Abstract:Increasing evidence suggests endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) improve neovascularization and endothelium regeneration. Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural polyphenolic compound, which has been demonstrated to exert multiple protective effects on the cardiovascular system, including inhibition of platelet adhesion and aggregation, reduction of myocardial ischemia‑reperfusion injury, and suppression of neointimal hyperplasia of injured vascular tissue. The present study investigated the role of RSV on levels of oxidative stress and senescence of EPCs, and the effects of RSV on vascular‑promoting and/or vascular‑healing capacity of EPCs. It was demonstrated that EPCs could promote the repair of endothelium of the injured artery. RSV reduced the oxidative reaction of EPCs and inhibited EPC senescence, and these effects may occur via the peroxisome proliferator‑activated receptor‑γ/heme oxygenase‑1 signaling pathways.
Resveratrol prevents age‐related heart impairment through inhibiting the Notch/NF‐κB pathway

Abstract:Resveratrol alleviates the D‐gal‐induced cardiac aging process. Resveratrol alleviates mayocardial injury by blocking the Notch/NF‐κB pathway. Resveratrol could significantly improve short‐chain fatty acids in the feces of mice. Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural polyphenol compound found in various plants that has been shown to have potential benefits for preventing aging and supporting cardiovascular health. However, the specific signal pathway by which RSV protects the aging heart is not yet well understood. This study aimed to explore the protective effects of RSV against age‐related heart injury and investigate the underlying mechanisms using a D‐galactose‐induced aging model. The results of the study indicated that RSV provided protection against age‐related heart impairment in mice. This was evidenced by the reduction of cardiac histopathological changes as well as the attenuation of apoptosis. RSV‐induced cardioprotection was linked to a significant increase in antioxidant activity and mitochondrial transmembrane potential, as well as a reduction in oxidative damage. Additionally, RSV inhibited the production of pro‐inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin‐1β (IL‐1β) and tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α). Furthermore, the expression of toll‐like receptor 4 (TLR4), nuclear factor kappa‐B p65 (NF‐κB p65), and notch 1 protein were inhibited by RSV, indicating that inhibiting the Notch/NF‐κB pathway played a critical role in RSV‐triggered heart protection in aging mice. Moreover, further data on intestinal function demonstrated that RSV significantly increased short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in intestinal contents and reduced the pH value in the feces of aging mice. RSV alleviated aging‐induced cardiac dysfunction through the suppression of oxidative stress and inflammation via the Notch/NF‐κB pathway in heart tissue. Furthermore, this therapeutic effect was found to be associated with its protective roles in the intestine.

Resveratrol ameliorates thymus senescence changes in D-galactose induced mice

Abstract:The thymic microenvironment plays an important role in the development of T cells. A decrease of thymic epithelial cells is the main cause of age-related thymic atrophy or degeneration. Resveratrol (RSV), a phytoalexin produced from plants, has been shown to inhibit the adverse effects of dietary obesity on the structure and function of the thymus. D-Galactose (D-gal) can induce accelerated aging in mice. In the present study, young mice (2 months old) were injected with D-gal (120 mg/kg/day) for 8 consecutive weeks to construct an accelerated aging model. Compared with normal control mice, the thymus epithelium of the D-gal treated mice had structural changes, the number of senescent cells increased, the number of CD4+ T cells decreased, and CD8+ T cells increased. After RSV administration by gavage for 6 weeks, it was found that RSV improved the surface phenotypes of D-gal treated mice, and recovered thymus function by maintaining the ratio of CD4+ to CD8+ cells. It also indicated that RSV enhanced the cell proliferation and inhibited cell senescence. Increased autoimmune regulator (Aire) expression was present in the RSV treated mice. The lymphotoxin-beta receptor (LTβR) expression also increased. These findings suggested that RSV intake could restore the alterations caused by D-gal treatment in the thymus via stimulation of Aire expression.
Resveratrol and/or exercise training counteract aging-associated decline of physical endurance in aged mice; targeting mitochondrial biogenesis and function

Abstract:Mitochondrial dysfunction and decreased mitochondrial content are hallmarks of aging that leads to decreased physical endurance. Our aim was to explore the anti-aging effect of resveratrol (RSVT) supplementation, a polyphenol, and/or exercise training, started at an older age, on improving physical activity, therefore, help in frailty avoidance and promotion of healthy aging in elderly. Eighteen-month-old aged mice received RSVT (15 mg/kg/day) and/or exercise trained for 4 weeks showed significant longer time to exhaustion with decreased blood lactate and free fatty acids levels associated with improved oxidative stress evidenced by decreased gastrocnemius muscle lipid peroxidation and increased antioxidant enzymes activities, catalase and superoxide dismutase, when compared to aged mice control group. These changes were accompanied by over-expression of skeletal muscle peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) mRNA, the master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis, and increased muscle citrate synthase activity, a marker for mitochondrial function. These findings may provide evidence for improved physical endurance by RSVT supplementation or exercise training with better results of their combination, even at an older age, through increasing mitochondrial biogenesis and function. Increased muscle PGC-1α mRNA expression and citrate synthase enzyme activity in addition to improved aging-associated oxidative damage were among the mechanisms involved in this protection.

Abstract:Diminished mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and aerobic capacity are associated with reduced longevity. We tested whether resveratrol (RSV), which is known to extend lifespan, impacts mitochondrial function and metabolic homeostasis. Treatment of mice with RSV significantly increased their aerobic capacity, as evidenced by their increased running time and consumption of oxygen in muscle fibers. RSV's effects were associated with an induction of genes for oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial biogenesis and were largely explained by an RSV-mediated decrease in PGC-1alpha acetylation and an increase in PGC-1alpha activity. This mechanism is consistent with RSV being a known activator of the protein deacetylase, SIRT1, and by the lack of effect of RSV in SIRT1(-/-) MEFs. Importantly, RSV treatment protected mice against diet-induced-obesity and insulin resistance. These pharmacological effects of RSV combined with the association of three Sirt1 SNPs and energy homeostasis in Finnish subjects implicates SIRT1 as a key regulator of energy and metabolic homeostasis.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the protective effects of resveratrol on brain tissues in aging mice induced by D-galactose. METHODS 54 Kunming male mice aged 16 weeks were randomly divided into control group, aging group, intervention group. The control group was prepared by subcutaneous injection of normal saline and the other two groups were prepared by subcutaneous injection of D-galactose(200 mg/kg BW). The intervention group was fed with resveratrol (22.5 mg/kg BW)by oral gavage and the other two groups were fed with solution of 0.5% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. All animals were sacrificed 16 weeks later, morphology of brain was observed, calculate the organ coefficients, and GSH-Px, SOD, CAT, MAO activity and MDA content were detected in the mice brain. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the aging group lost normal morphological structure of nerve cells and the number of nerve cells was significantly decreased (P < 0.05), the organ coefficients were significantly decreased (P < 0.05), and GSH-Px, SOD, CAT activities were significantly decreased (P < 0.05), MAO activity and MDA content were significantly increased in brain of the aging group (P < 0.05). Compared with the aging group, the intervention group brain maintain normal morphological structure of nerve cells and the number of nerve cells was significantly increased (P < 0.05), the organ coefficients were significantly increased (P < 0.05), and GSH-Px, SOD, CAT activities were significantly increased (P < 0.05), MAO activity and MDA content were significantly decreased in brain of the intervention group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Resveratrol can maintain normal morphological structure of nerve cells of aging mice, decrease oxidative stress responses, and has protective effects on brain tissues in aging mice induced by D-galactose.

Abstract:Male Wistar rats were administered 10 mg/kg of resveratrol for 18 months, object recognition memory, oxidative stress markers, the endogenous antioxidant system and cellular capacity in three brain regions were analyzed. The results demonstrated the antioxidant and neuroprotective capacity of the resveratrol in the analyzed regions and improvement in memory function. The cognitive functions of people over 60 years of age have been diminished, due to the structural and functional changes that the brain has during aging. The most evident changes are at the behavioral and cognitive level, with decreased learning capacity, recognition memory, and motor incoordination. The use of exogenous antioxidants has been implemented as a potential pharmacological option to delay the onset of brain aging by attenuating oxidative stress and neurodegeneration. Resveratrol (RSVL) is a polyphenol present in various foods, such as red fruits, and drinks, such as red wine. This compound has shown great antioxidant capacity due to its chemical structure. In this study, we evaluated the effect of chronic RSVL treatment on oxidative stress and cell loss in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum of 20‐month‐old rats, as well as its impact on recognition memory and motor behavior. Rats treated with RSVL showed an improvement in locomotor activity and in short‐ and long‐term recognition memory. Likewise, the concentration of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation decreased significantly in the group with RSVL, coupled with an improvement in the activity of the antioxidant system. Finally, with the help of hematoxylin and eosin staining, it was shown that chronic treatment with RSVL prevented cell loss in the brain regions studied. Our results demonstrate the antioxidant and neuroprotective capacity of RSVL when administered chronically. This strengthens the proposal that RSVL could be an important pharmacological option to reduce the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases that affect older adults.

J Strength Cond Res 28(11): 3206–3214, 2014—The Norwegian Home Guard (HG) consists of soldiers and officers who primarily live a civilian life but are typically called in for military training a few days per year. Although full-time soldiers and officers are monitored annually on physical fitness, no such assessments are performed on regular HG personnel. Data on physical fitness of similar forces from other nations are also scarce. Thus, the main aim of this study was to collect reference data on physical fitness in HG personnel. A total of 799 male soldiers and officers from the regular and the rapid reaction HG force participated in this study. Between 13 and 19% of the subjects were obese, according to measured body mass index, waist circumference and estimations of body fat. The mean (95% confidence interval) estimated peak oxygen uptake from the 20-m shuttle run test was 50.1 (49.7–50.6) mL·kg−1·minute−1. Personnel from the rapid reaction force had a more favorable body composition compared with the regular HG personnel, whereas no differences were found for peak oxygen uptake. The physical demands on HG personnel are not well defined, but we believe that the majority of Norwegian HG soldiers and officers have a sufficient aerobic fitness level to fulfill their planned HG tasks. The gathered data can be used by military leaders to review the ability of the HG to perform expected military tasks, to serve as a future reference material for secular changes in HG fitness level, and for comparison purposes among similar international reserve forces.
SVHRSP Alleviates Age-Related Cognitive Deficiency by Reducing Oxidative Stress and Neuroinflammation

Abstract:Background: Our previous studies have shown that scorpion venom heat-resistant synthesized peptide (SVHRSP) induces a significant extension in lifespan and improvements in age-related physiological functions in worms. However, the mechanism underlying the potential anti-aging effects of SVHRSP in mammals remains elusive. Methods: Following SVHRSP treatment in senescence-accelerated mouse resistant 1 (SAMR1) or senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8) mice, behavioral tests were conducted and brain tissues were collected for morphological analysis, electrophysiology experiments, flow cytometry, and protein or gene expression. The human neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y) was subjected to H2O2 treatment in cell experiments, aiming to establish a cytotoxic model that mimics cellular senescence. This model was utilized to investigate the regulatory mechanisms underlying oxidative stress and neuroinflammation associated with age-related cognitive impairment mediated by SVHRSP. Results: SVHRSP significantly ameliorated age-related cognitive decline, enhanced long-term potentiation, restored synaptic loss, and upregulated the expression of synaptic proteins, therefore indicating an improvement in synaptic plasticity. Moreover, SVHRSP demonstrated a decline in senescent markers, including SA-β-gal enzyme activity, P16, P21, SIRT1, and cell cycle arrest. The underlying mechanisms involve an upregulation of antioxidant enzyme activity and a reduction in oxidative stress-induced damage. Furthermore, SVHRSP regulated the nucleoplasmic distribution of NRF2 through the SIRT1-P53 pathway. Further investigation indicated a reduction in the expression of proinflammatory factors in the brain after SVHRSP treatment. SVHRSP attenuated neuroinflammation by regulating the NF-κB nucleoplasmic distribution and inhibiting microglial and astrocytic activation through the SIRT1-NF-κB pathway. Additionally, SVHRSP significantly augmented Nissl body count while suppressing neuronal loss. Conclusion: SVHRSP could remarkably improve cognitive deficiency by inhibiting oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, thus representing an effective strategy to improve brain health.

Red yeast rice dietary intervention reduces oxidative stress-related inflammation and improves intestinal microbiota

Abstract:Inflammation and oxidative stress play key roles in the aging process, while red yeast rice (RYR), a traditional Chinese fermented food, has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. To understand the anti-aging function of RYR in vivo , this study established a D -galactose-induced aging mouse model to verify the positive effects of RYR dietary intervention on aging and explore the related underlying mechanism. Eight weeks of RYR dietary intervention was shown to have a significant inhibitory effect on cognitive decline and hippocampal damage. The molecular mechanistic studies showed that the anti-aging effects of RYR were achieved by (i) improving the oxidative stress-related damage (increasing SOD, CAT, and GSH, and reducing MDA), (ii) regulating the NF-κB inflammation pathway induced by oxidative stress (decreasing the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, iNOs, and IL-1β, increasing the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, and decreasing the expression of the NF-κB protein), (iii) slowing down apoptosis caused by oxidative stress (reducing the expression of P21 and P53), (iv) restoring the abundance of Lactobacillus , Lachnospiraceae and Rikenellaceae downregulated by D -galactose, and (v) reducing the abundance of Akkermansia and Helicobacter enriched by D -galactose. Mass spectrometry revealed orange pigments (rubropunctatin and monascorubrin) as the main antioxidant components in RYR, which might play key roles in aging inhibition. This study provides theoretical support for the wide application of orange pigments as an antioxidant dietary supplement.

Abstract:During aging, in addition to increased oxidative stress, inflammation also occurs. A chronic and low-grade inflammation - called "inflammaging" - develops, which contributes to the etiology of diseases related to aging. Resveratrol (Resv.) is a polyphenol well known for its biologically active properties, such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This balance can be regulated by Nrf2 - a transcription factor that regulates cellular defense against oxidative agents through the expression or inhibition of certain genes. The objective was to evaluate the effect of Nrf2 on the production of cytokines in leukocytes of different ages treated with resveratrol (5μm). The subjects were divided into three groups: 20-39, 40-59 and 60-80 years old. After separation of the leukocytes, a 24-hour treatment was carried out with and without ML385 inhibitor with the treatments: Control, Resv, Peroxide and Peroxide+Resv. 150 μM peroxide was set to develop an oxidative environment. Cytokines were measured by ELISA (*p<0.05). In general, there was an increase in TNF and IL-6 in cells stimulated with peroxide compared to controls. A decrease in these two cytokines was also observed in cells treated with resveratrol, both at basal levels and in an oxidizing environment (with peroxide). The polyphenol was able to increase IL-10 only in the youngest age groups. The same profile was observed comparing the same groups when the Nrf2 pathway was inhibited with ML385. It is concluded that resveratrol may have a better effect on preventing oxidation and inflammation present in aging, especially through the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory Nrf2 pathway.

Materials and methods: Human umbilical endothelial vein cells (HUVECs) were divided into four groups: the control group, and the hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) alone, H 2 O 2 + RESV pretreatment, and H 2 O 2 + 3-methyladenine (3-MA) + RESV pretreatment intervention groups. The cell viability was evaluated by a cell counting kit-8 assay. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were tested using commercial kits. Senescence-related β-galactosidase activities were detected by immunohistochemical staining. The expression levels of aging-related and autophagy-related markers, including phosphorylated Rb (p-Rb), LC3, and p62, with or without RESV were measured by Western blotting. Results: Pretreatment with 10 μM RESV increased the cell viability and SOD levels. The remarkably higher positive rate of senescence-associated β-galactosidase and increased intracellular ROS levels in the H 2 O 2 treatment group were reversed by treatment with 10 μM RESV. As compared to the H 2 O 2 treatment group, 10 μM RESV could upregulate autophagy through the regulation of p-Rb, LC3, and p62 levels. The anti-aging effect of RESV via an autophagy regulation mechanism was further confirmed by the suppression of these effects with 3-MA treatment. Conclusion: RESV may reverse and delay the aging process of HUVECs via upregulation of autophagy and could be a candidate therapeutic for age-related atherosclerotic diseases. Abstract:Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) that prevents and alleviates the degenerative changes associated with aging has been receiving extensive attention. In our present work, the ageing model was induced by injection of 500 mg kg-1D-galactose daily for a period of eight weeks. The D-galactose-induced ageing mice model was used for evaluating the effect of GSPE on oxidative stress, inflammation levels and gut microbiota composition. D-Galactose induced oxidative damage and inflammation with a significant increase in malondialdehyde contents, myeloperoxidase activities and the levels of TNF-α and IL-1β, as well as a reduction in the activities of glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione. Treatment with different doses of GSPE could significantly improve the antioxidant capacity and inflammation levels in the liver and brain, which is accompanied by increased Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Akkermansia, as well as decreased Helicobacter and Alistipes. In addition, the high-dose GSPE group exhibited greater potential to delay the ageing process than the low-dose group. Our results also showed that GSPE administration could downregulate the NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathway for inhibiting inflammation levels in the brain tissue. This study provided a novel strategy to target the gut microbiota with regard to the effect of GSPE administration on alleviating aging-induced alterations via the gut microbiota-liver axis and gut microbiota-brain axis.

Abstract:Resveratrol (RSV), a natural polyphenol, has been shown to exert activity against obesity and related chronic inflammation. However, due to the poor bioavailability of RSV, the mechanisms of RSV against inflammation in obesity models remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the gut bacteria and the anti-inflammation effects of RSV in HFD-fed mice. We found that RSV supplementation reduced fat accumulation and improved systemic inflammation in HFD-fed mice. Meanwhile, RSV attenuated HFD-induced changes in the gut microbiota's structure, which were associated with inflammatory parameters. A fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiment proved that the anti-inflammation effects of RSV largely rely on the gut microbiota. Moreover, the microbiota-genera-changing trend in the FMT experiment was similar to that in the oral RSV-feeding experiment. Thus, these results demonstrate that modulation of the gut bacteria induced by RSV treatment has a therapeutic effect on chronic low-grade inflammation in HFD-fed mice.

Abstract:The substantial increase in the number of elderly people in our societies represents a challenge for biology and medicine. The societies of the industrialized countries are subject to a progressive aging process that translates into an increase in the cardiovascular risk of the population. In the present work, the activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase was evaluated, as well as markers of oxidative stress (concentration of nitric oxide and total lipoperoxidation in its main components: malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxyalkene) in cardiomyocytes during the aging process in rats treated with resveratrol. Rats were divided into 4 groups according to the following categories: control (without treatment), negative control group (administered with physiological solution with 10% ethanol), positive control group (administered with vitamin E, 2 mg/kg/day), and group administered with resveratrol (10 mg/kg/day); these groups in turn were divided into 2, 4, 6, and 8 months of treatment. The analysis of nitric oxide showed a decreased level in the cardiac tissue in the groups treated with resveratrol; the same occurs when total lipoperoxidation is analyzed. The enzymatic activity studied (catalase and superoxide dismutase) did not present significant changes with respect to the controls. It is concluded that the cardioprotective effect of resveratrol is due to the antioxidant effect and other antiaging effects and not to the activation of the enzymes catalase and superoxide dismutase.

Abstract:Mediterranean diet (MD) is the most relevant nutritional aspect of the multisecular Mediterranean civilisation which includes wine as an element of health and wellbeing when consumed with moderation. Mediterranean meals provide food micronutrients which include polyphenols, especially resveratrol from grape and red wine. MD, also called Cretan diet, has been proven to prevent diseases including cardiovascular pathologies, cancer, and to prevent aging. Interestingly, the grape and more precisely in grape skin contains the highest concentration of RSV. In consequence, red wine is the most concentrated food source of RSV found in the human diet. This review topic deals to how efficient is RSV towards alterations during the aging process; obtained from recent data of clinical trials, preclinical studies, and cell culture approach; especially RSV protecting effect on brain aging of elderly; its role on the microglial cells playing a central role in the neuro-inflammation; and in its anti-inflammatory effects on ocular diseases.

Abstract:Over the past years, several studies have found that foods rich in polyphenols protect against age-related disease, such as atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, cancer, arthritis, cataracts, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes (T2D), hypertension and Alzheimer's disease. Resveratrol and pterostilbene, the polyphenol found in grape and blueberries, have beneficial effects as anti-aging compounds through modulating the hallmarks of aging, including oxidative damage, inflammation, telomere attrition and cell senescence. In this review, we discuss the relationship between resveratrol and pterostilbene and possible aging biomarker, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and high-calorie diets. Moreover, we also discuss the positive effect of resveratrol and pterostilbene on lifespan, aged-related disease, and health maintenance. Furthermore, we summarize a variety of important mechanisms modulated by resveratrol and pterostilbene possibly involved in attenuating age-associated disorders. Overall, we describe resveratrol and pterostilbene potential for prevention or treatment of several age-related diseases by modulating age-related mechanisms. © 2017 BioFactors, 44(1):69-82, 2018.

Resveratrol Improves Growth Performance, Intestinal Morphology, and Microbiota Composition and Metabolism in Mice

Abstract:Background Resveratrol (RSV) plays a vital role in alleviating various stresses and improving intestinal health. The current study was conducted to explore whether RSV alleviates weaning stress through improving gut health in a weaning mouse model. Forty 21-day-old weaned mice were randomly assigned to a control group without RSV treatment and three treatment groups with 10, 20, and 50 mg/kg RSV for 28 days. Results The results showed that RSV at a dose of 20 mg/kg improved total body weight, intestinal morphology (villus length and the ratio of villus length to crypt depth), and the levels of intestinal barrier proteins (claudin-1 and occludin), but had little effect on the food intake, crypt depth, and serum free amino acids of mice. Compared with the control group, mice supplemented with RSV had decreased mRNA expression of genes related to inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and IL-1β), but increased mRNA expression of genes related to host defense peptides (Defa3, Defa5, Defa20, and Lyz) and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production (propionic acid, isobutyric acid, butyric acid, and isovaleric acid). In addition, 16S rRNA sequencing results showed that RSV supplementation increased the richness indices of intestinal microbiota (Chao, ACE) and shaped the composition of intestinal microbiota (e.g., increased β-diversity of intestinal microbiota community). Meanwhile, RSV supplementation increased genes of Butyricicoccus , Ruminococcus_1 , and Roseburia , which are producers of SCFAs. Furthermore, RSV supplementation significantly influenced the metabolism of intestinal microbiota, namely, amino acids metabolism, lipid metabolism, and defense mechanisms. Conclusion RSV can improve growth performance and intestinal morphology in weaning mice, possibly through improving gut immune response and microbiota function.

Abstract:Aging is intrinsically related to metabolic changes and characterized by the accumulation of oxidative and inflammatory damage, as well as alterations in gene expression and activity of several signaling pathways, which in turn impact on homeostatic responses of the body. Hypothalamus is a brain region most related to these responses, and increasing evidence has highlighted a critical role of astrocytes in hypothalamic homeostatic functions, particularly during aging process. The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vitro effects of a chronic treatment with resveratrol (1 µM during 15 days, which was replaced once every 3 days), a recognized anti-inflammatory and antioxidant molecule, in primary hypothalamic astrocyte cultures obtained from aged rats (24 months old). We observed that aging process changes metabolic, oxidative, inflammatory, and senescence parameters, as well as glial markers, while long-term resveratrol treatment prevented these effects. In addition, resveratrol upregulated key signaling pathways associated with cellular homeostasis, including adenosine receptors, nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α), and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K). Our data corroborate the glioprotective effect of resveratrol in aged hypothalamic astrocytes, reinforcing the beneficial role of resveratrol in the aging process.
