Abstract:The concentration of epidermal growth factor-EGF has been measured in umbilical vein serum among preterm and term newborns by means of specific RIA assay. The mean EGF concentration among term newborns was found to be higher than in preterm (0.236 +/- 0.094 vs 0.167 +/- 0.087 pg/ml; p < 0.05). We did not observed any correlation between EGF concentrations and the occurrence of respiratory distress syndrome in preterm babies. The role of EGF in human parturition has been discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we reveal the relationship between entropy rate and the congestion in complex network and solve it analytically for special cases. Finding maximizing entropy rate will lead to an improvement of traffic efficiency, we propose a method to mitigate congestion by allocating limited traffic capacity to the nodes in network rationally. Different from former strategies, our method only requires local and observable information of network, and is low-cost and widely applicable in practice. In the simulation of the phase transition for various network models, our method performs well in mitigating congestion both locally and globally. By comparison, we also uncover the deficiency of former degree-biased approaches. Owing to the rapid development of transportation networks, our method may be helpful for modern society.

Abstract:By introducing a simple model based on two-dimensional cellular automata, we reveal the relationship between the routing strategies of individual vehicles and the global behavior of transportation networks. Specifically, we characterize the routing strategies by a single parameter called path-greediness, which corresponds to the tendency for individuals to travel via a shortest path to the destination. Remarkably, when vehicles tend to travel via the shortest path, a congested-flow state emerges between the conventional free-flow and congested states, where traffic flow increases slowly with vehicle density in the presence of congestion. We also found that a high individual tendency to travel via the shortest path does not necessarily shorten the average journey time, as the system may benefit from less greedy routing strategies in congested situations. Finally, we show that adaptive routing strategies outperform controlled strategies in the free-flow state, but not in the congested state, implying that controlled strategies may increase coordination among vehicles and are beneficial for suppressing traffic congestion.
On the Power of Randomization for Scheduling Real-Time Traffic in Wireless Networks

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling real-time traffic in wireless networks under a conflict-graph interference model and single-hop traffic. The objective is to guarantee that at least a certain fraction of packets of each link are delivered within their deadlines, which is referred to as delivery ratio. This problem has been studied before under restrictive frame-based traffic models, or greedy maximal scheduling schemes like LDF (Largest-Deficit First) that provide poor delivery ratio for general traffic patterns. In this paper, we pursue a different approach through randomization over the choice of maximal links that can transmit at each time. We design randomized policies in collocated networks, multi-partite networks, and general networks, that can achieve delivery ratios much higher than what is achievable by LDF. Further, our results apply to traffic (arrival and deadline) processes that evolve as positive recurrent Markov Chains. Hence, this work is an improvement with respect to both efficiency and traffic assumptions compared to the past work. We further present extensive simulation results over various traffic patterns and interference graphs to illustrate the gains of our randomized policies over LDF variants.

Abstract:Focusing on the first-best marginal cost pricing (MCP) in a stochastic network with both travel demand uncertainty and stochastic perception errors within the travelers' route choice decision processes, this paper develops a perceived risk-based stochastic network marginal cost pricing (PRSN-MCP) model. Numerical examples based on an integrated method combining the moment analysis approach, the fitting distribution method, and the reliability measures are also provided to demonstrate the importance and properties of the proposed model. The main finding is that ignoring the effect of travel time reliability and travelers' perception errors may significantly reduce the performance of the first-best MCP tolls, especially under high travelers' confidence and network congestion levels. The analysis result could also enhance our understanding of (1) the effect of stochastic perception error (SPE) on the perceived travel time distribution and the components of road toll; (2) the effect of road toll on the actual travel time distribution and its reliability measures; (3) the effect of road toll on the total network travel time distribution and its statistics; and (4) the effect of travel demand level and the value of reliability (VoR) level on the components of road toll.

Abstract:General models of network navigation must contain a deterministic or drift component, encouraging the agent to follow routes of least cost, as well as a random or diffusive component, enabling free wandering. This paper proposes a thermodynamic formalism involving two path functionals, namely an energy functional governing the drift and an entropy functional governing the diffusion. A freely adjustable parameter, the temperature, arbitrates between the conflicting objectives of minimising travel costs and maximising spatial exploration. The theory is illustrated on various graphs and various temperatures. The resulting optimal paths, together with presumably new associated edges and nodes centrality indices, are analytically and numerically investigated.

Abstract:The availability of massive vehicle trajectory data enables the modeling of road-network constrained movement as travel-cost distributions rather than just single-valued costs, thereby capturing the inherent uncertainty of movement and enabling improved routing quality. Thus, stochastic routing has been studied extensively in the edge-centric model, where such costs are assigned to the edges in a graph representation of a road network. However, as this model still disregards important information in trajectories and fails to capture dependencies among cost distributions, a path-centric model, where costs are assigned to paths, has been proposed that captures dependencies better and provides an improved foundation for routing. Unfortunately, when applied in this model, existing routing algorithms are inefficient due to two shortcomings that we eliminate. First, when exploring candidate paths, existing algorithms only consider the costs of candidate paths from the source to intermediate vertices, while disregarding the costs of travel from the intermediate vertices to the destination, causing many non-competitive paths to be explored. We propose two heuristics for estimating the cost from an intermediate vertex to the destination, thus improving routing efficiency. Second, the edge-centric model relies on stochastic dominance-based pruning to improve efficiency. This pruning assumes that costs are independent and is therefore inapplicable in the path-centric model that takes dependencies into account. We introduce a notion of virtual path that effectively enables stochastic dominance-based pruning in the path-based model, thus further improving efficiency. Empirical studies using two real-world trajectory sets offer insight into the properties of the proposed solution, indicating that it enables efficient stochastic routing in the path-centric model.

Abstract:Considering congestion games with uncertain delays, we compute the inefficiency introduced in network routing by risk-averse agents. At equilibrium, agents may select paths that do not minimize the expected latency so as to obtain lower variability. A social planner, who is likely to be more risk neutral than agents because it operates at a longer time-scale, quantifies social cost with the total expected delay along routes. From that perspective, agents may make suboptimal decisions that degrade long-term quality. We define the {\em price of risk aversion} (PRA) as the worst-case ratio of the social cost at a risk-averse Wardrop equilibrium to that where agents are risk-neutral. For networks with general delay functions and a single source-sink pair, we show that the PRA depends linearly on the agents' risk tolerance and on the degree of variability present in the network. In contrast to the {\em price of anarchy}, in general the PRA increases when the network gets larger but it does not depend on the shape of the delay functions. To get this result we rely on a combinatorial proof that employs alternating paths that are reminiscent of those used in max-flow algorithms. For {\em series-parallel} (SP) graphs, the PRA becomes independent of the network topology and its size. As a result of independent interest, we prove that for SP networks with deterministic delays, Wardrop equilibria {\em maximize} the shortest-path objective among all feasible flows.

Abstract:Modeling transportation network as a stochastic and time-dependent network has become a trend. Instead of exploring the dynamic of the stochastic and time-dependent properties of transportation networks, a majority of the literature treat the statistical distribution of the transportation network as a fixed function and try to find an optimal path or an optimal routing policy. In this paper, we analyze the transportation network from the perspective of game theory and try to find the driven force that sharpens the stochastic and time-dependent properties of transportation network. We model the travel time as a random process that is determined not only by the length of the corresponding link, but also by the number of drivers that are traveling on this link. Based on this modeling method, we model the path selection process of all the drivers in the network as a non-cooperative game, where all the drivers try to maximize their utility function by selecting a path that is emanating from their points of departure to their destinations. A day-to-day repeated game process is addressed and a formal definition of Nash equilibrium is also given. At last, the main contributions of this paper is summarized and the future work is discussed.

Abstract:To explain day-to-day (DTD) route-choice behaviors and traffic dynamics observed in a series of lab experiments, Part I of this research proposed a discrete choice-based analytical dynamic model (Qi et al., 2023). Although the deterministic model could well reproduce the experimental observations, it converges to a stable equilibrium of route flow while the observed DTD evolution is apparently with random oscillations. To overcome the limitation, the paper proposes a route-dependent attraction-based stochastic process (RDAB-SP) model based on the same behavioral assumptions in Part I of this research. Through careful comparison between the model-based estimation and experimental observations, it is demonstrated that the proposed RDAB-SP model can accurately reproduce the random oscillations both in terms of flow switching and route flow evolution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to explain and model experimental observations by using stochastic process DTD models, and it is interesting to find that the seemingly unanticipated phenomena (i.e., random route switching behavior) is actually dominated by simple rules, i.e., independent and probability-based route-choice behavior. Finally, an approximated model is developed to help simulate the stochastic process and evaluate the equilibrium distribution in a simple and efficient manner, making the proposed model a useful and practical tool in transportation policy design.

Abstract:We study the routing policy choice problems in a stochastic time-dependent (STD) network. A routing policy is defined as a decision rule applied at the end of each link that maps the realized traffic condition to the decision on the link to take next. Two types of routing policy choice models are formulated with perfect online information (POI): recursive logit model and non-recursive logit model. In the non-recursive model, a choice set of routing policies between an origin-destination (OD) pair is generated, and a probabilistic choice is modeled at the origin, while the choice of the next link at each link is a deterministic execution of the chosen routing policy. In the recursive model, the probabilistic choice of the next link is modeled at each link, following the framework of dynamic discrete choice models. The two models are further compared in terms of computational efficiency in estimation and prediction, and flexibility in systematic utility specification and modeling correlation.

Stochastic Shortest Path Problem with Failure Probability

Abstract:We solve a sequential decision-making problem under uncertainty that takes into account the failure probability of a task. This problem cannot be handled by the stochastic shortest path problem, which is the standard model for sequential decision-making. This problem is addressed by introducing dead-ends. Conventionally, we only consider policies that minimize the probability of task failure, so the optimal policy constructed could be overly conservative. In this paper, we address this issue by expanding the search range to a class of policies whose failure probability is less than a desired threshold. This problem can be solved by treating it as a framework of a Bayesian Markov decision process and a two-person zero-sum game. Also, it can be seen that the optimal policy is expressed in the form of a probability distribution on a set of deterministic policies. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods by applying them to a motion planning problem with obstacle avoidance for a moving robot.

Abstract:This paper develops a convex programming approach with a truncated path choice model to resolve a fundamental drawback of conventional stochastic user equilibrium (SUE) models; that is, assign strictly positive flow to a path, irrespective of the length of its travel time . The centerpiece of the truncated path choice model is to truncate the path choice probability to zero when the travel time exceeds travelers' maximum acceptable travel time , while the choice probabilities of other paths follow the utility maximization principle. Although the truncated path choice model has a non-smooth expression, the truncated SUE condition can be equivalently formulated as a twice-differentiable convex mathematical programming (MP), which has a simple structure comparable to that of Fisk's MP formulation of the multinomial logit SUE model. Moreover, the origin–destination pair-specific parameter of the maximum acceptable travel time, which is explicitly expressed in the truncated path choice model, is endogenized and implicit in the devised MP formulation. This substantially decreases the computational effort required for parameter calibration. The desirable MP formulation enables us to establish the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium path flow under mild assumptions and to develop convergent and efficient solution algorithms. Specifically, we develop a path-based gradient projection algorithm incorporating an Armijo-type Barzilai-Borwein step size scheme for solving the truncated SUE model. Numerical results demonstrate the validity of the truncated SUE model and the efficiency and robustness of the devised algorithm.

Abstract:Routing service considering uncertainty is at the core of intelligent transportation systems and has attracted increasing attention. Existing stochastic shortest path models require the exact probability distributions of travel times and usually assume that they are independent. However, the distributions are often unavailable or inaccurate due to insufficient data, and correlation of travel times over different links has been observed. This paper presents a robust shortest path (RSP) model that only requires partial distribution information of travel times, including the support set, mean, variance, and correlation matrix. We introduce a concept of robust mean-excess travel time to hedge against the risk from both the uncertainty of the random travel times and the uncertainty in their distributions. To solve the RSP problem, an equivalent dual formulation is derived and used to design tight lower and upper bound approximation methods, which adopt the scenario approach and semi-definite programming approach, respectively. To solve large problems, we further propose an efficient primal approximation method, which only needs to solve two deterministic shortest path problems and a mean-standard deviation shortest path problem, and analyze its approximation performance. Experiments validate the tightness of the proposed bounds and demonstrate the impact of uncertainty on the relative benefit and cost of robust paths.

Abstract:We explore an extension of nonatomic routing games that we call Markov decision process routing games where each agent chooses a transition policy between nodes in a network rather than a path from an origin node to a destination node, i.e. each agent in the population solves a Markov decision process rather than a shortest path problem. We define the appropriate version of a Wardrop equilibrium as well as a potential function for this game in the finite horizon (total reward) case. This work can be thought of as a routing-game-based formulation of continuous population stochastic games (mean-field games or anonymous sequential games). We apply our model to the problem of ridesharing drivers competing for customers.

Abstract:Stochastic User Equilibrium (SUE) models depict the perception differences in traffic assignment problems. According to the assumption of an unbounded perceived travel time distribution, the conventional SUE problems result in a positive choice probability for all available routes, regardless of their unappealing travel time. This study provides an eUnit-SUE model to relax this assumption. The eUnit model is derived from a bounded probability distribution. This closed-form model aligns with an exponentiated random utility maximization (ERUM) paradigm with the exponentiated uniform distributed random error, where the lower and upper bounds endogeneously determine the route usage. Specifically, a Beckmann-type mathematical programming formulation is presented for the eUnit-SUE problem. The equivalency and uniqueness properties are rigorously proven. Numerical examples reveal that the eUnit bound range between the lower and upper bounds greatly affects the SUE assignment results. A larger bound range increases not only the number of routes in the choice set but also the degree of dispersion in the assignment results due to a larger route-specific perception variance. The misperception is contingent upon the disparity between the shortest and longest travel times and the bounds. As the bound range decreases, the shortest route receives significant flow allocation, and the assignment result approaches the deterministic user equilibrium (DUE) flow pattern.

Abstract:Indications and results are reviewed with regard to recent data on the effect of DTIC in patients with malignant melanoma, soft tissue sarcomas, Hodgkin's disease, gastrointestinal carcinomas and oat cell cancer of the lung. Whilst this drug induced--mainly partial--remissions in 25% of the patients with melanomas, it is generally used in other malignant conditions in combination with other cytoxic agents. In soft tissue sarcomas adriamycin appeared as the principal additional drug. In patients with Hodgkin's disease resistant to MOPP treatment and requiring additional cytotoxic drugs, combination chemotherapy including DTIC may induce remissions in more than half of these patients. Other schedules were, however, also effective and results in this difficult group of patients are discussed and compared. In gastrointestinal and in oat cell carcinomas cytotoxic protocols including DTIC have shown some effect, perhaps comparable to other combinations usually employed in these conditions.
Modeling Departure Time Choice under Stochastic Networks Involved in Network Design

Abstract:Different travel cost functions for modeling travelers’ departure time and route choice behavior under uncertainty are investigated; then the principal equivalency of the mean-variance and scheduling approaches in modeling departure time choice is proven analytically. Based on the equivalency, a general cost function is formulated for modeling travelers’ departure time and route choice behavior under uncertainty and applied to an analysis of the departure patterns under uncertainty and a reliability-based dynamic network design problem. The analytical investigation of the departure pattern considering travel time reliability in the individual's travel cost function is presented as an extension of Vickrey's deterministic bottleneck model toward stochastic capacities. The departure pattern is significantly different from that without reliability: travelers depart earlier to reduce travel time variability. This finding (corroborated by simulations) motivated the network design approach including travel time reliability in departure time and route choice behavior. A discrete dynamic network design problem is formulated subject to a reliability-based dynamic user equilibrium, with the cost function derived from the equivalency analysis among different cost functions. Total network costs–the costs of total travel (including travel time reliability) and construction–are minimized. The network design problem consists of optimally allocating link capacities by determining the optimal numbers of lanes for a subset or a full set of links of a potential network. A genetic algorithm with some intelligence is adopted to solve the discrete optimization problem. Use of a small hypothetical network indicates that different network designs may lead to diverse departure distributions among different origin-destination (O-D) pairs over time, directly affecting travel costs. Relatively dissimilar departure patterns among different O-D pairs over time give lower travel costs.
