Abstract:We generalize results of Davie and Raeburn describing homotopy types of the group of invertible elements and of the set of idempotents of the projective tensor product of complex unital Banach algebras. We illustrate our results by specific examples.

Abstract:The left and right homological integrals are introduced for a large class of infinite dimensional Hopf algebras. Using the homological integrals we prove a version of Maschke's theorem for infinite dimensional Hopf algebras. The generalization of Maschke's theorem and homological integrals are the keys to study noetherian regular Hopf algebras of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension one.

Abstract:In this paper we explore new relations between Algebraic Topology and the theory of Hopf Algebras. For an arbitrary topological space $X$, the loop space homology $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$ is a Hopf algebra. We introduce a new homotopy invariant of a topological space $X$ taking for its value the isomorphism class (over the integers) of the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$. This invariant is trivial if and only if the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$ is isomorphic to a Lie-Hopf algebra, that is, to a primitively generated Hopf algebra. We show that for a given $X$ these invariants are obstructions to the existence of a homotopy equivalence $\Sigma X\simeq \Sigma^2Y$ for some space $Y$. Further on, using the notion of Hopf algebras, we establish new structural properties of the cohomology ring, in particular, of the cup product. For example, using the fact that the suspension of a polyhedral product $X$ is a double suspension, we obtain a strong condition on the cohomology ring structure of $X$. This gives an important application in toric topology. For an algebra to be realised as the cohomology ring of a moment-angle manifold $\Z_P$ associated to a simple polytope $P$, we found an obstruction in the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma \Z_P)$. In addition, we use homotopy decompositions to study particular Hopf algebras.

Abstract:We associate an algebra $\Gami(\fA)$ to each bornological algebra $\fA$. The algebra $\Gami(\fA)$ contains a two-sided ideal $I_{S(\fA)}$ for each symmetric ideal $S\triqui\elli$ of bounded sequences of complex numbers. In the case of $\Gami=\Gami(\C)$, these are all the two-sided ideals, and $I_S\mapsto J_S=\cB I_S\cB$ gives a bijection between the two-sided ideals of $\Gami$ and those of $\cB=\cB(\ell^2)$. We prove that Weibel's $K$-theory groups $KH_*(I_{S(\fA)})$ are homotopy invariant for certain ideals $S$ including $c_0$ and $\ell^p$. Moreover, if either $S=c_0$ and $\fA$ is a local $C^*$-algebra or $S=\ell^p,\ell^{p\pm}$ and $\fA$ is a local Banach algebra, then $KH_*(I_{S(\fA)})$ contains $K_*^{\top}(\fA)$ as a direct summand. Furthermore, we prove that for $S\in\{c_0,\ell^p,\ell^{p\pm}\}$ the map $K_*(\Gamma^\infty(\fA):I_{S(\fA)})\to KH_*(I_{S(\fA)})$ fits into a long exact sequence with the relative cyclic homology groups $HC_*(\Gamma^\infty(\fA):I_{S(\fA)})$. Thus the latter groups measure the failure of the former map to be an isomorphism.

Abstract:This paper studies the homotopy theory of algebras and homotopy algebras over an operad. It provides an exhaustive description of their higher homotopical properties using the more general notion of morphisms called infinity-morphisms. The method consists in using the operadic calculus to endow the category of coalgebras over the Koszul dual cooperad or the bar construction with a new type of model category structure, Quillen equivalent to that of algebras. We provide an explicit homotopy equivalence for infinity-morphisms, which gives a simple description of the homotopy category, and we endow the category of homotopy algebras with an infinity-category structure.

Abstract:The connected stable rank and the general stable rank are homotopy invariants for Banach algebras, whereas the Bass stable rank and the topological stable rank should be thought of as dimensional invariants. This paper studies the two homotopical stable ranks, viz. their general properties as well as specific examples and computations. The picture that emerges is that of a strong affinity between the homotopical stable ranks, and a marked contrast with the dimensional ones.

Abstract:Abstract We use Hodge theoretic methods to study homotopy types of complex projective manifolds with arbitrary fundamental groups. The main tool we use is the schematization functor $X \mapsto (X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ , introduced by the third author as a substitute for the rationalization functor in homotopy theory in the case of non-simply connected spaces. Our main result is the construction of a Hodge decomposition on $(X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ . This Hodge decomposition is encoded in an action of the discrete group $\mathbb {C}^{\times \delta }$ on the object $(X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ and is shown to recover the usual Hodge decomposition on cohomology, the Hodge filtration on the pro-algebraic fundamental group, and, in the simply connected case, the Hodge decomposition on the complexified homotopy groups. We show that our Hodge decomposition satisfies a purity property with respect to a weight filtration, generalizing the fact that the higher homotopy groups of a simply connected projective manifold have natural mixed Hodge structures. As applications we construct new examples of homotopy types which are not realizable as complex projective manifolds and we prove a formality theorem for the schematization of a complex projective manifold.

On the homotopy invariance of the twisted Lie algebroid cohomology

Abstract:Twisted Lie algebroid cohomologies, i.e. with values in representations, are shown to be Lie algebroid homotopy-invariant. Several important classes of examples are discussed. As an application, a generalized version of the Poincaré lemma is given in the transitive case. Together with the Mayer- Vietoris theorem, which holds in this more general context as well, this leads to a Künneth formula for the cohomologies of Lie algebroids with values in representations.

Abstract:In group representations several inductions given by tensoring with appropriate bimodules may be reconstructed via homology of $G$-posets with $G$-equivariant coefficients. For this purpose, we need various local categories of a finite group $G$, which afford the coefficients. Consequently, the functors among local categories give rise to the homology constructions naturally, and may be used to reformulate some existing results, as well as to deduce new statements.

Abstract:Given $f: M \to N$ a homotopy equivalence of compact manifolds with boundary, we use a construction of Geoghegan and Nicas to define its Reidemeister trace $[T] \in \pi_1^{st}(\mathcal{L} N, N)$. We realize the Goresky-Hingston coproduct as a map of spectra, and show that the failure of $f$ to entwine the spectral coproducts can be characterized by Chas-Sullivan multiplication with $[T]$. In particular, when $f$ is a simple homotopy equivalence, the spectral coproducts of $M$ and $N$ agree.

This tensor product is used in the description of the universal ($\alpha$-)central extensions of Hom-Leibniz algebras. Abstract:We show that the de Rham complex of any almost Hermitian manifold carries a natural commutative $BV_\infty$-algebra structure satisfying the degeneration property. In the almost Kähler case, this recovers Koszul's BV-algebra, defined for any Poisson manifold. As a consequence, both the Dolbeault and the de Rham cohomologies of any compact Hermitian manifold are canonically endowed with homotopy hypercommutative algebra structures, also known as formal homotopy Frobenius manifolds. Similar results are developed for (almost) symplectic manifolds with Lagrangian subbundles.

Abstract:We prove that the multiplication map L^a(M)\otimes_M L^b(M)\to L^{a+b}(M) is an isometric isomorphism of (quasi)Banach M-M-bimodules. Here L^a(M)=L_{1/a}(M) is the noncommutative L_p-space of an arbitrary von Neumann algebra M and \otimes_M denotes the algebraic tensor product over M equipped with the (quasi)projective tensor norm, but without any kind of completion. Similarly, the left multiplication map L^a(M)\to Hom_M(L^b(M),L^{a+b}(M)) is an isometric isomorphism of (quasi)Banach M-M-bimodules, where Hom_M denotes the algebraic internal hom. In particular, we establish an automatic continuity result for such maps. Applications of these results include establishing explicit algebraic equivalences between the categories of L_p(M)-modules of Junge and Sherman for all p\ge0, as well as identifying subspaces of the space of bilinear forms on L^p-spaces.

Abstract:Abstract This is the first installment in a series of papers illustrating how classical invariants of homological algebra and algebraic topology may be enriched with additional descriptive set theoretic information. To effect this enrichment, we show that many of these invariants may be naturally regarded as functors to the category, introduced herein, of groups with a Polish cover . The resulting definable invariants provide far stronger means of classification. In the present work we focus on the first derived functors of and . The resulting definable for pairs of countable abelian groups and definable for towers of Polish abelian groups substantially refine their classical counterparts. We show, for example, that the definable is a fully faithful contravariant functor from the category of finite‐rank torsion‐free abelian groups with no free summands; this contrasts with the fact that there are uncountably many non‐isomorphic such groups with isomorphic classical invariants . To facilitate our analysis, we introduce a general Ulam stability framework for groups with a Polish cover; within this framework we prove several rigidity results for non‐Archimedean abelian groups with a Polish cover. A special case of our main result answers a question of Kanovei and Reeken regarding quotients of ‐adic groups. Finally, using cocycle superrigidity methods for profinite actions of property (T) groups, we obtain a hierarchy of complexity degrees for the problem of classifying all group extensions of by up to base‐free isomorphism , when for prime numbers and .

Homology Homotopy and Applications

Abstract:A number of compactifications familiar in complex-analytic geometry, in particular, the Baily-Borel compactification and its toroidal variants, as well as the Deligne-Mumford compactifications, can be covered by open subsets whose nonempty intersections are Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. We exploit this fact to describe the (rational) homotopy type of these spaces and the natural maps between them in terms of the simplicial sets attached to certain categories. We thus generalize an old result of Charney-Lee on the Baily-Borel compactification of A_g and recover (and rephrase) a more recent one of Ebert-Giansiracusa on the Deligne-Mumford compactifications. We also describe an extension of the period map for Riemann surfaces (going from the Deligne-Mumford compactification to the Baily-Borel compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized varieties) in these terms.

Abstract:We start by clarifying and extending the multibraces notation, which economically describes substitutions of multilinear maps and tensor products of vectors. We give definitions and examples of homotopy algebras, strongly homotopy Gerstenhaber and Gerstenhaber bracket algebras, and strongly homotopy Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras. We show that a homotopy algebra structure on a vector space can be lifted to its Hochschild complex, and also suggest an induction method to generate explicit strongly homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra maps on a topological vertex operator algebra (TVOA), their existence having been proven by Kimura, Voronov, and Zuckerman in 1996 (later amended by Voronov). The contention that this is the fundamental structure on a TVOA is substantiated by providing an annotated dictionary of strongly homotopy BV algebra maps and identities found by Lian and Zuckerman in 1993.

Abstract:Given an algebraic theory $\ct$, a homotopy $\ct$-algebra is a simplicial set where all equations from $\ct$ hold up to homotopy. All homotopy $\ct$-algebras form a homotopy variety. We give a characterization of homotopy varieties analogous to the characterization of varieties. We will also study homotopy models of limit theories which leads to homotopy locally presentable categories. These were recently considered by Simpson, Lurie, Toën and Vezzosi.

Abstract:We present a slight variation on a notion of weak \infty-groupoid introduced by Grothendieck in Pursuing Stacks and we study the homotopy theory of these \infty-groupoids. We prove that the obvious definition for homotopy groups of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids does not depend on any choice. This allows us to give equivalent characterizations of weak equivalences of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids, generalizing a well-known result for strict \infty-groupoids. On the other hand, given a model category M in which every object is fibrant, we construct, following Grothendieck, a fundamental \infty-groupoid functor \Pi_\infty from M to the category of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids. We show that if X is an object of M, then the homotopy groups of \Pi_\infty(X) and of X are canonically isomorphic. We deduce that the functor \Pi_\infty respects weak equivalences.
