Abstract:Majorana zero modes (MZM-s) occurring at the edges of a 1D, p-wave, spinless superconductor, in absence of fluctuations of the phase of the superconducting order parameter, are quintessential examples of topologically-protected zero-energy modes occurring at the edges of 1D symmetry-protected topological phases. In this work, we numerically investigate the fate of the topological phase in the presence of phase-fluctuations using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. To that end, we consider a one-dimensional array of MZM-s on mesoscopic superconducting islands at zero temperature. Cooper-pair and MZM-assisted single-electron tunneling, together with finite charging energy of the mesoscopic islands, give rise to a rich phase-diagram of this model. We show that the system can be in either a Mott-insulating phase, a Luttinger liquid (LL) phase of Cooper-pairs or a second gapless phase. In contrast to the LL of Cooper-pairs, this second phase is characterized by nonlocal string correlation functions which decay algebraically due to gapless charge-$e$ excitations. The three phases are separated from each other by phase-transitions of either Kosterlitz-Thouless or Ising type. Using a Jordan-Wigner transformation, we map the system to a generalized Bose-Hubbard model with two types of hopping and use DMRG to analyze the different phases and the phase-transitions.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is whether the topological phase can remain stable in a one - dimensional spin - less p - wave superconductor when there are phase fluctuations. Specifically, the author studied the behavior of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in a one - dimensional spin - less p - wave superconductor in contact with a one - dimensional s - wave superconductor by numerical methods. The key to this problem lies in understanding the influence of phase fluctuations on the topological phase when the assumed conditions are relaxed, that is, not in contact with a three - dimensional superconductor. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, the author explored the different phases that the system may enter and the nature of phase transitions between them. A model, namely the one - dimensional Majorana Bose - Hubbard (MBH) model, was constructed in the paper. This model takes into account factors such as Cooper pair tunneling, single - electron tunneling, and the finite charging energy of mesoscopic islands. Under the combined action of these factors, the system can be in the Mott insulating phase, the Luttinger liquid phase of Cooper pairs with charge - 2e, or the second gapless phase. The transitions between the latter two phases and between them and the Mott insulating phase are respectively described by Kosterlitz - Thouless - type or Ising - type phase transitions. Through this research, the author hopes to reveal whether the topological phase can still stably exist under actual conditions (such as the presence of phase fluctuations), which is of great significance for the application of using Majorana zero modes for quantum computing.
