Abstract:The kinetics of the reactions of H3O+, NO+, O2+• and O-• with n-hexane, 3-methylpentane, 2,5-dimethylhexane and 2,3-dimethylheptane were studied experimentally under several selected ion flow tube (SIFT) conditions: in a Profile 3 instrument in He and N2 carrier gases at 300 K and in the Voice200 instrument in N2 carrier gas at 300 and 393 K - where the effect of the extraction lens voltage was also assessed. It was found that H3O+ ions react by association forming adduct ions along with dissociative reactions forming [M-H]+ product ions at reaction rates which are slower than collisional. NO+ ions react via hydride ion transfer. O2+• ions react via charge transfer followed by fragmentation that is highly sensitive to the temperature and the ion extraction lens voltage. Negative ions did not react, except for the O-• ion which reacted via an associative detachment process. Computational analysis using Density Functional Theory (DFT) provided insights into the exothermicities and exergodicities of these reactions. A notable result is that proton transfer from H3O+ does not take place despite its potential exothermicity; this is important for the interpretation of proton transfer reaction (PTR) and SIFT mass spectrometry data.

Abstract:Ionic species in atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) play an important role in plasma-surface and plasma-liquid interactions, nonetheless, they have not received the same attention as their neutral reactive species counterparts. In this work, a molecular beam mass spectrometer (MBMS) was used to characterize the ion compositions in the effluent of an APPJ operating in ambient air for different feed gases including Ar + O2, Ar + air and Ar + H2O mixtures inspired by gas compositions used for biomedical applications. Changes in compositions of positive and negative ions as a function of nozzle-to-substrate distance along the plasma plume were analyzed and compared with a pseudo-1D plug flow model. Positive and negative ions were detected up to distances of 12 mm from the visible plasma plume tip. The measurements enable to follow the ion conversion pathways in the effluent of the APPJs as a function of distance from the nozzle. The trends in ion yield obtained from a pseudo-1D plug flow model showed generally a good agreement with the experimentally observed trends after addition of ionic reactions to the previously reported reaction set but also some distinctive differences were observed. The dominant positive ions in the far effluent are water ion clusters, the most stable ion for all gas mixtures investigated, while a large variety of negative ions was found for different gas mixtures.

Abstract:Abstract We investigated capacitively coupled Ar/C 2 H 2 RF plasmas with a 1D fluid model that couples a 13.56 MHz discharge module, a long timescale chemical module and a flow transport module. A new solution procedure was developed in order to accurately describe the coupling between the short timescale discharge dynamics and the long characteristic time processes that play a major role in the molecular growth of reactive species. The plasma was simulated for different inlet gas configurations and flowrates. We showed that for a showerhead configuration one may distinguish two situations. For short residence time the plasma was strongly electronegative in the very center of the discharge gap and dominated by large hydrocarbon positive and negative ions. In this situation the acetylene conversion, although moderate, lead to a significant molecular growth. For long residence time, although C 2 H 2 underwent a total conversion, the products of the primary C 2 H 2 dissociation process were consumed by surface deposition which reduced drastically the molecular growth in the short gap discharge considered here. Whatever the conditions, we confirmed the key-role of Ar* in the acetylene conversion, ionization kinetics as well as the subsequent molecular growth for neutral and charged species. We also showed that remote feed gas and showerhead configurations predicted similar results at low flowrate. At larger flowrate the two configurations presented some discrepancy. Especially H 2 density was much larger for the remote feed gas configuration, which affected the overall plasma behavior. Our results highlight that realistic gas-flow models are essential for an accurate description of acetylene conversion in Ar/C 2 H 2 plasma.

Mechanism of [m+h]+ formation in atmospheric pressure photoionization mass spectrometry: identification of propionitrile in acetonitrile with high mass accuracy measurement and tandem mass spectrometry and evidence for its involvement in the protonation phenomenon

Abstract:The role of propionitrile in the production of [M+H]+ under atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) was investigated. In dopant-assisted APPI using acetone and anisole, protonated acetone and anisole radical cations were the most prominent ions observed. In dopant-free or direct APPI in acetonitrile, however, a major ion in acetonitrile was detected and identified as propionitrile, using high accuracy mass measurement and collision induced dissociation studies. Vaporizing ca. 10(-5) M althiazide and bendroflumethazide under direct APPI in acetonitrile produced their corresponding protonated species [M+H]+. In addition to protonated acetonitrile, its dimers, and acetonitrile/water clusters, protonated propionitrile, propionitrile dimer, and propionitrile/water clusters were also observed. The role of propionitrile, an impurity in acetonitrile and/or a possible product of ion-molecule reaction, in the production of [M+H]+ of althiazide and bendroflumethazide was further investigated in the absence of dopant using propionitrile-d5. The formation of [M+D]+ species was observed, suggesting a possible role of propionitrile in the protonation process. Additionally, an increase in the [M+H]+ signal of althiazide and bendroflumethazide was observed as a function of propionitrile concentration in acetonitrile. Theoretical data from the literature supported the assumption that one possible mechanism, among others, for the formation of [M+H]+ could be attributed to photo-initiated isomerization of propionitrile. The most stable isomers of propionitrile, based on their calculated ionization energy (IE) and relative energy (DeltaE), were assumed to undergo proton transfer to the analytes, and mechanisms were proposed.

Abstract:Many applications involving plasma–liquid interactions depend on the reactive processes occurring at the plasma–liquid interface. We report on a falling liquid film plasma reactor allowing for in situ optical absorption measurements of the time-dependence of the ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox reactivity, complemented with ex situ measurement of the decomposition of formate. We found excellent agreement between the measured decomposition percentages and the diffusion-limited decomposition of formate by interfacial plasma-enabled reactions, except at high pH in thin liquid films, indicating the involvement of previously unexplored plasma-induced liquid phase chemistry enabled by long-lived reactive species. We also determined that high pH facilitates a reduction-favoring environment in ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox solutions. In situ conversion measurements of a 1:1 ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox mixture exceed the measured ex situ conversion and show that conversion of a 1:1 ferricyanide/ferrocyanide mixture is strongly dependent on film thickness. We identified three dominant processes: reduction faster than ms time scales for film thicknesses >100 μm, •OH-driven oxidation on time scales of <10 ms, and reduction on 15 ms time scales for film thickness <100 μm. We attribute the slow reduction and larger formate decomposition at high pH to HO2− formed from plasma-produced H2O2 enabled by the high pH at the plasma–liquid interface as confirmed experimentally and by computed reaction rates of HO2− with ferricyanide. Overall, this work demonstrates the utility of liquid film reactors in enabling the discovery of new plasma-interfacial chemistry and the utility of atmospheric plasmas for electrodeless electrochemistry.

Gas-phase ion mobility of protonated aldehydes in helium measured using a selected ion flow-drift tube

Abstract:Rationale: In soft chemical ionization mass spectrometry, analyte ions are produced via ion-molecule reactions in the reactor. When an electric field E is imposed, the ion drift velocity vd determines the reaction time and the effective ion temperature. Agreement between experimental ion mobilities and theoretical predictions confirms the accuracy of the ion residence time measurement procedure. Methods: A selected ion flow-drift tube (SIFDT), an instrument with a chemical ionization source, was used to produce protonated aldehydes and selectively inject them into the resistive glass drift tube filled with He. Arrival-time distributions of ions were obtained using the Hadamard modulation. Reduced ion mobilities were then obtained at a pressure of 2 hPa in the E/N range of 5-15 Td. Theoretical ion mobility values were calculated using two methods: hard-sphere approximation and trajectory modelling. Results: The measured mobilities of three saturated and three unsaturated protonated aldehydes do not show substantial variation across the studied E/N range. Effective temperatures calculated using the Wannier formula from measured gas temperatures ranged from 300 to 315 K. Experimentally obtained values of the near-zero- E/N-reduced ion mobilities agree with both methods of calculations typically within ±3% standard deviation (maximum ±5%). Conclusions: The experimental SIFDT values of reduced mobilities in He of protonated aldehyde molecules generated from a chemical ionization source are in close agreement with two different theoretical methods based on the density functional theory calculations of ion geometries and partial atomic charges. Besides its fundamental importance, the ion mobility results validate the correct operation of the drift tube reactor and the ion residence time measurement procedure. Diffusion losses can also be determined from these results.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel method to ionize molecules or molecular clusters by proton transfer at temperatures below 1 K. The method yields nascent ions and largely eliminates secondary reactions, even for notoriously "delicate" molecules. Protonation is achieved inside liquid helium nanodroplets (HNDs) and begins with the formation of (H$_{2}$)$_{m}$H$^{+}$ ions as the proton donors. In a separate and subsequent step the HNDs are doped with a proton acceptor molecule, X. Proton transfer occurs between X and the cold proton donor ions inside a helium droplet, an approach that avoids the large excess energy that is released if HNDs are first doped and then ionized. Mass spectra, recorded after stripping excess helium and hydrogen in a collision cell, show that this method offers a new way to determine proton affinities of molecules and clusters by proton-transfer bracketing, to investigate astrochemically relevant ion-molecule reactions at sub-kelvin temperatures, and to prepare XH$^{+}$ ions that are suitable for messenger-tagging action spectroscopy.

Abstract:The discharge structure of inductively coupled plasma is studied via fluid simulation and analytic theory collaboration. At low pressure, the discharge is stratified by the double layer, which is modelled as dipole moment. The parabolic profile is formed in the discharge core when recombination loss is negligible and both the electron and anions are the Boltzmann balanced. At increasing the pressure, the main characteristics, i.e., parabolic, elliptic and flat-topped profile, are experienced, predicted by the simulation and analytics. Self-coagulation is accompanied at all considered pressures. It is more a chemistry process and provides new means of constricting plasma. At its influence, electron density deviates from the Boltzmann equilibrium. For satisfying the neutrality of bulk plasma, the ambi-polar self-coagulation mechanism is suggested. At high pressure, the self-coagulation-to-coil scheme causes the mass point behavior in the plasma. Minor cations re-self-coagulate at certain conditions and the correlation with the celestial bodies formation is hypothesized.

Abstract:A proof-of-concept study of the utilization of a single mass spectrometer for qualitative molecular analysis as well as for quantitative metal determination is described. This was performed with an argon microwave plasma as ion source coupled to an ion trap mass spectrometer. A microwave induced plasma with tuneable power and gas flow rate was loaded with dried nebulized sample solutions. The commercially available plasma torch was slightly modified to allow the introduction of the sample in different regions of the plasma. Using soft settings, organic compounds introduced in the plasma plume could be detected as protonated molecular ions. Under harsher conditions, elemental analysis was demonstrated for several metals. Lead could be determined with a limit of detection of 150 nM. Minor on-the-fly adjustments of the power, flow rate and sampling distance allowed a mild fragmentation of organic compounds. Ionization differences observed were rationalized by emission spectroscopy and excitation and rotational temperatures were determined. Simultaneous determination of elemental and molecular information was demonstrated for a rubidium-crown-ether complex. The maximum argon gas consumption for these tasks was below 2 L·min-1 and the maximal power used was 90 W.

Abstract:The ion beam extracted from a proton ion source contains H + ion along with H 2 + and H 3 + molecular ions. In this work, the ionic fractions in the extracted beam of ECR ion source were measured using an analyzing magnet. A computerized proton fraction measurement setup is described in detail with instrumentation and control for pulsed operation of the ECR ion source. A timing diagram has been incorporated for trigger synchronization illustrating the process of pulsing the plasma, controlling the analyzing magnet parameters and acquiring data about the magnetic field and beam current. The proton fraction was measured in two cases, in the first case using SS304 plasma chamber and in the second case incorporating aluminium (Al) cylinder and boron nitride (BN) plates inside the plasma chamber. In the first case, the proton fraction was found to be in the range of ∼60% and in the second case because of the presence of secondary electron donors it increased to 93%. In order to understand the enhancement of H + fraction in the hydrogen plasma, plasma parameters (n e , T e and EEDF) and its dependence on microwave power and neutral gas pressure were investigated.

Abstract:The tubular plasma reactor was designed for the continuous surface modification of fine powders in non-equilibrium RF discharges. So far, little has been known about the plasma characteristics of this inductively coupled reactor system. Therefore, moderate pressure argon?oxygen discharges, commonly used for powder processing, are investigated with tailor-made probe techniques. The influence of plasma power, system pressure, gas composition and mean gas velocity on the axial profiles of plasma parameters was studied. Electron temperature and positive ion density profiles were measured with a Langmuir double probe and the energy influx due to the plasma was determined by a new type of calorimetric probe. The limits for the E?H-mode transition are provided and photographs of the discharge are presented to illustrate the relationship between process parameters and plasma characteristics. Both, ion density and energy influx increased with rising plasma power. The axial energy influx profiles were in addition strongly influenced by the mean gas velocity. Based on these profiles the maximum transient particle temperature was calculated as a function of the particle diameter. Particle temperatures in the order of 100??C were estimated, whereas the thermal load of the substrates rises with increasing plasma power, residence time and pressure.

Abstract:Hollow cathode discharges (HCD) are capable of generating dense plasmas and have been used for development of high-rate, low-pressure, high-efficiency processing machines. The geometric feature of a HCD promotes oscillations of hot electrons inside the cathode, thereby enhancing ionization, ion bombardment of inner walls and other subsequent processes. At the same power the hollow cathode exhibits plasma density one to two orders of magnitude higher than that of conventional planar electrodes. The aim of the present studies was to obtain experimental observations about the main features of a dc hollow cathode discharge in order to evaluate its capability of generating compounds in the plasma medium, by reaction between sputtered species from the cathode and radicals from the gas discharge. Especial interest is focused on aluminum nitride (AlN) formation which is very desirable if a deposition of thin film of this material is concerned. Plasma properties were inferred from the current-voltage characteristics of a single Langmuir probe positioned at the inter-cathode space. Through mass spectrometry technique some species in the plasma gas phase could be monitored for various operating conditions of the discharge. This mass analysis together with the probe measurements gives guidance for optimization of AlN generation in the discharge consequently for deposition of thin films of this material.
Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry as a Tool to Understand Hydride Atomization and the Fate of Free Analyte Atoms in an Externally Heated Quartz Tube Atomizer

Abstract:Hydride atomization and the fate of free analyte atoms in an externally heated quartz tube atomizer (QTA) were investigated employing selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS). SIFT-MS proved to be ideally suited to study water concentration in gases leaving the atomizer. This made it possible to quantify the oxygen "contaminant" flow rate to QTA as 0.04-0.05 mL min-1. This is valid for typical conditions of hydride generation. Most significantly, studies of temperature influence on water concentration resulted in detailed insight into hydrogen radical-forming reactions between oxygen and hydrogen. Minimum QTA temperatures required to generate hydrogen radicals under a variety of different flow rates and compositions of the QTA atmosphere were found to be in the range between 585 and 800 °C. The ability of SIFT-MS to detect extremely low concentrations of arsane and selane was employed to quantify the fraction of As and Se removed from the QTA in the form of hydride in dependence on QTA temperature under typical conditions of hydride generation. It was found that free As atoms formed by atomization of arsane decay to different species than to arsane. In the case of selane under typical atomization conditions, the efficiency of the decay of free Se atoms to selane was between 50 and 100% in dependence on actual flow rates and compositions of the QTA atmosphere.
Numerical investigation of the effect of variation of gas mixture ratio on density distribution of etchant species (Br, Br+, Cl, Cl+, and H) in HBr/Cl2/Ar plasma discharge

Abstract:A self-sustained fluid model is used to study the effect of variation of noble gas fraction (Ar) and variation of gas mixture ratio (HBr/Cl2/Ar) on density distribution of important etchant species (Br, Br+, Cl, Cl+, and H) in HBr/Cl2/Ar capacitive coupled plasma discharge that is being vastly used for dry etching of Si, GaAs, GaSb and other group III and IV semiconductor materials. A comprehensive set of 80 reactions in this plasma discharge is presented which contains electron impact reactions, neutral–neutral reactions, ion–ion reactions, and charge transfer reactions. Based on simulation results, it is found that densities of neutral species have normal distribution curve; density is higher at center of the reactor and decreases as we move towards electrode surface, while densities of charged species follow bimodal distribution in which peaks occur near electrodes. Furthermore, the addition of Ar in HBr/Cl2 causes electron density to increase which promotes ionization and dissociation. It was found that at constant supply of Cl2 gas, by increasing Ar fraction (HBr/Cl2/Ar from 80/10/10 to 10/10/80) densities of Br, Br+ and H will go down and at constant supply of Ar gas, raising Cl2 fraction in feedback gases (HBr/Cl2/Ar from 70/20/10 to 20/70/10) promoted the production of Cl and Cl+ while densities of Br, Br+, and H are dropped-off. Hence, densities and fluxes of important etchant species – for chemical vs. physical etching – can be controlled by tuning of mixture ratio.

Abstract:Electron heating and ionization dynamics in capacitively coupled radio frequency (RF) atmospheric pressure microplasmas operated in helium are investigated by particle-in-cell simulations and semi-analytical modeling. A strong heating of electrons and ionization in the plasma bulk due to high bulk electric fields are observed at distinct times within the RF period. Based on the model the electric field is identified to be a drift field caused by a low electrical conductivity due to the high electron–neutral collision frequency at atmospheric pressure. Thus, the ionization is mainly caused by ohmic heating in this ‘Ω-mode’. The phase of strongest bulk electric field and ionization is affected by the driving voltage amplitude. At high amplitudes, the plasma density is high, so that the sheath impedance is comparable to the bulk resistance. Thus, voltage and current are about 45° out of phase and maximum ionization is observed during sheath expansion with local maxima at the sheath edges. At low driving voltages, the plasma density is low and the discharge becomes more resistive, resulting in a smaller phase shift of about 4°. Thus, maximum ionization occurs later within the RF period with a maximum at the discharge center. Significant analogies to electronegative low-pressure macroscopic discharges operated in the drift-ambipolar mode are found, where similar mechanisms induced by a high electronegativity instead of a high collision frequency have been identified.

Proton Transfer Processes in Interstellar Molecular Clusters under Synchrotron VUV Radiation: Taking Acrylonitrile and Acetonitrile Dimers As Example

Abstract:Acrylonitrile (ALN) and acetonitrile (ATN) are two important interstellar molecules that contain nitrogen atoms. Herein, we explore the proton transfer processes occurring in gaseous clusters of ALN and ATN molecules with the aid of synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation. We investigated the proton transfer phenomenon by use of time-of-flight mass spectrometry as well as theoretical calculations. We observe that the mass spectra of ALN and ATN clusters are apparently different from each other. In the mass spectrum of ALN clusters, the peaks related to un-protonated cluster cations are dominant. Unlike the ALN clusters, the protonated cluster cations are dominant in the mass spectrum of ATN clusters. These results are attributed to the different conjugate and hyperconjugate molecular structures in ALN and ATN, respectively. Theoretical calculations show that the conjugation effect between the pi(C=C) orbital and pi(C=N) orbital in ALN induces a high proton transfer barrier that determines the dominant peaks of its non-protonated clusters cations. Conversely, the hyperconjugation between the sigma(C alpha-H) and pi(C=N) orbital in the ATN molecule determines that the proton transfer process in ATN is a low-barrier or even a no-barrier process. This favors the formation of protonated clusters. The present results reveal that ALN clusters are more aprotic than those consisting of ATN, and a relative high energy barrier is needed to surmount the proton transfer process of ALN clusters. This property of ALN makes it an appropriate candidate molecule to form the membrane alternative in the liquid methane lakes of Titan. ATN is not an appropriate candidate.
Low-temperature growth processes with helicon radio-frequency plasmas. TiO2 films and Pt/C nano-clusters

Abstract:Low-field helicon radiofrequency plasmas at low pressure can generate large ion fluxes which can be used in a variety of processes (direct or assisted reactive sputtering, carbon nanofibre growth, catalytic cluster deposition). Applications include plasma-induced crystallisation of TiO2 thin films1, enhanced catalytic activity of hydrogen fuel cell electrodes2 and ion beam formation for electrode-less plasma thrusters3. Large ion densities (over 7x1016 m-3) lead to the formation of nanocrystalline (~15 nm) rutile phase TiO2. The post-annealing treatment of the films in air at 300 °C induces the complete crystallization of the amorphous films to nanocrystals of anatase (~40 nm) while the rutile films shows no significant change meaning that they are already fully crystallized by the plasma process. Low temperature processes combining the growth of carbon nanofibres in CH4/H2 plasmas subsequently coated with 4 nm size platinum nanoclusters improve hydrogen fuel cell efficiency for constant catalytic loading. More recently, efficient fuel cell electrodes containing monoatomic, bimetallic and trimetallic Pt-based nanoclusters have been synthesized by magnetron co-deposition and a gas-condensation technique. Finally, large area high velocity ion beams can also be generated in helicon plasmas using an extended range of operating gases. The thrust components generated by such helicon plasma device have been measured and a space thruster prototype (including rf sub-systems) has been developed.
