiotic stress mitigation.

Abstract:Plants can recruit soil microorganisms into the rhizosphere when experiencing various environmental stresses, including biotic (e.g., insect pests) and abiotic (e.g., heavy metal pollution, droughts, floods, and salinity) stresses. However, species coexistence in plant resistance has not received sufficient attention. Current research on microbial coexistence is only at the community scale, and there is a limited understanding of the interaction patterns between species, especially microbe‒microbe interactions. The relevant interaction patterns are limited to a few model strains. The coexisting microbial communities form a stable system involving complex nutritional competition, metabolic exchange, and even interdependent interactions. This pattern of coexistence can ultimately enhance plant stress tolerance. Hence, a systematic understanding of the coexistence pattern of rhizosphere microorganisms under stress is essential for the precise development and utilization of synthetic microbial communities and the achievement of efficient ecological control. Here, we integrated current analytical methods and introduced several new experimental methods to elucidate rhizosphere microbial coexistence patterns. Some advancements (e.g., network analysis, coculture experiments, and synthetic communities) that can be applied to plant stress resistance are also updated. This review aims to summarize the key role and potential application prospects of microbial coexistence in the resistance of plants to environmental stresses. Our suggestions, enhancing plant resistance with coexisting microbes, would allow us to gain further knowledge on plant-microbial and microbial-microbial functions, and facilitate translation to more effective measures.

Abstract:The mutualistic plant rhizobacteria which improve plant development and productivity are known as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). It is more significant due to their ability to help the plants in different ways. The main physiological responses, such as malondialdehyde, membrane stability index, relative leaf water content, photosynthetic leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence efficiency of photosystem-II, and photosynthetic pigments are observed in plants during unfavorable environmental conditions. Plant rhizobacteria are one of the more crucial chemical messengers that mediate plant development in response to stressed conditions. The interaction of plant rhizobacteria with essential plant nutrition can enhance the agricultural sustainability of various plant genotypes or cultivars. Rhizobacterial inoculated plants induce biochemical variations resulting in increased stress resistance efficiency, defined as induced systemic resistance. Omic strategies revealed plant rhizobacteria inoculation caused the upregulation of stress-responsive genes—numerous recent approaches have been developed to protect plants from unfavorable environmental threats. The plant microbes and compounds they secrete constitute valuable biostimulants and play significant roles in regulating plant stress mechanisms. The present review summarized the recent developments in the functional characteristics and action mechanisms of plant rhizobacteria in sustaining the development and production of plants under unfavorable environmental conditions, with special attention on plant rhizobacteria-mediated physiological and molecular responses associated with stress-induced responses.

Abstract:Rhizobia form nitrogen-fixing nodules on leguminous plants and convert atmospheric nitrogen to plant-utilizable ammonia resulting into increased plant growth and crop yield. The growth of crops and rhizobia is adversely affected by various abiotic stresses including high temperature, soil salinity and drought. Under saprophytic phase in the soil, free-living rhizobial population usually declines due to abiotic stresses resulting to less nodulation in different legumes. Therefore, repeated inoculation is required every year for enhancing legume productivity. For effective nodulation, establishment and persistence of rhizobia in stressed environment is prerequisite, which depends mainly on their ability to tolerate, proliferate and survive under adverse environmental conditions. The major problem of abiotic stresses is faced in rainfed agro-ecosystems, which makes the survival of bio-inoculants a problematic issue. Moreover, a remarkable difference was observed in effectiveness of rhizobial bio-inoculants from laboratory to field conditions due to various abiotic stresses faced under field conditions. The survival of rhizobial inoculants and its limitations to enhance crop growth under field conditions may be overcome by screening the rhizobial isolates, which are tolerant to different types of stressed conditions. Stress-tolerant rhizobia could provide more beneficial effects under pot house and field trials leading to increased legume crop productivity in sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:BackgroundSoil salinity and drought are an enormous worldwide problem for agriculture, horticulture and silviculture. The initial responses of plants to drought and salinity are similar; both are attributed to water deficit which inhibits plant growth and development.ScopeIn this review, an overview of the major physiological and biochemical changes that occur in plants as a consequence of salt and drought stress is presented. In addition, the role of beneficial plant growth-promoting bacteria in ameliorating many of the deleterious consequences of salt and drought stress is discussed. Mechanisms used by plant growth-promoting bacteria to ameliorate the effects of these stresses include the production of cytokinin, indoleacetic acid, ACC deaminase, abscisic acid, trehalose, volatile organic compounds, and exopolysaccharides.ConclusionGiven the fundamental understanding of many of the mechanisms operating in plant-bacterial interactions, it is expected that the practical use of beneficial bacteria in agriculture, horticulture and silviculture will grow dramatically in the coming years.Graphical AbstractOverview of salt- and drought-stress responses in plants. Abstract:Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) play a vital role in alleviating biotic and abiotic stresses in plants. They enable plant growth under adverse circumstances and help improving the yield through several direct or indirect mechanisms. With the aid of PGPR, plant can fix atmospheric nitrogen, produce phytohormones, enhance water and nutrient uptake, solubilize phosphate, and improve the provision of binding iron with the help of siderophores. PGPR-induced indirect mechanisms help plant to suppress parasitism by some deleterious rhizobacteria through induced systemic resistance, antibiosis, competition for nutrients, and production of metabolites. Thus, application of PGPR is a sustainable approach to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers in crop field. Bio-fertilizers containing PGPR have great economic prospect and potential for environmental benefits. This review highlights the various roles of PGPR in promoting growth and development of plant in a stressful environment. The study also encompasses the successful application of PGPR strains for nitrogen fixation, management of nutrients, water and salt stresses, controlling plant insects, and phytopathogens. Furthermore, recent know-how on the underlying mechanisms of PGPR-induced systemic resistance in plants will be helpful to investigate their additional uses.

Abstract:Every minute, the world’s population grows, and in order to feed them, crop output and agricultural productivity must be improved by adding crucial microorganisms that boost plant yields in various ways through nitrogen fixation, the secretion of both plant growth regulators and 1-aminocyclopropane 1-carboxylate deaminase, as well as some antimicrobial agents. Numerous endophytic bacteria have recently been used to increase plant yields, and agricultural production in addition to reducing salt stresses. Many scientists have made an effort to clarify and comprehend the processes by which bacteria promote plant growth and production. A vital substance known as 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase is produced by several bacteria, plants, and fungi to decrease ethylene levels in a plant grown under different environmental stress. The gaseous hormone ethylene (C2H4) is synthesized in plant tissues from the precursor ACC, and it has numerous biochemical roles in plants, such as cells differentiation and tissue development, seedling, root hair, leaf, and flower growth and development in addition to fruit ripening and formation of anthocyanin and volatile compounds. Thus, this critical enzyme had influential roles in plants during their positive interaction with bacteria which increase plant growth due to auxin production and protect plants against different environmental stress like drought, high salts, wilting, high level of heavy metals, contaminants with pesticides, and microbial pathogen infections. Different bacterial genera are highly ACC deaminase-producer, and these bacteria support plant growth and agricultural process. In conclusion, bacteria can replace chemicals in a variety of environmentally benign methods to boost soil fertility and plant productivity. However, much research is required to determine the efficacy of these bacteria before suggesting their use on a broad scale in the field.

Abstract:Crop plants are continuously exposed to various abiotic stresses like drought, salinity, ultraviolet radiation, low and high temperatures, flooding, metal toxicities, nutrient deficiencies which act as limiting factors that hampers plant growth and low agricultural productivity. Climate change and intensive agricultural practices has further aggravated the impact of abiotic stresses leading to a substantial crop loss worldwide. Crop plants have to get acclimatized to various environmental abiotic stress factors. Though genetic engineering is applied to improve plants tolerance to abiotic stresses, these are long-term strategies, and many countries have not accepted them worldwide. Therefore, use of microbes can be an economical and ecofriendly tool to avoid the shortcomings of other strategies. The microbial community in close proximity to the plant roots is so diverse in nature and can play an important role in mitigating the abiotic stresses. Plant-associated microorganisms, such as endophytes, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), are well-documented for their role in promoting crop productivity and providing stress tolerance. Abstract:The use of bioeffectors, formally known as plant biostimulants, has become common practice in agriculture and provides a number of benefits in stimulating growth and protecting against stress. A biostimulant is loosely defined as an organic material and/or microorganism that is applied to enhance nutrient uptake, stimulate growth, enhance stress tolerance or crop quality. This review is intended to provide a broad overview of known effects of biostimulants and their ability to improve tolerance to abiotic stresses. Inoculation or application of extracts from algae or other plants have beneficial effects on growth and stress adaptation. Algal extracts, protein hydrolysates, humic and fulvic acids, and other compounded mixtures have properties beyond basic nutrition, often enhancing growth and stress tolerance. Non-pathogenic bacteria capable of colonizing roots and the rhizosphere also have a number of positive effects. These effects include higher yield, enhanced nutrient uptake and utilization, increased photosynthetic activity, and resistance to both biotic and abiotic stresses. While most biostimulants have numerous and diverse effects on plant growth, this review focuses on the bioprotective effects against abiotic stress. Agricultural biostimulants may contribute to make agriculture more sustainable and resilient and offer an alternative to synthetic protectants which have increasingly falling out of favour with consumers. An extensive review of the literature shows a clear role for a diverse number of biostimulants that have protective effects against abiotic stress but also reveals the urgent need to address the underlying mechanisms responsible for these effects.Graphical abstractBiostimulants have protective effects against abiotic stress.

Abstract:: Plants evolved alongside microbes, enabling plants to better cope with abiotic and biotic stresses. The interactions between plant roots and local soil microbes are critical for environmental adaptation and plant health. Plants actively regulate the microbial community composition in their rhizospheres to recruit specific microorganisms that enhance their fitness in the ecosystem they inhabit. This study builds on prior research suggesting that plants have a in recruiting microbes unique in their home environment, reflecting mutual recognition and the targeted recruitment of microbes. : Using gene- and genome-centric approaches, we assessed the functional potential of root-associated microbes and profiled the host metabolites to uncover the metabolic outputs potentially regulating host-microbe interactions. Our results showed that plants adapted to drier environments experience less stress, producing fewer stress-related metabolites and impacting the recruitment of microbes with genes linked to stress relief pathways. In particular, plant-derived trimethyllysine was highly associated with microbial populations capable of improving nutrient uptake, producing plant growth-promoting compounds, and modulating stress responses. : This study highlights the critical interplay between host exudates and microbial substrate uptake as the primary mechanism of rhizosphere assembly. We demonstrate that plants actively produce metabolites to recruit microbial populations with the functional potential to enhance hosts' ability to thrive in a stressful environment. This research provides insights into the mechanisms of plant-microbe communication, rhizosphere recruitment, and the complex interplay of plant-microbe interactions. Furthermore, it highlights promising avenues for manipulating rhizosphere microbiomes to support conservation agriculture in the face of climate change.

Abstract:Crops aimed at feeding an exponentially growing population are often exposed to a variety of harsh environmental factors. Although plants have evolved ways of adjusting their metabolism and some have also been engineered to tolerate stressful environments, there is still a shortage of food supply. An alternative approach is to explore the possibility of using rhizosphere microorganisms in the mitigation of abiotic stress and hopefully improve food production. Several studies have shown that rhizobacteria and mycorrhizae organisms can help improve stress tolerance by enhancing plant growth; stimulating the production of phytohormones, siderophores, and solubilizing phosphates; lowering ethylene levels; and upregulating the expression of dehydration response and antioxidant genes. This article shows the secretion of secondary metabolites as an additional mechanism employed by microorganisms against abiotic stress. The understanding of these mechanisms will help improve the efficacy of plant-growth-promoting microorganisms.
