Abstract:Blast furnace dust clay sodium silicate ceramic particles (BCSCP) and commercial ceramic particles (CCP) were applied to treat brewery wastewater in two lab-scale up-flow biological aerated filters (BAF) to compare their abilities to act as biofilm supports. The optimal preparation conditions of BCSCP were obtained through orthogonal tests. The influence of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and air–liquid ratio (A/L) on the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3–N) were investigated. Under the selected operating parameters, the average removal efficiencies of COD and NH3–N in the BCSCP reactor had slightly better performance compared with the CCP reactor throughout the filter media. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis indicated that BCSCP had higher porosity and larger total surface area in comparison to the CCP, and the microorganisms on BCSCP were more abundant than those on CCP. Therefore, BCSCP is a potential material for use as the filter media of BAF for wastewater treatment. BCSCP application, as a novel process of treating wastes with waste, provides a promising way to use blast furnace dust (BFD).

Abstract:An up-flow ceramsite media biological aerated filter(BAF) was used for dyeing wastewater advanced treatment. Twice start-up method was employed and then the BAF reactorhad been operated steadily for160 days, while the removal efficency of COD and NH3-N was investigated on the condition of low B/C value and lacking of nutrients. Results showed that the reactorachieved mean degradation efficiency of 51.3%～56.5%forCOD and 86.5%～93.7%forNH3-N when the air/waterratio was 5:1 and hydraulic loading was 0.5 m3·m-2·h-1. The total nitrogen(TN) in this study showed slight degradation and the NO3--N was the major degradation production.The concentration of COD and NH3-N in the effluent was 39.6～45.3 mg·L-1 and 0.11～0.24 mg·L-1, respectively. The GC-MS showed that the pollutants in wastewater included butylated hydroxytoluene, cedrol, phthalic acid, and alkanes with a straight chain form nine to twenty seven. All the pollutants were bilological degraded in BAF, but the major pollutants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and cedrol still had 65.0%and 39.2%retention.

Abstract:The pilot test in which municipal sewage is treated by biological aerated filter (BAF) with burned clay pellets as microorganism carriers is carried out with scale of 12m~3 /d .The effects of filtration velocity, gas-to-sewage ratio, overloading and backwashing on the performance of BAF are investigated. The results show: (1) under the conditions of sewage temperature range of (20～23.5)℃,filtration velocity range of (6.09～8.21)m/h,gas-to-sewage ratio of 1∶1 for biocarbone aerated filter and 2∶1 for bio-nitrification filter,the effluent of BAF reach the water standards for miscellaneous use in living from COD (120～338)mg/L and NH~+ 4-N(30.0～53.6)mg/L of influent of BAF ;(2) overloading and backwashing have no remarkable effects on the quality of effluent.
Effect of modified biological aerated filter on nitrogen removal of domestic wastewater

Abstract:The aeration system installed in the middle of BAF was used for domestic wastewater treatment.Gas-to-liquid ratios、organic loadings and microbes along the reactor of BAF were investigated.Results indicate that the good performance of BAF can be achieved at hydraulic retention time 8 h,gas-to-liquid ratio 10∶1,the average removal rates of COD,TN,NH+4-N in optimal stage are 92.5%,48.6% and 69.4%,respectively.Higher organic loadings result in lower efficiencies of COD、NH+4-N removal,but the efficiency of TN removal increases to 60.5%.Based on experimental results and theoretical analysis,the mechanism of TN removal was probed.
Advanced Treatment of Low-Pollution and Poor Biodegradability Sewage by Combined Process

Abstract:A system was developed for the treatment of low-pollution sewage with poor biodegradability and a low ratio of chemical oxygen demand (CODCr) to nitrate-nitrogen (COD/NO3 -N (C/N)) ratio to achieve high efficiency. This system combines the anaerobic-oxic (AO) process with the biological aerated filter (BAF) and introduces the Fenton advanced oxidation process. A pilot test system was established, and feasibility investigations were conducted using a continuous flow of 500 L/h. The results showed that the optimal conditions for removing nitrate from sewage were achieved with a C/N ratio of 5.5-6 and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4 h. Under these conditions, the average nitrate removal efficiency was 83.36%, and the average concentration of total nitrogen (TN) in the effluent was reduced to 6.68 mg/L. Additionally, the Fenton oxidation treatment was effective in reducing the COD content of sewage, with an average removal efficiency of 82.47% and a decrease in CODCr from 55.24 mg/L to 9.68 mg/L. The combined process successfully met the stringent discharge standards after advanced treatment. Microbial community analysis revealed that the dominant genera in anoxic BAFs were Trichococcus, Comamonadaceae, Lentimicrobium, and Thauera, while the dominant genera in aerobic BAFs were mainly Acinetobacter, Thiothrix, Gemmobacter, and Caldilineaceae. The synergistic effect of various nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria in BAFs effectively removed nitrate from the sewage. Furthermore, GC-MS analysis indicated that the Fenton oxidation significantly reduced the concentration of refractory organic compounds in the sewage, including long-chain organic compounds and acrylic acid maleic acid copolymer (MA/AA). After upgrading and renovating the factory's sewage treatment facilities, the impact of the discharged effluent on the receiving drainage basin will be minimized.

Abstract:The high-strength municipal sewage was treated by the two-stage Biological Aerated Filter (BAF) pilot system with microorganism carrier of burned clay pellet. The effects of hydraulic loading rate, aeration ratio, overloading, backwashing and the height of media on the performance of BAF were investigated. In higher hydraulic loading and lower ratio of aeration, the two-stage BAF may decrease effluent COD, NH4(+)-N and SS to less than 50 mg/L, 8.0 mg/L and 20 mg/L respectively. Moreover, the operation stability was not affected remarkably by the instantaneous overloading and periodical backwashing. The backwashing step by step was proposed to save energy and infrastructural investment. In addition, the dynamic expressions for file COD and NH4+-N removal were deduced respectively.

Abstract:To improve the efficiency of low-strength domestic wastewater treatment, an immobilised-microorganism biological aerated filter (I-BAF) was established for simultaneous carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The I-BAF performance was systematically evaluated under continuous and intermittent aeration modes. At the optimal condition with an intermittent aeration control schedule of 2 h on/1 h off, the maximum removal rates of COD, NH4+-N, TN and P were 82.54%, 94.83%, 51.85% and 61.49%, respectively, and the corresponding averaged effluents could meet the first class standards of China. Further analysis of PCR-DGGE profile revealed that members of the gamma and alpha proteobacterium bacterial groups were probably responsible for the nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The I-BAF system showed excellent performance in carbon and nutrients removal, which provided a cost-effective solution for the treatment of low-strength domestic wastewater.

Abstract:The use of treated wastewater in addition to solving the problem of water shortage, can increase soil fertility and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. We aim to provide a high-quality effluent to feed membrane system, reduce treatment costs and enhance the efficiency of wastewater recycling. All experiments were conducted on a novel integrated membrane biological aerated filter (IMBAF) consisting of a down flow cylindrical biological aerated filter (BAF) filled by silica and a novel sand-coated polystyrene granules (SCP), followed by ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. IMBAF reactor, with 73.6 L volume, was operated for 270 days (in three 90-day stages) with different conditions of returning backwash water. Accordingly, BAF generated high quality water for feeding UF membrane with 94.2%, 68%, 54.4%, 91.2%, and 99.95% of turbidity, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), oil and grease (O&G), fecal coliform (FC) removal, respectively. At the end of stage 3, 99.88% of influent was recycled by UF and only 0.12% was disposed of as sludge. The BAF and UF module efficiently promote the quality of water entering RO system. After 75 days of continuous operation, the increase in trans-membrane pressure (TMP) and also decrease in RO membrane permeability were about 14% and 9.4%, respectively, indicating low clogging of the membrane. The use of BAF structure designed in this study increases the wastewater recycling rate, decreases membrane clogging and thereby reduces the costs of concentrate disposal and chemical cleaning.
Enhanced nitrogen removal of aquaculture wastewater in the combined biological aerated filter: the effect of GAC location setting

Abstract:BACKGROUND Biological aerated filter (BAF) is an efficient and economical treatment process to cope with the rapid increasing drainage of aquaculture wastewater. Here, GAC and ceramic, which have the combination advantage, was used as filters of BAF system to treat the aquaculture wastewater. The effect of filters in different sequences was also compared. The BAF with GAC at the bottom is named as GAC-down BAF, and the BAF at the top is named as GAC-upper BAF. RESULTS Results showed that the removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) in GAC-down BAF was 54.2 +/- 1.2% higher than that in GAC-upper BAF, when the HRT was 3 h and the gas-water ratio was 5:1. Additionally, it had better phosphorus and COD removal performance in the GAC-down BAF than those in the GAC-upper BAF. Microbial community analysis of biofilm attached to different filter layers indicated that the abundances of functional microorganisms like Zoogloea spp., Acinetobacter spp., Pseudomonas spp., Nitrospira spp. on GAC of the GAC-down BAF were higher than those attached to ceramsite at the same site of GAC-up BAF. CONCLUSION It was demonstrated that GAC could provide a suitable niche for the growth of functional microbes at the up-flow BAF system, and plays a key role in pollutant removals from aquaculture wastewater. Abstract:This study outlines the development of an effective pilot-scale simultaneous denitrification and nitrification (SDN) system using intermittent aeration for the removal of carbon and nitrogen from real domestic sewage. Given the limited research in this area, the main objective was to evaluate the overall performance of the SBRIA system on a pilot scale and show its benefits in domestic wastewater treatment. The structured bed reactor with intermittent aeration (SBRIA) notably achieved 57% efficiency in removing total nitrogen without requiring external carbon sources. It also demonstrated impressive removal rates of 56% for total chemical oxygen demand (COD T ) and 82% for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ), indicating its effectiveness in degrading organic matter. In addition, the SBRIA showed high pH control and managed the consumption of alkalinity without the need for an alkalizer, maintaining consistent mean values of 7.7 ± 0.8 for pH and 166.8 ± 79.8 mg·L −1 for alkalinity. The system also proved resilient against toxic shocks caused by significant variations in influent characteristics. This study offers valuable insights and compelling results into a cost-effective and efficient treatment approach using an innovative technology not previously applied at the pilot scale. Its potential to remediate polluted water is substantial.

A Bioaugmentation Agent Allowing the Advanced Treatment of Refractory Refinery Wastewater in a Biological Aerated Filter and Analysis of Its Microbial Community

Abstract:BACKGROUND The performance of a biological aerated filter (BAF) with activated sludge and nut shell activated carbon was evaluated for the advanced treatment of intractable refinery wastewater. Bioaugmenting the BAF with Pseudomonas sp. FS-01 and Bacillus sp. FS-02 and the microbial community structure between the upgrade system and the original system were also studied. RESULTS During the steady state of the BAF, the influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) was in the range 80-128 mg L-1, and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) was in the range 15-20 mg L-1. The BAF with activated carbon from nut shells as a supporting material can remove over 32% of influent COD and 95% of NH4+-N. On bioaugmentation, the average effluent COD and NH4+-N concentrations were 31.8 and 0.4 mg L-1, respectively. The predominant genera in BAF1 were Nitrospira, an unranked member of the Anaerolineaceae and an unclassified member of the Rhizobiales, while the dominant genera in BAF2 were Pseudomonas, Bacillus and an unranked member of the Anaerolineaceae. CONCLUSIONS The coconut shell activated carbon has outstanding properties for removing COD and NH4+-N, along with high shock loading resistance. Bioaugmentation can improve the COD remove efficiency by 35% in relation to only adding sludge. Microbial diversity analysis indicated that bioaugmentation accelerated the transformation of the bacterial community structure, quickly becoming dominant strains. Abstract:Biomass wastewater contains plenty of cellulose, hemicellulose, starch, saccharide, organic acid and protein. It has high COD value and leads to environment pollution and resource waste. Biomass wastewater was treated in this investigate using a biological aerated filter (BAF) on laboratory scale, and the effect of treatment in different hydraulic retention time (HRT) had been studied. The results show that the optimum HRT is 10 h. The value of COD and TN in effluent is 74.90 mg/L and 1.21 mg/L respectively when run 10 h, which are under the highest concentration of the second category of pollutant discharge allowed in the state sewage discharge standard (GB 8978-1996). When the system is stabile, evaluating the population characteristics of dominating microorganism in BAF with biology analysis such as microbial screening, single bacteria evaluation and 16S rDNA sequences analysis. The dominant bacteria belonged to Pseudomonas sp., Acinetobacer sp., Stenotrophomonas sp., Rhodococcus sp.and Microbacterium sp..

Abstract:Biological Aerated Filter(BAF) is a new technology developed from the base of the common biological filter.Two stage BAF-UV sterilization was studied for the domestic wastewater reuse to industrial cooling water.The results showed that,the effluent concentration of COD≤60mg/l,ammonia nitrogen≤5mg/l and coliforms≤2000MPN/l.A small Wastewater Treatment Plant of 3×104m3/d was designed with the technology of two stage BAF,the investment and operation cost were also analyzed.

Abstract:The macroporous carrier FPUFS and special microorganisms(B350) were used in a biological aerated filter(BAF) to form a Gaia-BAF(G-BAF) and treat polluted river water.The system was continuously operated for 93 days at different hydraulic retention time(HRT).In the later experimental stage,when HRT is 2 h,the average removal rates of turbidity,CODMn,NH+4-N and TP are 93.4%,55.6%,95.8% and 71.5% respectively.The effluent quality can reach the grade Ⅲ of Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water(GB 3838-2002).The results of ESEM and GC/MS show that there are lots of cocci,bacilli,protozoan and metazoan species immobilized on the surface of carriers,which can enhance the removal effect of nitrogen,phosphorus and refractory organic compounds.

Abstract:Blast furnace dust (BFD) is a solid waste containing iron and carbon produced during iron and steel smelting, and will cause serious pollution to the environment if safe disposal cannot guaranteed. In this study, a novel filter (BFD-filler) was prepared using BFD and applied to treat domestic wastewater in biological aerated filter (BAF). The operation optimization of the reactor and the mechanism of BAF enhancement by inner-electrolysis were investigated. The results showed that the removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH 4 + -N by BFD-BAF were 95.93 % and 96.96 %. This is 26.38 % and 23.16 % higher than the conventional process and the start-up time is reduced by 13.3 %. The iron ions produced during the inner-electrolysis stimulated the growth and metabolism of microorganisms and could promote the stability of biofilm. The addition of BFD-filler affected the bacterial community of microorganisms in BAF and enhanced the bacterial abundance and specificity. Therefore, BFD-filler is suitable as a carrier for microbial attachment and immobilization and has great potential for application in BAF.

Abstract:Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) technology is considered promising, but many aspects are being studied and developed to increase system reliability. In this regard, the research assessed the performance of a conventional AGS (R1) sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system compared to a new AGS design through the inclusion of a biological filter (BF) compartment in the upper zone (R2), treating municipal wastewater. BF insertion in R2 improved total nitrogen removal (> 85 %) and effluent clarification. Effluent total suspended solids (TSS) average values of 44.1 and 17.1 mg/L were found for R1 and R2, respectively. Sludge production was evaluated, and the yield coefficient (Y) and sludge concentration were different in the two reactors. The new system (R2) can be an interesting alternative to improve some aspects of conventional AGS reactors, such as denitrification and nitrite accumulation, effluent TSS concentration, and system reliability increase during periods of instability and granules breakage.
Mature Landfill Leachate Treatment with a Process Based on BAF

Abstract:Treatment of mature landfill leachate with a process based on biological aerated filter(BAF)was assessed at both small scale and full scale experiments.Comparison was made in the laboratory between BAF and the conventional bio-treatment process.BAF was 20% more efficient than the conventional one in COD removal.A combined full-scale process based on BAF {anaerobic+BAF+membrane bioreactor(MBR)+reverse osmosis(RO)} was employed to treat mature leachate from a landfill located in Shenzhen.The BAF unit removed COD and ammonia-nitrogen by 31% and 94.2%,respectively.The biotreatment part(including BAF and MBR)contributes for above 70% removal of copper and zinc ions,and less than 50% of nickel,chrome and lead ions.The RO unit exhibits higher removal capacity for heavy metals than the biotreatment units.Using BAF and MBR as the RO pretreatment ensures the ongoing biodegradation of the pollutants and the prolonged performance of the RO membrane.Organic pollutants in influent,final effluent and in effluents from BAF and MBR were also analyzed to further understand the biodegradation mechanism of trace organic pollutants.

Abstract:The biggest characteristic of the biological aerated filter (BAF) is using a kind of granular media. The research results show that the performance of the brewery wastewater treatment with BAF is excellent. When COD volumetric loading is 10kg/(m 3 · d), under the hydraulic rate of 0. 8m/h, 1.4m/h and 2.5m/h, the COD concentration of effluent is below 59mg/L, 82mg/L and 51mg/L respectively, and the BOD 5 concentration of effluent is below 21mg/L, 38mg/L and 24mg/L when BOD 5 loading is 6kg/(m 3 · d). This research also get the conclusion that the effluent COD concentration increases linearly with the organic load.
