Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop a new axiomatization of planar geometry by reinterpreting the original axioms of Euclid. The basic concept is still that of a line segment but its equivalent notion of betweenness is viewed as a topological, not a metric concept. That leads quickly to the notion of connectedness without any need to dwell on the definition of topology. In our approach line segments must be connected. Lines and planes are unified via the concept of separation: lines are separated into two components by each point, planes contain lines that separate them into two components as well. We add a subgroup of bijections preserving line segments and establishing unique isomorphism of basic geometrical sets, and the axiomatic structure is complete. Of fundamental importance is the Fixed Point Theorem that allows for creation of the concepts of length and congruency of line segments. The resulting structure is much more in sync with modern science than other axiomatic approaches to planar geometry. For instance, it leads naturally to the Erlangen Program in geometry. Our Conditions of Homogeneity and Rigidity have two interpretations. In physics, they correspond to the basic tenet that independent observers should arrive at the same measurement and are related to boosts in special relativity. In geometry, they mean uniqueness of congruence for certain geometrical figures. Another thread of the paper is the introduction of boundary at infinity, an important concept of modern mathematics, and linking of Pasch Axiom to endowing boundaries at infinity with a natural relation of betweenness. That way spherical geometry can be viewed as geometry of boundaries at infinity.
Bilocal geodesic operators as a tool of investigating the optical properties of spacetimes

Abstract:In my thesis, I present one particular example of the formalism capable of describing the propagation of a family of light rays in a curved spacetime. It is based on the resolvent operator of the geodesic deviation equation for null geodesics which is known as the bilocal geodesic operator (BGO) formalism. The BGO formalism generalizes the standard treatment of light ray bundles by allowing observations extended in time or performed by a family of neighbouring observers. Furthermore, it provides a more unified picture of relativistic geometrical optics and imposes a number of consistency requirements between the optical observables. The thesis begins with a brief introduction of the transfer matrix and its relativistic versions known as the Jacobi propagators and the bilocal geodesic operators. Then the basics of differential geometry are reviewed, with an emphasis on the geometry of the tangent bundle and the geodesic flow, which later provide the foundation for the BGO formalism. The mathematical introduction is then followed by two articles about the applications of the BGO formalism in the studies of optical distance measures and the conclusion.

Abstract:We survey our recent papers (some being joint ones) about the relation between the geometry of a compact Kähler manifold and the existence of automorphisms of positive entropy on it. We also use the language of log minimal model program (LMMP) in biraitonal geometry, but not its more sophisticated technical part. We give applications of LMMP to positivity of log canonical divisor of a Mori / Brody / Lang hyperbolic (quasi-) projective (singular) variety.

Through the analysis of works of various artists and scientists like Plato, Durer, Kepler, Escher, Grisey or the present author, it is shown how the process of creation in science and in the arts rests on aesthetical principles such as symmetry, regular polyhedra, laws of harmonic proportion, tessellations, group theory, etc., as well as beauty, conciseness and emotional approach of the world.

Abstract:Visualizing graphs and networks in non‐Euclidean space can have benefits such as natural focus+context in hyperbolic space and the familiarity of interactions in spherical space. Despite work on these topics going back to the mid 1990s, there is no survey, or a part of a survey for this area of research. In this paper we review and categorize over 60 relevant papers and analyze them by geometry, (e.g., spherical, hyperbolic, torus), by contribution (e.g., technique, evaluation, proof, application), and by graph class (e.g., tree, planar, complex).

An Observer-Based View of Euclidean Geometry

Abstract:Influence network of events is a view of the universe based on events that may be related to one another via influence. The network of events form a partially-ordered set which, when quantified consistently via a technique called chain projection, results in the emergence of spacetime and the Minkowski metric as well as the Lorentz transformation through changing an observer from one frame to another. Interestingly, using this approach, the motion of a free electron as well as the Dirac equation can be described. Indeed, the same approach can be employed to show how a discrete version of some of the features of Euclidean geometry, including directions, dimensions, subspaces, Pythagorean theorem, and geometric shapes can emerge. In this paper, after reviewing the essentials of the influence network formalism, we build on some of our previous works to further develop aspects of Euclidean geometry. Specifically, we present the emergence of geometric shapes, a discrete version of the Parallel postulate, the dot product, and the outer (wedge product) in 2+1 dimensions. Finally, we show that the scalar quantification of two concatenated orthogonal intervals exhibits features that are similar to those of the well-known concept of geometric product in geometric Clifford algebras.

Abstract:These are the notes of lectures delivered at Grenoble's summer school on \emph{Arakelov Geo\-me\-try and Diophantine Applications}, in June 2017. They constitute an introduction to the study of Euclidean lattices and of their invariants defined in terms of theta series. Recall that Euclidean lattice is defined as a pair $\bar{E}:= (E, \Vert .\Vert)$ where $E$ is some free $\mathbb{Z}$-module of finite rank $E$ and $\Vert. \Vert$ is some Euclidean norm on the real vector space $E_\mathbb{R} := E \otimes \mathbb{R}$. The most basic of these invariants is the non-negative real number: $$h^0_\theta(\bar{E}) := \log \sum_{v \in E} e^{- \pi \Vert v \Vert^2}.$$ In these notes, we explain how such invariants naturally arise when one investigates basic questions concerning classical invariants of Euclidean lattices, such as their successive minima, their covering radius, or the number of lattice points in balls of a given radius. We notably discuss their significance from the perspective of Arakelov geometry and of the analogy between number fields and function fields, their role (discovered by Banaszczyk) in the derivation of optimal transference estimates, and their interpretation in terms of the formalism of statistical thermodynamics. These notes have been primarily written for an audience of arithmetic geometers, but should also be suited to a wider circle of mathematicians and theoretical physicists with some interest in Euclidean lattices or in the mathematical foundations of statistical physics.

Notes on Bolyai's 'Appendix'

Abstract:This paper aims to provide an explanatory edition of Bolyai's 'Appendix Demonstrating the Absolute Science of Space', first published in 1832. In this treatise Bolyai began by extending neutral (or 'absolute') geometry by deriving a number of theorems which are independent of Euclid's parallel postulate. Then, while retaining Euclid first four postulates, he explored the consequences of replacing the parallel postulate with a different assumption, that through a given point not on a given straight line, more than than one straight line can be drawn which does not intersect the given line. On this basis Bolyai developed a non-Euclidean geometry nowadays called hyperbolic geometry. The English translation of Bolyai's text is reprinted in the paper, with explanatory notes provided at the end of each section. Some of the theorems are discussed in detail, with a particular focus on those in which Bolyai derived the trigonometric identities of the hyperbolic plane and on his astonishing quadrature of the circle. Bolyai's terse style of exposition can be quite challenging, so I have tried to fill in some of the mathematical details which he chose to omit, either through lack of space or simply because he thought them to obvious too include.

Abstract:By "parallelogram geometry" we mean the elementary, "commutative", geometry corresponding to vector addition, and by "trapezoid geometry" a certain "non-commutative deformation" of the former. This text presents an elementary approach via exercises using dynamical software (such as geogebra), hopefully accessible to a wide mathematical audience, from undergraduate students and high school teachers to researchers, proceeding in three steps: (1) experimental geometry, (2) algebra (linear algebra and elementary group theory), and (3) axiomatic geometry.

Abstract:This is an expository treatise on the development of the classical geometries, starting from the origins of Euclidean geometry a few centuries BC up to around 1870. At this time classical differential geometry came to an end, and the Riemannian geometric approach started to be developed. Moreover, the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry, about 40 years earlier, had just been demonstrated to be a "true" geometry on the same footing as Euclidean geometry. These were radically new ideas, but henceforth the importance of the topic became gradually realized. As a consequence, the conventional attitude to the basic geometric questions, including the possible geometric structure of the physical space, was challenged, and foundational problems became an important issue during the following decades. Such a basic understanding of the status of geometry around 1870 enables one to study the geometric works of Sophus Lie and Felix Klein at the beginning of their career in the appropriate historical perspective.

Abstract:Until recently, there was one unsolved riddle regarding the logic that Lobachevsky followed when creating his non-Euclidean (hyperbolic) geometry. This article shows that such a logic is implicitly present in him, and it coincides with the logic already formed now, called complementary-dialectical logic. This logic stems from Heidegger’s fundamental ontology. In the field of the geometric discipline of thought, complementary-dialectical logic makes it possible to combine the historical and logical aspects of the genesis of Lobachevsky’s geometry. Allows us to understand how and why imaginary points appear on a hyperbolic line, how they are related to points at infinity, etc. constructing a geometric picture of the world as part of the overall scientific picture.

On Geometry and Symmetries in Classical and Quantum Theories of Gauge Gravity

Abstract:Spin Foam and Loop approaches to Quantum Gravity reformulate Einstein's theory of relativity in terms of connection variables. The metric properties are encoded in face bivectors/conjugate fluxes that are required to satisfy certain conditions, in order to allow for their geometric interpretation. We show that the (sub-)set of the so-called `volume simplicity constraints' is not implemented properly in the current EPRL-FK spinfoam vertex amplitude, if extended to arbitrary polyhedra. We then propose that a certain knot-invariant of the bivector geometry, induced on the boundary graph, encodes the missing conditions, allowing for reconstruction of a polytope from its two-dimensional faces. Implemented in the quantum amplitude, this leads to corrected semi-classical asymptotics for a hypercuboid, and is conjectured to be non-trivial in more general situations. The analysis of linear version of `volume simplicity' suggests to switch from hypersurface normals to edge lengths, that is from 3-forms directly to tetrads -- in the extended configuration space of the Plebanski constrained formulation. We then give the corresponding dual version of linear simplicity constraints, which prescribe 3d volume for the polyhedral faces in the boundary of a 4d polytope. We also analyse the status of metric/vielbein degrees of freedom and the role of local translations in the classical Einstein-Cartan gravity, viewed as a Poincare gauge theory. The relation with the diffeomorphism symmetry is established through the key concept of development, which generalizes parallel transport of vectors in the geometric theory of Cartan connections. We advocate the latter to be the natural gauge-theoretic framework for the theory of relativity.
