Abstract:Let X be a smooth subvariety of CP^N. We study a flow, called balancing flow, on the space of projectively equivalent embeddings of X, which attempts to deform the given embedding into a balanced one. If L->X is an ample line bundle, considering embeddings via H^0(L^k) gives a sequence of balancing flows. We prove that, provided these flows are started at appropriate points, they converge to Calabi flow for as long as it exists. This result is the parabolic analogue of Donaldson's theorem relating balanced embeddings to metrics with constant scalar curvature [JDG 59(3):479-522, 2001]. In our proof we combine Donaldson's techniques with an asymptotic result of Liu-Ma [arXiv:math/0601260v2] which, as we explain, describes the asymptotic behaviour of the derivative of the map FS\circ Hilb whose fixed points are balanced metrics.

Abstract:Let $f$ and $g$ be two volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on the cube $Q=[0,1]^{\nu}$, $\nu \geq 3$. We show that there is a divergence-free vector field $v \in L^1((0,1);L^p(Q))$ such that $v$ connects $f$ and $g$ through the corresponding flow and $\Vert v \Vert_{L^1_t L^p_x} \leq C_{p,\nu} \Vert f- g \Vert_{L^p_x}$. In particular we show Shnirelman's inequality, cf. [Shnirelman, Generalized fluid flows, their approximation and applications (1994)], for the optimal Hölder exponent $\alpha =1$, thus proving that the metric on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of $Q$ is equivalent to the $L^2$-distance. To achieve this, we discretise our problem, use some results on flows in discrete networks and then construct a flow in non-discrete space-time out of the discrete solution.

Abstract:We establish that Sarnak's Möbius Disjointness Conjecture holds for product flows between affine linear flows on compact abelian groups with zero topological entropy and a class of rigid dynamical systems. To prove this, we provide an estimate for the average value of the product of the Möbius function and any polynomial phase over short intervals and arithmetic progressions simultaneously. Additionally, we prove that the logarithmically averaged Möbius Disjointness Conjecture holds for the product flow between any affine linear flow on a compact abelian group with zero entropy and any rigid dynamical system. As an application, we show that the logarithmically averaged Möbius Disjointness Conjecture holds for any Lipschitz continuous skew product dynamical system on over a rotation of the circle.

Abstract:This paper introduces assignment flows for density matrices as state spaces for representing and analyzing data associated with vertices of an underlying weighted graph. Determining an assignment flow by geometric integration of the defining dynamical system causes an interaction of the non-commuting states across the graph, and the assignment of a pure (rank-one) state to each vertex after convergence. Adopting the Riemannian Bogoliubov-Kubo-Mori metric from information geometry leads to closed-form local expressions which can be computed efficiently and implemented in a fine-grained parallel manner. Restriction to the submanifold of commuting density matrices recovers the assignment flows for categorial probability distributions, which merely assign labels from a finite set to each data point. As shown for these flows in our prior work, the novel class of quantum state assignment flows can also be characterized as Riemannian gradient flows with respect to a non-local non-convex potential, after proper reparametrization and under mild conditions on the underlying weight function. This weight function generates the parameters of the layers of a neural network, corresponding to and generated by each step of the geometric integration scheme. Numerical results indicates and illustrate the potential of the novel approach for data representation and analysis, including the representation of correlations of data across the graph by entanglement and tensorization.

Abstract:Motivated by linear Schrodinger equations with almost periodic potentials and phase transitions over almost periodic lattices, we introduce the so-called skew-product quasi-flows (SPQFs), which may admit both temporal and spatial discontinuity. In this paper we establish two basic theorems for SPQFs. One is an extension of the Bogoliubov-Krylov theorem for the existence of invariant Borel probability measures and the other is the uniform ergodic theorems. As applications, it will be shown that such a Schrodinger equation admits a well-defined rotation number.

Abstract:Let , where is a connected Lie group and is a lattice in . Let be an open subset of , and let be a one-parameter subsemigroup of . Consider the set of points in whose -orbit misses ; it has measure zero if the flow is ergodic. It has been conjectured that, assuming ergodicity, this set has Hausdorff dimension strictly smaller than the dimension of . This conjecture has been proved when is compact or when is a simple Lie group of real rank , or, most recently, for certain flows on the space of lattices. In this paper we prove this conjecture for arbitrary -diagonalizable flows on irreducible quotients of semisimple Lie groups. The proof uses exponential mixing of the flow together with the method of integral inequalities for height functions on . We also derive an application to jointly Dirichlet-Improvable systems of linear forms.

Margulis' Inequality for translates of horospherical orbits and applications to equidistribution

Abstract:In this paper we develope a quantitative non-divergence theorem for translates of horospherical orbits, using the technique of Margulis' inequality as developed by Eskin-Margulis-Mozes and Eskin-Margulis. As we use the Margulis' inequality, our results do not depend on the spectral gap of the action. As an application of our techniques, we show that given a horospherical flow over the space of lattices, the horospherical orbit of every lattice defined over a number field, not contained in a proper rational parabolic subgroup is equidistributed with an effective rate.

On typicality of translation flows which are disjoint with their inverse

Abstract:In this paper we prove that translation structures for which the corresponding vertical translation flows is weakly mixing and disjoint with its inverse, form a $G_\delta$-dense set in every non-hyperelliptic connected component of the moduli space $\mathcal M$. This is in contrast to hyperelliptic case, where for every translation structure the associated vertical flow is isomorphic to its inverse. To prove the main result, we study limits of the off-diagonal 3-joinings of special representations of vertical translation flows. Moreover, we construct a locally defined continuous embedding of the moduli space into the space of measure-preserving flows to obtain the $G_\delta$-condition.

Separation of horocycle orbits on moduli space in genus 2

Abstract:We prove a quantitative closing lemma for the horocycle flow induced by the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-action on the moduli space of Abelian differentials with a double-order zero on surfaces of genus 2. The proof proceeds via construction of a Margulis function measuring the discretized fractal dimension of separation of a horocycle orbit of a point from itself, in a direction transverse to the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbit. From this, we deduce that small transversal separation guarantees the existence of a nearby point with a pseudo-Anosov in its Veech group. This is reminiscent of the initial dimension phases in Bourgain-Gamburd for random walks on compact groups, Bourgain-Lindenstrauss-Furman-Mozes for quantitative equidistribution in tori, and quantitative equidistribution of horocycle flow for a product of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ with itself due to Lindenstrauss-Mohammadi-Wang, and multiple other works.

Locally homogeneous Axiom A flows I: projective Anosov subgroups and exponential mixing

Abstract:By constructing a non-empty domain of discontinuity in a suitable homogeneous space, we prove that every torsion-free projective Anosov subgroup is the monodromy group of a locally homogeneous contact Axiom A dynamical system with a unique basic hyperbolic set on which the flow is conjugate to the refraction flow of Sambarino. Under the assumption of irreducibility, we utilize the work of Stoyanov to establish spectral estimates for the associated complex Ruelle transfer operators, and by way of corollary: exponential mixing, exponentially decaying error term in the prime orbit theorem, and a spectral gap for the Ruelle zeta function. With no irreducibility assumption, results of Dyatlov-Guillarmou imply the global meromorphic continuation of zeta functions with smooth weights, as well as the existence of a discrete spectrum of Ruelle-Pollicott resonances and (co)-resonant states. We apply our results to space-like geodesic flows for the convex cocompact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of Danciger-Guéritaud-Kassel, and the Benoist-Hilbert geodesic flow for strictly convex real projective manifolds.

A Triangulation of the Flow Polytope of the Zigzag Graph

Abstract:We show that the dual graph of the triangulation of the flow polytope of the zigzag graph adorned with the length-reverse-length framing is a subgraph of a grid graph. Through Mészáros, Morales, and Striker's bijection between simplices of the triangulation, integer flows of a different, supplemental flow polytope, we provide a simple numerical characterization of the adjacency between the triangulation's simplices in terms of their corresponding integer flows. The proofs result from the development of Postnikov and Stanley's sequences of noncrossing bipartite trees as combinatorial objects we call groves. We propose two new statistics derived from this construction that we conjecture recover the $h^*$-polynomial of the flow polytope of the zigzag graph.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the quantitative recurrence properties in the case of $\mathbb{Z}$-extension of Axiom A flows on a Riemannian manifold. We study the asymptotic behavior of the first return time to a small neighborhood of the starting point. We establish results of almost everywhere convergence, and of convergence in distribution with respect to any probability measure absolutely continuous with respect to the infinite invariant measure. In particular, our results apply to geodesic flows on $\mathbb{Z}$-cover of compact smooth surfaces of negative curvature.

The Convex Geometry of Network Flows

Abstract:In this paper, we derive a number of interesting properties and extensions of the convex flow problem from the perspective of convex geometry. We show that the sets of allowable flows always can be imbued with a downward closure property, which leads to a useful `calculus' of flows, allowing easy combination and splitting of edges. We then derive a conic form for the convex flow problem, which we show is equivalent to the original problem and almost self-dual. Using this conic form, we consider the nonconvex flow problem with fixed costs on the edges, i.e., where there is some fixed cost to send any nonzero flow over an edge. We show that this problem has almost integral solutions by a Shapley--Folkman argument, and we describe a rounding scheme that works well in practice. Additionally, we provide a heuristic for this nonconvex problem which is a simple modification of our original algorithm. We conclude by discussing a number of interesting avenues for future work.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a countable partition $${\cal A}$$ for flows with hyperbolic singularities by introducing a new cross section at each singularity. Such partition forms a Kakutani tower in a neighborhood of the singularity, and turns out to have finite metric entropy for every invariant probability measure. Moreover, each element of $${{\cal A}^\infty}$$ will stay in a scaled tubular neighborhood for arbitrarily long time. This new construction enables us to study entropy theory for singular flows away from homoclinic tangencies, and show that the entropy function is upper semi-continuous with respect to both invariant measures and the flows, provided that the limiting measure satisfies μ(Sing(X)) = 0.

Abstract:We revisit the existence of monotonic quantities along renormalization group flows using only the Null Energy Condition and the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for the entanglement entropy of field theories with anti-de Sitter gravity duals. In particular, we consider flows within the same dimension and holographically reprove the c -, F -, and a -theorems in dimensions two, three, and four. We focus on the family of maximally spherical entangling surfaces, define a quasi-constant of motion corresponding to the breaking of conformal invariance, and use a properly defined distance between minimal surfaces to construct a holographic c -function that is monotonic along the flow. We then apply our method to the case of flows across dimensions: there, we reprove the monotonicity of flows from AdS D +1 to AdS 3 and prove the novel case of flows from AdS 5 to AdS 4 .

Abstract:In contrast to the conventional entanglement-separability paradigm in quantum information theory, we embark on a different path by introducing a classical dichotomy. We aim to quantify a measurement's disturbance by minimizing the difference between input and post-measurement states to distinguish either classical or quantum correlations. Theoretically, we apply a complex-valued gradient flow over Stiefel manifolds for minimization. Our focus extends beyond the practical application to encompass the well-known Łojasiewicz gradient inequality. This inequality is a fundamental tool that guarantees the global convergence of the flow from any initial starting point to the optimal solution. Numerically, we validate the effectiveness and robustness of our proposed method by performing a series of experiments in different scenarios. Experimental results suggest the capability of our approach to accurately and reliably characterize correlations as classical or quantum.

Abstract:Researchers have proposed formal definitions of quantitative information flow based on information theoretic notions such as the Shannon entropy, the min entropy, the guessing entropy, belief, and channel capacity. This paper investigates the hardness of precisely checking the quantitative information flow of a program according to such definitions. More precisely, we study the “bounding problem” of quantitative information flow, defined as follows: Given a program M and a positive real number q, decide if the quantitative information flow of M is less than or equal to q. We prove that the bounding problem is not a k-safety property for any k (even when q is fixed, for the Shannon-entropy-based definition with the uniform distribution), and therefore is not amenable to the self-composition technique that has been successfully applied to checking non-interference. We also prove complexity theoretic hardness results for the case when the program is restricted to loop-free Boolean programs. Specifically, we show that the problem is PP-hard for all definitions, showing a gap with non-interference which is coNP-complete for the same class of programs. The paper also compares the results with the recently proved results on the comparison problems of quantitative information flow.
