Abstract:Multifunctional skin-like sensors play an important role in next-generation healthcare, robotics, and bioelectronics. Here, we report a skin-like wearable optical sensor (SLWOS) enabled by a stretchable, flexible, and attachable patch embedded with an optical micro-/nanofibre (MNF), which is highly compatible with human skin, a curved surface, or cloth. Based on the transition from radiation modes into guided modes around the bending area of the MNF, the SLWOS embedded with a wavy MNF is highly sensitive to weak strain, achieving a gauge factor as large as 675 (strain <1%). The flexible SLWOS is also capable of monitoring the bending angle in a broad dynamic range with tunable sensitivity. In addition, temperature measurements in the range of -20 to 130 degrees C are realized by taking advantage of PDMS's large negative thermo-optic coefficient. The superior sensing performance together with mechanical flexibility enables the real-time monitoring of respiration, arm motion, and body temperature. This SLWOS will have great potential in wearable optical devices ranging from ultrasensitive sensors to photonic healthcare devices.

Abstract:Dynamic glucose monitoring is important to reduce the risk of metabolic diseases such as diabetes. Wearable biosensors based on organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have been developed due to their excellent signal amplification capabilities and biocompatibility. However, traditional wearable biosensors are fabricated on flat substrates with limited gas permeability, resulting in the inefficient evaporation of sweat, reduced wear comfort, and increased risk of inflammation. Here, we proposed breathable OECT-based glucose sensors by designing a porous structure to realize optimal breathable and stretchable properties. The gas permeability of the device and the relationship between electrical properties under different tensile strains were carefully investigated. The OECTs exhibit exceptional electrical properties (gm ~1.51 mS and Ion ~0.37 mA) and can retain up to about 44% of their initial performance even at 30% stretching. Furthermore, obvious responses to glucose have been demonstrated in a wide range of concentrations (10-7-10-4 M) even under 30% strain, where the normalized response to 10-4 M is 26% and 21% for the pristine sensor and under 30% strain, respectively. This work offers a new strategy for developing advanced breathable and wearable bioelectronics.

Abstract:In wearable electronics, to acquire stability and simultaneously preserve stretchability, sensitivity, and scalability is of high significance yet challenging for practical device applications. In this work, a kirigami-structured graphene-polymer hybrid nanocomposite is proposed for strain sensors by a laser direct writing technique on a polyimide sheet. Using such kirigami structures, the strain in the sensor material can be drastically reduced in the circumstances of high stretching conditions. To protect the device, ecoflex polymer is applied as the passivation layer. Depending on the applications, ecoflex grid-wrapped and film-encapsulated devices are realized with high stretchability (>200% strain) and sensitivity (>80% resistance change at 60% strain), respectively. Significantly, this sensor platform presents almost no performance degradation even after >60 000 stretching cycle tests due to less strain within the sensor. Furthermore, as proof-of-concept for human-interactive applications, motion detection and respiration monitoring with a breathing period of 3-4 s for a comparatively long duration (>2 hours) are successfully demonstrated. These facile, scalable, highly stable and stretchable strain sensors afford a new route towards next-generation reliable skin-inspired wearable electronics.

Abstract:Laser-scribed graphene (LSG), with programmable patterns and superior electronic properties, has attracted considerable attention and has been widely investigated for various wearable electronics. However, its characteristics such as easy peeling and weak stretchability have prevented it from further industrial applications. Herein, this work has demonstrated a durable, biodegradable, skin-conformable LSG-based strain sensor by using a transfer technology and the dehydration characteristic of a commercial make-up accessory (nose film colloid), which has been declared as a pollution-free and skin-friendly flexible substrate. The sensor exhibits relatively high sensitivity of a gauge factor over 1200, large stretch range of more than 70% and stable piezoresistance responses after 5000 cyclic tests. It has an admirable durability that can maintain a stable resistance after rubbing and scratching of sandpaper, and a biodegradability that can be totally dissolved within a few minutes. A series of human computer interaction applications, such as music glove, have been presented to prove the availability and sweat permeability of the sensor. The environmentally friendly properties of the sensor and the printable fabrication process reveal the possibility of the large-scale preparation of the flexible strain sensor.

Abstract:Laser-induced graphene prepared on polymer substrates with a high modulus is a widely applied method to fabricate varied flexible electronics; however, the resulting relatively poor stretchability considerably limits its applicability. In this paper, an elastic composite consisting of poly(ether–ether–ketone) powder and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) is reported to fabricate stretchable electrodes using direct laser-induced graphitization without transferring. The liquid composites before curing can be cast into various shapes for different applications. To balance the conductivity and stretchability of stretchable electrodes, we optimized the composite mass ratios and laser parameters and performed a series of morphological and performance characterizations on the composites; furthermore, we analyzed the elemental composition and functional groups of the laser-induced products. With the proper encapsulating method, strain sensors were prepared, exhibiting high sensitivity (a gauge factor of 78) and a stable resistance response over 50% operating range with the ability to monitor both fine pulse beats and larger strains such as human joint movement. Furthermore, a humidity sensor composited with laser-patterned interdigital electrode and graphene oxide on the elastic composite substrate had characteristics of high sensitivity (14.18 pF/%RH) and fast recovery time (9 s), which could be used for breathing monitoring and noncontact sensing. In conclusion, laser-induced graphene prepared in one step on a stretchable composite film of polymers with a high modulus and low modulus is a promising method to fabricate wearable electronics.

Abstract:A high‐performance copper oxide (CuO)/laser‐engraved graphene (LEG) based non‐enzymatic glucose sensor is prepared by laser direct writing method. The CuO/LEG sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 619.43 μA mm−1 cm−2 in 0–3 mm glucose and 462.96 μA mm−1 cm−2 in 0–8 mm glucose. Moreover, the CuO/LEG sensor also shows good selectivity, reproducibility, long‐term stability, and bending stability. Accurate and convenient detection of human blood glucose levels is an effective method for early diagnosis of diabetes and prevention of complications. The flexible and wearable electrochemical glucose sensor with low cost, fast responsiveness, good stability, reliability, and high sensitivity has attracted much attention in monitoring glucose concentration. The preparation of a conductive layer with catalytic activity on a flexible substrate is the key to making a wearable glucose sensor. Here, graphene composite materials sintered with copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles are successfully prepared on a polyimide film by laser direct writing method and fabricated a flexible non‐enzymatic glucose sensor using laser‐engraved graphene (LEG) as a conductive electrode. The CuO/LEG sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 619.43 μA mm−1 cm−2 in 0–3 mm glucose and 462.96 μA mm−1 cm−2 in 0–8 mm glucose. In addition, the CuO/LEG sensor shows good reproducibility, high anti‐interference capability, and long‐term stability. It also presents good bending stability, which can maintain 82.40% initial current after 100 times bending. Moreover, the CuO/LEG sensor has an obvious step‐ampere response in the detection of sweat samples, indicating the great potential of wearable sweat sensors.
All-Fiber Flexible Electrochemical Sensor for Wearable Glucose Monitoring

Abstract:Wearable sensors, specifically microneedle sensors based on electrochemical methods, have expanded extensively with recent technological advances. Today's wearable electrochemical sensors present specific challenges: they show significant modulus disparities with skin tissue, implying possible discomfort in vivo, especially over extended wear periods or on sensitive skin areas. The sensors, primarily based on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polyimide (PI) substrates, might also cause pressure or unease during insertion due to the skin's irregular deformation. To address these constraints, we developed an innovative, wearable, all-fiber-structured electrochemical sensor. Our composite sensor incorporates polyurethane (PU) fibers prepared via electrospinning as electrode substrates to achieve excellent adaptability. Electrospun PU nanofiber films with gold layers shaped via thermal evaporation are used as base electrodes with exemplary conductivity and electrochemical catalytic attributes. To achieve glucose monitoring, gold nanofibers functionalized by gold nanoflakes (AuNFs) and glucose oxidase (GOx) serve as the working electrode, while Pt nanofibers and Ag/AgCl nanofibers serve as the counter and reference electrode. The acrylamide-sodium alginate double-network hydrogel synthesized on electrospun PU fibers serves as the adhesive and substance-transferring layer between the electrodes. The all-fiber electrochemical sensor is assembled layer-by-layer to form a robust structure. Given the stretchability of PU nanofibers coupled with a high specific surface area, the manufactured porous microneedle glucose sensor exhibits enhanced stretchability, superior sensitivity at 31.94 μA (lg(mM))-1 cm-2, a broad detection range (1-30 mM), and a significantly low detection limit (1 mM, S/N = 3), as well as satisfactory biocompatibility. Therefore, the novel electrochemical microneedle design is well-suited for wearable or even implantable continuous monitoring applications, thereby showing promising significant potential within the global arena of wearable medical technology.

Abstract:Flexible wearable strain sensors based on laser-induced graphene (LIG) have attracted significant interest due to their simple preparation process, three-dimensional porous structure, excellent electromechanical characteristics, and remarkable mechanical robustness. In this study, we demonstrated that LIG with various defects could be prepared on the surface of polyimide (PI) film, patterned in a single step by adjusting the scanning speed while maintaining a constant laser power of 12.4 W, and subjected to two repeated scans under ambient air conditions. The results indicated that LIG produced at a scanning speed of 70 mm/s exhibited an obvious stacked honeycomb micropore structure, and the flexible strain sensor fabricated with this material demonstrated stable resistance. The sensor exhibited high sensitivity within a low strain range of 0.4–8.0%, with the gauge factor (GF) reaching 107.8. The sensor demonstrated excellent stability and repeatable response at a strain of 2% after approximately 1000 repetitions. The flexible wearable LIG-based sensor with a serpentine bending structure could be used to detect various physiological signals, including pulse, finger bending, back of the hand relaxation and gripping, blinking eyes, smiling, drinking water, and speaking. The results of this study may serve as a reference for future applications in health monitoring, medical rehabilitation, and human–computer interactions.

Abstract:To enhance personalized diabetes management, there is a critical need for non-invasive wearable electrochemical sensors made from flexible materials to enable continuous monitoring of sweat glucose levels. The main challenge lies in developing glucose sensors with superior electrochemical characteristics and high adaptability. Herein, we present a wearable sensor for non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose analysis. The sensor was synthesized using hydrothermal and one-pot preparation methods, incorporating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) functionalized onto aminated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (AMWCNTs) as an efficient catalyst, and crosslinked with carboxylated styrene butadiene rubber (XSBR) and PEDOT:PSS. The sensors were then integrated onto screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) to create flexible glucose sensors (XSBR-PEDOT:PSS-AMWCNTs/AuNPs/SPE). Operating under neutral conditions, the sensor exhibits a linear range of 50 μmol/L to 600 μmol/L, with a limit of detection limit of 3.2 μmol/L (S/N = 3), enabling the detection of minute glucose concentrations. The flexible glucose sensor maintains functionality after 500 repetitions of bending at a 180° angle, without significant degradation in performance. Furthermore, the sensor exhibits exceptional stability, repeatability, and resistance to interference. Importantly, we successfully monitored changes in sweat glucose levels by applying screen-printed electrodes to human skin, with results consistent with normal physiological blood glucose fluctuations. This study details the fabrication of a wearable sensor characterized by ease of manufacture, remarkable flexibility, high sensitivity, and adaptability for non-invasive blood glucose monitoring through non-enzymatic electrochemical analysis. Thus, this streamlined fabrication process presents a novel approach for non-invasive, real-time blood glucose level monitoring.

Abstract:Wearable sensors based on nanomaterials have recently elicited keen research interest and potential for a new range of flexible devices. This paper presents a simple method for the preparation of laser‐induced porous graphene (LIG) and discusses its application in monitoring human vital signs. LIG formed on a polyimide (PI)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite material exhibits inherent high stretchability (over 30%), eliminating the need for transfer processes used in LIG prepared by laser scribing on PI films. LIG/CuSO4 composite materials, with different concentrations of Cu particles, show tunable mechanical and electronic properties based on laser‐induced graphene. The fabricated LIG demonstrates good cyclic stability and a nearly linear resistance response to tensile strain, making it suitable for wearable electronic devices, the maximum strain value and linear response to applied strain from 3% to 79%. The sensor exhibits a fast response time and high sensitivity, enabling real‐time detection of human pulse, joint motion, and complex dynamics. The multifunctionality advantages of LIG flexible sensor offer potential applications in next‐generation wearable electronics.

Abstract:Flexible and implantable glucose biosensors are emerging technologies for continuous monitoring of blood glucose of diabetes. Developing a flexible conductive substrates with high active surface area is critical for advancing the technology. Here, we successfully fabricate a flexible and highly sensitive nonenzymatic glucose by using DVD-laser scribed graphene (LSG) as a flexible conductively substrate. Copper nanoparticles (Cu-NPs) are electrodeposited as the catalyst. The LSG/Cu-NPs sensor demonstrates excellent catalytic activity toward glucose oxidation and exhibits a linear glucose detection range from 1 mu M to 4.54 mM with high sensitivity (1.518 mA mM(-1)cm(-2)) and low limit of detection (0.35 01). Moreover, the LSG/Cu-NPs sensor shows excellent reproducibility and long-term stability. It is also highly selective toward glucose oxidation under the presence of various interfering species. Excellent flexing stability is also demonstrated by the LSG/Cu-NPs sensor, which is capable of maintaining 83.9% of its initial current after being bent against a 4-mm diameter rod for 180 times. The LSG/Cu-NPs sensor shows great potential for practical application as a nonenzymatic glucose biosensor. Meanwhile, the LSG conductive substrate provides a platform for the developing next-generation flexible and potentially implantable bioelectronics and biosensors.
Spider-Web-Inspired Stretchable Graphene Woven Fabric for Highly Sensitive, Transparent, Wearable Strain Sensors

Abstract:Advanced wearable strain sensors with high sensitivity and stretchability are an essential component of flexible and soft electronic devices. Conventional metal- and semiconductor-based strain sensors are rigid, fragile, and opaque, restricting their applications in wearable electronics. Graphene-based percolative structures possess high flexibility and transparency but lack high sensitivity and stretchability. Inspired by the highly flexible spider web architecture, we propose semitransparent, ultrasensitive, and wearable strain sensors made from an elastomer-filled graphene woven fabric (E-GWF) for monitoring human physiological signals. The highly flexible elastomer microskeleton and the hierarchical structure of a graphene tube offer the strain sensor with both excellent sensing and switching capabilities. Two different types of E-GWF sensors, including freestanding E-GWF and E-GWF/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composites, are developed. When their structure is controlled and optimized, the E-GWF strain sensors simultaneously exhibit extraordinary characteristics, such as a high gauge factor (70 at 10% strain, which ascends to 282 at 20%) in respect to other semitransparent or transparent strain sensors, a broad sensing range up to 30%, and excellent linearity. The E-GWF/PDMS composite sensor shows a unique reversible switching behavior at a high strain level of 30-50%, making it a suitable material for fast and reversible strain switching required in many early warning systems. With a view to real-world applications of these sensors and switches, we demonstrate human motion detection and switch controls of light-emitting-diode lamps and liquid-crystal-display circuits. Their unique structure and capabilities can find a wide range of practical applications, such as health monitoring, medical diagnosis, early warning systems for structural failure, and wearable displays.

Abstract:Non-enzymatic glucose sensors outperform enzymatic ones in terms of cost, sensitivity, stability, and operating duration. Though highly sensitive, it is still desirable to further improve the sensitivity of non-enzymatic glucose sensors to detect a trace amount of glucose in sweat and other biofluids. Among the demonstrated effective approaches using bimetals or 3D porous structures, the porous laser-induced graphene (LIG) on flexible polymers showcases good conductivity and a simple fabrication process for the integration of sensing materials. The uniform electroless plating of the nickel and gold layer on LIG electrodes demonstrates significantly enhanced sensitivity and a large linear range for glucose sensing. The sensor with the porous LIG foam exhibits a high sensitivity of 1080 μA mM−1 cm−2, whereas a further increased sensitivity of 3500 μA mM−1 cm−2 is obtained with LIG fibers (LIGF). Impressively, a large linear range (0 – 30 mM) can be achieved by changing the bias voltage from 0.5 to 0.1 V due to the Au coating. Because the existing non-enzymatic glucose sensors are limited to use in basic solutions, their application in wearable electronics is elusive. In addition to the reduced requirement for the base solution, this work integrates a porous encapsulating reaction cavity containing alkali solutions with a soft, skin-interfaced microfluidic component to provide integrated microfluidic non-enzymatic glucose sensors for sweat sampling and glucose sensing. The accurate glucose measurements from the human sweat and cell culture media showcase the practical utility, which opens up opportunities for the non-enzymatic glucose sensors in wearable electronics.

Abstract:The increasing interest in wearable smart healthcare systems has sparked considerable attention toward flexible sensors owing to their high sensitivity and flexibility. However, these sensors still face challenges in terms of performance imbalances and instability. To address these issues, graphene-based conductive materials with exceptional mechanical and electrical properties have been incorporated into flexible sensors. Despite the potential of graphene, a comprehensive understanding of the sensing mechanisms and influence of fabrication methods on the performance of graphene-based flexible sensors is lacking. This article aims to bridge this gap by providing an overview of the latest research progress in flexible graphene sensors. We begin by analyzing the main properties of graphene materials, including tensile strength, specific surface area, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity. These properties highlight the superior characteristics of graphene for flexible sensor applications. The sensing mechanisms of strain/pressure, gas, and temperature flexible sensors are reviewed, with a focus on innovations in graphene composites, regular microstructures, and emerging preparation methods that enable an effective balance of the individual properties of a single flexible sensor. Furthermore, the article discusses graphene-based multifunctional flexible sensors that allow for the simultaneous monitoring of multiple stimuli, self-powered performance studies, and wireless communication performance studies. Performance analysis of these sensors in the context of flexible systems is provided. Finally, this article presents a comprehensive summary of flexible graphene sensors and offers an outlook for the future. We aim to provide theoretical guidance and technical support for the realization of individual whole-life physical sign detection using flexible graphene-based sensors.

Abstract:Continuous painless glucose monitoring is the greatest desire of more than 422 million diabetics worldwide. Therefore, new non-invasive and convenient approaches to glucose monitoring are more in demand than other tests for microanalytical diagnostic tools. Besides, blood glucose detection can be replaced by continuous glucose monitoring of other human biological fluids (e.g. sweat) collected non-invasively. In this study, a skin-attachable and stretchable electrochemical enzymatic sensor based on ZnO tetrapods (TPs) and a new class of 2D materials - transition metal carbides, known as MXene, was developed and their electroanalytical behavior was tailored for continuous detection glucose in sweat. The high specific area of ZnO TPs and superior electrical conductivity of MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanoflakes enabled to produce enzymatic electrochemical glucose biosensor with enhanced sensitivity in sweat sample (29 μA mM-1 cm-2), low limit of detection (LOD ≈ 17 μM), broad linear detection range (LDR = 0.05-0.7 mM) that satisfices glucose detection application in human sweat, and advanced mechanical stability (up to 30% stretching) of the template. The developed skin-attachable stretchable electrochemical electrodes allowed to monitor the level of glucose in sweat while sugar uptake and during physical activity. Continuous in vivo monitoring of glucose in sweat obtained during 60 min correlated well with data collected by a conventional amperometric blood glucometer in vitro mode. Our findings demonstrate the high potential of developed ZnO/MXene skin-attachable stretchable sensors for biomedical applications on a daily basis.

Abstract:Wearable electronics or epidermal electronics have attracted growing interest for their expansion into markets as health monitors and for biological applications. However, a key obstacle lies in the light source and the optical path change caused by the deformation and displacement in the measurement. In this work, we demonstrated a wearable and biocompatible blood oxygen monitor by using heterogeneously integrated vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and a Si photodetector (PD) on a Au-laser-induced-graphene hybrid electrode. The strategy for fabricating a flexible electrode provides advantages including large-scale fabrication, high cost performance, and simple operation. The full widths at half-maximum of the 680 and 808 nm VCSEL were 1.8 and 0.8 nm, respectively, which is useful to improve sensitivity. Then, the rigid optoelectronics including narrowband VCSELs and a thinned Si PD were heterogeneously integrated on the flexible electrodes. Owing to the great flexibility and excellent light source, the wearable device conformal to the skin's surface can be utilized to extract blood oxygen (SpO2). It was successfully demonstrated that the flexible device can extract the photoplethysmography signals of various regions including the fingernail, the wrist, and the earlobe. Abstract:Noncontact electronic skin (e-skin), which possesses superior long-range and high-spatial-resolution sensory properties, is becoming indispensable in fulfilling the emulation of human sensation via prosthetics. Here, we present an advanced design and fabrication of all-graphene-based highly flexible noncontact e-skins by virtue of femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW). The photoreduced graphene oxide patterns function as the conductive electrodes, whereas the pristine graphene oxide thin film serves as the sensing layer. The as-fabricated e-skins exhibit high sensitivity, fast response-recovery behavior, good long-term stability, and excellent mechanical robustness. In-depth analysis reveals that the sensing mechanism is attributed to proton and ionic conductivity in the low and high humidity conditions, respectively. By taking the merits of the FsLDW, a 4 × 4 sensing matrix is facilely integrated in a single-step, eco-friendly, and green process. The light-weight and in-plane matrix shows high-spatial-resolution sensing capabilities over a long detection range in a noncontact mode. This study will open up an avenue to innovations in the noncontact e-skins and hold a promise for applications in wearable human-machine interfaces, robotics, and bioelectronics.
