Abstract:Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) is one of the most widely studied piezoelectric materials, mainly because of its 'mysterious' relationship between the so-called morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) and its strong piezoelectric coupling factor. Using results from a pair distribution function analysis, this paper examines how the complex local structure in PZT affects the long-range average structure across the MPB. A monoclinic M C type structure is discovered in PZT. A first-order transformation between the monoclinic M A and M C components in both the average and local structures explains the sudden change in piezoelectric effect around these compositions. The role of polarization rotation in the enhancement of the piezoelectric properties is discussed with respect to the composition of PZT. The structure-property relationship that is revealed by this study explains the unique properties of PZT, and may be applicable in the design of new MPB-type functional materials.
Evidence against the polarization rotation model of piezoelectric perovskites at the morphotropic phase boundary

Abstract:The origin of the very large piezoelectric response observed in the vicinity of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in perovskite lead zirconate titanate and related systems has been under intensive studies. Polarization rotation ideas are frequently invoked to explain the piezoelectric properties. It was recently reported that lead titanate undergoes a phase transformation sequence $P4mm\to Pm\to Cm\to R\bar{3}c$ at 10 K as a function of hydrostatic pressure [M. Ahart et al. Nature Letters. \textbf{451}, 545 (2008)]. We demonstrate that this interpretation is not correct by (i) simulating the reported diffraction patterns, and (ii) by density-functional theory computations which show that neither the $Pm$, $Cm$ nor $Pmm2$ phase is stable in the studied pressure range, and further show that octahedral tilting is the key stabilization mechanism under high pressure. Notes on a more general ground are given to demonstrate that a continuous phase transition between rhombohedral and tetragonal phases via intermediate monoclinic phase is not possible. Thus, two-phase co-existence in the vicinity of the phase transition region is probable and has an important role for electromechanical properties.

Abstract:In this work, we address the issue of peaking of piezoelectric response at a particular composition in the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region of (Pb0.940Sr0.06)(ZrxTi1-x)O3 (PSZT) piezoelectric ceramics. We present results of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, dielectric, piezoelectric and sound velocity studies to critically examine the applicability of various models for the peaking of physical properties. It is shown that the models based on the concepts of phase coexistence, polarization rotation due to monoclinic structure, tricritical point and temperature dependent softening of elastic modulus may enhance the piezoelectric response in the MPB region in general but cannot explain its peaking at a specific composition. Our results reveal that the high value of piezoelectric response for the MPB compositions in PSZT at x=0.530 is due to the softening of the elastic modulus as a function of composition. The softening of elastic modulus facilitates the generation of large piezoelectric strain and polarization on approaching the MPB composition of x=0.530. This new finding based on the softening of elastic modulus may pave the way forward for discovering/designing new lead-free environmentally friendly piezoelectric materials and revolutionize the field of piezoelectric ceramics.

Abstract:For many decades, great efforts have been devoted to pursue a large piezoelectric response by an intelligent design of morphotropic phase boundaries (MPB) in solid solutions, where tetragonal (T) and rhombohedral (R) structures coexist. For example, classical PbZrxTi1-xO3 and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-PbTiO3 single crystals demonstrate a giant piezoelectric response near MPB. However, as the end member of these solids, perovskite-structured PbTiO3 always adopts the T phase at room temperature. Here, we report a pathway to create room temperature MPB in a single-phase PbTiO3. The uniaxial stress along the c-axis drives a T-R phase transition bridged by a monoclinic (M) phase, which facilitates a polarization rotation in the monodomain PbTiO3. Meanwhile, we demonstrate that the coexistence of T and R phases at room temperature can be achieved via an extremely mismatched heterointerface system. The uniaxial pressure is proved as an efficient way to break the inherent symmetry and able to substantially tailor the phase transition temperature Tc. These findings provide new insights into MPB, offering the opportunity to explore the giant piezoelectric response in single-phase materials. (c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Revisit the phase diagram and piezoelectricity of lead zirconate titanate from first principles

Abstract:Lead zirconate titanate (PbZr1-xTixO3, PZT) exhibits excellent piezoelectric properties in the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region of its temperature-composition phase diagram. However, the microscopic origin of its high piezoelectric response remains controversial. Here, we develop a machine-learning-based deep potential (DP) model of PZT using the training dataset from first principles density functional theory calculations. Based on DP-assisted large-scale atomic simulations, we reproduce the temperature-composition phase diagram of PZT, in good agreement with the experiment except the absence of structural transition from R3c to R3m. We find that the rhombohedral phase maintains R3c symmetry with slight oxygen octahedral tilting as increase of temperature, instead of appearing R3m symmetry. This discrepancy can trace back to the lack of experimental measurements to identify such slight octahedral tilting. More importantly, we clarify the atomic-level feature of PZT at the MPB, exhibiting the competing coupling of ferroelectric nanodomains with various polarization orientations. The high piezoelectric response is driven by polarization rotation of nanodomains induced by an external electric field.

Abstract:A first-principles-derived effective Hamiltonian is adopted to simulate the effects of high-pressure on Pb(Zr1−xTix)O3 near the morphotropic phase boundary. With increasing pressure, the induced tetragonal-to-monoclinic and monoclinic-to-rhombohedral phase transitions are observed at low temperatures, which are accompanied by significantly enhanced piezoelectric responses. By determining the pressure-temperature phase diagram, it was revealed that the M phase resides in a narrow region between the T and R phases with inclining boundaries.

Abstract:The correlation between structure and electrical properties of lead-free (1−x)(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3–xBaTiO3 (BNT-100xBT) polycrystalline piezoceramics was investigated systematically by in situ synchrotron diffraction technique, combined with electrical property characterization. It was found that the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) between a rhombohedral and a tetragonal phase evolved into a morphotropic phase region with electric field. In the unpoled material, the MPB was positioned at the transition from space group R3m to P4mm (BNT-11BT) with optimized permittivity throughout a broad single-phase R3m composition regime. Upon poling, a range of compositions from BNT-6BT to BNT-11BT became two-phase mixture, and maximum piezoelectric coefficient was observed in BNT-7BT. It was shown that optimized electrical properties are related primarily to the capacity for domain texturing and not to phase coexistence.

Abstract:A summary of the work recently carried out on the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of PZT is presented. By means of x-ray powder diffraction on ceramic samples of excellent quality, the MPB has been successfully characterized by changing temperature in a series of closely spaced compositions. As a result, an unexpected monoclinic phase has been found to exist in between the well-known tetragonal and rhombohedral PZT phases. A detailed structural analysis, together with the investigation of the field effect in this region of compositions, have led to an important advance in understanding the mechanisms responsible for the physical properties of PZT as well as other piezoelectric materials with similar morphotropic phase boundaries.

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of the Cassiopeia A and Kepler Supernova Remnants

Abstract:Near-infrared spectra (0.95 - 2.4 micron) of the Cassiopeia A and Kepler supernova remnants (SNRs) are presented. Low-dispersion (R = 700) spectra were obtained for five bright fast-moving ejecta knots (FMKs) at two locations on the main shell and for three bright circumstellar knots (QSFs) near the southwest rim of Cas A. The main shell FMKs in Cas A exhibit a sparse near-infrared spectrum dominated by [S II] 1.03 micron emission with a handful of other, fainter emission lines. Among these are two high-ionization silicon lines, [Si VI] 1.96 micron and [Si X] 1.43 micron, which have been detected in AGNs and novae but never before in a supernova remnant. The near-infrared spectra of circumstellar QSFs in Cas A show a much richer spectrum, with strong He I 1.083 micron emission and over a dozen bright [Fe II] lines. Observed [Fe II] line ratios indicate electron densities of 5 - 9 * 10^4 cm^-3 in the QSFs. The Cas A QSF data are quite similar to the observed spectrum of a bright circumstellar knot along the northwest rim of the Kepler SNR, which also shows strong He I and [Fe II] emission with a measured electron density of 2.5 - 3 * 10^4 cm^-3. Finally, we present J- and K-band images of Cas A. The K-band image shows faint diffuse emission which has no optical or mid-infrared counterpart but is morphologically similar to radio continuum maps and may be infrared synchrotron radiation.

Abstract:High Curie temperature (TC) xBi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3-(1-x)Pb(Zr1/2Ti1/2)O3 (xBNT-(1-x)PZT, BNT-PZT) piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional ceramic processing. The composition-induced morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) and its influences on structure and electrical performance were investigated. The synthesized BNT-PZT ceramics exhibit rather pure perovskite structure, and densified microstructure morphology with uniform elementals distribution in both grains and grain boundaries. With increasing the content of Bi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3 (BNT), crystal structure of the BNT-PZT ceramics transform from tetragonal phase to rhombohedral phase, and dielectric response peaks change from narrow shape to very broad shape but all presenting dielectric frequency dispersion. The diffused and relaxation dielectric behavior can be fitted well by the quadratic law, and the Vogel-Fulcher law fitting provides additional information on the relaxation characteristic. The MPB effects are confirmed further by ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties measurements. High-TC combined with excellent piezoelectric performance can be realized in the BNT-PZT system, which presents promising applications in geothermal exploration, aerospace and related elevated temperatures fields.
A compositional ordering-driven morphotropic phase boundary in ferroelectric solid solutions

Abstract:Ferroelectric solid solutions usually exhibit giant dielectric response and high piezoelectricity in the vicinity of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), where the structural phase transitions between the rhombohedral and the tetragonal phases as a result of the composition or strain variation. Here, we propose a compositional ordering-driven MPB in the specified compositional solid solutions. By preforming machine-learning potential based molecular dynamics simulations on lead zirconate titanate, we find a phase transition from the rhombohedral to tetragonal phase with the decrease of compositional ordering, leading to the MPB on temperature-ordering phase diagram. The compositional ordering-driven MPB can enhances the piezoelectricity with a magnitude comparable to that at the composition-driven MPB. Finally, we demonstrate that the mechanism of high piezoelectricity is polarization rotation driven by external field. This work provides an additional degree of freedom, compositional ordering, to design the high-performance piezoelectric materials.

Abstract:The influence of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of PbNi1/3Nb2/3O3-PbZrO3-PbTiO3 (PNN-PZ-PT) ternary system were systematically investigated. The results showed that the piezoelectric constant d31 and plane coupling factor kp reached a maximum in the vicinity of morphotropic phase boundary. The highest value of the piezoelectric constant d31 was 260×10−12 C/N. The Curie temperature Tc decreased rapidly with increasing content of PNN. The lattice parameters a increased and c decreased with increasing PNN content and the Zr/Zr + Ti ratio as a result of the crystal structural transformation from tetragonal to rhombohedral phases.

Abstract:Materials with coexisting ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and pyroelectric properties have taken a great scientific attraction owing to their potential technological applications. In this work, employing X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements combined with a photoluminescence investigation at room temperature, we report a composition-driven structural phase transition in the ferroelectric PbZrxTi1-xO3 (PZT) system by tuning the Zr content close to the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in the range of 0.44≤x≤0.58. The Ti-rich compound (x = 0.44) crystallizes in a tetragonal structure while the Zr-rich compound (x = 0.58) belongs to the rhombohedral symmetry. The system exhibits a phase coexistence region composed of these tetragonal and rhombohedral phases in the vicinity of MPB for compositions with x = 0.50, 0.52, and 0.53. We reveal strong and systematic evolution of the Raman shift, Raman strength, and damping constants for the Raman active phonon modes associated with the aforementioned structural transition and the increased local disorder of Ti4+ or Zr4+ cations as a function of x. We further uncover a resonance Raman phenomenon with 633 nm (1.96 eV) excitation, enhancing the Raman strength and damping constants of certain low-lying transverse optical (TO) phonon modes in the Raman spectra. The photoluminescence emission spectrum shows evidence of in-gap energy levels that could be ascribed to self-trapped excitons, explaining the origin of the resonance Raman effect in PZT ceramics.

Abstract:The structural characteristics of the perovskite- based ferroelectric Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-9%PbTiO3 at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region (x≃0.09) have been analyzed. The analysis is based on the symmetry adapted free energy functions under the assumption that the total polarization and the unit cell volume are conserved during the transformations between various morphotropic phases. Overall features of the relationships between the observed lattice constants at various conditions have been consistently explained. The origin of the anomalous physical properties at MPB is discussed.

Abstract:Anelastic and dielectric spectroscopy measurements on PbZr(1-x)Ti(x)O(3) (PZT) close to the morphotropic (MPB) and antiferroelectric boundaries provide new insight into some controversial aspects of its phase diagram. No evidence is found of a border separating monoclinic (M) from rhombohedral (R) phases, in agreement with recent structural studies supporting a coexistence of the two phases over a broad composition range x<0.5, with the fraction of M increasing toward the MPB. It is also discussed why the observed maximum of elastic compliance appears to be due to a rotational instability of the polarization linearly coupled to shear strain. Therefore it cannot be explained by extrinsic softening from finely twinned R phase alone, but indicates the presence also of M phase, not necessarily homogeneous.A new diffuse transition is found within the ferroelectric phase near x ~ 0.1, at a temperature T(IT) higher than the well established boundary T(T) to the phase with tilted octahedra. It is proposed that around T(IT) the octahedra start rotating in a disordered manner and finally become ordered below T(T). In this interpretation, the onset temperature for octahedral tilting monotonically increases up to the antiferroelectric transition of PbZrO(3), and the depression of T(T)(x) below x=0.18 would be a consequence of the partial relief of the mismatch between the average cation radii with the initial stage of tilting below T(IT).
Mechanoreceptors in the Cuticle of the Honey Bee : Fine Structure and Stimulus Mechanism

Abstract:The distal nerve process of hair plate sensilla and campaniform sensilla contains a special terminal structure in the form of a bundle of tubules herein designated the "tubular body." Physiological and morphological results indicate that compression at the site of this body probably acts as the stimulus at the cellular level. A ciliary structure separates an outer segment of the distal nerve process from the remaining distal fiber. Recent investigations show that the hair plates of insects function as position receptors in the joints and in this way can act as gravitation receptors (1, 2). An electrophysiological and microscopic study of the single receptor elements brought results which related to the mechanism of stimulation in the nerve endings (3). In the study reported here the morphological basis of the primary receptor processes was investigated by electron microscopy. The objects studied were the cervical hair plates of the honey bee (2, 3) and, for comparison, the campaniform sensilla of the head. The sensilla of the hair plates and the campaniform sensilla each contain only one receptor cell of the bipolar type. The distal process of the cell enters through a canal in the cuticle and connects with the joint membrane in the hair plate sensillum, and with the cap membrane in the campaniform sensillum (Fig. 1). These cuticular structures probably consist of the rubber-like protein resilin (4), as indicated by their special staining properties, by their extraordinary deformability in the joint membrane, by their stress-birefringence, and by their digestability by pepsin. Both types of sensillum have a nearly bilaterally symmetrical form: the hairs in their resting position lean against an overhang of the cuticle at one side and can be freely pivoted only in the opposite direction; the campaniform sensilla have an elliptic form, when observed from

Abstract:We find an unexpected tetragonal-to-monoclinic-to-rhombohedral-to-cubic phase transition sequence induced by pressure, and a morphotropic phase boundary in a pure compound using first-principles calculations. Huge dielectric and piezoelectric coupling constants occur in the transition regions, comparable to those observed in the new complex single-crystal solid-solution piezoelectrics such as Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$-PbTiO$_{3}$, which are expected to revolutionize electromechanical applications. Our results show that morphotropic phase boundaries and giant piezoelectric effects do not require intrinsic disorder, and open the possibility of studying this effect in simple systems.

Abstract:Piezoelectric actuators play a strong part in the field of electromechanical applications by precisely transferring input electric energy into mechanical force, electric displacement efficiently based on inverse piezoelectric effect. It is still challenging for high-drive electromechanical applications to rely on advanced ferroelectrics with high piezoelectricity. This study focuses on the xPb(Ni 1/3 Sb 2/3 )O 3 –(1 − x )Pb(Zr 0.48 Ti 0.52 )O 3 ternary ceramics as the base composition to design morphotropic phase boundary region to strengthen piezoelectric response. The results show that the composition at x = 0.12 locates at morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region which exhibits optimal piezoelectric charge coefficient d 33 of 481 pC/N, Curie temperature T c of 226 °C, and electromechanical coupling coefficient k p = 0.43, respectively. Additionally, this composition demonstrates excellent temperature stability within a range of 160 °C, suggesting its potential as a promising solution for high electromechanical applications. In summary, a comprehensive piezoelectric performance evaluation of the PNS-PZT ternary ceramics was conducted for the first time, yielding the highest piezoelectric coefficient compared with reported peer-reviewed literature. These findings contribute novel perspectives to the compositional design of high-performance piezoelectric actuators.

Abstract:In situ high-energy X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed on lead-zirconate-titanate-based ferroelectric materials with composition near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). The utilization of the two-dimensional area detector in in situ field-dependent experiments enables the complete analysis of the material response with respect to all azimuthal angles at each field amplitude. The studies reveal that the field-induced phase transition from tetragonal to rhombohedral is dependent on crystal orientation in Nb-doped PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 that is in close compositional proximity to the MPB. However, only domain wall motion is activated in Nb-doped PbZr0.50Ti0.50O3, which is further in composition from the MPB. This synchrotron-based XRD characterization approach illustrates the importance in evaluating the orientation-dependence of phase transitions in piezoelectric and ferroelectric polycrystalline materials.

Abstract:Recent structural studies of ferroelectric PbZr(1-x)TixO3 (PZT) with x= 0.48, have revealed a new monoclinic phase in the vicinity of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), previously regarded as the the boundary separating the rhombohedral and tetragonal regions of the PZT phase diagram. In the present paper, the stability region of all three phases has been established from high resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction measurements on a series of highly homogeneous samples with 0.42 <=x<= 0.52. At 20K the monoclinic phase is stable in the range 0.46 <=x<= 0.51, and this range narrows as the temperature is increased. A first-order phase transition from tetragonal to rhombohedral symmetry is observed only for x= 0.45. The MPB, therefore, corresponds not to the tetragonal-rhombohedral phase boundary, but instead to the boundary between the tetragonal and monoclinic phases for 0.46 <=x<= 0.51. This result provides important insight into the close relationship between the monoclinic phase and the striking piezoelectric properties of PZT; in particular, investigations of poled samples have shown that the monoclinic distortion is the origin of the unusually high piezoelectric response of PZT.
