Abstract:A thorough study on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation of the Maxwell-Schrödinger system in the semi-classical regime is given. For the Maxwell part which is treated classically, an alternative approach directly using the vector and scalar potentials (A and Φ) is taken. This approach is stable in the long wavelength regime and removes the need to extract the potentials at every time step. Perfectly matched layer (PML) is developed for this system. For the Schrödinger and quantum mechanical part, minimal coupling is applied to couple the charges to the electromagnetic potentials. Simulation results agree with the theory of quantum coherent states.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the numerical analysis of linear and nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations with analytic potentials. While the regularity of the potential (and the source term when there is one) automatically conveys to the solution in the linear cases, this is no longer true in general in the nonlinear case. We also study the rate of convergence of the planewave (Fourier) discretization method for computing numerical approximations of the solution.

Abstract:In the present work we study numerical solution of the radial Dirac equation in a specific case - ab-initio pseudopotential generating process - which is needed within the electronic structure calculations using a Density Functional Theory (DFT) combined with a pseudopotential method. We give a brief introduction to DFT, derive the radial Dirac and Schrodinger equations, show how to solve them both for a given energy and as an eigenvalue problem using a known asymptotic behavior of the solution. Next we compare the nonrelativistic and relativistic eigenvalues for one electron atom. Finally we state a few words about the computer implementation.

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to test the application of the finite element method to quantum mechanical problems, in particular for solving the Schroedinger equation. We begin with an overview of quantum mechanics, and standard numerical techniques. We then give an introduction to finite element analysis using the diffusion equation as an example. Three numerical time evolution methods are considered: the (tried and tested) Crank-Nicolson method, the continuous space-time method, and the discontinuous space-time method.

Abstract:The Madelung–Bohm approach to Quantum Mechanics is used to extend the one-dimensional case to solve the Schrödinger equation by defining potentials for the wavefunctions in two and three dimensions. The relevance of these results to solving the phase retrieval problem (PRP) is stressed. In particular, the one-dimensional problem is solved completely and significant progress is made toward the solution of the PRP in two and three dimensions. Examples are presented.

Abstract:We study the spherical quantum pseudodots in the Schrödinger equation by using the pseudo-harmonic plus harmonic oscillator potentials considering the effect of the external electric and magnetic fields. The finite energy levels and the wave functions are calculated. Furthermore, the behavior of the essential thermodynamic quantities such as, the free energy, the mean energy, the entropy, the specific heat, the magnetization, the magnetic susceptibility, and the persistent currents are also studied by using the characteristic function. Our analytical results are found to be in good agreement with the other works. The numerical results on the energy levels as well as the thermodynamic quantities have also been given.

Abstract:We discuss spectral properties of a regularization approach to a Schrödinger equation set-up for the diffraction of a quantum particle at almost planar patterns. Physically meaningful initial values and potentials are modeled in terms of regularizing families and the solutions can be interpreted as generalized functions. We establish spectral and scattering theoretical properties of the regularizing solution families and provide some comparison with the more direct approximations and simplifications used in physics.

The corresponding energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are determined for any quantum numbers n and l in the framework of the well-known Nikiforov-Uvarov method.

Abstract:The Schrödinger equation is a fundamental equation in quantum mechanics, providing a means of understanding the behavior of quantum systems under a range of potential energies. In particular, over the past decade, theoretical studies have focused on adapting the Dunkl derivative to quantum mechanical problems. This approach merely seeks to generalize traditional quantum mechanical techniques through the utilization of differential-difference operators associated with finite reflection groups, thereby providing solutions that are dependent on parity. In this manuscript, we investigate the analytical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a harmonic oscillator with time-dependent mass and frequency, coupled with angular-dependent potential energy by utilizing the Dunkl derivatives. To obtain the solution, we employ the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant methodology. Our approach broadens the scope of quantum mechanical analyses, offering exact solutions and new insights into dynamic quantum systems under varying conditions.

Abstract:We have developed a new simple method to build the exact analytical expression of the eigenenergy as a function of the potential. The idea of our method is mainly based on the partitioning of the potential curve, solving the Schrödinger equation, realizing a discrete form of the energy quantification condition, and finally, deriving its integral form which permit to create a simple relation: Energy-potential. Our method has been applied to three examples: the well-known square well, the harmonic oscillators, and the Morse potential. Our non numerical method is more realistic, simpler, with high degree of accuracy, both satisfactory and not computationally complicated, and applicable for any forms of potential. Our results agree very well with the preceding ones.

Abstract:The inverse power method is a numerical algorithm to obtain the eigenvectors of a matrix. In this work, we develop an iteration algorithm, based on the inverse power method, to numerically solve the Schrödinger equation that couples an arbitrary number of components. Such an algorithm can also be applied to the multi-body systems. To show the power and accuracy of this method, we also present an example of solving the Dirac equation under the presence of an external scalar potential and a constant magnetic field, with source code publicly available.

Abstract:We delve into the intricacies of the hyperbolic Pöschl–Teller potential, often referred to as the 2nd Pöschl–Teller potential (PTP), and explore its implications on the Schrödinger equation for arbitrary l state case. This exploration encompasses a comprehensive review of various methodologies employed in studying the exact solutions of the S wave scenario, along with approximations concerning the centrifugal term within the radial equation for the arbitrary l setup. Our investigation yields exact solutions for the quasi-exact arbitrary l state model. We achieve this by employing a novel approach rooted in Fuchsian differential equations, thereby presenting a potential solution for the S wave case as well. This innovative method holds promise, particularly in seeking solutions for the Schrödinger equation involving non-trivial potentials where exact solutions remain elusive.

Abstract:This paper gives a new perspective on how to solve the second-order linear differential equation written in normal form. Extending the argument of the potential to a complex number leads to solving exactly the Schrödinger equation when the potential is complex using the factorization method. This method leads to solving two Riccati nonlinear equations and by constructing the only possible superpotential, the factorization method gives the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in closed form for potentials satisfying the shape invariance property. Extending the potential to the complex argument has led to discovering new exactly solvable ones. In this first part, the basic superpotentials are divided into different groups, each group contains the superpotentials that share common terms. All of the already known solvable real potentials will fall into this category and are derived as special cases. This set of exactly solvable complexified potentials has already uncovered some of the properties of quantum mechanics, like the tunneling effect through the forbidden region, happening with high probabilities between multiwells, bound states in the continuum (BIC), and other properties. These results have potential applications in all fields of sciences, from physics, chemistry, biology, etc., where the eigenvalue problem plays an important role.

Abstract:We introduce a numerical method for the solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation with a smooth potential, based on its reformulation as a Volterra integral equation. We present versions of the method both for periodic boundary conditions, and for free space problems with compactly supported initial data and potential. A spatially uniform electric field may be included, making the solver applicable to simulations of light-matter interaction. The primary computational challenge in using the Volterra formulation is the application of a space-time history dependent integral operator. This may be accomplished by projecting the solution onto a set of Fourier modes, and updating their coefficients from one time step to the next by a simple recurrence. In the periodic case, the modes are those of the usual Fourier series, and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) is used to alternate between physical and frequency domain grids. In the free space case, the oscillatory behavior of the spectral Green's function leads us to use a set of complex-frequency Fourier modes obtained by discretizing a contour deformation of the inverse Fourier transform, and we develop a corresponding fast transform based on the FFT. Our approach is related to pseudo-spectral methods, but applied to an integral rather than the usual differential formulation. This has several advantages: it avoids the need for artificial boundary conditions, admits simple, inexpensive high-order implicit time marching schemes, and naturally includes time-dependent potentials. We present examples in one and two dimensions showing spectral accuracy in space and eighth-order accuracy in time for both periodic and free space problems.
One-dimension Periodic Potentials in Schrödinger Equation Solved by the Finite Difference Method

Abstract:The one-dimensional Kronig-Penney potential in the Schrödinger equation, a standard periodic potential in quantum mechanics textbooks known for generating band structures, is solved by using the finite difference method with periodic boundary conditions. This method significantly improves the eigenvalue accuracy compared to existing approaches such as the filter method. The effects of the width and height of the Kronig-Penney potential on the eigenvalues and wave functions are then analyzed. As the potential height increases, the variation of eigenvalues with the wave vector slows down. Additionally, for higher-order band structures, the magnitude of the eigenvalue significantly decreases with increasing potential width. Finally, the Dirac comb potential, a periodic $\delta$ potential, is examined using the present framework. This potential corresponds to the Kronig-Penney potential's width and height approaching zero and infinity, respectively. The numerical results obtained by the finite difference method for the Dirac comb potential are also perfectly consistent with the analytical solution.
