Abstract:Approximating convex bodies succinctly by convex polytopes is a fundamental problem in discrete geometry. A convex body $K$ of diameter $\mathrm{diam}(K)$ is given in Euclidean $d$-dimensional space, where $d$ is a constant. Given an error parameter $\varepsilon > 0$, the objective is to determine a polytope of minimum combinatorial complexity whose Hausdorff distance from $K$ is at most $\varepsilon \cdot \mathrm{diam}(K)$. By combinatorial complexity we mean the total number of faces of all dimensions of the polytope. A well-known result by Dudley implies that $O(1/\varepsilon^{(d-1)/2})$ facets suffice, and a dual result by Bronshteyn and Ivanov similarly bounds the number of vertices, but neither result bounds the total combinatorial complexity. We show that there exists an approximating polytope whose total combinatorial complexity is $\tilde{O}(1/\varepsilon^{(d-1)/2})$, where $\tilde{O}$ conceals a polylogarithmic factor in $1/\varepsilon$. This is a significant improvement upon the best known bound, which is roughly $O(1/\varepsilon^{d-2})$. Our result is based on a novel combination of both old and new ideas. First, we employ Macbeath regions, a classical structure from the theory of convexity. The construction of our approximating polytope employs a new stratified placement of these regions. Second, in order to analyze the combinatorial complexity of the approximating polytope, we present a tight analysis of a width-based variant of Bárány and Larman's economical cap covering. Finally, we use a deterministic adaptation of the witness-collector technique (developed recently by Devillers et al.) in the context of our stratified construction.

Optimal Bound on the Combinatorial Complexity of Approximating Polytopes

Abstract:This paper considers the question of how to succinctly approximate a multidimensional convex body by a polytope. Given a convex body $K$ of unit diameter in Euclidean $d$-dimensional space (where $d$ is a constant) and an error parameter $\varepsilon > 0$, the objective is to determine a convex polytope of low combinatorial complexity whose Hausdorff distance from $K$ is at most $\varepsilon$. By combinatorial complexity we mean the total number of faces of all dimensions. Classical constructions by Dudley and Bronshteyn/Ivanov show that $O(1/\varepsilon^{(d-1)/2})$ facets or vertices are possible, respectively, but neither achieves both bounds simultaneously. In this paper, we show that it is possible to construct a polytope with $O(1/\varepsilon^{(d-1)/2})$ combinatorial complexity, which is optimal in the worst case. Our result is based on a new relationship between $\varepsilon$-width caps of a convex body and its polar body. Using this relationship, we are able to obtain a volume-sensitive bound on the number of approximating caps that are "essentially different." We achieve our main result by combining this with a variant of the witness-collector method and a novel variable-thickness layered construction of the economical cap covering.

Reducing the Large Set Threshold for the Basu-Oertel Conjecture

Abstract:In 1960, Grünbaum proved that for any convex body $C\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ and every halfspace $H$ containing the centroid of $C$, one has that the volume of $H\cap C$ is at least a $\frac{1}{e}$-fraction of the volume of $C$. Recently, in 2017, Basu and Oertel conjectured that a similar result holds for mixed-integer convex sets. Concretely, they proposed that for any convex body $C\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+d}$, there should exist a point $\mathbf{x} \in S=C\cap(\mathbb{Z}^{n}\times\mathbb{R}^d)$ such that for every halfspace $H$ containing $\mathbf{x}$, one has that \[ \mathcal{H}_d(H\cap S) \geq \frac{1}{2^n}\frac{1}{e}\mathcal{H}_d(S), \] where $\mathcal{H}^d$ denotes the $d$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. While the conjecture remains open, Basu and Oertel proved that the above inequality holds true for sufficiently large sets, in terms of a measure known as the \emph{lattice width} of a set. In this work, by following a geometric approach, we improve this result by substantially reducing the threshold at which a set can be considered large. We reduce this threshold from an exponential to a polynomial dependency on the dimension, therefore significantly enlarging the family of mixed-integer convex sets over which the Basu-Oertel conjecture holds true.

The sharp doubling threshold for approximate convexity

Abstract:We show for $A,B\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ of equal volume and $t\in (0,1/2]$ that if $|tA+(1-t)B|< (1+t^d)|A|$, then (up to translation) $|\text{co}(A\cup B)|/|A|$ is bounded. This establishes the sharp threshold for Figalli and Jerison's quantative stability of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality. We additionally establish a similar sharp threshold for iterated sumsets.

Abstract:We show that any $n\times m$ matrix $A$ can be approximated in operator norm by a submatrix with a number of columns of order the stable rank of $A$. This improves on existing results by removing an extra logarithmic factor in the size of the extracted matrix. Our proof uses the recent solution of the Kadison-Singer problem. We also develop a sort of tensorization technique to deal with constraint approximation problems. As an application, we provide a sparsification result with equal weights and an optimal approximate John's decomposition for non-symmetric convex bodies. This enables us to show that any convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is arbitrary close to another one having $O(n)$ contact points and fills the gap left in the literature after the results of Rudelson and Srivastava by completely answering the problem. As a consequence, we also show that the method developed by Gu\'edon, Gordon and Meyer to establish the isomorphic Dvoretzky theorem yields to the best known result once we inject our improvements.

Abstract:Traditional problems in computational geometry involve aspects that are both discrete and continuous. One such example is nearest-neighbor searching, where the input is discrete, but the result depends on distances, which vary continuously. In many real-world applications of geometric data structures, it is assumed that query results are continuous, free of jump discontinuities. This is at odds with many modern data structures in computational geometry, which employ approximations to achieve efficiency, but these approximations often suffer from discontinuities. In this paper, we present a general method for transforming an approximate but discontinuous data structure into one that produces a smooth approximation, while matching the asymptotic space efficiencies of the original. We achieve this by adapting an approach called the partition-of-unity method, which smoothly blends multiple local approximations into a single smooth global approximation. We illustrate the use of this technique in a specific application of approximating the distance to the boundary of a convex polytope in $\mathbb{R}^d$ from any point in its interior. We begin by developing a novel data structure that efficiently computes an absolute $\varepsilon$-approximation to this query in time $O(\log (1/\varepsilon))$ using $O(1/\varepsilon^{d/2})$ storage space. Then, we proceed to apply the proposed partition-of-unity blending to guarantee the smoothness of the approximate distance field, establishing optimal asymptotic bounds on the norms of its gradient and Hessian.

Abstract:Given two nonempty and disjoint intersections of closed and convex subsets, we look for a best approximation pair relative to them, i.e., a pair of points, one in each intersection, attaining the minimum distance between the disjoint intersections. We propose an iterative process based on projections onto the subsets which generate the intersections. The process is inspired by the Halpern-Lions-Wittmann-Bauschke algorithm and the classical alternating process of Cheney and Goldstein, and its advantage is that there is no need to project onto the intersections themselves, a task which can be rather demanding. We prove that under certain conditions the two interlaced subsequences converge to a best approximation pair. These conditions hold, in particular, when the space is Euclidean and the subsets which generate the intersections are compact and strictly convex. Our result extends the one of Aharoni, Censor and Jiang ["Finding a best approximation pair of points for two polyhedra'', Computational Optimization and Applications 71 (2018), 509--523] who considered the case of finite-dimensional polyhedra.

Abstract:To find a convex hull for n points in d-dimensional space, the optimal algorithm has time complexity O(n(right) (perpendicular d/2 left perpendicular)). When n and d are large, the execution time is very long. In this paper, we propose an approximate algorithm for computing multidimensional convex hulls. This algorithm finds quasi-two-side approximation to the hull to reduce the time for computing the exact hull boundary. To yield an epsilon-approximate convex hull, it has time complexity O(epsilon(-1/(d-1))n) and storage complexity O(epsilon(-1(d-1))). The approximate algorithm has several advantages: (1) it can easily be implemented, (2) it is suitable for parallel implementation, (3) it is much faster than the exact algorithm, (4) the user can choose to get more accurate results using longer computation time, and (5) it can be applied to solve many problems related to convex hull computation. Hadwiger's problem for bodies with enough sub-Gaussian marginals

Abstract:Hadwiger's conjecture in convex geometry, formulated in 1957, states that every convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be covered by $2^n$ translations of its interior. Despite significant efforts, the best known bound related to this problem was $\mathcal{O}(4^n \sqrt{n} \log n)$ for more than sixty years. In 2021, Huang, Slomka, Tkocz, and Vritsiou made a major breakthrough by improving the estimate by a factor of $\exp\left(\Omega(\sqrt{n})\right)$. Further, for $\psi_2$ bodies they proved that at most $\exp(-\Omega(n))\cdot4^n$ translations of its interior are needed to cover it. Through a probabilistic approach we show that the bound $\exp(-\Omega(n))\cdot4^n$ can be obtained for convex bodies with sufficiently many well-behaved sub-gaussian marginals. Using a small diameter approximation, we present how the currently best known bound for the general case, due to Campos, Van Hintum, Morris, and Tiba can also be deduced from our results.

Approximating the Maximum Independent Set of Convex Polygons with a Bounded Number of Directions

Abstract:In the maximum independent set of convex polygons problem, we are given a set of $n$ convex polygons in the plane with the objective of selecting a maximum cardinality subset of non-overlapping polygons. Here we study a special case of the problem where the edges of the polygons can take at most $d$ fixed directions. We present an $8d/3$-approximation algorithm for this problem running in time $O((nd)^{O(d4^d)})$. The previous-best polynomial-time approximation (for constant $d$) was a classical $n^\varepsilon$ approximation by Fox and Pach [SODA'11] that has recently been improved to a $OPT^{\varepsilon}$-approximation algorithm by Cslovjecsek, Pilipczuk and W\k{e}grzycki [SODA '24], which also extends to an arbitrary set of convex polygons. Our result builds on, and generalizes the recent constant factor approximation algorithms for the maximum independent set of axis-parallel rectangles problem (which is a special case of our problem with $d=2$) by Mitchell [FOCS'21] and G\'{a}lvez, Khan, Mari, M\"{o}mke, Reddy, and Wiese [SODA'22].

Optimal Private Halfspace Counting via Discrepancy

Abstract:A range counting problem is specified by a set $P$ of size $|P| = n$ of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$, an integer weight $x_p$ associated to each point $p \in P$, and a range space ${\cal R} \subseteq 2^{P}$. Given a query range $R \in {\cal R}$, the target output is $R(\vec{x}) = \sum_{p \in R}{x_p}$. Range counting for different range spaces is a central problem in Computational Geometry. We study $(\epsilon, \delta)$-differentially private algorithms for range counting. Our main results are for the range space given by hyperplanes, that is, the halfspace counting problem. We present an $(\epsilon, \delta)$-differentially private algorithm for halfspace counting in $d$ dimensions which achieves $O(n^{1-1/d})$ average squared error. This contrasts with the $\Omega(n)$ lower bound established by the classical result of Dinur and Nissim [PODS 2003] for arbitrary subset counting queries. We also show a matching lower bound on average squared error for any $(\epsilon, \delta)$-differentially private algorithm for halfspace counting. Both bounds are obtained using discrepancy theory. For the lower bound, we use a modified discrepancy measure and bound approximation of $(\epsilon, \delta)$-differentially private algorithms for range counting queries in terms of this discrepancy. We also relate the modified discrepancy measure to classical combinatorial discrepancy, which allows us to exploit known discrepancy lower bounds. This approach also yields a lower bound of $\Omega((\log n)^{d-1})$ for $(\epsilon, \delta)$-differentially private orthogonal range counting in $d$ dimensions, the first known superconstant lower bound for this problem. For the upper bound, we use an approach inspired by partial coloring methods for proving discrepancy upper bounds, and obtain $(\epsilon, \delta)$-differentially private algorithms for range counting with polynomially bounded shatter function range spaces.

Membership Queries for Convex Floating Bodies via Hilbert Geometry

Abstract:We propose the convex floating body membership problem, which consists of efficiently determining when a query point $a\in\mathbb{R}^d$ belongs to the so-called $\varepsilon$-convex floating body of a given bounded convex domain $K\subset\mathbb{R}^d$. We consider this problem in an approximate setting, i.e., given a parameter $\delta>0$, the query can be answered either way if the Hilbert distance in $K$ of $a$ from the boundary of a relatively-scaled $\varepsilon$-convex floating body is less than $\delta$. We present a data structure for this problem that has storage size $O(\delta^{-d}\varepsilon^{-(d-1)/2})$ and achieves query time of $O({\delta^{-1}}\ln 1/\varepsilon)$. Our construction is motivated by a recent work of Abdelkader and Mount on APM queries, and relies on a comparison of convex floating bodies with balls in the Hilbert metric on $K$.

Abstract:It was shown in [11] that for every origin-symmetric star body $K \subseteq \mathbb R^n$ of volume $1$, every even continuous probability density $f$ on $K$ and $1 \leq k \leq n-1$, there exists a subspace $F \subseteq \mathbb R^n$ of codimension $k$ such that \[ \int_{K \cap F} f \geq c^k (d_{\rm ovr}(K, \mathcal{BP}_k^n))^{-k} \] where $d_{\rm ovr}(K, \mathcal{BP}_k^n)$ is the outer volume ratio distance from $K$ to the class of generalized $k$-intersection bodies, and $c>0$ is a universal constant. The upper bound $d_{\rm ovr}(K, \mathcal{BP}_k^n) \leq c' \sqrt{n/k} \left(\log\left(\frac{en}k\right)\right)^{3/2}$ was established in [13] for every origin-symmetric convex body $K$. In this note we show that there exist an origin-symmetric convex body $K$ of volume $1$ and an even continuous probability density $f$ supported on $K$ such that for every subspace $F$ of codimension $k$, \[ \int_{K \cap F} f \leq \left( c \sqrt{\frac n{k \log(n)} } \right)^{-k}. \] As a consequence we obtain a lower bound for $d_{\rm ovr}(K, \mathcal{BP}_k^n)$ with $K$ a convex body, complementing the upper bound in \cite{koldobsky2011isomorphic}. This is \[c \sqrt{n/k} (\log(n))^{-1/2} \leq \sup_K d_{\rm ovr}(K, \mathcal{BP}_k^n) \leq c' \sqrt{n/k} \left(\log\left(\frac{en}k\right)\right)^{3/2}.\] The case $k=1$ was obtained previously in [5,6].

Random approximation of convex bodies in Hausdorff metric

Abstract:While there is extensive literature on approximation, deterministic as well as random, of general convex bodies $K$ in the symmetric difference metric, or other metrics arising from intrinsic volumes, very little is known for corresponding random results in the Hausdorff distance when the approximant $K_n$ is given by the convex hull of $n$ independent random points chosen uniformly on the boundary or in the interior of $K$. When $K$ is a polygon and the points are chosen on its boundary, we determine the exact limiting behavior of the expected Hausdorff distance between a polygon as $n\to\infty$. From this we derive the behavior of the asymptotic constant for a regular polygon in the number of vertices.

Abstract:We prove the following sparse approximation result for polytopes. Assume that $Q$ is a polytope in John's position. Then there exist at most $2d$ vertices of $Q$ whose convex hull $Q'$ satisfies $Q \subseteq - 2d^2 \, Q'$. As a consequence, we retrieve the best bound for the quantitative Helly-type result for the volume, achieved by Brazitikos, and improve on the strongest bound for the quantitative Helly-type theorem for the diameter, shown by Ivanov and Naszódi: We prove that given a finite family $\mathcal{F}$ of convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with intersection $K$, we may select at most $2 d$ members of $\mathcal{F}$ such that their intersection has volume at most $(c d)^{3d /2} \,\mathrm{vol}\, K$, and it has diameter at most $2 d^2 \,\mathrm{diam} \,K$, for some absolute constant $c>0$.

Abstract:Let $K$ be an $n$-dimensional symmetric convex body with $n \ge 4$ and let $K\dual$ be its polar body. We present an elementary proof of the fact that $$(\Vol K)(\Vol K\dual)\ge \frac{b_n^2}{(\log_2 n)^n},$$ where $b_n$ is the volume of the Euclidean ball of radius 1. The inequality is asymptotically weaker than the estimate of Bourgain and Milman, which replaces the $\log_2 n$ by a constant. However, there is no known elementary proof of the Bourgain-Milman theorem.

The Dyn-Farkhi conjecture and the convex hull of a sumset in two dimensions

Abstract:For a compact set $A$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ the Hausdorff distance from $A$ to $\text{conv}(A)$ is defined by \begin{equation*} d(A):=\sup_{a\in\text{conv}(A)}\inf_{x\in A}|x-a|, \end{equation*} where for $x=(x_1,\dots,x_n)\in\mathbb{R}^n$ we use the notation $|x|=\sqrt{x_1^2+\dots+x_n^2}$. It was conjectured in 2004 by Dyn and Farkhi that $d^2$ is subadditive on compact sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In 2018 this conjecture was proved false by Fradelizi et al. when $n\geq3$. The conjecture can also be verified when $n=1$. In this paper we prove the conjecture when $n=2$ and in doing so we prove an interesting representation of the sumset $\text{conv}(A)+\text{conv}(B)$ for full dimensional compact sets $A,B$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$.

Applications of equidistant supporting surfaces of a convex body in the hyperbolic space

Abstract:For a hyperplane $H$ supporting a convex body $C$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^d$ we define the width of $C$ determined by $H$ as the distance between $H$ and a most distant ultraparallel hyperplane supporting $C$. The thickness (i.e., the minimum width) of $C$ is denoted by $\Delta(C)$. A convex body $R \subset \mathbb{H}^d$ is called reduced if for every body $Z \subsetneq R$ we have $\Delta(Z) < \Delta(R)$. We show that for any extreme point $e$ of a reduced body $R \subset \mathbb{H}^d$ there exists a supporting hyperplane $H$ of $R$ which passes through $e$ or its equidistant surface supporting $R$ passes through $e$. Bodies of constant width in $\mathbb{H}^d$ are defined as bodies whose all widths are equal. We prove that every complete body in $\mathbb{H}^d$ is a body of constant width.
