Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the major global observatory for VHE gamma-ray astronomy over the next decade and beyond. It will be an explorer of the extreme universe, with a broad scientific potential: from understanding the role of relativistic cosmic particles, to the search for dark matter. Covering photon energies from 20 GeV to 300 TeV, and with an angular resolution unique in the field, of about 1 arc min, CTA will improve on all aspects of the performance with respect to current instruments, surveying the high energy sky hundreds of times faster than previous TeV telescopes, and with a much deeper view. The very large collection area of CTA makes it an important probe of transient phenomena. The first CTA telescope has just been inaugurated in the Canary Islands, Spain, and as more telescopes are added in the coming years, scientific operation will start. It is evident that CTA will have important synergies with many of the new generation astronomical and astroparticle observatories. In this talk we will review the CTA science case from the point of view of its synergies with other instruments and facilities, highlighting the CTA needs in terms of external data, as well as the opportunities and strategies for cooperation to achieve the basic CTA science goals.

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the next-generation gamma-ray observatory, investigating gamma-ray and cosmic ray astrophysics at energies from 20 GeV to more than 300 TeV. The observatory, consisting of large arrays of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in both the southern and northern hemispheres, will provide full-sky coverage and will achieve a sensitivity improved by up to an order of magnitude compared to existing instruments such as H.E.S.S., MAGIC and VERITAS. CTA is expected to discover hundreds of new TeV gamma- ray sources, allowing it to significantly advance our understanding of the origin of cosmic rays, to probe much larger distances in the universe, and to search for WIMP dark matter with unprecedented sensitivity in TeV mass range. The development of CTA is being carried out by a worldwide consortium of scientists from 32 countries. Consortium scientists have developed the core scientific programme of CTA and institutes of the Consortium are expected to provide the bulk of the CTA components. The construction of CTA is overseen by the CTA Observatory that will in the future manage observatory operations, the guest observer programme, and data dissemination. This talk will review the scientific motivation for CTA, focusing on the key science projects that form the core programme of research. The talk will outline the design of CTA, including the science drivers, overall concept, performance optimization, and array layouts. The current status of CTA, including sites, prototype telescope progress, and steps forward will also be described.

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) \cite{CTA:2010} will be the successor to current Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) like H.E.S.S., MAGIC and VERITAS. CTA will improve in sensitivity by about an order of magnitude compared to the current generation of IACTs. The energy range will extend from well below 100 GeV to above 100 TeV. To accomplish these goals, CTA will consist of two arrays, one in each hemisphere, consisting of 50-80 telescopes and composed of three different telescope types with different mirror sizes. It will be the first open observatory for very high energy $\gamma$-ray astronomy. The Array Control working group of CTA is currently evaluating existing technologies which are best suited for a project like CTA. The considered solutions comprise the ALMA Common Software (ACS), the OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) and the Data Distribution Service (DDS) for bulk data transfer. The first applications, like an automatic observation scheduler and the control software for some prototype instrumentation have been developed.

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation high-energy gamma-ray observatory. It will improve the sensitivity of current instruments up to an order of magnitude, while providing energy coverage for photons from 20 GeV to at least 300 TeV to reach high redshifts and extreme accelerators and will give access to the shortest time-scale phenomena. CTA is thus a uniquely powerful instrument for the exploration of the violent and variable universe. The ability to probe short timescales at the highest energies will allow CTA to explore the connection between accretion and ejection phenomena surrounding compact objects, investigate the processes occurring in relativistic outflows, and open up significant phase space for serendipitous discoveries. Aiming at playing a central role in the era of multi-messenger astrophysics, the CTA Transient program includes follow-up observations of a broad range of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger alerts, ranging from Galactic compact object binary systems to novel phenomena like Fast Radio Bursts. A promising case is that of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), where CTA will for the first time enable high-statistics measurements above $\sim$ 10 GeV, probing new spectral components and shedding light on the physical processes at work in these systems. Dedicated programs searching for very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray counterparts to gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos complete the CTA transients program. This contribution will introduce and outline the CTA Transients program. We will provide an overview of the various science topics and discuss the links to multi-messenger and multi-wavelength observations.

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), a ground-based facility for very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy, will operate as an open observatory, serving a wide scientific community to explore and to study the non-thermal universe. Open community access is a novelty in this domain, putting a challenge on the implementation of services that make VHE gamma-ray astronomy as accessible as any other waveband. We present here the design of the CTA Observer Access system that comprises support of scientific users, dissemination of data and software, tools for scientific analysis, and the system to submit observing proposals. We outline the scientific user workflows and provide the status of the current developments.

A Monte Carlo simulation study for cosmic-ray chemical composition measurement with Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract:Our Galaxy is filled with cosmic-ray particles and more than 98% of them are atomic nuclei. In order to clarify their origin and acceleration mechanism, chemical composition measurements of these cosmic rays with wide energy coverage play an important role. Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) arrays are designed to detect cosmic gamma-rays in the very-high-energy regime ($\sim$TeV). Recently these systems proved to be capable of measuring cosmic-ray chemical composition in the sub-PeV region by capturing direct Cherenkov photons emitted by charged primary particles. Extensive air shower profiles measured by IACTs also contain information about the primary particle type since the cross section of inelastic scattering in the air depends on the primary mass number. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation IACT system, which will consist of multiple types of telescopes and have a km$^2$-scale footprint and extended energy coverage (20 GeV to 300 TeV). In order to estimate CTA potential for cosmic ray composition measurement, a full Monte Carlo simulation including a description of extensive air shower and detector response is needed. We generated a number of cosmic-ray nuclei events (8 types selected from H to Fe) for a specific CTA layout candidate in the southern-hemisphere site. We applied Direct Cherenkov event selection and shower profile analysis to these data and preliminary results on charge number resolution and expected event count rate for these cosmic-ray nuclei are presented.

Status of the Large Size Telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will consist of two arrays of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) at the northern and southern hemispheres. CTA will feature IACTs with mirrors of three different sizes optimized to cover different energy ranges. The proposed sub-arrays of four Large Size Telescopes (LST) at CTA-North and CTA-South target the lowest energy range between around 20 GeV and 100 GeV. Thanks to their low weight of around 110 tons the LSTs can move by 180 deg in azimuth in 20 seconds for Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) follow-up. An LST has a tessellated parabolic mirror of 23 m diameter equipped with a system of actuators to correct for gravity-induced deformations during data taking. Its low-weight 2 ton camera at the prime focus has a 4.5 deg diameter, 1855 high QE PMTs and an embedded readout with 1 GSps sampling speed designed for data acquisition rates exceeding 10 kHz. A fully equipped LST has been installed at the CTA-North site in 2018 and is expected to be finished commissioning during 2019. The remaining three LSTs in the north will be installed by 2022. We will review the status of the LSTs, describe the installation of the first LST and report on the first results of the commissioning tests.

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation observatory for very high energy gamma rays. The capability of the array to detect gamma-rays above 10 TeV is going to be achieved with a large number of Small Size Telescopes (SSTs) which will cover a large area. The subarray composed of SSTs has to compromise the number of telescopes (cost) and the large effective area. The separation between the telescopes has to be adjusted to achieve highest sensitivity with the smallest number of telescopes. On the other hand larger separation can worsen the energy threshold as well as the energy and angular resolutions. In our study we have investigated the optimal spacing between the telescopes of the SST array using an analytical approach and the concept of telescope cell consisting of four telescopes as well as Monte Carlo simulations of the sets of cells.
Prototype Open Event Reconstruction Pipeline for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next-generation gamma-ray observatory currently under construction. It will improve over the current generation of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) by a factor of five to ten in sensitivity and it will be able to observe the whole sky from a combination of two sites: a northern site in La Palma, Spain, and a southern one in Paranal, Chile. CTA will also be the first open gamma-ray observatory. Accordingly, the data analysis pipeline is developed as open-source software. The event reconstruction pipeline accepts raw data of the telescopes and processes it to produce suitable input for the higher-level science tools. Its primary tasks include reconstructing the physical properties of each recorded shower and providing the corresponding instrument response functions. ctapipe is a framework providing algorithms and tools to facilitate raw data calibration, image extraction, image parameterization and event reconstruction. Its main focus is currently the analysis of simulated data but it has also been successfully applied for the analysis of data obtained with the first CTA prototype telescopes, such as the Large-Sized Telescope 1 (LST-1). pyirf is a library to calculate IACT instrument response functions, needed to obtain physics results like spectra and light curves, from the reconstructed event lists. Building on these two, protopipe is a prototype for the event reconstruction pipeline for CTA. Recent developments in these software packages will be presented.

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation facility of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. It will reach unprecedented sensitivity and energy resolution in very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. CTA will detect Cherenkov light emitted within an atmospheric shower of particles initiated by cosmic-gamma rays or cosmic rays entering the Earth's atmosphere. From the combination of images the Cherenkov light produces in the telescopes, one is able to infer the primary particle energy and direction. A correct energy estimation can be thus performed only if the local atmosphere is well characterized. The atmosphere not only affects the shower development itself, but also the Cherenkov photon transmission from the emission point in the particle shower, at about 10-20 km above the ground, to the detector. Cherenkov light on the ground is peaked in the UV-blue region, and therefore molecular and aerosol extinction phenomena are important. The goal of CTA is to control systematics in energy reconstruction to better than 10%. For this reason, a careful and continuous monitoring and characterization of the atmosphere is required. In addition, CTA will be operated as an observatory, with data made public along with appropriate analysis tools. High-level data quality can only be ensured if the atmospheric properties are consistently and continuously taken into account. In this contribution, we concentrate on discussing the implementation strategy for the various atmospheric monitoring instruments currently under discussion in CTA. These includes Raman lidars and ceilometers, stellar photometers and others available both from commercial providers and public research centres.

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is an international project for a next-generation ground-based gamma ray observatory, aiming to improve on the sensitivity of current-generation experiments by an order of magnitude and provide energy coverage from 30 GeV to more than 300 TeV. The 9.7m Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) candidate medium-size telescope for CTA exploits a novel aplanatic two-mirror optical design that provides a large field of view of 8 degrees and substantially improves the off-axis performance giving better angular resolution across all of the field of view with respect to single-mirror telescopes. The realization of the SC optical design implies the challenging production of large aspherical mirrors accompanied by a submillimeter-precision custom alignment system. In this contribution we report on the status of the implementation of the optical system on a prototype 9.7 m SC telescope located at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona.

Performance update of an event-type based analysis for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the next-generation observatory in the field of very-high-energy (20 GeV to 300 TeV) gamma-ray astroparticle physics. The traditional approach to data analysis in this field is to apply quality cuts, optimized using Monte Carlo simulations, on the data acquired to maximize sensitivity. Subsequent steps of the analysis typically use the surviving events to calculate one set of instrument response functions (IRFs) to physically interpret the results. However, an alternative approach is the use of event types, as implemented in experiments such as the Fermi-LAT. This approach divides events into sub-samples based on their reconstruction quality, and a set of IRFs is calculated for each sub-sample. The sub-samples are then combined in a joint analysis, treating them as independent observations. In previous works we demonstrated that event types, classified using Machine Learning methods according to their expected angular reconstruction quality, have the potential to significantly improve the CTA angular and energy resolution of a point-like source analysis. Now, we validated the production of event-type wise full-enclosure IRFs, ready to be used with science tools (such as Gammapy and ctools). We will report on the impact of using such an event-type classification on CTA high-level performance, compared to the traditional procedure.

End-to-end data acquisition pipeline for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will operate several types of telescopes and cameras. The individual camera trigger rates will vary much - from 0.6 to 15 kHz - while the content of the raw data will be heterogeneous. Raw data streams of up to 43 Gbps per telescope must be handled efficiently, from the camera front-ends down to the on-site repository and real-time analysis. In addition, the system must transcode all raw data to a common, pre-calibrated format. We will present the pipeline that we propose to implement this data acquisition pipeline. It will format the raw data to a common structure, provide facilities to run camera-specific algorithms and compress and write data to the on-site repository. We will also present the Python interface that allows the analysis pipeline to access the data. Eventually, the two strategies foreseen to interface the camera servers will be detailed and the current status of the developments for CTA will be given, with the last performance figures measured.

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation Cherenkov telescope facility. It will consist of a large number of segmented-mirror telescopes of three different diameters, placed in two locations, one in the northern and one in the southern hemisphere, thus covering the whole sky. The total number of mirror tiles will be on the order of 10,000, corresponding to a reflective area of ~10^4 m^2. The Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Tübingen (IAAT) is currently developing mirror control alignment mechanics, electronics, and software optimized for the medium sized telescopes. In addition, IAAT is participating in the CTA mirror prototype testing. In this paper we present the status of the current developments, the main results of recent tests, and plans for the production phase of the mirror control system. We also briefly present the Tübingen facility for mirror testing.

Abstract:Surveys open up unbiased discovery space and generate legacy datasets of long-lasting value. One of the goals of imaging arrays of Cherenkov telescopes like CTA is to survey areas of the sky for faint very high energy gamma-ray (VHE) sources, especially sources that would not have drawn attention were it not for their VHE emission (e.g. the Galactic “dark accelerators”). More than half the currently known VHE sources are to be found in the Galactic Plane. Using standard techniques, CTA can carry out a survey of the region |ℓ|⩽60°,|b|⩽2° in 250h (1/4th the available time per year at one location) down to a uniform sensitivity of 3mCrab (a “Galactic Plane survey”). CTA could also survey 1/4th of the sky down to a sensitivity of 20mCrab in 370h of observing time (an “all-sky survey”), which complements well the surveys by the Fermi/LAT at lower energies and extended air shower arrays at higher energies. Observations in (non-standard) divergent pointing mode may shorten the “all-sky survey” time to about 100h with no loss in survey sensitivity. We present the scientific rationale for these surveys, their place in the multi-wavelength context, their possible impact and their feasibility. We find that the Galactic Plane survey has the potential to detect hundreds of sources. Implementing such a survey should be a major goal of CTA. Additionally, about a dozen blazars, or counterparts to Fermi/LAT sources, are expected to be detected by the all-sky survey, whose prime motivation is the search for extragalactic “dark accelerators”.

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) consortium aims to create the next generation Very High Energy gamma-ray observatory. It will be devoted to the observation of gamma rays over a wide band of energy, from 20 GeV to 300 TeV. Three different classes, Large, Medium and Small Size Telescopes, are foreseen to cover the low, intermediate and high energy regions, respectively. The energy range of the Small Size Telescopes (SSTs) extends from 1 TeV to 300 TeV. Among them, the Gamma-ray Cherenkov Telescope (GCT), a telescope based on a Schwarzschild-Couder dual-mirror optical design, is one of the prototypes under construction proposed for the SST sub-array of CTA. This contribution focuses on the mechanical structure of GCT. It reports on last progress on the mechanical design and discusses this in the context of CTA specifications. Recent advances in the assembly and installation of the opto-mechanical prototype of GCT on the French site of the Paris Observatory are also described.

Status of the Cherenkov Telescope Array's Large Size Telescopes

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory, will be deployed over two sites in the two hemispheres. Both sites will be equipped with four Large Size Telescopes (LSTs), which are crucial to achieve the science goals of CTA in the 20-200 GeV energy range. Each LST is equipped with a primary tessellated mirror dish of 23 m diameter, supported by a structure made mainly of carbon fibre reinforced plastic tubes and aluminum joints. This solution guarantees light weight (around 100 tons), essential for fast repositioning to any position in the sky in <20 seconds. The camera is composed of 1855 PMTs and embeds the control, readout and trigger electronics. The detailed design is now complete and production of the first LST, which will serve as a prototype for the remaining seven, is well underway. In 2016 the first LST will be installed at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on the Canary island of La Palma (Spain). In this talk we will outline the technical solutions adopted to fulfill the design requirements, present results of element prototyping and describe the installation and operation plans.

Sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array to a dark matter signal from the Galactic centre

Abstract:High-energy gamma rays are promising tools to constrain or reveal the nature of dark matter, in particular Weakly Interacting Massive Particles. Being well into its pre-construction phase, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will soon probe the sky in the 20 GeV - 300 TeV energy range. Thanks to its improved energy and angular resolutions as well as significantly larger effective area when compared to the current generation of Cherenkov telescopes, CTA is expected to probe heavier dark matter, with unprecedented sensitivity, reaching the thermal annihilation cross-section at ~1 TeV. This talk will summarise the planned dark matter search strategies with CTA, focusing on the signal from the Galactic centre. As observed with the Fermi LAT at lower energies, this region is rather complex and CTA will be the first ground-based observatory sensitive to the large scale diffuse astrophysical emission from that region. We report on the collaboration effort to study the impact of such extended astrophysical backgrounds on the dark matter search, based on Fermi-LAT data in order to guide our observational strategies, taking into account various sources of systematic uncertainty.

Status and motivation of Raman LIDARs development for the CTA Observatory

Abstract:The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. It would reach unprecedented sensitivity and energy resolution in very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. In order to reach these goals, the systematic uncertainties derived from the varying atmospheric conditions shall be reduced to the minimum. Different instruments may help to account for these uncertainties. Several groups in the CTA consortium are currently building Raman LIDARs to be installed at the CTA sites. Raman LIDARs are devices composed of a powerful laser that shoots into the atmosphere, a collector that gathers the backscattered light from molecules and aerosols, a photosensor, an optical module that spectrally select wavelengths of interest, and a read-out system. Raman LIDARs can reduce the systematic uncertainties in the reconstruction of the gamma-ray energies down to 5 % level. All Raman LIDARs subject of this work, have design features that make them different than typical Raman LIDARs used in atmospheric science, and are characterized by large collecting mirrors ($\sim2~$m$^2$). They have multiple elastic and Raman read-out channels (at least 4) and custom-made optics design. In this paper, the motivation for Raman LIDARs, the design and the status of advance of these technologies are described.
