Abstract:The zinc ion battery (ZIB) with mild aqueous electrolytes is one of the most promising systems for the large-scale energy storage application due to its high safety, environmental benignity, low cost, and high energy density. It exhibits excellent application potential and has attracted the attention of battery developers for grid energy storage demands in recent years. Compared with the numerous studies on the cathode materials for ZIBs, the research on the enhancement of the electrochemical performance of zinc metal anode is still in its early stage. The current challenges for Zn anodes are their poor cyclability and low Coulombic efficiency (CE) originated from the severe dendrite growth, self-corrosion, and irreversible byproducts formation. To address the intrinsic drawbacks of zinc metal anodes in mild aqueous electrolytes, some effective strategies, including interfacial modification between anode and electrolyte, structural design for Zn anodes and the adoption of novel separators and electrolytes, have been developed recently. This review aims to highlight the recent advances in Zn anode and outline future opportunities for the development of high-performance zinc metal anodes in aqueous ZIBs.

Abstract:With outstanding safety and economic benefits, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) represent a highly promising energy system. As the "blood" of ZIBs, the solid (electrode)/liquid (electrolyte) interface reactions and the transport rate of zinc ions in the electrolyte are crucial fields for long-term ZIBs. However, parasitic reactions and dendrite growth at the electrode/electrolyte interface hinder the practical application of ZIBs. Thus, adjusting the composition of the electrolyte is valuable to reduce active-H2O molecules in the solvation structure and realize a textured zinc anode. In this mini-review, the electrochemical reaction dilemmas in electrode/electrolyte interfaces and the modification mechanism of additives are first summarized. Furthermore, we compare the charge transfer and storage methods among various electrolyte additives. Notably, the effects of plating/stripping textures ((100), (101) and (002) crystal planes) on the reversibility of zinc metal anodes are highlighted, providing a more intuitive strategy for the epitaxial growth of zinc metal. Finally, the specific applications and perspectives of ZIBs with additives are outlined to guide next-generation efficient energy storage.

Abstract:This study provides a comprehensive overview of current strategies aimed at addressing challenges in aqueous Zn‐ion batteries. Specifically, it focuses on strategies for enhancing the cycling stability of Zn anodes, encompassing controllable synthesis of Zn, artificial surface coating techniques, electrolyte engineering, and separator design. This review is expected to serve as a valuable guide for future research and development endeavors. Aqueous Zn‐ion batteries (AZIBs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent safety, cost‐effectiveness, and eco‐friendliness thereby being considered as one of the most promising candidates for large‐scale energy storage. Zn metal anodes with a high gravimetric/volumetric capacity are indispensable for advanced AZIBs. However, pristine Zn metal anodes encounter severe challenges in achieving adequate cycling stability, including dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution reaction, self‐corrosion, and by‐product formation. Because all these reactions are closely related to the electrolyte/Zn interface, the subtle interface engineering is important. Many strategies targeted to the interface engineering have been developed. In this review, a timely update on these strategies and perspectives are summarized, especially focusing on the controllable synthesis of Zn, Zn surface engineering, electrolyte formulation, and separator design. Furthermore, the corresponding internal principles of these strategies are clarified, which is helpful to help seek for new strategies. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for the future development of practical AZIBs are discussed, including the conducting of in advanced in situ testing, unification of battery models, some boundary issues, etc. This review is expected to guide the future development and provi beacon light direction for aqueous zinc ion batteries.

Finally, possible tactics and future innovation direction for Zn‐based batteries are proposed to achieve high performance aqueous Zinc‐ion batteries. Up to now, less efforts to delve into mechanisms of zinc metal anode and their electrochemical performance. Zn metal anodes sustain thorny issues with Zn dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution reaction, and Zn corrosion irreversible byproduct formation, which results in low coulomb efficiency (CE) and poor cycle ability of the battery. Herein, we reveal the fundamental understanding of the above issue, outline four step, including mass transfer, desolvation process, charge transfer and Zn cluster formation. It can be clearly seen from reported strategies to promote Zn anode stability that deals with one or more steps, thereby boosting the understanding of the issues of Zn anodes and benefiting the rational design to surmount the issue. We also sum up advanced materials and structure design such as the design of the anode surface and internal structure, electrolyte strategies, and multifunctional separators. Finally, possible tactics and future innovation direction for Zn‐based batteries are proposed to achieve high performance aqueous Zinc‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising safe energy storage systems that have received considerable attention in recent years. Based on the electrochemical behavior of Zn2+ in the charging and discharging process, herein we review the research progress on anode materials for use in aqueous ZIBs based on two aspects: Zn deposition and Zn2+ intercalation. To date, Zn dendrite, corrosion, and passivation issues have restricted the development of aqueous ZIBs. However, many strategies have been developed, including structural design, interface protection of the Zn anode, Zn alloying, and using polymer electrolytes. The main aim is to stabilize the Zn stripping/plating layer and limit side reactions. Zn2+-intercalated anodes, with a high Zn2+ storage capacity to replace the current metal Zn anode, are also a potential option. Finally, some suggestions have been put forward for the subsequent optimization strategy, which are expected to promote further development of aqueous ZIBs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received much research and attention due to their advantages of safety, non-toxicity, simple manufacture, and element abundance. Nevertheless, serious problems still remain for their anodes, with dendrite development, corrosion, passivation, and the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction due to their unique aqueous electrolyte system constituting the main issues that must be addressed, which are blocking the further advancement of anodes for Zn-ion batteries. Herein, we conduct an in-depth analysis of the problems that exist for the zinc anode, summarize the main failure types and mechanisms of the zinc anode, and review the main modification strategies for the anode from the three aspects of the electrolyte, anode surface, and anode host. Furthermore, we also shed light on further modification and optimization strategies for the zinc anode, which give an idea of where anodes for zinc-ion batteries should go in the future.

Abstract:Abstract Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) have been intensively investigated as potential energy storage devices on account of their low cost, environmental benignity, and intrinsically safe merits. With the exploitation of high‐performance cathode materials, electrolyte systems, and in‐depth mechanism investigation, the electrochemical performances of ZIBs have been greatly enhanced. However, there are still some challenges that need to be overcome before its commercialization. Among them, the obstinate dendrites, corrosion, and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on Zn anodes are critical issues that severely limit the practical applications of ZIBs. To address these issues, various strategies have been proposed, and tremendous progress has been achieved in the past few years. In this article, we analyze the origins and effects of the dendrites, corrosion, and HER on Zn anodes in neutral and mildly acid aqueous solutions at first. And then, a scientific understanding of the fundamental design principles and strategies to suppress these problems are emphasized. Apart from these, this article also puts forward some requirements for the practical applications of Zn anodes as well as several cost‐effective‐modifying strategies. Finally, perspectives on the future development of Zn anodes in aqueous solutions are also briefly anticipated. This article provides pertinent insights into the challenges on anodes for the development of high‐performance ZIBs, which will greatly contribute to their practical applications.

Abstract:Zn-based aqueous batteries (ZABs) hold great promise for large-scale energy storage applications due to the merits of intrinsic safety and low cost. Nevertheless, the thorny issues of metallic Zn anodes, including dendrite growth and parasitic side reactions, have severely limited the application of ZABs. Despite the encouraging improvements for stabilizing Zn anodes through surface modification, electrolyte optimization, and structural design, fundamentally addressing the inherent thermodynamics and kinetics obstacles of Zn anodes remains crucial in realizing reliable ZABs with ultrahigh efficiency, capacity, and cyclability. The target of this perspective is to elucidate the prominent status of Zn metal anode electrochemistry first from the perspective of zincophilicity and zincophobicity. Recent progress in ZABs is critically appraised for addressing the key issues, with special emphasis on the trade-off between zincophilic and zincophobic electrochemistry. Challenges and prospects for further exploration of a reliable Zn anode are presented, which are expected to boost in-depth research and practical applications of advanced ZABs.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are of the most potential energy storage systems for large-scale applications due to their low redox potential (−0.76 V vs standard hydrogen electrode, SHE), high theoretical specific capacity (820 mA h g −1 and 5855 mA h cm −3 ), safety, low toxicity and price, eco-friendliness and abundant reserves. In spite of many hurdles before their practical application, great progress has been achieved on high-performance AZIBs. In this review, the main issues and their root causes faced by metal zinc anode and manganese dioxide cathode of AZIBs are analyzed, and the recent research progress on the modification strategies and their working mechanisms of both metal zinc anode and manganese dioxide cathode are focused on, and their challenges and future development prospects are also proposed, which provide a perspective for high-performance AZIBs, and further promote their practical process.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of the world population and the further industrialization of modern society, the demand for energy continues to rise sharply. Hence, the development of alternative, renewable, and clean energy sources is urgently needed to address the impending energy crisis. Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries are drawing increased attention and are regarded as the most promising candidates for large-scale energy storage systems. However, some challenges exist for both the anode and cathode, severely restricting the practical application of ZIBs. In this review, we focus on the issues related to the anode (such as dendrites growth, hydrogen evolution, and surface passivation). We discuss the causes of these challenges and summarize the strategies (such as surface engineering, electrolyte modification, and 3D structural skeleton and alloying) to overcome them. Finally, we discuss future opportunities and challenges of ZIBs regarding the Zn anode.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid advance of mild aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) is driving the development of the energy storage system market. But the thorny issues of Zn anodes, mainly including dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution, and corrosion, severely reduce the performance of ZIBs. To commercialize ZIBs, researchers must overcome formidable challenges. Research about mild aqueous ZIBs is still developing. Various technical and scientific obstacles to designing Zn anodes with high stripping efficiency and long cycling life have not been resolved. Moreover, the performance of Zn anodes is a complex scientific issue determined by various parameters, most of which are often ignored, failing to achieve the maximum performance of the cell. This review proposes a comprehensive overview of existing Zn anode issues and the corresponding strategies, frontiers, and development trends to deeply comprehend the essence and inner connection of degradation mechanism and performance. First, the formation mechanism of dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution, corrosion, and their influence on the anode are analyzed. Furthermore, various strategies for constructing stable Zn anodes are summarized and discussed in detail from multiple perspectives. These strategies are mainly divided into interface modification, structural anode, alloying anode, intercalation anode, liquid electrolyte, non-liquid electrolyte, separator design, and other strategies. Finally, research directions and prospects are put forward for Zn anodes. This contribution highlights the latest developments and provides new insights into the advanced Zn anode for future research.

Abstract:With the development of science and technology, there is an increasing demand for energy storage batteries. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are expected to become the next generation of commercialized energy storage devices due to their advantages. The aqueous zinc ion battery is generally composed of zinc metal as the anode, active material as the cathode, and aqueous electrolyte. However, there are still many problems with the cathode/anode material and voltage window of the battery, which limit its use. This review introduces the recent research progress of zinc-ion batteries, including the advantages and disadvantages, energy storage mechanisms, and common cathode/anode materials, electrolytes, etc. It also gives a summary of the current research status of each material and provides solutions to the problems they face. Finally, it looks at the future direction and methods to optimize the performance of zinc-ion full batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have garnered considerable interest as an eco-friendly, safe, and cost-effective energy storage solution. Although significant strides have been made in recent years, there remain technical hurdles to overcome. Herein, this review summarizes in detail the primary challenges confronting aqueous zinc ion batteries, including the rampant dendrite growth, and water-induced parasitic reactions, and proposes host-engineering modification strategies focusing on optimizing the structure design of the zinc anode substrates, involving three-dimensional structure design, zincophilicity regulation, and epitaxial-oriented modification, and comprehensively analyzes the structure-activity relationship between different modification strategies and battery performance. In addition, we highlight the research trends and prospects in future anode modification for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. This work offers valuable insights into advanced Zn anode constructions for further applications in high-performance AZIBs.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have emerged as one of the promising scalable electrochemical energy storage system alternatives to current alkali metal-based batteries due to their high safety, nontoxicity, abundant raw material sources, and facile device fabrication. However, their inherent water-containing electrolyte nature raises the problems of severe dendrite growth, competing hydrogen evolution, and passivation at the anode side, considerably restricting the practical applications of aqueous ZIBs. In this review, considering these main existing challenges, we first review the key protection strategies of zinc anodes from three aspects, including constructing Zn anodes, building an artificial interface layer, and tailoring electrolyte composition, for regulating the Zn-ion deposition kinetics and mitigating the water reactivity. In the end, we explore several key considerations that must be taken into account to promote the development and future practical applications of aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable batteries are regarded as one of the ultimate solutions needed to solve the safety problems of conventional rechargeable batteries using organic electrolytes, but the challenge is to find suitable anode materials that will work well in the narrow electrochemical window of water with reasonable capacities. Aqueous Zn-based rechargeable batteries using Zn anode, a mild aqueous electrolyte, and Zn2+ or another monovalent/multivalent metal ion as charge carrier have been receiving extensive attention in recent years due to their low cost, high safety, environmental friendliness, and acceptable energy density. Although it is still a challenge to achieve high performance aqueous Zn-based rechargeable batteries with a long cycle life and a high energy density, considerable efforts have been devoted to overcoming the drawbacks associated with the Zn anode, electrolyte, and cathode materials. In this review, the recent advances on the aqueous Zn-based rechargeable batteries, including aqueous Zn ion batteries (AZIBs) and aqueous Zn hybrid batteries (AZHBs), are systematically reviewed. We first summarize and discuss the Zn anode behaviour and strategies to restrain the dendrite formation and improve the plating/stripping efficiency. Then, the cathode materials used in AZIBs and AZHBs are summarized in terms of their structures, electrochemical performance, and reaction mechanism, as well as the strategies used to improve their electrochemical performance. The electrolytes and their effects on the electrochemical performance of Zn anode and cathode materials are also discussed. Finally, the challenges for and perspectives on AZIBs and AZHBs are summarized to guide research directions in the future.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), the favorite of next-generation energy storage devices, are popular among researchers owing to their environmental friendliness, low cost, and safety. However, AZIBs still face problems of low cathode capacity, fast attenuation, slow ion migration rate, and irregular dendrite growth on anodes. In recent years, many researchers have focused on Zn anode modification to restrain dendrite growth. This review introduces the energy storage mechanism and current challenges of AZIBs, and then some modifying strategies for zinc anodes are elucidated from the perspectives of experiments and theoretical calculations. From the experimental point of view, the modification strategy is mainly to construct a dense artificial interface layer or porous framework on the anode surface, with some research teams directly using zinc alloys as anodes. On the other hand, theoretical research is mainly based on adsorption energy, differential charge density, and molecular dynamics. Finally, this paper summarizes the research progress on AZIBs and puts forward some prospects.

Abstract:Solid‐electrolyte interphase plays a significant role in promoting the reversibility of Zn metal anode in aqueous batteries. Herein, recent progress on electrolyte strategies facilitating the formation of anion‐derived solid‐electrolyte interphase is summarized. Further challenges and perspectives are also presented. Rechargeable aqueous zinc–metal batteries (AZBs) are a promising complimentary technology to the existing lithium‐ion batteries and the re‐emerging lithium–metal batteries to satisfy the increasing demands on energy storage. Despite considerable progress achieved in the past years, the fundamental understanding of the solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and how its composition influences the SEI properties are limited. This review highlights the functionalities of anion‐tuned SEI on the reversibility of zinc–metal anode, with a specific emphasis on new structural insights obtained through advanced characterizations and computational techniques. Recent efforts in terms of key variables that govern the interfacial behaviors to improve the long‐term stability of zinc anode, i.e., Coulombic efficiency, plating morphology, dendrite formation, and side‐reactions, are comprehensively reviewed. Lastly, the remaining challenges and future perspectives are presented, providing insights into the rational design of practical high‐performance AZBs.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) have attracted increasing attention as a next‐generation energy storage system because of their inherent safety, high capacity, and cost effectiveness. However, the poor cycling durability and low coulombic efficiency of zinc anodes substantially restrict their further development, which should be attributed to the severe dendrite growth, shape change, surface passivation, self‐corrosion, and byproduct formation across the repeated plating/stripping processes. To address these critical issues, great efforts have been dedicated to the rational design of zinc anodes. In this review, different strategies for the performance improvement of zinc anodes are summarized as well as recent research that boosts their development. These methods include the surface modification, novel host‐anode development for zinc, electrolyte formulation, and separator design. Their respective advantages and defects are compared and discussed in detail. The challenges and further prospects in this field are also addressed. This work is designed to shed light on advanced zinc anode constructions for high‐performance AZIBs assembly. Zinc anodes of aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) persistently suffer from dendrite growth, shape change, surface passivation, and hydrogen evolution, resulting in low cycling durability and deficient coulombic efficiency of AZIBs or even battery failure. Herein, an overview is presented of the latest development of the rational design of zinc anode for addressing these issues.
