Abstract:We develop a Nitsche finite element method for a model of Euler--Bernoulli beams with axial stiffness embedded in a two--dimensional elastic bulk domain. The beams have their own displacement fields, and the elastic subdomains created by the beam network are triangulated independently and are coupled to the beams weakly by use of Nitsche's method in the framework of hybridization.

Abstract:We formulate and analyze a Nitsche-type algorithm for frictional contact problems. The method is derived from, and analyzed as, a stabilized finite element method and shown to be quasi-optimal, as well as suitable as an adaptive scheme through an a posteriori error analysis. The a posteriori error indicators are validated in a numerical experiment.

Abstract:Large deformation problems in practical engineering are often accompanied by contact phenomena. While the conventional material point method (MPM) is efficient at solving large deformation problems, it cannot handle slip contacts. This paper presents Nitsche's method for analysing large deformations with frictional contact via the MPM. Nitsche's method has good features of variational consistency and no additional unknowns, and it is integrated into the MPM in a weak manner based on the principle of virtual power. Within the integrated formulation, both biased and unbiased computational schemes are derived to adapt to different forms of contact. Additionally, B-spline shape functions are employed to alleviate cell-crossing noise, and an improved particle extrapolation approach for accurate contact detection is introduced. The efficacy of the proposed Nitsche-based MPM is validated through several representative benchmarks from the literature. We further apply the proposed method to simulate the water leakage problem of the lining gasketed joint in shield tunnels. Comparison with experimental results demonstrates the applicability of the proposed method.

A reduced basis method for frictional contact problems formulated with Nitsche's method

Abstract:We develop an efficient reduced basis method for the frictional contact problem formulated using Nitsche's method. We focus on the regime of small deformations and on Tresca friction. The key idea ensuring the computational efficiency of the method is to treat the nonlinearity resulting from the contact and friction conditions by means of the Empirical Interpolation Method. The proposed algorithm is applied to the Hertz contact problem between two half-disks with parameter-dependent radius. We also highlight the benefits of the present approach with respect to the mixed (primal-dual) formulation.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the Nitsche's method for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations on Lipschitz domains under minimal regularity assumptions. Our analysis provides a robust formulation for implementing slip (i.e. Navier) boundary conditions in arbitrarily complex boundaries. The well-posedness of the discrete problem is established using the Banach Nečas Babuška and the Banach fixed point theorems under standard small data assumptions, and we also provide optimal convergence rates for the approximation error. Furthermore, we propose a VMS-LES stabilized formulation, which allows the simulation of incompressible fluids at high Reynolds numbers. We validate our theory through numerous numerical tests in well established benchmark problems.

Abstract:An elastic contact model for three-dimensional similar and dissimilar materials under coupled normal load and tangential load in the contact plane,with consideration of partial slip effects,is studied. When two surfaces in static contacts are subjected to normal load and tangential load,even only applying a normal load for dissimilar materials,microscopic slip will take place at certain areas of the contact region even though the contacting bodies remain still without macroscopic movement. The semi-analytical method is used to solve the partial contact problems,in which analytical solutions of displacements due to unit pressure or shear tractions are based on green function. The contact pressure and shear tractions are solved by a numerical procedure based on conjugate gradient method and fast Fourier transform technique. The meshes are applied to the positions just in the contact areas of interest,which saves the computing time. The good agreement with the results from Cattaneo-Mindlin's solution validates the numerical method. The analysis is extended to the sinusoidal wave contact to provide a further demonstration for the pressure distributions,shear stress distributions and stick regions. The results show that the stick regions are located at several disconnected areas due to the roughness effects. With the increase of tangential force,the pressure distribution inclines along the opposite direction of tangential force,the value of shear stress τx becomes positive and the stick zones shrink and move opposite to the direction of tangential force.
FFT-Based Numerical Method for Non-Linear Elastic Contact

Abstract:Abstract Based on FFT, a numerical method suitable for elastoplastic and hyperelastic frictionless contact is proposed in this paper, which can be used to solve 2D and 3D contact problems. The non-linear elastic contact problem is transformed to linear elastic contact considering residual deformation (or equivalent residual deformation). Numerical simulations for elastic, elastoplastic and hyperelastic contact between hemisphere and rigid plane are compared with the results of finite element method (FEM) to verify the accuracy of the numerical method. Compared with the existing elastoplastic contact numerical methods, the calculation efficiency is improved while ensuring a certain calculation accuracy (pressure error does not exceed 15% while calculation time does not exceed 10 minutes in a 64×64 grid). For hyperelastic contact, the proposed method reduces the dependence of the approximation result on load as in linear elastic approximation. Despite a certain error, the simplified numerical method shows a better approximation result than linear elastic contact approximation, which can be used for the fast solution in engineering applications. Finally, taking the sealing application as an example, the contact and leakage rate between 3D complicated rough surfaces are calculated.

Abstract:The elastic contact of rough surfaces and the subsurface stresses caused by the contact have been analyzed by means of a numerical model based on fast Fourier transforms (FFT) and minimization of complementary energy. The elastic contact has been modeled mathematically as a linear complementarity problem and solved by a robust algorithm, Conjugate Gradient Method, while the force-displacement relation is determined through a FFT approach. After solving for the pressure distribution, the subsurface stress field is obtained by calculating the stresses due to the application of a point force, and then integrating over the contact region. In comparison with the matrix based method published in recent years, the numerical approach presented in this study is move efficient, move stable and requires less memory. It has great potential in application to problems with general contact geometry and three-dimensional surface roughness. The results show that high frequency roughness could lend to very sharp impulses and significant oscillations in pressure distribution The amplitude and location of the maximum shear stress in the subsurface region are constantly changing,when the contacting rough surfaces are in relative motion.

Abstract:A Nitsche stabilized finite element method is proposed for heat & mass transfer and fluid–structure interaction. The GLS/PSPG stabilization is employed to stabilize the finite element formulation. The Nitsche's methods are employed to weakly impose the Dirichlet condition for heat & mass transfer. An upwind term is included in Nitsche's methods to enhance the stability for fast moving interfaces. The Ghost penalty method is employed to control the jumps across the cut cells. The projection-based adaptive Gauss quadrature (PAGQ) scheme is used for the numerical integration of the discontinuous function. The nonlinear advection–diffusion equations are linearized by Newton procedure. The second-order accurate unconditionally stable generalized-α time integration is implemented to march the solution in time. The fluid and the structure equations are weakly coupled by a second-order accurate staggered-partitioned scheme. Numerical examples include the cases of fixed/vibrating/rotating cylinder(s) for heat & mass transfer and fluid–structure interaction in enclosure and external flow. The obtained numerical results match well with the experiments, the empirical correlation and the numerical simulations in literature. This methodology efficiently and accurately simulates the complex physics of heat & mass transfer.

Abstract:A Nitsche-based element-free Galerkin (EFG) method for solving semilinear elliptic problems is developed and analyzed in this paper. The existence and unique-ness of the weak solution for semilinear elliptic problems are proved based on a con-dition that the nonlinear term is an increasing Lipschitz continuous function of the unknown function. A simple iterative scheme is used to deal with the nonlinear in-tegral term. We proved the existence, uniqueness and convergence of the weak solu-tion sequence for continuous level of the simple iterative scheme. A commonly used assumption for approximate space, sometimes called inverse assumption, is proved. Optimal order error estimates in L2 and H1 norms are proved for the linear and semi-linear elliptic problems. In the actual numerical calculation, the characteristic distance h does not appear explicitly in the parameter & beta; introduced by the Nitsche method. The theoretical results are confirmed numerically.

Abstract:We present an a posteriori error estimate based on equilibrated stress reconstructions for the finite element approximation of a unilateral contact problem with weak enforcement of the contact conditions. We start by proving a guaranteed upper bound for the dual norm of the residual. This norm is shown to control the natural energy norm up to a boundary term, which can be removed under a saturation assumption. The basic estimate is then refined to distinguish the different components of the error, and is used as a starting point to design an algorithm including adaptive stopping criteria for the nonlinear solver and automatic tuning of a regularization parameter. We then discuss an actual way of computing the stress reconstruction based on the Arnold–Falk–Winther finite elements. Finally, after briefly discussing the efficiency of our estimators, we showcase their performance on a panel of numerical tests.

Abstract:In this work a Nitsche-based imposition of generalized Navier conditions on cut meshes for the Oseen problem is presented. Other methods from literature dealing with the generalized Navier condition impose this condition by means of substituting the tangential Robin condition in a classical Galerkin way. These methods work fine for a large slip length coefficient but lead to conditioning and stability issues when it approaches zero. We introduce a novel method for the weak imposition of the generalized Navier condition which remains well-posed and stable for arbitrary choice of slip length, including zero. The method proposed here builds on the formulation done by Juntunen and Stenberg (2009). They impose a Robin condition for the Poisson problem by means of Nitsche’s method for an arbitrary combination of the Dirichlet and Neumann parts of the condition. The analysis conducted for the proposed method is done in a similar fashion as in Massing et al. (2018), but is done here for a more general type of boundary condition. The analysis proves stability for all flow regimes and all choices of slip lengths. Also an L 2 -optimal estimate for the velocity error is shown, which was not conducted in the previously mentioned work. A numerical example is carried out for varying slip lengths to verify the robustness and stability of the method with respect to the choice of slip length. Even though proofs and formulations are presented for the more general case of an unfitted grid method, they can easily be reduced to the simpler case of a boundary-fitted grid with the removal of the ghost-penalty stabilization terms.

Abstract:With the development of multi-layer elastic systems in the field of engineering mechanics, the corresponding variational inequality theory and algorithm design have received more attention and research. In this study, a class of equivalent saddle point problems with interlayer Tresca friction conditions and the mixed finite element method are proposed and analyzed. Then, the convergence of the numerical solution of the mixed finite element method is theoretically proven, and the corresponding algebraic dual algorithm is given. Finally, through numerical experiments, the mixed finite element method is not only compared with the layer decomposition method, but also its convergence relationship with respect to the spatial discretization parameter $H$ is verified.

Abstract:Finite element simulations of frictional multi-body contact problems via conformal meshes can be challenging and computationally demanding. To render geometrical features, unstructured meshes must be used and this unavoidably increases the degrees of freedom and therefore makes the construction of slave/master pairs more demanding. In this work, we introduce an implicit material point method designed to bypass the meshing of bodies by employing level set functions to represent boundaries at structured grids. This implicit function representation provides an elegant mean to link an unbiased intermediate reference surface with the true boundaries by closest point projection as shown in leichner et al. (2019). We then enforce the contact constraints by a penalty method where the Coulomb friction law is implemented as an elastoplastic constitutive model such that a return mapping algorithm can be used to provide constitutive updates for both the stick and slip states. To evolve the geometry of the contacts properly, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is solved incrementally such that the level set and material points are both updated accord to the deformation field. To improve the accuracy and regularity of the numerical integration of the material point method, a moving least square method is used to project numerical values of the material points back to the standard locations for Gaussian-Legendre quadrature. Several benchmarks are used to verify the proposed model. Comparisons with discrete element simulations are made to analyze the importance of stress fields on predicting the macroscopic responses of granular assemblies.

Abstract:Nonlinear multi-point constraints are essential in modeling various engineering problems, for example in the context of (a) linking individual degrees of freedom of multiple nodes to model nonlinear joints, (b) coupling different element types in finite element analysis, (c) enforcing various types of rigidity in parts of the mesh and (d) considering deformation-dependent Dirichlet boundary conditions. One method for addressing constraints is the master–slave elimination, which offers the benefit of reducing the problem dimension as opposed to Lagrange multipliers and the penalty method. However, the existing master–slave elimination method is limited to linear constraints. In this paper, we introduce a new master–slave elimination method for handling arbitrary smooth nonlinear multi-point constraints in the system of equations of the discretized system. We present a rigorous mathematical derivation of the method. Within this method, new constraints can be easily considered as an item of a "constraint library"; i.e. no case-by-case-programming is required. In addition to the theoretical aspects, we also provide helpful remarks on the efficient implementation. Among others, we show that the new method results in a reduced computational complexity compared to the existing methods. The study also places emphasis on comparing the new approach with existing methods via numerical examples. We have developed innovative benchmarks which encompass all relevant computational properties, and provide analytical and reference solutions. Our findings demonstrate that our new method is as accurate, robust and flexible as the Lagrange multipliers, and more efficient due to the reduction of the total number of degrees of freedom, which is particularly advantageous when a large number of constraints have to be considered.

On Elastic Line Contact

Abstract:Two-dimensional elastic half-space contact theory suffers from the defect that the surface displacement with respect to infinity becomes infinitely large when the total force carried by the half space is different from zero. Several authors removed this defect by altering the geometry so that the depth of the elastic body becomes finite. In the present paper another approach is chosen by considering contact areas which are many times as long as they are wide, but which still are small as compared with a characteristic dimension of the body which is approximated by the half space. As one of the examples, the Hertz problem is considered, and the asymptotic results are compared with the exact theory. It is found that errors of 10–15 percent are found when the contact ellipse is twice as long as wide, and errors of 2–3 percent are encountered when the ratio of the axes is five.

Abstract:Contact phenomenon widely exists in engineering, which is a high nonlinearity problem. However, the majority of open source contact finite element codes are written in C++, which are difficult for junior researchers to adopt and use. Therefore, this paper provides an open source 528-line MATLAB code and detailed interpretation for frictional contact finite element analysis considering large deformation, which is easy to learn and use by newcomers. This paper describes the contact projection, contact nodal forces and contact tangent stiffness matrices. The nonlinear equations are solved by the Newton–Raphson method. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the MATLAB codes. The displacement, Cauchy stress and contact traction results are compared with the open-source software FEBIO.

Abstract:We consider the unilateral contact problem between an elastic body and a rigid foundation in a description that includes both Tresca and Coulomb friction conditions. For this problem, we present an a posteriori error analysis based on an equilibrated stress reconstruction in the Arnold--Falk--Winther space that includes a guaranteed upper bound distinguishing the different components of the error. This analysis is the starting point for the development of an adaptive algorithm including a stopping criterion for the generalized Newton method. This algorithm is then used to perform numerical simulations that validate the theoretical results.
