Abstract:In liquid-phase exfoliation for the production of 2D nanomaterials fluid forces are used to gently overcome adhesive interlayer forces, leading to single- or few-layer 2D nanomaterials. Predicting accurately the critical fluid shear rate for exfoliation is a crucial challenge. By combining notions of fluid mechanics and fracture mechanics, we analyse a mathematical model of exfoliation, focusing on the $\pi$-peel regime in which bending forces are much smaller than the applied hydrodynamic forces. We find that in this regime the shear rate is approximately proportional to the adhesion energy, independent of the bending rigidity of the exfoliated sheet, and inversely proportional to the size $a$ of a (assumed pre-existing) material flaw. The model appears to give values comparable to those obtained in wet ball milling, but to overestimate the shear rate values reported for turbulent exfoliation (by rotor mixing or microfluidization). We suggest that for turbulent exfoliation a "cleavage model" may be more appropriate, as it gives a stronger dependence on $a$ and smaller critical shear rates.

Abstract:Liquid-phase exfoliation, the use of a sheared liquid to delaminate graphite into few-layer graphene, is a promising technique for the large-scale production of graphene. However, the microscale and nanoscale fluid-structure processes controlling the exfoliation are not fully understood. Here, we perform non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of a defect-free graphite nanoplatelet suspended in a shear flow and measure the critical shear rate <math>γ̇c</math> needed for the exfoliation to occur. We compare <math>γ̇c</math> for different solvents, including water and N-methyl-pyrrolidone, and nanoplatelets of different lengths. Using a theoretical model based on a balance between the work done by viscous shearing forces and the change in interfacial energies upon layer sliding, we are able to predict the critical shear rates <math>γ̇c</math> measured in simulations. We find that an accurate prediction of the exfoliation of short graphite nanoplatelets is possible only if both hydrodynamic slip and the fluid forces on the graphene edges are considered and if an accurate value of the solid–liquid surface energy is used. The commonly used "geometric-mean" approximation for the solid–liquid energy leads to grossly incorrect predictions.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides have been identified and drawn much attention over the last few years for their unique structural and electronic properties. However, their rise begins only after these materials are successfully isolated from their layered assemblies or adhesive substrates into individual monolayers. Mechanical exfoliation and transfer are the most successful techniques to obtain high-quality single- or few-layer nanocrystals from their native multi-layer structures or their substrate for growth, which involves interfacial peeling and intralayer tearing processes that are controlled by material properties, geometry and the kinetics of exfoliation. This procedure is rationalized in this work through theoretical analysis and atomistic simulations. We propose a criterion to assess the feasibility for the exfoliation of two-dimensional sheets from an adhesive substrate without fracturing itself, and explore the effects of material and interface properties, as well as the geometrical, kinetic factors on the peeling behaviors and the torn morphology. This multi-scale approach elucidates the microscopic mechanism of the mechanical processes, offering predictive models and tools for the design of experimental procedures to obtain single- or few-layer two-dimensional materials and structures.

Abstract:A theoretical framework for analyzing the mechanical exfoliation of 2D materials at finite temperature is introduced. As an example, this framework, based on transition-state theory and calculation of the reaction pathway, is applied to the mechanical exfoliation of multilayer MoS2 . Abstract:In this work, starting from an approach previously proposed by the Authors, we put forward an extension to the large deformation regime of the dimensionally-reduced formulation for peridynamic thin plates, including both hyperelasticity and fracture. In particular, the model, validated against numerical simulations, addresses the problem of the peeling in nonlocal thin films, which when attached to a soft substrate highlights how nonlocality of the peeled-off layer might greatly influence the whole structural response and induce some unforeseen mechanical behaviours that could be useful for engineering applications. Through a key benchmark example, we in fact demonstrate that de-localization of damage and less destructive failure modes take place, these effects suggesting the possibility of ad hoc conceiving specific networks of nonlocal interactions between material particles, corresponding to lattice-equivalent structure of the nonlocal model treated, of interest in designing new material systems and interfaces with enhanced toughness and adhesive properties.

Abstract:A wide variety of two-dimensional layered materials are synthesized by liquid-phase exfoliation. Here we examine exfoliation of MoS2 into nanosheets in a mixture of water and isopropanol (IPA) containing cavitation bubbles. Using force fields optimized with experimental data on interfacial energies between MoS2 and the solvent, multimillion-atom molecular dynamics simulations are performed in conjunction with experiments to examine shock-induced collapse of cavitation bubbles and the resulting exfoliation of MoS2. The collapse of cavitation bubbles generates high-speed nanojets and shock waves in the solvent. Large shear stresses due to the nanojet impact on MoS2 surfaces initiate exfoliation, and shock waves reflected from MoS2 surfaces enhance exfoliation. Structural correlations in the solvent indicate that shock induces an ice VII like motif in the first solvation shell of water.

Abstract:Exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) materials into mono- or few layers is of significance for both fundamental studies and potential applications. In this report, for the first time surface tension components were directly probed and matched to predict solvents with effective liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) capability for 2D materials such as graphene, h-BN, WS2, MoS2, MoSe2, Bi2Se3, TaS2, and SnS2. Exfoliation efficiency is enhanced when the ratios of the surface tension components of the applied solvent is close to that of the 2D material in question. We enlarged the library of low-toxic and common solvents for LPE. Our study provides distinctive insight into LPE and has pioneered a rational strategy for LPE of 2D materials with high yield.

Abstract:The lifting, peeling and exfoliation of physisorbed ribbons (or flakes) of 2D material such as graphene off a solid surface are common and important manoeuvres in nanoscience. The feature that makes this case peculiar is the structural lubricity generally realized by stiff 2D material contacts. We model theoretically the mechanical peeling of a nanoribbon of graphene as realized by the tip-forced lifting of one of its extremes off a flat crystal surface. The evolution of shape, energy, local curvature and body advancement are ideally expected to follow a succession of regimes: (A) initial prying, (B) peeling with stretching but without sliding (stripping), (C) peeling with sliding, (D) liftoff. In the case where in addition the substrate surface corrugation is small or negligible, then (B) disappears, and we find that the (A)-(C) transition becomes universal, analytical and sharp, determined by the interplay between bending rigidity and adsorption energy. This general two-stage peeling transition is identified as a sharp crossover in published data of graphene nanoribbons pulled off an atomic-scale Au(111) substrate.

Abstract:Ultrasonic Liquid Phase Exfoliation (LPE) has gathered attention from both scientific and industrial communities for its accessibility and cost-effectiveness in producing graphene. However, this technique has faced challenges such as low yield and long production time. In this study, we developed a cyclic ultrasonication system to exfoliate expanded graphite (EG) by applying static pressure to a flow chamber to address these challenges. Using deionized water (DIW) as solvent and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as dispersion, we obtained graphene slurries with an average lateral size of 7 μm and averaged number of layers of 3.5 layers, after 40 min of ultrasonication. After centrifugation, the yield of single and bilayer graphene was approximately 16 %. The findings showed that regulating hydrostatic pressure can effectively affect the lateral size and number of layers of few-layer graphene. The proposed method is of good potential for scaled-up production of few-layer graphene.
Near-wall depletion and layering affect contact line friction of multicomponent liquids

Abstract:The main causes of energy dissipation in micro- and nano-scale wetting are viscosity and liquid-solid friction localized in the three-phase contact line region. Theoretical models predict the contactline friction coefficient to correlate with the shear viscosity of the wetting fluid. Experiments conducted to investigate such correlation have not singled out a unique scaling law between the two coefficients. We perform Molecular Dynamics simulations of liquid water-glycerol droplets wetting silica-like surfaces, aimed to demystify the effect of viscosity on contact line friction. The viscosity of the fluid is tuned by changing the relative mass fraction of glycerol in the mixture and it is estimated both via equilibrium and non-equilibrium Molecular Dynamics simulations. Contact line friction is measured directly by inspecting the velocity of the moving contact line and the microscopic contact angle. It is found that the scaling between contact line friction and viscosity is sub-linear, contrary to the prediction of Molecular Kinetic Theory. The disagreement is explained by accounting for the depletion of glycerol in the near-wall region. A correction is proposed, based on multicomponent Molecular Kinetic Theory and the definition of a re-scaled interfacial friction coefficient.

Liquid-Phase Exfoliation of 3D Metal-Organic Frameworks into Nanosheets

Abstract:Traditionally, the acquisition of 2D materials involved the exfoliation of layered crystals. However, the anisotropic bonding arrangements within 3D crystals indicate they are mechanically reminiscent of 2D counterparts and could also be exfoliated into nanosheets. This report delineates the preparation of 2D nanosheets from six representative 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through liquid-phase exfoliation. Notably, the cleavage planes of exfoliated nanosheets align perpendicular to the direction of the minimum elastic modulus (Emin) within the pristine 3D frameworks. The findings suggest that the in-plane and out-of-plane bonding forces of the exfoliated nanosheets can be correlated with the maximum elastic modulus (Emax) and Emin of the 3D frameworks, respectively. Emax influences the ease of cleaving adjacent layers, while Emin governs the ability to resist cracking of layers. Hence, a combination of large Emax and small Emin indicates an efficient exfoliation process, and vice versa. The ratio of Emax/Emin, denoted as Amax/min, is adopted as a universal index to quantify the ease of mechanical exfoliation for 3D MOFs. This ratio, readily accessible through mechanical experiments and computation, serves as a valuable metric for selecting appropriate exfoliation methods to produce surfactant-free 2D nanosheets from various 3D materials.
Thin Film Evaporation Modeling of the Liquid Microlayer Region in a Dewetting Water Bubble

Abstract:Understanding the mechanism of bubble growth is crucial to modeling boiling heat transfer and enabling the development of technological applications, such as energy systems and thermal management processes, which rely on boiling to achieve the high heat fluxes required for their operation. This paper presents analyses of the evaporation of “microlayers”, i.e., ultra-thin layers of liquid present beneath steam bubbles growing at the heated surface in the atmospheric pressure nucleate of boiling water. Evaporation of the microlayer is believed to be a major contributor to the phase change heat transfer, but its evolution, spatio-temporal stability, and impact on macroscale bubble dynamics are still poorly understood. Mass, momentum, and energy transfer in the microlayer are modeled with a lubrication theory approach that accounts for capillary and intermolecular forces and interfacial mass transfer. The model is embodied in a third-order nonlinear film evolution equation, which is solved numerically. Variable wall-temperature boundary conditions are applied at the solid–liquid interface to account for conjugate heat transfer due to evaporative heat loss at the liquid–vapor interface. Predictions obtained with the current approach compare favorably with experimental measurements of microlayer evaporation. By comparing film profiles at a sequence of times into the ebullition cycle of a single bubble, likely values of evaporative heat transfer coefficients were inferred and found to fall within the range of previously reported estimates. The result suggests that the coefficients may not be a constant, as previously assumed, but instead something that varies with time during the ebullition cycle.
Viscoelastic peeling of thin tapes with frictional sliding

Abstract:Peeling is one of the most common detachment mechanisms adopted in industrial applications. However, although several experimental investigations have proven the possible occurrence of relative sliding at the interface close to the peeling front, a comprehensive model considering the effect of both the tape viscoelasticity and frictional interfacial dissipation on the peeling behavior is lacking. The present study aims at providing a theoretical framework to investigate the peeling process of a thin viscoelastic tape from a rigid substrate in the presence of frictional sliding at the interface. It shows that, under certain conditions, significantly tougher adhesive performance can be achieved compared to stuck elastic conditions with no interfacial sliding, and that the delamination resistance of the system strongly depends on the propagation velocity.

Abstract:Biosurfactant-aided liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) is emerging as a biocompatible, green, economical, safe, and efficient approach to prepare two-dimensional (2D) materials for biomedical applications. However, relatively little is known about the molecular mechanisms of this process. Herein, we present the first study of how flavin mononucleotide (FMN) interacts with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanosheets in the context of LPE. We demonstrate that FMN molecules can self-assemble on hBN via π-π interactions, as well as intermolecular hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) between the isoalloxazine moieties. Binding free energy analysis has shown FMN to be an efficient surfactant for LPE of hBN in water. According to the theoretical simulations, stable water suspension of hBN were experimentally obtained by LPE using FMN. With this work, we aim to exemplify how molecular dynamics (MD) simulation can predict and guide empirical LPE experiments, direct the surfactant screening and improve scalable production of 2D materials for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) has emerged as a promising method for the industrial-scale production of graphene. However, one of its critical steps, namely sonication, has faced challenges due to high power consumption and low efficiency, leading to limited applicability in industrial settings. This study introduces a novel, cost-effective microfluidic sonication device designed to significantly reduce power consumption while efficiently assisting the LPE process for graphene production. By coupling a capillary with a buzzer and applying an appropriate electric signal, simulation and particle tracing experiments reveal the generation of robust shear forces resulting from acoustic streaming and cavitation when the capillary end is immersed in the liquid. For the first time, the capillary-based sonication device was effectively utilized for graphene exfoliation in a DMF (N,N-Dimethylformamide) + NaOH liquid phase system. The SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) and Raman characterization results corroborate the successful exfoliation of 100 nm with thicknesses below 10 nm graphene sheets from graphite flakes using this pioneering device. The values of I2D/IG increase after processing, which suggests the exfoliation of graphite flakes into thinner graphene sheets. The vibration-based acoustofluidic effector represents a versatile and scalable miniature device, capable of being employed individually for small-batch production, thereby optimizing the utilization of raw 2D materials, particularly in experimental scenarios. Alternatively, it holds the potential for large-scale manufacturing through extensive parallelization, offering distinct advantages in terms of cost-efficiency and minimal power consumption.

Abstract:Liquid phase exfoliation is a commonly used method to produce 2D nanosheets from a range of layered crystals. However, such nanosheets display broad size and thickness distributions and correlations between area and thickness, issues that limit nanosheet application potential. To understand the factors controlling the exfoliation process, we have liquid-exfoliated 11 different layered materials, size-selecting each into fractions before using AFM to measure the nanosheet length, width, and thickness distributions for each fraction. The resultant data show a clear power-law scaling of nanosheet area with thickness for each material. We have developed a simple nonequilibrium thermodynamics-based model predicting that the power-law prefactor is proportional to both the ratios of in-plane-tearing/out-of-plane-peeling energies and in-plane/out-of-plane moduli. By comparing the experimental data with the modulus ratio calculated from first-principles, we find close agreement between experiment and theory. This supports our hypothesis that energy equipartition holds between nanosheet tearing and peeling during sonication-assisted exfoliation.

Abstract:Classical approaches to modeling fracture have proved successful in applications for which the highly deformed region near a crack tip is small compared to any other relevant dimensions in the structure. The classical theory relies on phenomenological criteria for material failure that lack a physics-based description of the fracture process itself. Small scale, thin film structures pose difficulties for analysis by these approaches because they contain complicated geometry and many interfaces within the fracture process zone itself. Moreover, plastic flow in metal layers is often severely constrained by the surrounding structure, causing the plastic dissipation part of the overall fracture energy consumed by debonding to be a strong function of geometry. Therefore, it can no longer be regarded as an intrinsic material property. To improve the fracture characterization of these structures, one must develop a physically sound methodology capable of separating the contribution of plastic flow, and other sources of dissipation, from the work of adhesion consumed at the crack tip. In this study, we investigate the parameters affecting energy dissipation by interfacial debonding in a multilayered structure. Interlayer decohesion is modeled using the Virtual Internal Bond constitutive model. We compare our predicted variations in the macroscopic fracture energy with experimental results for varying layer geometry. We also characterize the effect of variations in material properties and other experimental uncertainties in the resulting debonding behavior.
