Abstract:Determining the maximal separation between sensitivity and block sensitivity of Boolean functions is of interest for computational complexity theory. We construct a sequence of Boolean functions with bs(f) = 1/2 s(f)^2 + 1/2 s(f). The best known separation previously was bs(f) = 1/2 s(f)^2 due to Rubinstein. We also report results of computer search for functions with at most 12 variables.

Abstract:Sensitivity, certificate complexity and block sensitivity are widely used Boolean function complexity measures. A longstanding open problem, proposed by Nisan and Szegedy, is whether sensitivity and block sensitivity are polynomially related. Motivated by the constructions of functions which achieve the largest known separations, we study the relation between 1-certificate complexity and 0-sensitivity and 0-block sensitivity. Previously the best known lower bound was $C_1(f)\geq \frac{bs_0(f)}{2 s_0(f)}$, achieved by Kenyon and Kutin. We improve this to $C_1(f)\geq \frac{3 bs_0(f)}{2 s_0(f)}$. While this improvement is only by a constant factor, this is quite important, as it precludes achieving a superquadratic separation between $bs(f)$ and $s(f)$ by iterating functions which reach this bound. In addition, this bound is tight, as it matches the construction of Ambainis and Sun up to an additive constant.

Abstract:Sensitivity \cite{CD82,CDR86} and block sensitivity \cite{Nisan91} are two important complexity measures of Boolean functions. A longstanding open problem in decision tree complexity, the "Sensitivity versus Block Sensitivity" question, proposed by Nisan and Szegedy \cite{Nisan94} in 1992, is whether these two complexity measures are polynomially related, i.e., whether $bs(f)=O(s(f)^{O(1)})$. We prove an new upper bound on block sensitivity in terms of sensitivity: $bs(f) \leq 2^{s(f)-1} s(f)$. Previously, the best upper bound on block sensitivity was $bs(f) \leq (\frac{e}{\sqrt{2\pi}}) e^{s(f)} \sqrt{s(f)}$ by Kenyon and Kutin \cite{KK}. We also prove that if $\min\{s_0(f),s_1(f)\}$ is a constant, then sensitivity and block sensitivity are linearly related, i.e. $bs(f)=O(s(f))$.

Abstract:Block sensitivity (bs(f)), certificate complexity (C(f)) and fractional certificate complexity (C*(f)) are three fundamental combinatorial measures of complexity of a boolean function f. It has long been known that bs(f) ≤ C*(f) ≤ C(f) = O(bs(f)2). We provide an infinite family of examples for which C(f) grows quadratically in C*(f) (and also bs(f)) giving optimal separations between these measures. Previously the biggest separation known was \documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$C(f) = C*(f)^{\log _{4,5} 5}$$\end{document}. We also give a family of examples for which C*(f)= Ω (bs(f)3/2).These examples are obtained by composing boolean functions in various ways. Here the composition fog of f with g is obtained by substituting for each variable of f a copy of g on disjoint sets of variables. To construct and analyse these examples we systematically investigate the behaviour under function composition of these measures and also the sensitivity measure s(f). The measures s(f), C(f) and C*(f) behave nicely under composition: they are submultiplicative (where measure m is submultiplicative if m(fog) ≤ m(f)m(g)) with equality holding under some fairly general conditions. The measure bs(f) is qualitatively different: it is not submultiplicative. This qualitative difference was not noticed in the previous literature and we correct some errors that appeared in previous papers. We define the composition limit of a measure m at function f, mlim(f) to be the limit as k grows of m(f(k))1/k, where f(k) is the iterated composition of f with itself k-times. For any function f we show that bslim(f) = (C*)lim(f) and characterize slim(f); (C*)lim(f), and Clim(f) in terms of the largest eigenvalue of a certain set of 2×2 matrices associated with f.

Relations between monotone complexity measures based on decision tree complexity

Abstract:In a recent result, Knop, Lovett, McGuire and Yuan (STOC 2021) proved the log-rank conjecture for communication complexity, up to log n factor, for any Boolean function composed with AND function as the inner gadget. One of the main tools in this result was the relationship between monotone analogues of well-studied Boolean complexity measures like block sensitivity and certificate complexity. The relationship between the standard measures has been a long line of research, with a landmark result by Huang (Annals of Mathematics 2019), finally showing that sensitivity is polynomially related to all other standard measures. In this article, we study the monotone analogues of standard measures like block sensitivity (mbs(f)), certificate complexity (MCC(f)) and fractional block sensitivity (fmbs(f)); and study the relationship between these measures given their connection with AND-decision tree and sparsity of a Boolean function. We show the following results: 1) Given a Boolean function $f : \{0, 1\}^{n} \rightarrow \{0, 1\}$, the ratio $fmbs(f^l )/mbs(f^l )$ is bounded by a function of n (and not l). A similar result was known for the corresponding standard measures (Tal, ITCS 2013). This result allows us to extend any upper bound by a well behaved measure on monotone block sensitivity to monotone fractional block sensitivity. 2) The question of the best possible upper bound on monotone block sensitivity by the logarithm of sparsity is equivalent to the natural question of best upper bound by degree on sensitivity. One side of this relationship was used in the proof by Knop, Lovett, McGuire and Yuan (STOC 2021). 3) For two natural classes of functions, symmetric and monotone, hitting set complexity (MCC) is equal to monotone sensitivity.

Abstract:For an inequality system defined by an infinite family of proper lower semicontinuous convex functions in normed linear space, we consider the Farkas-Minkowski (FM for short) type qualification and the basic constraint qualification (BCQ for short). By employing a new approach based on some new results established here on the SECQ (sum of epigraphs constraint qualification) for families of closed convex sets, some sufficient conditions involving further relaxing Slater type conditions for ensuring the FM qualification are provided. As applications, new sufficient conditions for ensuring the BCQ are given. These results significantly improve the corresponding ones in [C. Li and K. F. Ng, SIAM T. Optim., 15 (2005), pp. 488-512] and [C. Li, X. P. Zhao, and Y. H. Hu, SIAM J. Optim., 23 (2013), pp. 2208-2230], and they are obtained without the key continuity assumption on the sup-function of the inequality system which the previous works depend heavily on. Some examples are also presented to illustrate the applicability of our results.

Abstract:We show that there exists a Boolean function $F$ which observes the following separations among deterministic query complexity $(D(F))$, randomized zero error query complexity $(R_0(F))$ and randomized one-sided error query complexity $(R_1(F))$: $R_1(F) = \widetilde{O}(\sqrt{D(F)})$ and $R_0(F)=\widetilde{O}(D(F))^{3/4}$. This refutes the conjecture made by Saks and Wigderson that for any Boolean function $f$, $R_0(f)=\Omega({D(f)})^{0.753..}$. This also shows widest separation between $R_1(f)$ and $D(f)$ for any Boolean function. The function $F$ was defined by G{\"{o}}{\"{o}}s, Pitassi and Watson who studied it for showing a separation between deterministic decision tree complexity and unambiguous non-deterministic decision tree complexity. Independently of us, Ambainis et al proved that different variants of the function $F$ certify optimal (quadratic) separation between $D(f)$ and $R_0(f)$, and polynomial separation between $R_0(f)$ and $R_1(f)$. Viewed as separation results, our results are subsumed by those of Ambainis et al. However, while the functions considerd in the work of Ambainis et al are different variants of $F$, we work with the original function $F$ itself.

Abstract:The study of complexity measures of Boolean functions led Nisan and Szegedy to state the sensitivity conjecture in 1994, claiming a polynomial relation between degree and sensitivity. This problem remained unsolved until 2019, when Huang proved the conjecture via an equivalent graph theoretical reformulation due to Gotsman and Linial. We study $m$-ary functions, i.e., functions $f: T^n \rightarrow T$ where $T\subseteq \mathbb{C}$ is a finite alphabet of cardinality $|T| = m $ and extend the notions of degree $\mathrm{deg}(f)$ and sensitivity $s(f)$ to $m$-ary functions and show $s(f)\in O(\mathrm{deg}(f)^2)$. This generalizes results of Nisan and Szegedy. Conversely, we introduce the $m$-ary sensitivity conjecture, claiming a polynomial upper bound for $\mathrm{deg}(f)$ in terms of $s(f)$. Analogously to results of Gotsman and Linial, we provide a formulation of the conjecture in terms of imbalanced partitions of Hamming graphs into low degree subgraphs. Combining this with ideas of Chung, Füredi, Graham and Seymour, we show that for any prime $p$ the bound in the $p$-ary sensitivity conjecture has to be at least quadratic: there exist $p$-ary functions $f$ of arbitrarily large degree and $\mathrm{deg}(f)\in \Omega(s(f)^2)$.

Abstract:In this paper, the perturbation and subproper splittings for the generalized inverse AT,S(2), the unique matrix X such that XAX=X,R(X)=T and N(X)=S, are considered. We present lower and upper bounds for the perturbation of AT,S(2). Convergence of subproper splittings for computing the special solution AT,S(2)b of restricted rectangular linear system Ax=b, x∈T, are studied. For the solution AT,S(2)b we develop a characterization. Therefore, we give a unified treatment of the related problems considered in literature by Ben-Israel, Berman, Hanke, Neumann, Plemmons, etc.

The technique that we use is to show that the total influence of functions in one class is less than the total influence of functions in the other class. In particular, we show (almost) separation of several classes of Boolean functions which have been studied in the coding theory and cryptography from classes which have been studied in combinatorics and complexity theory.

Abstract:This paper proposes to solve the indeterminacy problem of blind source separation (BSS) in the case that long duration mixture signals are separated and processed block by block in time domain. For general BSS problems, there exist inherent permutation and scaling ambiguities between separations and sources. However, when continuously mixed signals are separated independently in each adjacent blocks, the indeterminacies in adjacent blocks differ from each other. When tying the separations in each block together, the whole recovered signals are not correct estimations of sources. To solve this problem, an effective approach has been proposed by overlapping adjacent blocks partially in time domain and using the associativity between separated components of overlapping signals to clean out these indeterminacies of block BSS. Inspired from this approach, an improved method is put forward in this paper. This new method shows better performance than similar and previous ones in terms of computational speed, especially when the number of sources and blocks is large. Computer simulations are performed to verify the performance of this improved method.

Abstract:Boolean functions are important primitives in different domains of cryptology, complexity and coding theory. In this paper, we connect the tools from cryptology and complexity theory in the domain of Boolean functions with low polynomial degree and high sensitivity. It is well known that the polynomial degree of of a Boolean function and its resiliency are directly connected. Using this connection we analyze the polynomial degree-sensitivity values through the lens of resiliency, demonstrating existence and non-existence results of functions with low polynomial degree and high sensitivity on small number of variables (upto 10). In this process, borrowing an idea from complexity theory, we show that one can implement resilient Boolean functions on a large number of variables with linear size and logarithmic depth. Finally, we extend the notion of sensitivity to higher order and note that the existing construction idea of Nisan and Szegedy (1994) can provide only constant higher order sensitivity when aiming for polynomial degree of $n-\omega(1)$. In this direction, we present a construction with low ($n-\omega(1)$) polynomial degree and super-constant $\omega(1)$ order sensitivity exploiting Maiorana-McFarland constructions, that we borrow from construction of resilient functions. The questions we raise identify novel combinatorial problems in the domain of Boolean functions.

Almost Symmetric Schur Functions

Abstract:We introduce and study a generalization $s_{(\mu|\lambda)}$ of the Schur functions called the almost symmetric Schur functions. These functions simultaneously generalize the finite variable key polynomials and the infinite variable Schur functions. They form a homogeneous basis for the space of almost symmetric functions and are defined using a family of recurrences involving the isobaric divided difference operators and limits of Weyl symmetrization operators. The $s_{(\mu|\lambda)}$ are the $q=t=0$ specialization of the stable limit non-symmetric Macdonald functions $\widetilde{E}_{(\mu|\lambda)}$ defined by the author in previous work. We find a combinatorial formula for these functions simultaneously generalizing well known formulas for the Schur functions and the key polynomials. Further, we prove positivity results for the coefficients of the almost symmetric Schur functions expanded into the monomial basis and into the monomial-Schur basis of the space of almost symmetric functions. The latter positivity result follows after realizing the almost symmetric Schur functions $s_{(\mu|\lambda)}$ as limits of characters of representations of parabolic subgroups in type $GL.$

Abstract:The techniques of Blind Separation of Sources (BSS) are used in many Signal Processing applications in which the data sampled by sensors are a mixture of signals from different sources, and the goal is to obtain an estimation of the sources from the mixtures. This work shows a new method for blind separation of sources, based on geometrical considerations concerning the observation space. This new method is applied to a mixture of several several sources and it obtains the estimated coefficients of the unknown mixture matrix A and separates the unknown sources. Following an introduction, we present a brief abstract of previous work on geometric ICA by our two groups, the principles of the new method and a description of the algorithm followed by some speed enhancements. Finally, we illustrate with simulations of several source distributions how the algorithm performs.

Abstract:We investigate an extension of Schauder's theorem by studying the relationship between various $s$-numbers of an operator $T$ and its adjoint $T^*$. We have three main results. First, we present a new proof that the approximation number of $T$ and $T^*$ are equal for compact operators. Second, for non-compact, bounded linear operators from $X$ to $Y$, we obtain a relationship between certain $s$-numbers of $T$ and $T^*$ under natural conditions on $X$ and $Y$. Lastly, for non-compact operators that are compact with respect to certain approximation schemes, we prove results by comparing the degree of compactness of $T$ with that of its adjoint $T^*$.

Abstract:This paper considers eliminating ambiguities of blind source separation (BSS) when continuous mixtures of source signals are split in time and processed block by block. Due to the inherent permutation and scaling ambiguities of BSS, the original sources can not be recovered successfully when the separated components in each block are concatenated together. For this block BSS case, a new approach is proposed by overlapping adjacent mixture block partially and utilizing the correlation between overlapping signals in time domain. On the one hand, this approach is the extension of previous separation and reconstruction method, in which case the length of overlapping signals is generalized from half the length of signal block to any ratio. On the other hand, this new method is much more efficient than the previously original one in terms of computational speed by simplifying the correlation computation of overlapping signals, which is significantly striking when the sample size of overlapping signals and the number of sources and blcoks are large. Simulations are presented to validate the effectiveness and performance of this new method.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a supersymmetric version of block-symmetric polynomials on a Banach space of two-sided absolutely summing series of vectors in Cs for some positive integer s>1. We describe some sequences of generators of the algebra of block-supersymmetric polynomials and algebraic relations between the generators for the finite-dimensional case and construct algebraic bases of block-supersymmetric polynomials in the infinite-dimensional case. Furthermore, we propose some consequences for algebras of block-supersymmetric analytic functions of bounded type and their spectra. Finally, we consider some special derivatives in algebras of block-symmetric and block-supersymmetric analytic functions and find related Appell-type sequences of polynomials.

Abstract:The class of six-fermion production processes at e+e- colliders comprises very interesting particle reactions, such as the production of top-quark pairs and of Higgs bosons in the intermediate Higgs mass range, the scattering of massive gauge bosons, and triple gauge-boson production. The Monte Carlo event generator LUSIFER is designed for the analysis of such processes. A few illustrating results obtained with LUSIFER are discussed.
