Abstract:In these notes, we explore possible stable properties for the zeta function of a geometric Zp-tower of curves over a finite field of characteristic p, in the spirit of Iwasawa theory. A number of fundamental questions and conjectures are proposed for those Zp towers coming from algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Curves over finite fields are of great importance in cryptography and coding theory. Through studying their zeta-functions, we would be able to find out vital arithmetic and geometric information about them and their Jacobians, including the number of rational points on this kind of curves. In this paper, I investigate if it is possible to construct a curve over finite fields of a given genus $g$ whose zeta-function is given as a product of zeta-functions of $g$ elliptic curves, and find out alternative methods if it is not possible. Basically, I look for conditions which those $g$ elliptic curves should satisfy such that their product (of their Jacobians) is isogenous to the Jacobian of a curve of a given genus $g$. Then from this isogenous relationship I can determine the characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius endomorphism of the Jacobian of the new curve and by this characteristic polynomial I can thus determine the zeta-function of this new curve. By using the zeta-functions of curves in the form as generating functions, the number of rational points on curves can even be found out, which may lead to further researches relating to some applications in cryptography, coding theory and even information theory.

Abstract:We initiate the study of Iwasawa theory for branched $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-towers of finite connected graphs. These towers are more general than what have been studied so far, since the morphisms of graphs involved are branched covers, a particular kind of harmonic morphisms of graphs. We prove an analogue of Iwasawa's asymptotic class number formula for the $p$-part of the number of spanning trees in this setting. Moreover, we find an explicit generator for the characteristic ideal of the torsion Iwasawa module governing the growth of the $p$-part of the number of spanning trees in such towers.

Abstract:Booher, Cais, Kramer-Miller and Upton study a class of $\mathbf{Z}_p$-tower of curves in characteristic $p$ with ramification controlled by an integer $d$. In the special case that $d$ divides $p-1$, they prove a formula for the higher $a$-numbers of these curves involving the number of lattice points in a complicated region of the plane. Booher and Cais had previously conjectured that for $n$ sufficiently large the higher $a$-numbers of the $n$th curve are given by formulae of the form $\alpha(n) p^{2n} + \beta(n) p^n + \lambda_r(n) n + \nu(n) $ for $n$ sufficiently large, where $\alpha,\beta,\nu,\lambda_r$ are periodic functions of $n$. This is an example of a new kind of Iwasawa theory. We establish this conjecture by carefully studying these lattice points.

Abstract:We begin with modular form periods, a focal point of several Yuri Manin's works. The similarity is discussed between the corresponding zeta-polynomials and superpolynomials of algebraic links, closely related to Khovanov-Rozansky polynomials. We focus on DAHA superpolynomials and motivic ones, defined via compactified Jacobians of plane curve singularities and their counterparts in arbitrary ranks; the non-unibranch construction is new. They conjecturally coincide with the corresponding generalizations of L-functions and satisfy the Riemann Hypothesis in some sectors of the parameters. Presumably, the motivic ones an be interpreted as certain partition functions of Landau-Ginzburg models associated with plane curve singularities; RH for them is remarkably similar to the Lee-Yang circle theorem for Ising models. A q,t-deformation of the Witten index is obtained as an application. General perspectives of the motivic theory of isolated curve and surface singularities are discussed, including possible implications in number theory. Also, we introduce super-analogs of $\rho_{ab}$-invariants and discuss super-deformations of the Riemann's zeta. Among other topics: Verlinde algebras, and the topological vertex.

Zeta elements for elliptic curves and applications

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with conductor $N$ and $p\nmid 2N$ a prime. Let $L$ be an imaginary quadratic field with $p$ split. We prove the existence of $p$-adic zeta element for $E$ over $L$, encoding two different $p$-adic $L$-functions associated to $E$ over $L$ via explicit reciprocity laws at the primes above $p$. We formulate a main conjecture for $E$ over $L$ in terms of the zeta element, mediating different main conjectures in which the $p$-adic $L$-functions appear, and prove some results toward them. The zeta element has various applications to the arithmetic of elliptic curves. This includes a proof of main conjecture for semistable elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ at supersingular primes $p$, as conjectured by Kobayashi in 2002. It leads to the $p$-part of the conjectural Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) formula for such curves of analytic rank zero or one, and enables us to present the first infinite families of non-CM elliptic curves for which the BSD conjecture is true. We provide further evidence towards the BSD conjecture: new cases of $p$-converse to the Gross--Zagier and Kolyvagin theorem, and $p$-part of the BSD formula for ordinary primes $p$. Along the way, we give a proof of a conjecture of Perrin-Riou connecting Beilinson--Kato elements with rational points.

The $p$-adic limits of class numbers in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers

Abstract:This article discusses variants of Weber's class number problem in the spirit of arithmetic topology to connect the results of Sinnott--Kisilevsky and Kionke. Let $p$ be a prime number. We first prove the $p$-adic convergence of class numbers in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a global field and a similar result in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-cover of a compact 3-manifold. Secondly, we establish an explicit formula for the $p$-adic limit of the $p$-power-th cyclic resultants of a polynomial using roots of unity of orders prime to $p$, the $p$-adic logarithm, and the Iwasawa invariants. Finally, we give thorough investigations of torus knots, twist knots, and elliptic curves; we complete the list of the cases with $p$-adic limits being in $\mathbb{Z}$ and find the cases such that the base $p$-class numbers are small and $\nu$'s are arbitrarily large.

Zeta functions of geometrically finite graphs of groups

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the properties of zeta functions associated with infinite graphs of groups that arise as quotients of cuspidal tree-lattices, including all non-uniform arithmetic quotients of the tree of rank one Lie groups over local fields. Through various examples, we illustrate pairs of non-isomorphic cuspidal tree-lattices with the same Ihara zeta function. Additionally, we analyze the spectral behavior of a sequence of graphs of groups whose pole-free regions of zeta functions converge towards 0, which also presents an example of arbitrary small exponential error-term in counting geodesic formula.

Abstract:We fix a monic polynomial f ¯ ( x ) ∈ F q [ x ] \bar f(x) \in \mathbb {F}_q[x] over a finite field of characteristic p p of degree relatively prime to p p , and consider the Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^{\ell }} -Artin–Schreier–Witt tower defined by f ¯ ( x ) \bar f(x) ; this is a tower of curves ⋯ → C m → C m − 1 → ⋯ → C 0 = A 1 \cdots \to C_m \to C_{m-1} \to \cdots \to C_0 =\mathbb {A}^1 , whose Galois group is canonically isomorphic to Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^\ell } , the degree ℓ \ell unramified extension of Z p \mathbb {Z}_p , which is abstractly isomorphic to ( Z p ) ℓ (\mathbb {Z}_p)^\ell as a topological group. We study the Newton slopes of zeta functions of this tower of curves. This reduces to the study of the Newton slopes of L L -functions associated to characters of the Galois group of this tower. We prove that, when the conductor of the character is large enough, the Newton slopes of the L L -function asymptotically form a finite union of arithmetic progressions. As a corollary, we prove the spectral halo property of the spectral variety associated to the Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^{\ell }} -Artin–Schreier–Witt tower (over a large subdomain of the weight space). This extends the main result in a 2016 work of Davis, Wan, and Xiao from rank one case ℓ = 1 \ell =1 to the higher rank case ℓ ≥ 1 \ell \geq 1 .
Discriminant-Stability in $p$-adic Lie Towers of Number Fields

Abstract:In this paper we consider a tower of number fields $\cdots \supseteq K(1) \supseteq K(0) \supseteq K$ arising naturally from a continuous $p$-adic representation of $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/K)$, referred to as a $p$-adic Lie tower over $K$. A recent conjecture of Daqing Wan hypothesizes, for certain $p$-adic Lie towers of curves over $\mathbb{F}_p$, a stable (polynomial) growth formula for the genus. Here we prove the analogous result in characteristic zero, namely: the $p$-adic valuation of the discriminant of the extension $K(i)/K$ is given by a polynomial in $i,p^i$ for $i$ sufficiently large. This generalizes a previously known result on discriminant-growth in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers of local fields of characteristic zero.

Abstract:Lichtenbaum conjectured the existence of a Weil-étale cohomology in order to describe the vanishing order and the special value of the Zeta function of an arithmetic scheme $\mathcal{X}$ at $s=0$ in terms of Euler-Poincaré characteristics. Assuming the (conjectured) finite generation of some étale motivic cohomology groups we construct such a cohomology theory for regular schemes proper over $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathbb{Z})$. In particular, we obtain (unconditionally) the right Weil-étale cohomology for geometrically cellular schemes over number rings. We state a conjecture expressing the vanishing order and the special value up to sign of the Zeta function $\zeta(\mathcal{X},s)$ at $s=0$ in terms of a perfect complex of abelian groups $R\Gamma_{W,c}(\mathcal{X},\mathbb{Z})$. Then we relate this conjecture to Soulé's conjecture and to the Tamagawa number conjecture of Bloch-Kato, and deduce its validity in simple cases.

Abstract:Let $p$ and $q$ be distinct prime numbers, with $q\equiv 1\pmod{12}$. Let $N$ be a positive integer that is coprime to $pq$. We prove a formula relating the Hasse--Weil zeta function of the modular curve $X_0(qN)_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ to the Ihara zeta function of the $p$-isogeny graphs of supersingular elliptic curves defined over $\overline{\mathbb{F}_q}$ equipped with a $\Gamma_0(N)$-level structure. When $N=1$, this recovers a result of Sugiyama.

These results are extensions of the p-adic analogues of results given by Wüstholz in the complex domain [see A. Baker and G. Wüstholz, Logarithmic Forms and Diophantine Geometry, New Mathematical Monographs, 9 (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2007), Theorem 6.3] and also generalise a result of Bertrand to higher dimensions ['Sous-groupes à un paramètre p-adique de variétés de groupe', Invent. Abstract:We study representation zeta functions of finitely generated, torsion-free nilpotent groups which are rational points of unipotent group schemes over rings of integers of number fields. Using the Kirillov orbit method and p-adic integration, we prove rationality and functional equations for almost all local factors of the Euler products of these zeta functions. We further give explicit formulae, in terms of Dedekind zeta functions, for the zeta functions of class-2-nilpotent groups obtained from three infinite families of group schemes, generalising the integral Heisenberg group. As an immediate corollary, we obtain precise asymptotics for the representation growth of these groups, and key analytic properties of their zeta functions, such as meromorphic continuation. We express the local factors of these zeta functions in terms of generating functions for finite Weyl groups of type B. This allows us to establish a formula for the joint distribution of three functions, or 'statistics', on such Weyl groups. Finally, we compare our explicit formulae to p-adic integrals associated to relative invariants of three infinite families of prehomogeneous vector spaces.

We derive elegant formulas for these zeta functions and reveal patterns of eigenvalues of these buildings, by introducing and applying insightful tools including digraphs X0 and X2, cyclic n-partite graphs, partite-transitive group actions, and Springer's theorem on Hecke algebras.

Abstract:The explicit construction of function fields tower with many rational points relative to the genus in the tower play a key role for the construction of asymptotically good algebraic-geometric codes. In 1997 Garcia, Stichtenoth and Thomas [6] exhibited two recursive asymptotically good Kummer towers over any non-prime field. Wulftange determined the limit of one tower in his PhD thesis [13]. In this paper we determine the limit of another tower [14].

Abstract:This is an expanded version. We study relations among special values of zeta functions, invariants of toric varieties, and generalized Dedekind sums. In particular, we use invariants arising in the Todd class of a toric variety to give a new explicit formula for the values of the zeta function of a real quadratic field at nonpositive integers. We also express these invariants in terms of the generalized Dedekind sums studied previously by several authors. The paper includes conceptual proofs of the above mentioned relations and explicit computations of the various zeta values and Dedekind sums involved.

Abstract:For differential operators of Calabi-Yau type, Candelas, de la Ossa and van Straten conjecture the appearance of $p$-adic zeta values in the matrix entries of their $p$-adic Frobenius structure expressed in the standard basis of solutions near a MUM-point. We prove that this phenomenon holds for simplicial and hyperoctahedral families of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in $n$ dimensions, in which case the Frobenius matrix entries are rational linear combinations of products of $\zeta_p(k)$ with $1 < k < n$.
