Abstract:The Valley of Santo Domingo represents the most important agricultural region in the state of Baja California Sur. The uncontrolled extraction of groundwater, and especially the over-exploitation of the Santo Domingo aquifer from 1957 on, has caused modifications to the natural flow system and induced a lateral inflow of seawater from the Pacific coast. As a result, the groundwater quality in the Santo Domingo Irrigation District (066) is deteriorating. Seawater intrusion and irrigation return water, combined with the mobilization of deeper groundwater, have been identified as important sources of salinization. Due to a reduction of the permitted extraction volume (to only one-third), an equality between discharge and recharge volume was achieved from 2003 on, but the deterioration of the groundwater quality still continues. To plan different scenarios of artificial recharge, a regional groundwater model was created, using the Modflow2000 software. The observed groundwater levels (from 1996 on) were used to calibrate the groundwater flow model, taking into account the extraction rates of more than active 500 wells. To simulate infiltration of surface water, runoff data were introduced to the Streamflow package, based on calculations from an HEC-1 model. In the Valley of Santo Domingo, the natural recharge and infiltration of irrigation return water generate an average annual recharge of 188 million m3. As a first step toward an aquifer management plan, results from hydrological and hydraulic models were incorporated into the regional groundwater flow model, to plan scenarios of additional artificial recharge facilities that would prevent deepening of the cone of depression. The elaborated Water Resources Management plan proposes the capture of an annual volume of 30 million m3 of surface water from the Sierra de la Giganta Mountains, which could be accumulated in four water retention dams. The captured surface water then would flow to the four smaller recharge dams with a total storage volume of about 2 million m3, located downstream, where it would recharge the aquifer. As the model indicates, within a period of 3 months, an annual volume of at least 21.5 million m3 of surface water could be infiltrated via the riverbeds and recharge dams. Although this volume may not be enough to prevent saline intrusion from the coast line, it would stop the water level decline in the center of the cone of depression and improve groundwater quality.

Abstract:Modelling the effects of artificial groundwater recharge in a multilayer aquifer characterized by perched water tables. The modelling focuses on analysing the impact of MAR on: (1) Percolation into the deep aquifer; (2) On the shallow perched aquifers; (3) The former wetlands connected to the perched aquifers; and (4) On the banks near the flooded surface. The methodological novelty consists of representing deep percolation with a Dirichlet predetermined level boundary condition. This paper presents an approach to estimate the effects of a managed recharge experiment in a multilayer aquifer characterized by the presence of perched water tables in the Medina del Campo groundwater body, Douro basin, central Spain. A numerical model was developed to evaluate the effect of artificial recharge on the shallow sector of a regional‐scale aquifer and on formerly active wetlands. The model was developed in the Visual MODFLOW Pro v.2011.1 environment in order to represent and analyse the regional impact of this artificial recharge event. Results suggest that the assumption of a single perched system may prove useful in regional contexts where data is limited. From a study site perspective, managed recharge is observed to increase shallow storage along the riverbanks, which is considered valuable for environmental purposes. However, downstream wetlands are unlikely to experience a significant recovery. Furthermore, only a small percentage of artificial recharge is expected to reach the deep regional aquifer. This method can be exported to settings characterized by the presence of perched aquifers and associated groundwater dependent ecosystems.

Estimating the impact of vadose zone heterogeneity on agricultural managed aquifer recharge: A combined experimental and modeling study

Abstract:Agricultural managed aquifer recharge (Ag-MAR) is a promising approach to replenish groundwater resources using flood water and cropland as spreading grounds. However, site selection, particularly the layering of sediment deposits in the subsurface, can greatly influence Ag-MAR efficacy as it controls water flow and solute transport in the vadose zone. In this study, we use the HYDRUS-1D software to simulate water flow and solute transport from the land surface to the groundwater table in three vadose zone profiles (LS, MS, HS) characterized by differing fractions of sand (44 %, 47 %, and 64 %). For each profile, the single- and dual-porosity models (i.e., considering or not nonequilibrium water flow and solute transport) were calibrated using observed surface ponding, soil water content, and KBr breakthrough data. Water flow and bromide transport in the profile with the lowest sand fraction (LS) were best captured using the model that considered both preferential flow and nonequilibrium bromide transport. Water flow and bromide transport in the profile with the highest sand fraction (HS) was best simulated with the model that considered preferential flow and equilibrium bromide transport. Uniform water flow and nonequilibrium bromide transport provided the best fit for the third profile (MS). The degree of preferential flow was highest in the profile with the largest sand fraction (HS), which also showed the largest flow velocities compared to the profiles with lower sand amounts (LS and MS). Preferential flow did not significantly impact the overall water balance (within 3 %), but caused a significant decrease in vadose zone travel times (bromide) by up to 38 %, relative to a single-porosity model fit. Recharge efficiency varied between 88 % and 90 %, while the average travel times from the soil surface to groundwater varied up to 119 % (from 3.6 to 7.9 days) between the three sites. This study demonstrates that similar recharge efficiency can be achieved at sites with differing soil texture profiles, but subsurface heterogeneity can substantially affect contaminant transport processes and their travel times.

Abstract:Aquifer recharge is one of the most important hydrologic parameters for understanding available groundwater volumes and making sustainable the use of natural water by minimizing groundwater mining. In this framework, we reviewed and evaluated the efficacy of multiple methods to determine recharge in a flood basalt terrain that is restrictive to infiltration and percolation. In the South Fork of the Columbia River Plateau, recent research involving hydrologic tracers and groundwater modeling has revealed a snowmelt-dominated system. Here, recharge is occurring along the intersection of mountain-front alluvial systems and the extensive Miocene flood basalt layers that form a fractured basalt and interbedded sediment aquifer system. The most recent groundwater flow model of the basin was based on a large physio-chemical dataset acquired in laterally and vertically distinctive locations that refined the understanding of the intersection of the margin alluvium and the spatially variable basalt flows that filled the basin. Modelled effective recharge of 25 and 105 mm/year appears appropriate for the basin's plain and the mountain front, respectively. These values refine previous efforts on quantifying aquifer recharge based on Darcy's law, one-dimensional infiltration, zero-flux plane, chloride, storage, and mass-balance methods. Overall, the combination of isotopic hydrochemical data acquired in three dimensions and flow modelling efforts were needed to simultaneously determine groundwater dynamics, recharge pathways, and appropriate model parameter values in a primarily basalt terrain. This holistic approach to understanding recharge has assisted in conceptualizing the aquifer for resource managers that have struggled to understand aquifer dynamics and sustainable withdrawals.

Abstract:Recharge is a critical component for understanding aquifer systems and the sustainable management of groundwater resources, yet this process is challenging to measure at policy-relevant spatiotemporal scales. Building upon previous research, we tested the hypothesis that InSAR can be used to observe river-sourced recharge if the underlying recharge pathways are associated with sufficient clay content. Our analysis leveraged the decomposition of InSAR time series with interpretations of 3D resistivity models derived from airborne electromagnetic (AEM) surveys. We focused our analysis on two study sites where high density AEM data were available and river-sourced recharge is determined to have occurred during wet years: 1) near Fresno, California and 2) near Visalia, California. Sediment type and hydrogeological structure from AEM supported our hypothesis with the InSAR signature attributed to river-sourced recharge occurring only in the study site with semi-confined to confined conditions and relatively high fraction of interbedded clay within recharge pathways. The timing to peak amplitude, the key feature we wanted to isolate in the InSAR data, near Visalia was interpreted as a pressure pulse front associated with river-sourced recharge propagating into the San Joaquin Valley. This study further validated the potential of InSAR, coupled with AEM data, to map and monitor river-sourced recharge in aquifer systems. As InSAR data become more accessible, this approach holds promise for broader applications in groundwater science and management worldwide.

Sustainability of Regional Groundwater Quality in Response to Managed Aquifer Recharge

Abstract:Growing demands on water supply worldwide have resulted in aquifer overdraft in many regions, especially in alluvial basins under intensive irrigation. This further leads to serious deterioration of groundwater quality. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) has been shown to mitigate groundwater overdraft, but whether MAR can actually stabilize or reverse the ongoing declines in regional groundwater quality caused by non‐point sources has not been demonstrated. This study was intended to address the question by investigating impacts of different MAR strategies on regional groundwater quality. A geostatistical model was first used to characterize a heterogeneous alluvial aquifer system in a portion of the Tulare Lake Basin (TLB). Three‐dimensional numerical models were then employed to simulate groundwater flow and mass transport. Next, MAR strategies were applied in locations with different geological conditions or joint with different irrigation activities, and their performances were evaluated. Results demonstrate the potential of significant, long‐term benefits for regional groundwater quality by applying strategic, high‐intensity recharge operations on geologically favorable subregions. Siting MAR above the incised valley fill (IVF) deposit, a near‐surface paleochannel containing unusually coarse, high‐conductivity hydrofacies, leads to more extensive improvement in the groundwater quality in terms of salinity due to significant vertical flow and lateral outward flow from the IVF. Overall, decades would be required to alleviate groundwater quality concerns in the studied 189 km2 region. The simulations indicate that the deep concentrations remain below the secondary maximum contaminant level (SMCL) as the solute mass migrates downward with the prominent contribution from the attenuation via dispersion and matrix diffusion. Abstract:The Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer (MRVAA) is the main irrigation source for the Lower Mississippi River Basin. Irrigation water abstraction to meet the demands for extensive agricultural practices has contributed to groundwater depletion in this area. A managed aquifer recharge (MAR) approach has been proposed in this geographic location to minimize the impact of pumping on groundwater depletion. However, it is essential to determine the optimal amount of water to be injected through a MAR technique to reduce the decline in groundwater heads. This paper utilizes a coupled simulation–optimization (S-O) approach to estimate the optimal recharge volume into the alluvial aquifer through infiltration galleries. The aquifer processes were simulated using a physically based, three-dimensional finite-difference numerical code, MODFLOW. The MODFLOW model was calibrated and validated using the recharge rates and available groundwater head data for 26 months (27 February 2020 to 27 May 2022). The calibrated and validated models were then deployed within the coupled S-O approach to develop an aquifer recharge management model to estimate optimal groundwater recharge rates to minimize groundwater decline. Computational efficiency of the aquifer recharge management model was achieved using surrogate models that accurately reproduced the groundwater heads calculated by MODFLOW. Our evaluation demonstrates that a planned transient groundwater recharge strategy, obtained as a solution of the surrogate model based coupled S-O approach, is a useful management strategy for optimized water recharge and groundwater depletion control. This study shows the promise of the surrogate model based coupled S-O approach to potentially reduce groundwater depletion in the MRVAA by utilizing optimized recharge rates at the infiltration galleries. This work has potential applications to other aquifers and geographic locations to mitigate groundwater depletion issues due to extensive agricultural practices.

Natural recharge estimation and uncertainty analysis of an adjudicated groundwater basin using a regional-scale flow and subsidence model (Antelope Valley, California, USA)

Abstract:Groundwater has provided 50–90 % of the total water supply in Antelope Valley, California (USA). The associated groundwater-level declines have led the Los Angeles County Superior Court of California to recently rule that the Antelope Valley groundwater basin is in overdraft, i.e., annual pumpage exceeds annual recharge. Natural recharge consists primarily of mountain-front recharge and is an important component of the total groundwater budget in Antelope Valley. Therefore, natural recharge plays a major role in the Court’s decision. The exact quantity and distribution of natural recharge is uncertain, with total estimates from previous studies ranging from 37 to 200 gigaliters per year (GL/year). In order to better understand the uncertainty associated with natural recharge and to provide a tool for groundwater management, a numerical model of groundwater flow and land subsidence was developed. The transient model was calibrated using PEST with water-level and subsidence data; prior information was incorporated through the use of Tikhonov regularization. The calibrated estimate of natural recharge was 36 GL/year, which is appreciably less than the value used by the court (74 GL/year). The effect of parameter uncertainty on the estimation of natural recharge was addressed using the Null-Space Monte Carlo method. A Pareto trade-off method was also used to portray the reasonableness of larger natural recharge rates. The reasonableness of the 74 GL/year value and the effect of uncertain pumpage rates were also evaluated. The uncertainty analyses indicate that the total natural recharge likely ranges between 34.5 and 54.3 GL/year.

Abstract:There is growing interest in incorporating higher-resolution groundwater modeling within the framework of large-scale land surface models (LSMs), including processes such as three-dimensional flow, variable soil saturation, and surface water/groundwater interactions. Conversely, complex groundwater models (e.g., the U.S. Geological Survey Groundwater-Flow Model, MODFLOW) often use simpler representations of land surface dynamics (e.g., surface vegetation, evapotranspiration, recharge) and may benefit from higher process fidelity and temporal resolutions in these inputs. This study investigates the potential of improving groundwater representation in LSMs and land surface dynamics in MODFLOW through forcing MODFLOW with recharge from LSMs. Groundwater simulations build on an existing and well-calibrated MODFLOW model of the U.S. Northern High Plains aquifer, a hydrologically complex basin under the dual impacts of conversion of native vegetation to intense irrigated agricultural fields and climate change. Simulated groundwater recharge from four different land models are used to drive MODFLOW groundwater simulations. Results show relatively large discrepancies between recharge estimates among simulations. Forcing MODFLOW using recharge simulated by some of the LSMs in place of a simple water balance model marginally improves MODFLOW groundwater simulation. Further, our results support the efficacy of coupling LSMs to a sophisticated groundwater model such as MODFLOW. The coupling results in notable improvements in matching the historical groundwater levels through reduction of the skewness coefficient in percentage bias histogram (from 1.50 and 1.41 in original LSMs to 0.44 and 0.27, respectively, when MODFLOW is forced by groundwater recharge from LSMs) and reduction of bias. This modeling effort seeks to identify the best compromise between comprehensive land surface processes from global LSMs and advanced representation of groundwater from regional models.

Abstract:Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a water management strategy that uses aquifers for the seasonal or inter-annual storage of exceeding surface water. Systems that implement artificial recharge use infiltration ponds or shallow or deep infiltration wells. While articifial recharge through infiltration ponds requires large areas and infiltration through deep wells demands high investment, infiltration through drywells, which inject water to the vadose zone, is often a preferred option because of its low cost and relatively easy implementation. We present results of detailed numerical simulations to assess the operation of a single drywell to implement an artificial recharge system. We demonstrate that depending upon the distribution and property of the geological materials that compose the subsurface, the operation of the well can produce quite different results in terms of effective recharge. We expect that these findings will help design real MAR systems and provide supporting information for decision-makers in charge of approving and financing such water management systems.

Abstract:Vol. 7, No. 3 Supplement, June 2001 Emerging Infectious Diseases 537 Emerging Zoonotic Bacterial and Parasitic Diseases Corrie Brown from the University of Georgia discussed 15 diseases common to humans and animals, with a brief synopsis of how each disease is transmitted from animals to humans, the major animal reservoirs, and factors influencing the emergence of these diseases as human pathogens. The most important factors for emerging zoonotic diseases are (1) the transportation of humans and animals to new areas, (2) increased contact between animals and humans, (3) changes in the environment and husbandry practices, (4) a larger immunocompromised population, (5) increased recognition of diseases as zoonotic in origin, and (6) the discovery of new organisms not previously recognized. Domestic pets can transmit Bartonella henselae, Sporothrix schenkii, Capnocytophaga carnimorsus, Echinococcus multilocularis (alveolar hydatid disease), leishmaniasis, Yersinia pestis (plague), and ehrlichiosis. Emerging zoonotic disease agents transmitted by food animals include enteropathogenic E. coli, Salmonella DT104 (which may have human origins), Campylobacter spp, and Streptococcus iniae (from farmed fish). The most common rat-transmitted disease in the United States is leptospirosis, which has a variety of serovars. Many of these diseases are difficult to diagnose and all of them can be fatal.
Assessment of Groundwater Recharge in Agro-Urban Watersheds Using Integrated SWAT-MODFLOW Model

Abstract:Numerical models are employed widely to evaluate the hydrological components of a watershed but, traditionally, watershed models simplify either surface or subsurface flow module. In this setup, as a bridge between groundwater and surface water regimes, aquifer recharge is the most affected segment of the water balance. Since the watershed processes are increasingly changed, the need for a comprehensive model with detailed conceptualizing capacity of both groundwater and surface water flow systems is growing. This work focuses on the spatiotemporal groundwater recharge assessment in gauged and ungauged agro-urban watersheds in South Korea using the updated SWAT-MODFLOW model, which integrates the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT2012) and Newton–Raphson formulation for Modular Finite Difference Groundwater Flow (MODFLOW-NWT) in a single executable code. Before coupling, the setup, calibration, and verification of each model were performed separately. After integration, irrigation pumps and drain cells mapping to SWAT auto-irrigation and subbasins were initiated. Automatic calibration techniques were used for SWAT and MODFLOW-NWT models, but a manual calibration was used for the integrated model. A physical similarity approach was applied to transfer parameters to the ungauged watershed. Statistical model performance indicators revealed that the low streamflow estimation was improved in SWAT-MODFLOW. The spatiotemporal aquifer recharge distribution from both the stream seepage and precipitation showed a substantial change, and most of the aquifer recharge occurs in July–September. The areal annual average recharge reaches about 18% of the precipitation. Low-lying areas receive higher recharge consistently throughout a year. Overall, SWAT-MODFLOW exhibited reasonable versatility in evaluating watershed processes and produced valuable results with reasonable accuracy. The results can be an important input for policymakers in the development of sustainable groundwater protection and abstraction strategies for the region.

Abstract:In this study, a new framework was developed for the estimation of groundwater recharge based on a hybrid method. In this regard, the homogeneous recharge zones were determined by the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The recharge rates in these zones were calculated using the Thornthwaite and Mather’s method. These zones and their recharge rates were entered into the MODFLOW model. Next, the modeling processes, modification of recharge, and calibration of empirical models were interactively continued in the MODFLOW. This way, one of the most important disadvantages of conventional empirical models, i.e., ignoring the physical properties of the aquifer, was resolved by considering the main parameters such as soil properties, unsaturated thickness, land cover, irrigation, and precipitation in the resulting nonlinear equations. The low root mean square error values (less than 5.2) for all equations and high values of the coefficient of determinations indicated the accuracy and reliability of the models. The results of this hybrid method were a series of independent, cost-effective, rapid, and simple to use empirical equations for recharge estimation. As an example for the application of this method, the effects of climate change on groundwater recharge were evaluated in the study area. The obtained results showed that climate change would reduce the recharge rates of the homogeneous zones differently. Moreover, the recharge rate had a general decreasing trend in all regions. Overall, the total annual recharge rate would decrease in the plain. This reduction, especially in the west of the plain which is one of the most important sources of recharge supply, is considerable and will turn the entire plain vulnerable. In general, little reduction in rainfall or increase in temperature would have significant effects on groundwater recharge in the region. Therefore, due to the high dependence of this plain on groundwater resources, special planning is required for the exploitation of groundwater resources in the region.

Abstract:Aquifers are increasingly stressed. Managed aquifer recharge provides a potential solution to mitigate this stress and provide sustainable groundwater resources. Subsurface properties are known to have a strong control on the infiltration rates that can be achieved. However, these properties are often highly heterogeneous and difficult to assess with conventional probing techniques. Here, we show the application of 3D geophysical imaging to assess the recharge potential and its variation across several basins used for managed aquifer recharge. We link in-situ measurements of saturated hydraulic conductivity with the electrical resistivity of the subsurface to establish petrophysical relationships and use those relationships to estimate the distribution of hydraulic conductivity throughout the five recharge basins. Our results show a considerable variability in the hydraulic properties, i.e., soil texture and saturated hydraulic conductivity, that have a direct impact on potential infiltration rates. We use the 3D hydraulic property distributions to model groundwater recharge and provide estimates for infiltration rates and volumes, and use this approach to assess the impact of management activities on groundwater recharge performance. Having such data not only enables us to predict infiltration rates, but also provides means for optimizing such water infrastructure.

Consideration of the use of direct recharge in analytical models of flood-wave response: a case study of the Merguellil alluvial aquifer, central Tunisia

Abstract:In a stream–aquifer system, adequate knowledge of the aquifer hydraulic parameters is paramount for the analysis of groundwater/surface-water interaction. In such systems, analytical flood-wave response models are commonly used to assess these parameters. However, when an important means of direct recharge (precipitation) occurs simultaneously with the stream flood waves, the classical flood-wave response model (i.e. when only stream flood waves are considered as an input signal) leads to overestimated and variable values of the aquifer hydraulic parameters. In this study, an analytical flood-wave response model was implemented to determine hydraulic parameters of the Merguellil alluvial aquifer (central Tunisia) taking into account the recharge rate as a second input signal. An array of three piezometers and a river-stage gauge equipped with an automated Diver data logger were installed in the floodplain of the Merguellil Wadi. The results showed a good agreement between the observed and modelled hydrographs when the recharge rate was considered, which allows the model to provide the same value of diffusivity (50–70 m2 h−1) in the three piezometers and for all flood events being tested. However, when the recharge rate was not taken into account, the model gave an overestimated diffusivity with a very poor hydrograph match. Overall, the methodology described in this paper can be applicable to any area in the world because of its simplicity and its better estimation of aquifer hydraulic parameters.

Abstract:Artificial recharge of groundwater is an increasingly important method for augmenting groundwater supply and can have a positive or negative influence on the quality of water resources. We instrumented a managed aquifer recharge (MAR) pond in central coastal California to assess how patterns of infiltration and recharge affect the load of nitrate delivered to the underlying aquifer. The concentration of nitrate in infiltrating water consistently decreased during passage through the first metre of subsurface soils. Enrichment of 18O and 15 N in the residual nitrate in infiltrating water proceeded in a ratio of 1:2, indicating that denitrification plays a significant role in the quantitative reduction of nutrients exported during infiltration through shallow soils. The extent and rate of nitrate removal was spatially and temporally variable across the bottom of the recharge pond, with 30% to 60% of the nitrate load being removed over the first 6 weeks of managed aquifer recharge operation. During the period of highest N loading to the system, when the average infiltration rate was > 1 m/day, the recharge pond achieved a load reduction efficiency of 7 kg NO3−‐N/day/ha, which compares favourably to nitrate load reductions achieved by treatment wetlands. Groundwater mounding and water composition below the recharge pond suggest that recharge and subsequent lateral transport occur heterogeneously in the underlying aquifer. Nitrate concentrations in the aquifer following infiltration were lowered primarily by dilution, with little evidence for additional denitrification occurring in the aquifer in comparison to high rates documented during shallow infiltration. Abstract:A riparian zone is an important element in a river-aquifer system, controlling water exchange and other chemical and biological processes between a river and an aquifer. Complex groundwater flow patterns may occur due to aquifer heterogeneity within a riparian zone. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impacts of layered heterogeneity on water exchange in the riparian zone using a mathematical model for groundwater flow in a two-layer aquifer that is recharged by precipitation and floods. A semi-analytical solution is derived for the hydraulic head, lateral discharge, and fluxes between the layers. Results demonstrate that the hydraulic conductivity difference between the two layers enhances lateral flow in the higher permeable layer and, more importantly, generates vertical flow between the two layers. The vertical flow induced by the recharge event is downward while it could be upward or downward induced by the flood event, which is determined by the contrast in permeabilities of the two layers. Using an equivalent hydraulic conductivity approach underestimates discharge of the two-layer aquifer due to recharge or flood. The analytical solution closely matched the observed hydraulic heads in riparian zone well of White Clay Creek and provided reasonable estimates of aquifer parameters. The present solution provides a valuable basis for further study of chemical and biological processes in riparian zone.

Abstract:Groundwater resources can be artificially augmented by managed aquifer recharge especially in arid and semi-arid areas. Unlike most of the existing results which focus only on impervious aquifer base and assume perfect hydraulic connection between aquifer and adjacent stream, the present study addresses the recharge process in a more realistic case of leaky aquifer interacting with semipervious streambank. The mathematical model relies on 2D linearized Boussinesq equation with Robin boundary condition accounting for hydraulic resistance owing to semiperviousness of the streambed. The method of Green's function offers an integral representation of hydraulic head in semi-infinite aquifer domain in response to time-varying recharge from a rectangular basin. Hydrological components of groundwater recharge are derived taking into account volumetric rates of leakage, mound storage, and outflow to adjacent stream. Hypothetical test cases illustrate how sum of these components exactly counterbalances the volumetric rate of recharge received by the aquifer at each instant of time, and this is in full conformity with the expected mass balance at aquifer scale. The most influential parameters affecting the model outputs are identified through sensitivity analysis. Furthermore, interaction of pumping wells with groundwater mound is examined. Performance of the present results is assessed against numerical counterparts from finite element method, and extremely good agreement is found for temporal mound peaks.

Abstract:A multi‐scale, multi‐technique approach is proposed to characterise aquifer–stream interactions (ASIs) in lowland channelised perennial streams. The methodology is tested in two streams in Shelby County, Tennessee, revealing distinct hydrogeomorphic behaviours across and along the streams, challenging the ASI homogeneity notions typically assumed in groundwater models. The study emphasises the importance of site‐specific, multi‐scale investigations using diverse techniques to accurately characterise ASIs in lowland streams, highlighting the confounding influences of geological formations, anthropogenic alterations and depositional processes on groundwater–surface water interactions. Stream–aquifer interactions (SAIs) play a critical role in effective groundwater management, yet their complex dynamics remain poorly understood in channelized lowland perennial streams. This study presents a multi‐scale, multi‐technique investigation of SAIs along two long‐stream reaches in Tennessee, United States. The goal is to define a suitable methodology for characterising SAIs in this specific hydrological setting, serving as a starting point for developing a more standardised and replicable approach. The methodology includes an initial evaluation of various field techniques, followed by extensive surveys using potentiomanometers, electromagnetic induction (EMI), vertical temperature profilers (VTPs) and complementary methods such as seepage meters, bank tests and well‐data analyses. Results reveal distinct hydrogeomorphic behaviours across and along the streams, challenging the SAI‐homogeneity notions typically assumed in groundwater models. Nonconnah Creek exhibited streambed colmation and negligible hydraulic gradients, resulting in disconnection from the aquifer during low flows, except for a 300‐m losing reach with high downward gradients. In contrast, the Loosahatchie River displayed relatively homogeneous streambed properties and small, upward hydraulic gradients, suggesting uniform SAIs along the surveyed reaches. EMI proved highly effective for mapping streambed sediments quickly, while potentiomanometers accurately measured small head differences critical for understanding SAI dynamics. VTPs were less practical due to the extended data‐collection times required and their vulnerability to flooding. This study emphasises the importance of multi‐scale investigations using diverse techniques to accurately characterise SAIs in lowland streams, highlighting the confounding influences of geological formations, anthropogenic alterations and depositional processes on groundwater–surface water interactions. The findings contribute to refining local water balances, informing groundwater management strategies and underscoring the need for incorporating local‐scale field data into regional groundwater models. The proposed methodology serves as a foundation for developing a standardised approach for characterising SAIs in lowland channelized perennial streams, adaptable for similar stream systems worldwide.

Abstract:Reliable groundwater recharge quantification at the regional scale (e.g., watershed or subwatershed) is fundamental to sustainable water resource management. Although modeling at the watershed scale is gaining wide support, the long‐term monitoring needed for model calibration is often not readily available, as many watersheds worldwide remain ungauged. In response to this situation, we propose a new approach to estimate groundwater recharge at the watershed scale. This approach is fast and accurate and takes into account the existing variability without requiring long‐term monitoring. Only a single field campaign to acquire soil water content and pore water isotopic composition depth profiles is needed. The principle is to extend a physically based, one‐dimensional unsaturated zone flow model from the local (i.e., profile) to the watershed scale, using an index method for distributed recharge based on a GIS. The methodology was validated in a gauged watershed, where previous studies have estimated recharge using a spatialized water balance model calibrated using long‐term discharge monitoring data. Scaling was investigated by comparing recharge values obtained using the local‐scale approach at 10 study sites within the watershed with coinciding values obtained at the watershed scale. Recharge values were similar in terms of both dynamics and quantity. Using the pore water isotopic fingerprint of ungauged watersheds is therefore confirmed to be a suitable approach for understanding spatiotemporal recharge variability. Coupling 1D unsaturated zone model with GIS‐based method allows watershed‐scale recharge estimation. Pore water isotopes were used to determine soil hydraulic parameters without long‐term monitoring. This approach improves the understanding of time‐space variability of recharge in ungauged watershed.
