Abstract:The present paper investigates the projective bundles over small covers. We first give a necessary and sufficient condition for the projectivization of a real vector bundle over a small cover to be a small cover. Then associated with moment-angle manifolds, we further study the structure of such a projectivization as a small cover by introducing a new characteristic function on simple convex polytopes. As an application, we characterize the real projective bundles over 2-dimensional small covers by interpreting the fiber sum operation to some combinatorial operation. We next determine when the projectivization of Whitney sum of the tautological line bundle and the tangent bundle over real projective space is diffeomorphic to the product of two real projective spaces. This answers an open question regarding the topology of the fiber of the Monster-Semple tower.

Abstract:We study the structure of self-homeomorphism groups of fibered manifolds. A fibered topological space is a Birman–Hilden space whenever in each isotopic pair of its fiber-preserving (taking each fiber to a fiber) self-homeomorphisms the homeomorphisms are also fiber-isotopic (isotopic through fiber-preserving homeomorphisms). We prove in particular that the Birman–Hilden class contains all compact connected locally trivial surface bundles over the circle, including nonorientable ones and those with nonempty boundary, as well as all closed orientable Haken 3-manifold bundles over the circle, including nonorientable ones.

Abstract:We prove that all smooth sphere bundles that admit fiberwise 1/4-pinched metrics are induced bundles of vector bundles, so their structure groups reduce from the diffeomorphism group of the sphere to the orthogonal group. This result implies the existence of many smooth n-sphere bundles over a k-sphere that do not support strictly 1/4-pinched positively curved Riemannian metrics on their fibers.

Abstract:We consider an isomorphism between the idempotent convexity based on the maximum and the addition operations and the idempotent measure convexity on the maximum and the multiplication operations. We use this isomorphism to investigate topological properties of the barycenter map related to the maximum and the multiplication operations.

Abstract:This work explores the geometry of the Hilbert space bundle of a quantum system, focusing on properties related to the parameter-induced dimension. Instead of relying on hints from the Hamiltonian eigenvalues, the behavior of the fiber metric and the evolution of quantum states are analyzed directly. The results reveal that the Hilbert space bundle around an exceptional point is non-orientable. Beyond demonstrating a direct method for determining the geometry of the Hilbert space bundle, this study also offers a potential framework for constructing qubits.

Abstract:We prove that the Teichmüller space $\mathcal {T}^{<0}(M)$ of negatively curved metrics on a hyperbolic manifold M has nontrivial i-th rational homotopy groups for some $i> \dim M$. Moreover, some elements of infinite order in $\pi _i B\text{ Diff }(M)$ can be represented by bundles over $S^i$ with fiberwise negatively curved metrics.

Abstract:We prove a number of results to the general effect that, under obviously necessary numerical and determinant constraints, "most" morphisms between fixed bundles on a complex elliptic curve produce (co)kernels which can either be specified beforehand or else meet various rigidity constraints. Examples include: (a) for indecomposable $\mathcal{E}$ and $\mathcal{E'}$ with slopes and ranks increasing strictly in that order the space of monomorphisms whose cokernel is semistable and maximally rigid (i.e. has minimal-dimensional automorphism group) is open dense; (b) for indecomposable $\mathcal{K}$, $\mathcal{E}$ and stable $\mathcal{F}$ with slopes increasing strictly in that order and ranks and determinants satisfying the obvious additivity constraints the space of embeddings $\mathcal{K}\to \mathcal{E}$ whose cokernel is isomorphic to $\mathcal{F}$ is open dense; (c) the obvious mirror images of these results; (d) generalizations weakening indecomposability to semistability + maximal rigidity; (e) various examples illustrating the necessity of the assorted assumptions.

A non-trivial family of trivial bundles with complex hyperbolic structure

Abstract:In $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$, the group of holomorphic isometries of the complex hyperbolic plane, we study the space of involutions $R_1, R_2, R_3, R_4, R_5$ satisfying $R_5R_4R_3R_2R_1=1$, where $R_1$ is a reflection in a complex geodesic and the other $R_i$'s are reflections in points of the complex hyperbolic plane. We show that this space modulo $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$-conjugation is bending-connected and has dimension $4$. Using this, we construct a $4$-dimensional bending-connected family of complex hyperbolic structures on a disc orbibundle with vanishing Euler number over the sphere with $5$ cone points of angle $\pi$. Bending-connectedness here means that we can naturally deform the geometric structure, like Dehn twists in Teichmüller theory. Additionally, finding complex hyperbolic disc orbibundles with vanishing Euler number is a hard problem, originally conjectured by W. Goldman and Y. Eliashberg and solved by S. Anan'in and N. Gusevskii, and we produce a simpler and more straightforward construction for them.

Abstract:We use classical results in smoothing theory to extract information about the rational homotopy groups of the space of Riemannian metrics without conjugate points on a high-dimensional manifold with hyperbolic fundamental group. As a consequence, we show that spaces of negatively curved Riemannian metrics have in general nontrivial rational homotopy groups. We also show that smooth M-bundles over spheres equipped with fiberwise negatively curved metrics represent elements of finite order in the homotopy groups pi iBDiff(M) of the classifying space for smooth M-bundles, provided iMUCH LESS-THANdimM.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to rigidity of smooth bundles which are equipped with fiberwise geometric or dynamical structure. We show that the fiberwise associated sphere bundle to a bundle whose leaves are equipped with (continuously varying) metrics of negative curvature is a topologically trivial bundle when either the base space is simply connected or, more generally, when the bundle is fiber homotopically trivial. We present two very different proofs of this result: a geometric proof and a dynamical proof. We also establish a number of rigidity results for bundles which are equipped with fiberwise Anosov dynamical systems. Finally, we present several examples which show that our results are sharp in certain ways or illustrate necessity of various assumptions.
Cohomologies of tautological bundles of matroids

Abstract:Tautological bundles of realizations of matroids were introduced in [BEST23] as a unifying geometric model for studying matroids. We compute the cohomologies of exterior and symmetric powers of these vector bundles, and show that they depend only on the matroid of the realization. As an application, we show that the log canonical bundle of a wonderful compactification of a hyperplane arrangement complement, in particular the moduli space of pointed rational curves, has vanishing higher cohomologies.

Abstract:We prove that (a) the sections space of a continuous unital subhomogeneous $C^*$ bundle over compact metrizable $X$ admits a finite-index expectation onto $C(X)$, answering a question of Blanchard-Gogić (in the metrizable case); (b) such expectations cannot, generally, have ``optimal index'', answering negatively a variant of the same question; and (c) a homogeneous continuous Banach bundle over a locally paracompact base space $X$ can be renormed into a Hilbert bundle in such a manner that the original space of bounded sections is $C_b(X)$-linearly Banach-Mazur-close to the resulting Hilbert module over the algebra $C_b(X)$ of continuous bounded functions on $X$. This last result resolves quantitatively another problem posed by Gogić.

Abstract:In this paper we study boundedness of bundle diffeomorphism groups over a circle. For a fiber bundle $\pi : M \to S^1$ with fiber $N$ and structure group $\Gamma$ and $r \in {\Bbb Z}_{\geq 0} \cup \{ \infty \}$ we distinguish an integer $k = k(\pi, r) \in {\Bbb Z}_{\geq 0}$ and construct a function $\widehat{\nu} : {\rm Diff}_\pi(M)_0 \to {\Bbb R}_k$. When $k \geq 1$, it is shown that the bundle diffeomorphism group ${\rm Diff}_\pi(M)_0$ is uniformly perfect and $clb_\pi\,{\rm Diff}^r_\pi(M)_0 \leq k+3$, if ${\rm Diff}_{\rho, c}(E)_0$ is perfect for the trivial fiber bundle $\rho : E \to {\Bbb R}$ with fiber $N$ and structure group $\Gamma$. On the other hand, when $k = 0$, it is shown that $\widehat{\nu}$ is a unbounded quasimorphism, so that ${\rm Diff}_\pi(M)_0$ is unbounded and not uniformly perfect. We also describe the integer $k$ in term of the attaching map $\phi$ for a mapping torus $\pi : M_\phi \to S^1$ and give some explicit examples of (un)bounded groups.

Principal bundle structure of the space of metric measure spaces

Abstract:We study the topological structure of the space $\mathcal{X}$ of isomorphism classes of metric measure spaces equipped with the box or concentration topologies. We consider the scale-change action of the multiplicative group $\mathbb{R}_+$ of positive real numbers on $\mathcal{X}$, which has a one-point metric measure space, say $*$, as only one fixed-point. We prove that the $\mathbb{R}_+$-action on $\mathcal{X}_* := \mathcal{X} \setminus \{*\}$ admits the structure of nontrivial and locally trivial principal $\mathbb{R}_+$-bundle over the quotient space. Our bundle $\mathbb{R}_+ \to \mathcal{X}_* \to \mathcal{X}_*/\mathbb{R}_+$ is a curious example of a nontrivial principal fiber bundle with contractible fiber. A similar statement is obtained for the pyramidal compactification of $\mathcal{X}$, where we completely determine the structure of the fixed-point set of the $\mathbb{R}_+$-action on the compactification.

Abstract:We prove that subhomogeneous continuous Banach bundles over compact metrizable spaces are equivalent to Hilbert bundles, while examples show that the metrizability assumption cannot be dropped completely. This complements the parallel statement for homogeneous bundles without the metrizability assumption, and generalizes the analogous result to the effect that subhomogeneous $C^*$ bundles over compact metrizable spaces admit finite-index expectations.

Discrete Vector Bundles with Connection and the Bianchi Identity

Abstract:We develop a combinatorial theory of vector bundles with connection that is natural with respect to appropriate mappings of the base space. The base space is a simplicial complex, the main objects defined are discrete vector bundle valued cochains and the main operators we develop are a discrete exterior covariant derivative and a combinatorial wedge product. Key properties of these operators are demonstrated and it is shown that they are natural with respect to the mappings referred to above. We also formulate a well-behaved definition of metric compatible discrete connections. A characterization is given for when a discrete vector bundle with connection is trivializable or has a trivial lower rank subbundle. This machinery is used to define discrete curvature as linear maps and we show that our formulation satisfies a discrete Bianchi identity. Recently an alternative framework for discrete vector bundles with connection has been given by Christiansen and Hu. We show that our framework reproduces and extends theirs when we apply our constructions on a subdivision of the base simplicial complex.

Abstract:Twisted ind-Grassmannians are ind-varieties $\GG$ obtained as direct limits of Grassmannians $G(r_m,V^{r_m})$, for $m\in\ZZ_{>0}$, under embeddings $\phi_m:G(r_m,V^{r_m})\to G(r_{m+1}, V^{r_{m+1}})$ of degree greater than one. It has been conjectured in \cite{PT} and \cite{DP} that any vector bundle of finite rank on a twisted ind-Grassmannian is trivial. We prove this conjecture under the assumption that the ind-Grassmannian $\GG$ is sufficiently twisted, i.e. that $\lim_{m\to\infty}\frac{r_m}{°\phi_1...°\phi_m}=0$.

Abstract:We show that a continuously-normed Banach bundle $\mathcal{E}$ over a compact Hausdorff space $X$ whose space of sections is algebraically finitely-generated (f.g.) over $C(X)$ is locally trivial (and hence the section space is projective f.g over $C(X)$); this answers a question of I. Gogić. As a preliminary we also provide sufficient conditions for a quotient bundle to be continuous phrased in terms of the Vietoris continuity of the unit-ball maps attached to the bundles. Related results include (a) the fact that the category of topologically f.g. continuous Banach bundles over $X$ is symmetric monoidal under the (fiber-wise-maximal) tensor product, (b) the full faithfulness of the global-section functor from topologically f.g. continuous bundles to $C(X)$-modules and (c) the consequent identification of the algebraically f.g. bundles as precisely the rigid objects in the aforementioned symmetric monoidal category.
