Abstract:The nature and chlorine reactivity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in reclaimed water from sewage treatment plants (STPs) are quite important for assessing the risk of wastewater reuse. Elucidating relation between DOM and its fractions characterization with different treatment processes is quite important for selection of treatment processes focusing on disinfection by-products (DBPs) control. In this study, four classical STPs in Beijing (A similar to D) with different secondary biological treatment processes but all with flocculation and sand-filtration as advanced treatment process were selected to investigate DBPs formation potentials and DOM characterization variation during these processes and their relation. Chloroform, dichloroacetic acid (TCAA) and dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) dominated among four trihalomethanes (THMs) and nine haloacetic acids (HAAs) formation potentials respectively during chlorination of both secondary and sand-filtration effluents with the order of TCAA > chloroform > DCAA. Both THMs and HAAs formation potentials were positively related with DOC percentage for the hydrophobic fractions in the DOM. The bromine incorporation in THMs was obviously higher than that in HAAs. The especially higher bromine incorporation in D STP was probably due to the higher SUVA value in this STP with SBR as secondary biological treatment process comparing to those in the other three STPs. DOC and bromide removal, SUVA decrease were important elements for selecting secondary treatment process considering DBPs control. Flocculation and sand-filtration performed not well in removing DBPs precursors especially for chloroform and DCAA except for C STP, which had higher hydrophobic fraction percentage removal and molecular weight decreasing during the advanced treatment process. FTIR analysis revealed that flocculation and sand-filtration probably removed more aliphatic structures than aromatic or COO- structures. The absorption ratio of aromatic C=C, COO-/aliphatic CH3 peaks in D STP was the highest among the four STPs, which was consistent with the highest bromine incorporation in this STP.

Abstract:Various advanced treatment processes including ultrafiltration (UF), ozonation, enhanced coagulation, and biological aerated filter (BAF) have been applied to reduce dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the secondary effluent of municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWTPs). In this study, DOM were characterized and the relationship between DOM characteristics and disinfection by-products (DBPs) generation was investigated systematically. Results showed that BAF and ozonation processes could significantly affect DOM characteristics in the treated effluents and the following DBP generation. UF and enhanced coagulation reduced the production of DBPs by removing large molecular hydrophobic organics. The removal of low molecule DOM by BAF resulted in a 67.6% reduction in trihalomethanes (THMs) production. Ozonation could oxidize large hydrophobic DOM into small hydrophilic molecules containing aldehyde and ketone groups, leading to 54% increase of halogenated aldehydes (HALs) and halogenated ketones (HKs). Humic acid (HA) was the main organic type in DOM and important precursor for THMs and dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) formation. The generation of trichloromethane (TCM) showed a significant positive correlation ( R 2 = 0.987) with the specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA). Large molecule hydrophobic DOM devoted the most to the formation of carbonaceous disinfection by-products and –N content was an important factor affecting the generation of nitrogenous disinfection by-products. These results are important for the optimization of advanced treatment process in MWTPs, and controlling DBPs should consider the removal of low MW hydrophobic DOM and the reduction of SUVA.

Abstract:The removal of trihalomethanes (THMs) precursor and natural organic matter (NOM) by an integrated process of ozonation and biological granular activated carbon filtration (BGAC) as a deep water treatment process was investigated in pilot-scale tests. A comparison is also made with granular activated carbon filtration (GAC). The characteristics of the THMs precursor and the THMs formation potential (THMFP) were investigated by resin adsorption and ultrafiltration. The results show that the integrated process of ozonation and BGAC (O(3)/BGAC) is obviously superior to GAC for the removal of the THMs precursor because a considerable synergetic effect occurs between the ozonation and the BGAC. Although ozonation can limitedly remove dissolved organic carbon (DOC), it can cut down the molecular weight of the NOM, change its polarity, decrease the THMFP, and obviously enhance the efficiency of the BGAC. The BGAC could efficiently remove the hydrophobic base (HoB), hydrophobic neutral (HoN), weakly hydrophobic acid (WHOA), and low molecular weight fraction DOC that was produced in the optimized ozonation process. However, the BGAC stage should be carefully controlled to avoid the leakage of microbes and/or the products of metabolism because it has a high risk for producing THMs in following chlorination process. Abstract:Since the variation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is complicated in the aquatic environment and water treatment processes, adverse effects on human and water quality may be triggered. Nowadays, more drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) begin using pretreatment and advanced treatment processes for removing refractory DOM to pursue high-quality drinking water, including preozonation, and combined ozonation and biological activated carbon (BAC) treatment. The combination of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer and fluorescence spectroscopy could comprehensively unveil the DOM composition and characteristics in water treatments. This study aims to provide information on the molecular and spectroscopic characteristics of DOM in a DWTP with pretreatments and advanced treatment processes and summarize the removal efficiency of different treatment processes on DOM. Results showed that the removal rate of low-molecular-weight acids (LMW-acids) by BAC was as high as 98 %, reflecting the synergistic effect of ozonation/BAC unit. Pre-ozonation enhanced coagulation process had a good removal effect on CHONS. The diversity of DOM increased and the relative abundance of DOM intensity was reduced in preozonation/coagulation/sedimentation and O 3 /BAC units. The preozonation-coagulation/sedimentation unit reduced the aromaticity or unsaturation of DOM while the advanced treatment process had a higher removal rate of fluorescent components.

Abstract:XAD-8 resin isolation of organic matter in water was used to divide organic matter into the hydrophobic and hydrophilic fractions. A pilot plant was used to investigate the change in both fractions during conventional and advanced treatment processes. The treatment of hydrophobic organics (HPO), rather than hydrophilic organicas (HPI), should carry greater emphasis due to HPO's higher trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) and haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP). The removal of hydrophobic matter and its transmission into hydrophilic matter reduced ultimate DBP yield during the disinfection process. The results showed that sand filtration, ozonation, and biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration had distinct influences on the removal of both organic fractions. Additionally, the combination of processes changed the organic fraction proportions present during treatment. The use of ozonation and BAC maximized organic matter removal efficiency, especially for the hydrophobic fraction. In sum, the combination of pre-ozonation, conventional treatment, and O-3-BAC removed 48% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), 60% of HPO, 30% of HPI, 63% of THMFP, and 85% of HAAFP. The use of conventional treatment and O-3-BAC without pre-ozonation had a comparable performance, removing 51% of DOC, 56% of HPO, 45% of HPI, 61% of THMFP, and 72% of HAAFP. The effectiveness of this analysis method indicated that resin isolation and fractionation should be standardized as an applicable test to help assess water treatment process efficiency.

Abstract:The reductions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and disinfection byproduct precursors in four full-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) (Liaoning Province, China) where different biological treatment processes were employed in winter were investigated. The total removal efficiencies of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ultraviolet light at 254 nm (UV-254), trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP), and haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP) were in the range of 70.3-76.0%, 49.6-57.3%, 54.4-65.0%, and 53.7-63.8% in the four WWTPs, respectively. The biological treatment was the predominant process responsible for the removal of DOC, THMFP, and HAAFP in WWTPs. Differences in the reduction of UV-254 were not significant (p > 0.05) among biochemical reaction pool, secondary sedimentation tank, and disinfection tank. Biological aerated filter and suspended carrier activated sludge processes achieved higher DOM removal than the conventional active sludge and anaerobic-anoxic-oxic processes. Hydrophobic neutral and hydrophilic fraction were removed to a higher degree through biological treatment than the other three DOM fractions. HAAFP removal was more efficient than THMFP reduction during biological treatment. During primary treatment, fluorescent materials in secondary sedimentation tanks were preferentially removed, as compared to the bulk DOM. Humic-like fluorescent compounds were not readily eliminated during biological treatment. The fluorescent materials were more susceptible to chlorine than nonfluorescent compounds.
Effects of dissolved organic matter removal and molecular transformation in different water treatment processes on formation of disinfection byproducts

Abstract:Alterations in molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during water treatments can influence the composition and toxicity of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in subsequent chlorination disinfection process. In this study, the impacts of DOM composition after various water treatment techniques (coagulation, adsorption, nanofiltration, biological aerated filter (BAF), and their integrated processes) on the generation mechanisms of DBPs were comprehensively explored by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) in combination with GC-MS and LC-MS analysis. The results indicated that coagulation preferentially removed unsaturated (low H/C) and oxidized (high O/C) compounds, whereas adsorption was prone to remove the reduced (low O/C) component that was more reactive with chlorine, leading to lower yields (μg DBP/mg DOC) of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) during subsequent chlorination. The coagulation-adsorption technique exhibited a relatively high removal of both known and unknown DBPs, demonstrating that coagulation and adsorption were complementary for DOM removal at the molecular level. Nanofiltration selectively removed molecules with relatively high O/C, however, those with very low O/C that were more reactive with chlorine could pass through the nanofiltration membrane, resulting in the highest yields of THMs and HAAs. Although BAF was inefficient in removing DBPs precursors, it could convert molecules with low degree of oxidation and unsaturation into highly oxidized and unsaturated ones, thereby significantly enhancing the removal of DBPs precursors in the subsequent coagulation-adsorption process. These findings are instrumental in developing and selecting more effective techniques to minimize the formation of DBPs in water treatment.
Removal effect of trihalomethanes (THMs) and halogenated acetic acids (HAAs) precursors in reclaimed water by polyaluminum chloride (PACl) coagulation

Abstract:This study analyzed the removal effect of various doses of polyaluminum chloride (PACI) on wastewater treatment plants at pH 7. The sewage plant's secondary effluent organic matter (EfOM) separates into four components: hydrophobic base (HOB), hydrophilic (HI), hydrophobic acid (HOA), and hydrophobic neutral (HON). The removal effect for various forms of organic waste is optimum at 16 mg/L and that halogenated acetic acids (HAAs) and trihalomethanes (THMs) are formed simultaneously. After PACI treatment, hydrophobic organic compounds were converted to humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA), soluble microbial products (SMPs), and other HI organic compounds, increasing the amount of HAAs produced by HI fractions. Removal rate of hydrophobic organic compounds, particularly HON, is 92.8% when using PAC. Moreover, after EfOM coagulation, most HAAs are trichloroacetic acid (TCAA), followed by bromochloroacetic acid (BCAA) and bromodichloroacetic acid (BDCAA). Only HOB can produce monochloroacetic acid (MCAA), whereas HA and SMPs with HOA are primary components of dichloroacetic acid (DCAA). The toughest removable byproduct of THMs is CHBr3, and after condensation of each THM component, only HOA and HON produce CHBr3, while HI produces only a minimal quantity of CHBrCl2 and CHCl3.This finding is critical for understanding how disinfection byproducts are produced after chlorinating EfOM.
Investigation into the content and formation of trihalomethanes and molecular change of dissolved organic matter from a typical water plant in south China

Abstract:Trihalomethanes (THMs) are a class of disinfection by-products that were proved to have adverse effects to human health. Investigation into its content change and molecular composition variation of its main precursor, which is believed to be dissolved organic matter (DOM) during water purification process, can help understand the formation mechanism of THMs and optimize the processes in drinking water treatment plant (DWTP). This is of great significance to ensure the safety of urban water supply. In this study, detailed changes of THMs' content and formation potential were determined during the water purification process in summer and winter at a typical DWTP in south China. Specific molecular composition changes of DOM were also characterized by ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry, to comprehensively study its correlation with the formation of THMs in different water processing units and seasons. The result showed that chlorination will cause drastic changes of water quality and a sharp increase in the concentration of THMs (18.7 times in summer and 13.9 times in winter). Molecular-level characterization of DOM indicates that a range of lignin-like substance with lower O/C (< 0.5) and H/C (< 1.25) vanished and considerable amount of protein-like and tannins-like substance with higher H/C (> 1.25) and O/C (> 0.5) was formed after chlorination. Analysis of Cl-containing products demonstrated that a bulk of CHOCl1 and CHOCl2 compounds with moderate molecular weights were formed in both winter and summer. However, the newly formed CHOCl1 molecules showed a relatively higher mass weight in summer (> 500 Da) compared to winter (300-500 Da). Seasonal differences also emerged in the result of correlation between the trihalomethanes formation potential and total organic carbon. The correlation coefficient in summer (0.500) was lower than that in winter (0.843). The results suggested that the exhaustive reaction and contribution of DOM to THMs may vary in different seasons.
Removal of Effluent Dissolved Organic Matter of Different Molecular Sizes by Advanced Treatments and Soil Infiltration

Abstract:Removal of municipal effluent-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) of various apparent molecular weights (AMWs) was compared among ozonation, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, and magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) resin coagulation. These advanced technologies were applied as pretreatments for soil aquifer treatment (SAT). Soil aquifer treatment alone removed 20 to 30% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV254. Soil aquifer treatment effectively removed 100% and 76% of DOM with AMWs of 21.3 to 31.6 kDa and 0.4 to 1.0 kDa, respectively. With pretreatments of ozonation, MIEX resin coagulation and nanofiltration, substantially higher removals (40 to 75%) were achieved for DOC and UV254. The removal efficiency of the entire system decreased as nanofiltration-SAT > ozonation-SAT > MIEX-SAT > ultrafiltration-SAT, which is positively related to the removal efficiency for medium AMW (1.8 to 7.7 kDa, mainly humic substances) DOM during pretreatments. Different pretreatments should, therefore, be chosen in accordance with the water quality of feed water and water products and SAT removal efficiency.
Molecular transformation of dissolved organic matter and the formation of disinfection byproducts in full-scale surface water treatment processes

Abstract:Dissolved organic matters (DOM) have important effects on the performance of surface water treatment processes and may convert into disinfection by-products (DBPs) during disinfection. In this work, the transformation of DOM and the chlorinated DBPs (Cl-DBPs) formation in two different full-scale surface water treatment processes (process 1: prechlorination-coagulation-precipitation-filtration; process 2: coagulation-precipitation-post-disinfection-filtration) were comparatively investigated at molecular scale. The results showed that coagulation preferentially removed unsaturated (H/C 17) and oxidized (O/C > 0.5) compounds containing more carboxyl groups. Therefore, prechlorination produced more Cl-DBPs with H/C 0.5 than post-disinfection. However, the algal in the influent produced many reduced molecules (O/C < 0.5) without prechlorination, and these compounds were more reactive with disinfectants. Sand filtration was ineffective in DOM removal, while microorganisms in the filter produced high molecular weight (MW) substances that were involved in the Cl-DBPs formation, causing the generation of higher MW Cl-DBPs under post-disinfection. Furthermore, the CHO molecules with high O atom number and the CHON molecules containing one N atom were the main Cl-DBPs precursors in both surface water treatment processes. In consideration of the putative Cl-DBPs precursors and their reaction pathways, the precursors with higher unsaturation degree and aromaticity were prone to produce Cl-DBPs through addition reactions, while that with higher saturation degree tended to form Cl-DBPs through substitution reactions. These findings are useful to optimize the treatment processes to ensure the safety of water quality.

Disinfection Characteristics of the Dissolved Organic Fractions at Several Stages of A Conventional Drinking Water Treatment Plant in Southern China

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) influences many aspects of drinking water treatment, including the formation of harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs) when disinfectants are applied. DOM was isolated and fractionated using membrane ultra-filtration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) to eight individual fractions based on molecular weight cut-offs from a conventional surface water treatment plant (WTP) in Guangzhou of PR China. Molecular weights of these eight fractions were further calibrated using high performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) and they ranged from 0.36 to 182.6 kDa. Fractions with molecular weight <0.80 kDa obtained by YC-05 UF membrane and RO were the major ones in all four stages of the water treatment processes; both ZM-500 and YM-100 membranes showed the highest removal efficiency when coupling with conventional coagulation and sedimentation processes. The elemental analysis showed that YC-05 fraction had greater polarity and aromaticity than any of the others. Furthermore, disinfection characteristics and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) were determined for all DOM fractions obtained in this study. YC-05 fraction was the major precursor for trihalomethane (THMs) formation among the samples tested and could be removed effectively by particulate activated carbon (PAC) adsorption. RO fraction could not be removed by PAC adsorption and, as a result, consumed more chlorine in the disinfection process. The results suggested that advanced drinking water treatment should focus on the removal of low molecular weight DOM in the source water.

Abstract:Introduction There is a new generation ofnovel candidate vaccines against tuberculosis under development. But the hurdles (clinical, political and economic) that must be overcome before there can be a proper clinical appraisal of any one of them are daunting. The tasks that we require new vaccines to successfully accomplish immunologically are neither simple nor yet understood. They can be simply stated: we want vaccines to protect against future new infection (prevention) and to treat existing disease (therapy) so that there is less pathology, fewer relapses and fewer anti-mycobacterial drugs are needed. Less obviously, we would also like a vaccine to eliminate the dormant persistent M tuberculosis infection that produces most of the active disease currently seen in formerly high prevalence countries such as those of the West. However, for both prevention and therapy we need vaccines to selectively promote beneficial and not harmful kinds of immune response and our knowledge ofhow to do this, in anything other than an empirical fashion, is still only partial. The huge differences in protective efficacy of BCG against adult pulmonary tuberculosis in different parts ofthe world still await proper explanation. Vaccination of adolescents gives protection that ranges from high (eg. almost 80% in the UK) to zero (eg. in South India). The protective effect in the UK becomes undetectable 15 years later. It is generally believed that environmental mycobacteria interfere with the efficacy of BCG, both in man and in cattle. BCG vaccination at birth, before sensitisation to other mycobacteria, confers substantial protection against the essentially non-infectious childhood forms of tuberculosis. However, it is not clear that protection following vaccination at birth extends to the infectious pulmonary form seen in adults. Neither is it clear if sensitisation by the environment can confer full protection against pulmonary tuberculosis (equal to the maximum effect ofBCG). This would leave no room for BCG to add anything. Alternatively, the immune system may become subverted so that protective responses can no longer be evoked by BeG. The distinction is important because it could profoundly affect the whole approach to finding something better than BCG.
Characteristics and Chlorinated Disinfection By-products Formation Potential of Dissolved Organic Matter Fractions in Treated Wastewater

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) from a biological treated wastewater of municipal wastewater treated plant was isolated and fractionated using resin adsorption into four different fractions. These fractions are operationally categorized as hydrophilic substances (HIS), hydrophobic acids (HOA), hydrophobic neutrals (HON), and hydrophobic bases (HOB). The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and specific UV absorbance, characteristics of three dimensional excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3DEEM) and disinfection byproducts formation potential of each fraction was investigated in this paper. The results showed that HIS and HOA were the main fractions and occupied 33% and 30% of DOC in the treated wastewater sample, respectively. The fraction of HIS contained more humus, which were predominately microbially derived, while the fraction of HOA contained more aromatic proteins and soluble microbial products by the analysis of 3DEEM. The chlorinated trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) of HIS fraction was 630.4 microg x L(-1) and occupied 73.7% of that formed in wastewater sample. The chlorinated haloacetic acids formation potential (HAAFP) of HIS and HOA fractions were 644.6 microg x L(-1) and 123.2 microg x L(-1), which was found to be the most reactive precursor in the fractions of treated wastewater to the disinfection by-products formation.

Abstract:<p>The performances of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of refractory dissolved organic matter (DOM) are significantly different due to the various degradation mechanisms and competitive interactions between DOM and AOPs. This research traced the variation and removal of DOM components in tannery wastewater (TW) during conventional treatment, which includes coagulation, hydrolytic acidification/anoxic (H/A), and anaerobic/aerobic (A/O) stages. Electrochemical oxidation (EO) and ozone oxidation (OO) AOPs were conducted to treat a conventional treatment effluent based on selective oxidation and performance. The results demonstrated that the refractory DOM of the secondary effluent of the TW was mainly the hydrophilic neutrals (HIN) fraction (44.1%), which consisted of fatty acids and aliphatic compounds, and the hydrophobic acids (HOA) fraction (28.5%), which included the carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAMs) and complex polycyclic aromatic structures. During the conventional treatment, lower molecular weight (MW) aliphatic and protein substances were preferentially removed by the H/A stage, while the A/O stage more completely eliminated hydrophobic aromatic substances of a lower MW. However, humus-like substances increased in both scenarios. With respect to the two AOPs, OO preferentially removed substances with a lower MW, and the HOA fraction converting to hydrophilic humus-like substances followed with more derived by-products. Comparing to OO, EO performed better on the removal of aromatic compounds, especially the humus-like substances (polycyclic aromatic and CRAM-like substances) in HOA fraction, therefore significantly improved the biodegradability of the effluent. The results indicate that EO has a better selectivity for humus-like substances and is suitable for the treatment of refractory DOM containing chloride.</p>

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is reported to be a precursor to disinfection by-products (DBPs), which have adverse effects on human health. Therefore, it is crucial to effectively remove DOM before water disinfection. Characteristics of DOM and DBPs formation during advanced treatment processes including coagulation, adsorption, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and ozone (O3) oxidation in municipal secondary effluent were investigated in this research. DOM was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEM), and Orbitrap mass spectrometry (Orbitrap MS). Moreover, DBPs formation potential under different advanced treatment processes was also discussed. FTIR results indicated that various functional groups existing in DOM may react with the disinfectant to form toxic DBPs. EEM analysis indicated that DOM in all water samples was dominated by soluble microbial product-like (SMPs) and humic acid-like (HA) substances. The municipal secondary effluent was abundant with DOM and rich in carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms, contained a certain dosage of phosphorus and sulfur atoms, and the highest proportion is lignin. Most of the precursors (CHO features) had positive double bond equivalent subtracted oxygen per carbon [(DBE-O)/C] and negative carbon oxidation state (Cos) in all four different advanced treatment processes. DBPs formation potential (DBPFP) of coagulation, adsorption, UV irradiation, and O3 oxidation advanced treatment processes were 487 μg L-1, 586 μg L-1, 597 μg L-1, and 308 μg L-1, respectively. And the DBPs precursors removal efficiency of coagulation, adsorption, UV irradiation, and O3 oxidation advanced treatment processes were 50.8%, 40.8%, 39.8%, and 69.0%, respectively. This study provides in-depth insights into the changes of DOM in municipal secondary effluent at the molecular level and the removal efficiency of DBPs precursors during coagulation, adsorption, UV irradiation, and O3 oxidation advanced treatment processes.

Abstract:Trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) are the most common disinfection byproducts posing human health risks. This study investigated the precursors of THMs and HAAs in filter backwash water (FBW) and sedimentation sludge water (SSW) by the methods of ultrafiltration membranes, synthetic resins and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra. The concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in FBW and SSW ranged from 1.7 to 2.7 mg/L and 2.7 to 5.8 mg/L, respectively. After chlorination, THMs and HAAs ranging from 223 to 608 μg/L and 26 to 110 μg/L were generated in FBW and SSW, respectively. There were more THM precursors than HAAs in FBW and SSW, but the formation of HAAs was often affected by water quality in terms of DOC, specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), etc. High concentrations of bromo-trihalomethanes (Br-THMs) were generated in FBW and SSW, while monochloroacetic acid (MCAA) was the dominant species. The effect of bromide concentration on the formation of total THMs was greater than that of HAAs. Fluorescence analysis revealed that aromatic protein-like compounds were the dominant dissolved organic matter (DOM) in FBW and SSW. The concentrations of THMs and HAAs in the MW < 3 kDa fraction accounted for 58–80% and 62–74% of the whole sample, respectively. Hydrophilic (HPI) organic matter with molecular weight (MW) < 3 kDa was the main precursor of THMs and HAAs in FBW and SSW. Both HPI and hydrophobic (HPO) fractions were proven to play a considerable role in the formation of HAAs. Therefore, the corresponding treatment strategies should be considered to remove low-MW, HPI and HPO organics according to the water quality of FBW and SSW before recycling in order to avoid the formation of THMs and HAAs.

Abstract:Objectives:The objective of this study is to investigate characteristics about removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its fraction for improving operation efficiency in an advanced water treatment plant. Methods:The monitoring of water quality was conducted at five processes such as raw water, pre-oxidation, after sedimentation, post-ozonation, after biological activated carbon (BAC) from July 2020 to August 2021 in advanced water treatment process (AWTP) supplying 180,000m 3 /day. The concentration of DOC (dissolved organic carbon) and number of algae were monitored and LC-OCD was used to fractionate DOC to four species, biopolymer (BP), humic substance (HS), building blocks (BB), and low molecular weights (LMWs). Results and Discussion:The characteristics of raw water showed that the concentration of DOC and the number of algae increased with an increase in water temperature. The portion of BP and HS significantly increased at low and high water temperature, respectively, while BB and LMWs maintained the similar portion. The removal efficiency of DOC in the AWTP was achieved at 59% with each species of BP, HS, BB, and LMWs obtaining removal efficiency of 87%, 65%, 26%, and 52%, respectively. Coagulation/sedimentation/filtration showed removal efficiency of 84%, 56%, 20%, and 18% for BP, HS, BB, and LMWs, respectively, corresponding to their molecular weight. The effect of post-ozonation would be negligible except for BP. In BAC, removal efficiency of 49% and 12% were obtained for LMWs and BB (low molecular weight, respectively. As a result, the BP portion significantly decreased due to high removal efficiency, while BB portion was increased in the final treated water compared to raw water. Conclusion:Most of DOM was removed in coagulation/sedimentation/filtration and BAC, whereas oxidation process such as pre-chlorination, pre-ozonation and post-oxidation did not have an effect on DOM removal. In coagulation/sedimentation/filtration, 84% and 54% of the BP and HS were removed, while BAC removed 49% and 12% of LMWs and BB, respectively. It has been recommended to improve the removal efficiency of BB, which obtained the lowest removal efficiency in AWTP, and to enhance the removal efficiency of LMWs in BAC to inhibit microbial regrowth in the distribution system.
Removal of Natural Organic Matter for Controlling Disinfection By-Products Formation by Enhanced Coagulation: A Case Study

Abstract:Increasingly stringent drinking water standards raise challenges to many drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) currently treating seriously polluted source waters. This plant-scale field study investigates the feasibility and technological strategies for process improvement for the Luwen (LW) DWTP, a typical plant with conventional processes employed to treat source water heavily polluted by natural organic matter (NOM). Originally, the LW DWTP exhibits DOC removal efficiency as low as 14.4% for filtration effluents; and CODMn concentrations continually exceed the required (<3mg/L) for half a year. High doses of chlorine during pre- and post-chlorination at this DWTP lead to the formation of high-level total trihalomethane (TTHMs). Decreasing the dosages of chlorine during pre-chlorination from 3.5 to 2mg/L obviously inhibit TTHMs formation from 0.98 to 0.54 for influents of this plant, but showed limited efficiency for its effluents due to the high chlorine demand of this source water. The combined use of KMnO4 and FeCl3 significantly enhanced CODMn removal, and the removed CODMn quantity by coagulation increased from 0.60 to 2.22mg/L whereas that by chlorination decreased from 1.66 to 0.67mg/L. In other words, the contributive ratios of chlorination on CODMn removal decreased from 73.5% to 23.2%. This enhanced coagulation strategy also reduced the required dosages of chlorine from 6.26 to 4.85mg/L, and the formation of TTHMs decreased by 24.8% accordingly.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in reclaimed water from a conventional sewage treatment plant was isolated using resin adsorption chromatography technique into six classes: hydrophobic bases (HoB), hydrophobic acids (HoA), hydrophobic neutrals (HoN), hydrophilic bases (HiB), hydrophilic acids (HiA) and hydrophilic neutrals (HiN). It was found that organic acids dominated in reclaimed water and the ratios of UV254 (absorbance at 254nm) to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) (SUVA254) ratio exhibited a common relationship: HoA>reclaimed water>HiA. The influences of chemical structures and experimental conditions on the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) were investigated, respectively. SUVA254 was found to exhibit a positive and statistically significant correlation with DBPs formation potential. The specific trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) formation potential decreased as the same sequence: acids, neutrals and bases. The formation of DBPs depended more on a combination of aromatic moieties and aliphatic structures such as hydroxy acids. Furthermore, THMs formed more easily at alkaline conditions; however, hydrophobic organics formed HAAs more easily at acidic conditions, whereas hydrophilic organics achieved relatively high HAAs at both acidic and strong alkaline conditions. Moreover, the observed rate constant for HAAs formation was larger than the rate constant for THMs formation. Addition of ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) changed chlorine to chloramines with lower oxidation potential, and correspondingly influenced the formation of DBPs especially at the chlorination breakpoint.
