Abstract:SummaryIn this paper, we develop a coupled continuous Galerkin and discontinuous Galerkin finite element method based on a split scheme to solve the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. In order to use the equal order interpolation functions for velocity and pressure, we decouple the original Navier–Stokes equations and obtain three distinct equations through the split method, which are nonlinear hyperbolic, elliptic, and Helmholtz equations, respectively. The hybrid method combines the merits of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) and finite element method (FEM). Therefore, DG is concerned to accomplish the spatial discretization of the nonlinear hyperbolic equation to avoid using the stabilization approaches that appeared in FEM. Moreover, FEM is utilized to deal with the Poisson and Helmholtz equations to reduce the computational cost compared with DG. As for the temporal discretization, a second‐order stiffly stable approach is employed. Several typical benchmarks, namely, the Poiseuille flow, the backward‐facing step flow, and the flow around the cylinder with a wide range of Reynolds numbers, are considered to demonstrate and validate the feasibility, accuracy, and efficiency of this coupled method. Abstract:Coupling the finite volume method (FVM) and the moving-particle semi-implicit (MPS) method, a conservative hybrid method is proposed for simulation of incompressible interfacial flow. In this hybrid method, bulk flow is resolved using the multi-moment constrained interpolation profile (CIP) FVM while the interface region is rendered using moving particles calculated by several enhanced MPS schemes. A new boundary condition is developed for particles located on the boundary of the interface. Numerical particles in the MPS method are used to determine the density of each mesh cell and the conservation of mass is guaranteed by a volume-fraction remedy procedure. The approach allows accurate interface tracking without diminishing numerical efficiency. Several benchmark simulations are conducted to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed hybrid method.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a combined finite element/discontinuous Galerkin/level set method to simulate the incompressible two phase flow. The level set method is employed to capture the moving interface because of its simplicity and efficiency when dealing with the significant interface deformations. Due to the hyperbolic nature of the level set equation and the level set re-initialization equation, we apply the second order Runge Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method to get the stable and precise results. Moreover, in order to obtain the accurate velocity field, the hybrid continuous and discontinuous Galerkin approach is utilized to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In our combined method, there is no need to re-initialize the level set function in every time step and the re-initialization process is implemented after suitable time steps. The desirable mass conservation property is able to be guaranteed with a mass correction technique in the combined algorithm. In addition, the stabilization terms can be avoided in the whole computational process. Several challenging problems, i.e., a rising bubble, the dam-break flow, the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, and the complex metal casting process in the engineering applications are investigated to evaluate the feasibility, validity and practicability of our approach for solving the problem of the incompressible two phase flow.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an extended ghost fluid method (GFM) for computations of inviscid compressible multifluids in Lagrangian coordinate. That is, we capture the appropriate interface conditions by defining a fluid that has the velocity and the pressure of the real fluid at each point, but the entropy or the internal energy of some other fluid. Meanwhile, a single-fluid solver, CWENO-type central-upwind scheme, is developed in Lagrangian coordinate. The high resolution and the non-oscillatory quality of the scheme can be verified by solving several numerical experiments.

Abstract:We propose a hybrid scheme for computations of incompressible two-phase flows. The incompressible constraint has been replaced by a pressure Poisson-like equation and then the pressure is updated by the modified marker and cell method. Meanwhile, the moment equations in the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations are solved by our semi- discrete Hermite central-upwind scheme, and the interface between the two fluids is considered to be continuous and is described implicitly as the 0.5 level set of a smooth function being a smeared out Heaviside function. It is here named the hybrid scheme. Some numerical experiments are successfully carried out, which verify the desired efficiency and accuracy of our hybrid scheme.

Abstract:SummaryIn this paper, a numerical method, which is about the coupling of continuous and discontinuous Galerkin method based on the splitting scheme, is presented for the calculation of viscoelastic flows of the Oldroyd‐B fluid. The momentum equation is discretized in time by using the Adams‐Bashforth second‐order algorithm, and then decoupled via the splitting approach. Considering the Oldroyd‐B constitutive equation, the second‐order Runge‐Kutta approach is selected to complete the temporal discretization. As for the spatial discretizations, the fundamental purpose is to make the best of finite element method (FEM) and discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method to handle different types of equations. Specifically speaking, for the subequations, FEM is chosen to treat the Poisson and Helmholtz equations, and DG is employed to deal with the nonlinear convective term. In addition, because of the hyperbolic nature, DG is also utilized to discretize the Oldroyd‐B constitutive equation spatially. This coupled method avoids resorting to extra stabilization technique occurred in standard FEM framework even for moderately high values of Weissenberg number and also reduces the complexity compared with unified DG scheme. The Oldroyd‐B model is applied to investigate several typical and challenging benchmarks, such as the 4:1 planar contraction flow and the lid‐driven cavity flow, with a wide range of Weissenberg number to illustrate the feasibility, robustness, and validity of our coupled method.

Abstract:We present a hybrid scheme for computations of three-dimensional incompressible two-phase flows. A Poisson-like pressure equation is deduced from the incompressible constraint, i.e., the divergence-free condition of the velocity field, via an extended marker and cell method, and the moment equations in the 3D incompressible Navier–Stokes equations are solved by our 3D semi-discrete Hermite central-upwind scheme. The interface between the two fluids is considered to be the 0.5 level set of a smooth function being a smeared out Heaviside function. Abstract:The aim of this work is to develop a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for elliptic problems. In the proposed method, the numerical flux functions are constructed from the weak formulation of primal equation directly without converting the second-order equation to a first-order system. In order to guarantee the stability and convergence of the method, we derive a computable lower bound for the constant in numerical flux functions. We also establish a prior error estimation and give some theoretical analysis for the proposed method. Finally, a numerical experiment is presented to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper we present an efficient discretization method for the solution of the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations based on a high order (Hybrid) Discontinuous Galerkin formulation. The crucial component for the efficiency of the discretization method is the disctinction between stiff linear parts and less stiff non-linear parts with respect to their temporal and spatial treatment. Exploiting the flexibility of operator-splitting time integration schemes we combine two spatial discretizations which are tailored for two simpler sub-problems: a corresponding hyperbolic transport problem and an unsteady Stokes problem. For the hyperbolic transport problem a spatial discretization with an Upwind Discontinuous Galerkin method and an explicit treatment in the time integration scheme is rather natural and allows for an efficient implementation. The treatment of the Stokes part involves the solution of linear systems. In this case a discretization with Hybrid Discontinuous Galerkin methods is better suited. We consider such a discretization for the Stokes part with two important features: H(div)-conforming finite elements to garantuee exactly divergence-free velocity solutions and a projection operator which reduces the number of globally coupled unknowns. We present the method, discuss implementational aspects and demonstrate the performance on two and three dimensional benchmark problems.

Abstract:We present an innovative physics-informed numerical flux within the framework of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for solving elastic wave equations in 2-D heterogeneous media that include interfaces between elastic materials. The first-order velocity-stress equations are used, which can be written in the formulation of hyperbolic system and can be easily incorporated into the framework of DG method. Numerical flux is carefully proposed to maintain the physical laws on both sides of the interface where material parameters are discontinuous. We compare the newly suggested numerical flux with both the classic local Lax-Friedrichs flux and the exact upwind flux. The latter is derived from solving the Riemann problem and adheres to the Rankine-Hugoniot condition. In the comparison, we find that our flux is formally similar to the classic local Lax-Friedrichs flux, but the numerical behavior is different from it; its numerical performance is similar to the exact upwind flux. The biggest advantage of the numerical flux we propose is that it does not need to accurately solve the Riemann problem, but it can maintain the physical continuity conditions near the interface with material discontinuities. We present three numerical examples of elastic wave propagation in heterogeneous media, including horizontal and inclined interfaces, and the Marmousi model. The numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of this flux.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a hybrid method, which consists of a mixed-hybrid finite element method and a penalty discontinuous Galerkin method, for the approximation of a fractional flow formulation of a two-phase flow problem in heterogeneous media with discontinuous capillary pressure. The fractional flow formulation is comprised of a wetting phase pressure equation and a wetting phase saturation equation which are coupled through a total velocity and the saturation affected coefficients. For the wetting phase pressure equation, the continuous mixed-hybrid finite element method space can be utilized due to a fundamental property that the wetting phase pressure is continuous. While it can reduce the computational cost by using less degrees of freedom and avoiding the post-processing of velocity reconstruction, this method can also keep several good properties of the discontinuous Galerkin method, which are important to the fractional flow formulation, such as the local mass balance, continuous normal flux and capability of handling the discontinuous capillary pressure. For the wetting phase saturation equation, the penalty discontinuous Galerkin method is utilized due to its capability of handling the discontinuous jump of the wetting phase saturation. Furthermore, an adaptive algorithm for the hybrid method together with the centroidal Voronoi–Delaunay triangulation technique is proposed. Five numerical examples are presented to illustrate the features of proposed numerical method, such as the optimal convergence order, the accurate and efficient velocity approximation, and the applicability to the simulation of water flooding in oil field and the oil-trapping or barrier effect phenomena.
Finite element methods for a class of continuum models for immiscible flows with moving contact lines

Abstract:In this paper we present a finite element method (FEM) for two-phase incompressible flows with moving contact lines. We use a sharp interface Navier-Stokes model for the bulk phase fluid dynamics. Surface tension forces, including Marangoni forces and viscous interfacial effects, are modeled. For describing the moving contact we consider a class of continuum models which contains several special cases known from the literature. For the whole model, describing bulk fluid dynamics, surface tension forces and contact line forces, we derive a variational formulation and a corresponding energy estimate. For handling the evolving interface numerically the level-set technique is applied. The discontinuous pressure is accurately approximated by using a stabilized extended finite element space (XFEM). We apply a Nitsche technique to weakly impose the Navier slip conditions on the solid wall. A unified approach for discretization of the (different types of) surface tension forces and contact line forces is introduced. The numerical methods are first validated for relatively simple test problems, namely a stationary spherical droplet in contact with a flat wall and a spherical droplet on a flat wall that spreads or contracts to a stationary form. A further validation is done for a two-phase Couette flow with contact lines. To illustrate the robustness of our FEM we also present results of simulations for a problem with a curved contact wall and for a problem with more complicated contact line dynamics.

Abstract:To simulate flow problems with moving fluid-solid interfaces, a boundary treatment technique based on a hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method is presented. In the vicinity of the immersed boundary, a forcing term is added into the governing flow equations to modify the discretization scheme for the viscous term during its spatial discretization. Addition of such a term enforces desired boundary condition on the immersed boundary. A one-dimensional linear interpolation scheme is used to obtained required information for the modified discretization scheme when dealing with a moving boundary. The present method is essentially second-order accurate and can obtain results that are in good agreement with benchmark references when simulating the flow induced by the in-line oscillation of a circular cylinder.

Abstract:We introduce a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations for which the approximate velocity field is pointwise divergence-free. The method builds on the method presented by Labeur and Wells [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., vol. 34 (2012), pp. A889--A913]. We show that with modifications of the function spaces in the method of Labeur and Wells it is possible to formulate a simple method with pointwise divergence-free velocity fields which is momentum conserving, energy stable, and pressure-robust. Theoretical results are supported by two- and three-dimensional numerical examples and for different orders of polynomial approximation.

An Eulerian Meshless Method for Two-phase Flows with Embedded Geometries

Abstract:We present a novel Eulerian meshless method for two-phase flows with arbitrary embedded geometries. The spatial derivatives are computed using the meshless generalized finite difference method (GFDM). The sharp phase interface is tracked using a volume fraction function. The volume fraction is advected using a method based on the minimisation of a directional flux-based error. For stability, the advection terms are discretised using upwinding schemes. In the vicinity of the embedded geometries, the signed distance function is used to populate the surface of the geometries to generate a body-conforming point cloud. Consequently, the points on the boundaries participate directly in the discretisation, unlike conventional immersed-boundary methods where they are either used to calculate momentum deficit (for example, continuous forcing) or conservation losses (for example, cut-cell methods). The boundary conditions are, therefore, directly imposed at these points on the embedded geometries, opening up the possibility for a discretisation that is body-conforming and spatially varying in resolution, while retaining the consistency of the scheme. We present benchmark test cases that validate the method for two-phase flows, flows with embedded boundaries and a combination of both.

Abstract:In this paper, we will develop a new staggered hybridization technique for discontinuous Galerkin methods to discretize linear elastodynamic equations. The idea of hybridization is used extensively in many discontinuous Galerkin methods, but the idea of staggered hybridization is new. Our new approach offers several advantages, namely energy conservation, high-order optimal convergence, preservation of symmetry for the stress tensor, block diagonal mass matrices as well as low dispersion error. The key idea is to use two staggered hybrid variables to enforce the continuity of the velocity and the continuity of the normal component of the stress tensor on a staggered mesh. We prove the stability and the convergence of the proposed scheme in both the semi-discrete and the fully-discrete settings. Numerical results confirm the optimal rate of convergence and show that the method has a superconvergent property for dispersion. Furthermore, an application of this method to Rayleigh wave propagation is presented.

Abstract:In the spirit of making high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods more competitive, researchers have developed the hybridized DG methods, a class of discontinuous Galerkin methods that generalizes the Hybridizable DG (HDG), the Embedded DG (EDG) and the Interior Embedded DG (IEDG) methods. These methods are amenable to hybridization (static condensation) and thus to more computationally efficient implementations. Like other high-order DG methods, however, they may suffer from numerical stability issues in under-resolved fluid flow simulations. In this spirit, we introduce the hybridized DG methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in entropy variables. Under a suitable choice of the stabilization matrix, the scheme can be shown to be entropy stable and satisfy the Second Law of Thermodynamics in an integral sense. The performance and robustness of the proposed family of schemes are illustrated through a series of steady and unsteady flow problems in subsonic, transonic, and supersonic regimes. The hybridized DG methods in entropy variables show the optimal accuracy order given by the polynomial approximation space, and are significantly superior to their counterparts in conservation variables in terms of stability and robustness, particularly for under-resolved and shock flows.

The Moving Discontinuous Galerkin Method with Interface Condition Enforcement for the Simulation of Hypersonic, Viscous Flows

Abstract:The moving discontinuous Galerkin method with interface condition enforcement (MDG-ICE) is a high-order, r-adaptive method that treats the grid as a variable and weakly enforces the conservation law, constitutive law, and corresponding interface conditions in order to implicitly fit high-gradient flow features. In this paper, we develop an optimization solver based on the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm that features an anisotropic, locally adaptive penalty method to enhance robustness and prevent cell degeneration in the computation of hypersonic, viscous flows. Specifically, we incorporate an anisotropic grid regularization based on the mesh-implied metric that inhibits grid motion in directions with small element length scales, an element shape regularization that inhibits nonlinear deformations of the high-order elements, and a penalty regularization that penalizes degenerate elements. Additionally, we introduce a procedure for locally scaling the regularization operators in an adaptive, elementwise manner in order to maintain grid validity. We apply the proposed MDG-ICE formulation to two- and three-dimensional test cases involving viscous shocks and/or boundary layers, including Mach 17.6 hypersonic viscous flow over a circular cylinder and Mach 5 hypersonic viscous flow over a sphere, which are very challenging test cases for conventional numerical schemes on simplicial grids. Even without artificial dissipation, the computed solutions are free from spurious oscillations and yield highly symmetric surface heat-flux profiles.

An exactly mass conserving space-time embedded-hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the Navier-Stokes equations on moving domains

Abstract:This paper presents a space-time embedded-hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (EHDG) method for the Navier--Stokes equations on moving domains. This method uses a different hybridization compared to the space-time hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method we presented previously in (Int. J. Numer. Meth. Fluids 89: 519--532, 2019). In the space-time EHDG method the velocity trace unknown is continuous while the pressure trace unknown is discontinuous across facets. In the space-time HDG method, all trace unknowns are discontinuous across facets. Alternatively, we present also a space-time embedded discontinuous Galerkin (EDG) method in which all trace unknowns are continuous across facets. The advantage of continuous trace unknowns is that the formulation has fewer global degrees-of-freedom for a given mesh than when using discontinuous trace unknowns. Nevertheless, the discrete velocity field obtained by the space-time EHDG and EDG methods, like the space-time HDG method, is exactly divergence-free, even on moving domains. However, only the space-time EHDG and HDG methods result in divergence-conforming velocity fields. An immediate consequence of this is that the space-time EHDG and HDG discretizations of the conservative form of the Navier--Stokes equations are energy stable. The space-time EDG method, on the other hand, requires a skew-symmetric formulation of the momentum advection term to be energy-stable. Numerical examples will demonstrate the differences in solution obtained by the space-time EHDG, EDG, and HDG methods.

Abstract:Hydrogels are crosslinked polymer networks swollen with an aqueous solvent, and play central roles in biomicrofluidic devices. In such applications, the gel is often in contact with a flowing fluid, thus setting up a fluid-hydrogel two-phase system. Using a recently proposed model (Young et al. [41] 2019), we treat the hydrogel as a poroelastic material consisting of a Saint Venant-Kirchhoff polymer network and a Newtonian viscous solvent, and develop a finite-element method for computing flows involving a fluid-hydrogel interface. The interface is tracked by using a fixed-mesh arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method that maps the interface to a reference configuration. The interfacial deformation is coupled with the fluid and solid governing equations into a monolithic algorithm using the finite-element library deal.II. The code is validated against available analytical solutions in several non-trivial flow problems: one-dimensional compression of a gel layer by a uniform flow, two-layer shear flow, and the deformation of a Darcy gel particle in a planar extensional flow. In all cases, the numerical solutions are in excellent agreement with the analytical solutions. Numerical tests show second-order convergence with respect to mesh refinement, and first-order convergence with respect to time-step refinement.
