Abstract:A Boolean function is said to be correlation immune if its output leaks no information about its input values. Such functions have many applications in computer security practices including the construction of key stream generators from a set of shift registers. Finding methods for easy construction of correlation immune Boolean functions has been an active research area since the introduction of the notion by Siegenthaler. In this paper, we present several constructions of nonpalindromic correlation immune symmetric Boolean functions. Our methods involve finding binomial coefficient identities and obtaining new correlation immune functions from known correlation immune functions. We also consider the construction of higher order correlation immunity symmetric functions and propose a class of third order correlation immune symmetric functions on n variables, where n + 1(>= 9) is a perfect square.

Abstract:From the motivation of algebraic attacks to stream and block ciphers([1,2,7,13,14,15]), the concept of {\em algebraic immunity} (AI) was introduced in [21] and studied in [3,5,10,11,17,18,19,20,21]. High algebraic immunity is a necessary condition for resisting algebraic attacks. In this paper, we give some lower bounds on algebraic immunity of Boolean functions. The results are applied to give lower bounds on AI of symmetric Boolean functions and rotation symmetric Boolean functions. Some balanced rotation symmetric Boolean functions with their AI near the maximum possible value $\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil$ are constructed.

Abstract:Correlation immune Boolean functions play an important role in the implementation of efficient masking countermeasures for side-channel attacks in cryptography. In this paper, we investigate a method to construct correlation immune functions through families of mutually orthogonal cellular automata (MOCA). First, we show that the orthogonal array (OA) associated to a family of MOCA can be expanded to a binary OA of strength at least 2. To prove this result, we exploit the characterization of MOCA in terms of orthogonal labelings on de Bruijn graphs. Then, we use the resulting binary OA to define the support of a second-order correlation immune function. Next, we perform some computational experiments to construct all such functions up to $n=12$ variables, and observe that their correlation immunity order is actually greater, always at least 3. We conclude by discussing how these results open up interesting perspectives for future research, with respect to the search of new correlation-immune functions and binary orthogonal arrays.

Abstract:Boolean functions are important primitives in different domains of cryptology, complexity and coding theory. In this paper, we connect the tools from cryptology and complexity theory in the domain of Boolean functions with low polynomial degree and high sensitivity. It is well known that the polynomial degree of of a Boolean function and its resiliency are directly connected. Using this connection we analyze the polynomial degree-sensitivity values through the lens of resiliency, demonstrating existence and non-existence results of functions with low polynomial degree and high sensitivity on small number of variables (upto 10). In this process, borrowing an idea from complexity theory, we show that one can implement resilient Boolean functions on a large number of variables with linear size and logarithmic depth. Finally, we extend the notion of sensitivity to higher order and note that the existing construction idea of Nisan and Szegedy (1994) can provide only constant higher order sensitivity when aiming for polynomial degree of $n-\omega(1)$. In this direction, we present a construction with low ($n-\omega(1)$) polynomial degree and super-constant $\omega(1)$ order sensitivity exploiting Maiorana-McFarland constructions, that we borrow from construction of resilient functions. The questions we raise identify novel combinatorial problems in the domain of Boolean functions.

Abstract:Algebraic immunity has been proposed as an important property of Boolean functions. To resist algebraic attack, a Boolean function should possess high algebraic immunity. It is well known now that the algebraic immunity of an $n$-variable Boolean function is upper bounded by $\left\lceil {\frac{n}{2}} \right\rceil $. In this paper, for an odd integer $n$, we present a construction method which can efficiently generate a Boolean function of $n$ variables with maximum algebraic immunity, and we also show that any such function can be generated by this method. Moreover, the number of such Boolean functions is greater than $2^{2^{n-1}}$.

Abstract:To resist algebraic attack, a Boolean function should possess good algebraic immunity (AI). Several papers constructed symmetric functions with the maximum algebraic immunity $\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil $. In this correspondence we prove that for each odd $n$, there is exactly one trivial balanced $n$-variable symmetric Boolean function achieving the algebraic immunity $\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil $. And we also obtain a necessary condition for the algebraic normal form of a symmetric Boolean function with maximum algebraic immunity.

Abstract:In this paper, we put forward an efficient method to study the symmetric Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity on even number of variables. We obtain some powerful necessary conditions for symmetric Boolean functions to achieve high algebraic immunity by studying the weight support of some specific types of Boolean functions of low degrees. With these results, we prove that the algebraic immunity of a large class of symmetric correlation immune Boolean functions, namely the symmetric palindromic functions, is not high. Besides, we construct all symmetric Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity and give a description for those with submaximum algebraic immunity. We also determine the Hamming weight, degrees and nonlinearity of the symmetric Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a new bound tying together the effective length and the maximum correlation between the outputs of an arbitrary pair of Boolean functions which operate on two sequences of correlated random variables. We derive a new upper bound on the correlation between the outputs of these functions. The upper bound may find applications in problems in many areas which deal with common information. We build upon Witsenhausen's result on maximum correlation. The present upper bound takes into account the effective length of the Boolean functions in characterizing the correlation. We use the new bound to characterize the communication-cooperation tradeoff in multi-terminal communications. We investigate binary block-codes (BBC). A BBC is defined as a vector of Boolean functions. We consider an ensemble of BBCs which is randomly generated using single-letter distributions. We characterize the vector of dependency spectrums of these BBCs. We use this vector to bound the correlation between the outputs of two distributed BBCs. Finally, the upper bound is used to show that the large blocklength single-letter coding schemes studied in the literature are sub-optimal in various multi-terminal communication settings.

Abstract:Several factors (e.g., balancedness, good correlation immunity) are considered as important properties of Boolean functions for using in cryptographic primitives. A Boolean function is perfect algebraic immune if it is with perfect immunity against algebraic and fast algebraic attacks. There is an increasing interest in construction of Boolean function that is perfect algebraic immune combined with other characteristics, like resiliency. A resilient function is a balanced correlation-immune function. This paper uses bivariate representation of Boolean function and theory of finite field to construct a generalized and new class of Boolean functions on even variables by extending the Carlet-Feng functions. We show that the functions generated by this construction support cryptographic properties of 1-resiliency and (sub)optimal algebraic immunity and further propose the sufficient condition of achieving optimal algebraic immunity. Compared experimentally with Carlet-Feng functions and the functions constructed by the method of first-order concatenation existing in the literature on even (from 6 to 16) variables, these functions have better immunity against fast algebraic attacks. Implementation results also show that they are almost perfect algebraic immune functions.

Abstract:After the improvement by Courtois and Meier of the algebraic attacks on stream ciphers and the introduction of the related notion of algebraic immunity, several constructions of infinite classes of Boolean functions with optimum algebraic immunity have been proposed. All of them gave functions whose algebraic degrees are high enough for resisting the Berlekamp-Massey attack and the recent Rønjom-Helleseth attack, but whose nonlinearities either achieve the worst possible value (given by Lobanov's bound) or are slightly superior to it. Hence, these functions do not allow resistance to fast correlation attacks. Moreover, they do not behave well with respect to fast algebraic attacks. In this paper, we study an infinite class of functions which achieve an optimum algebraic immunity. We prove that they have an optimum algebraic degree and a much better nonlinearity than all the previously obtained infinite classes of functions. We check that, at least for small values of the number of variables, the functions of this class have in fact a very good nonlinearity and also a good behavior against fast algebraic attacks.

Abstract:This paper develops upper and lower bounds for the probability of Boolean functions by treating multiple occurrences of variables as independent and assigning them new individual probabilities. We call this approach dissociation and give an exact characterization of optimal oblivious bounds, i.e. when the new probabilities are chosen independent of the probabilities of all other variables. Our motivation comes from the weighted model counting problem (or, equivalently, the problem of computing the probability of a Boolean function), which is #P-hard in general. By performing several dissociations, one can transform a Boolean formula whose probability is difficult to compute, into one whose probability is easy to compute, and which is guaranteed to provide an upper or lower bound on the probability of the original formula by choosing appropriate probabilities for the dissociated variables. Our new bounds shed light on the connection between previous relaxation-based and model-based approximations and unify them as concrete choices in a larger design space. We also show how our theory allows a standard relational database management system (DBMS) to both upper and lower bound hard probabilistic queries in guaranteed polynomial time.

Abstract:In designing cryptographic Boolean functions, it is challenging to achieve at the same time the desirable features of algebraic immunity, balancedness, nonlinearity, and algebraic degree for necessary resistance against algebraic attack, correlation attack, Berlekamp–Massey attack, etc. This paper constructs balanced rotation symmetric Boolean functions on n variables where n=2p and p is an odd prime. We prove the construction has an optimal algebraic immunity and is of high nonlinearity. We check that, at least for those primes p which are not of the form of a power of two plus one, the algebraic degree of the construction achieves in fact the upper bound n−1.

Abstract:We consider Boolean functions f:{-1,1}^n->{-1,1} that are close to a sum of independent functions on mutually exclusive subsets of the variables. We prove that any such function is close to just a single function on a single subset. We also consider Boolean functions f:R^n->{-1,1} that are close, with respect to any product distribution over R^n, to a sum of their variables. We prove that any such function is close to one of the variables. Both our results are independent of the number of variables, but depend on the variance of f. I.e., if f is \epsilon*Var(f)-close to a sum of independent functions or random variables, then it is O(\epsilon)-close to one of the independent functions or random variables, respectively. We prove that this dependence on Var(f) is tight. Our results are a generalization of the Friedgut-Kalai-Naor Theorem [FKN'02], which holds for functions f:{-1,1}^n->{-1,1} that are close to a linear combination of uniformly distributed Boolean variables.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate on constructing cryptographically significant Boolean functions with n variables based on decompositions of the multiplicative group of the finite field F 2n of the form F 2n * = U × V, where U and V are cyclic subgroups of F 2n * satisfying (|U|, |V|) = 1. For positive integers s, m and n = 2 s m, we obtain classes of unbalanced functions with optimal algebraic immunity in the cases |U| = 2 m + 1, |V| = (2 n -1)/(2 m +1) and |U| = 2 m -1, |V| = (2 n -1)/(2 m -1), respectively, where in the latter case the optimal algebraic immunity is based on correctness of the Tu-Deng conjecture. Functions belonging to both classes can be modified to be balanced ones with (potentially) optimal algebraic immunity and optimal algebraic degree, and computer experiments show that they also have high nonlinearity and good immunity against fast algebraic attacks. As by-products, variants of the Tu-Deng conjecture and combinatorial results on binary strings in analogy to it are also obtained.
