Abstract:In this paper, we first establish an L-2-type Dolbeault isomorphism for logarithmic differential forms by Hrmander's L-2 estimates. By using this isomorphism and the construction of smooth Hermitian metrics, we obtain a number of new vanishing theorems for sheaves of logarithmic differential forms on compact Kahler manifolds with simple normal crossing divisors, which generalize several classical vanishing theorems, including Norimatsu's vanishing theorem, Girbau's vanishing theorem, Le Potier's vanishing theorem, and a version of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem.

Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:Cohesive modules give a dg-enhancement of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a complex manifold via superconnections. In this paper we discuss the deformation theory of cohesive modules on compact complex manifolds. This generalizes the deformation theory of holomorphic vector bundles and coherent sheaves. We also develop the theory of Kuranishi maps and obstructions of deformations of cohesive modules and give some examples of unobstructed deformations.

Abstract:Given a polynomial P of partial derivatives of the Kahler metric, expressed as a linear combination of directed multigraphs, we prove a simple criterion in terms of the coefficients for P to be an invariant polynomial, i.e. invariant under the transformation of coordinates. As applications, we prove an explicit composition formula for covariant differential operators under a canonical basis, also known as invariant differential operators in the case of bounded symmetric domains. We also prove a general explicit formula of star products on Kahler manifolds.

Abstract:Huybrechts and Thomas recently constructed relative obstruction theory of objects of the derived category of coherent sheaves over smooth projective family. In this paper, we use this construction to obtain the absolute deformation-obstruction theory of the pair (X, E), with X smooth projective scheme and E perfect complex, and show that the obstruction theories for E, (X,E), and X fit into exact triangle as derived objects on the moduli space.

Abstract:Inspired by a recent work of D. Wei--S. Zhu on the extension of closed complex differential forms and Voisin's usage of the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-lemma, we obtain several new theorems of deformation invariance of Hodge numbers and reprove the local stabilities of $p$-Kähler structures with the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-property. Our approach is more concerned with the $d$-closed extension by means of the exponential operator $e^{\iota_\varphi}$. Furthermore, we prove the local stabilities of transversely $p$-Kähler structures with mild $\partial\bar{\partial}$-property by adapting the power series method to the foliated case, which strengthens the works of A. El Kacimi Alaoui--B. Gmira and P. Raźny on that of the transversely Kähler foliations with homologically orientability. We observe that a transversely Kähler foliation, even without homologically orientability, also satisfies the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-property. So even when $p=1$ (transversely Kähler), our results are new as we can drop the assumption in question on the initial foliation. Several theorems on the deformation invariance of basic Hodge/Bott--Chern numbers with mild $\partial\bar{\partial}$-properties are also presented.

Abstract:Abstract For any asymptotically dynamically convex contact manifold $Y$, we show that $SH_{\ast }(W)=0$ is a property independent of the choice of topologically simple (i.e., $c_1(W)=0$ and $\pi _{1}(Y)\rightarrow \pi _1(W)$ is injective) Liouville filling $W$. In particular, if $Y$ is the boundary of a flexible Weinstein domain, then any topologically simple Liouville filling $W$ has vanishing symplectic homology. As a consequence, we answer a question of Lazarev partially: a contact manifold $Y$ admitting flexible fillings determines the integral cohomology of all the topologically simple Liouville fillings of $Y$. The vanishing result provides an obstruction to flexible fillability. As an application, we show that all Brieskorn manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$ cannot be filled by flexible Weinstein manifolds.
Perverse sheaves on varieties with large fundamental groups

Abstract:We conjecture that any perverse sheaf on a compact aspherical Kähler manifold has non-negative Euler characteristic. This extends the Singer-Hopf conjecture in the Kähler setting. We verify the stronger conjecture when the manifold X has non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. We also show that the conjecture holds when X is projective and in possession of a faithful semi-simple rigid local system. The first result is proved by expressing the Euler characteristic as an intersection number involving the characteristic cycle, and then using the curvature conditions to deduce non-negativity. For the second result, we have that the local system underlies a complex variation of Hodge structure. We then deduce the desired inequality from the curvature properties of the image of the period map.

Obstructions for exact submanifolds with symplectic applications

Abstract:Suppose $X^{N}$ is a closed oriented manifold, $\alpha \in H^*(X;\mathbb{R})$ is a cohomology class, and $Z \in H_{N-k}(X)$ is an integral homology class. We ask the following question: is there an oriented embedded submanifold $Y^{N-k} \subset X$ with homology class $Z$ such that $\alpha|_Y = 0 \in H^*(Y;\mathbb{R})$? In this article, we provide a family of computable obstructions to the existence of such 'exact' submanifolds in a given homology class which arise from studying formal deformations of the de Rham complex. In the final section, we apply these obstructions to prove that the following symplectic manifolds admit no non-separating exact (a fortiori contact-type) hypersurfaces: Kähler manifolds, symplectically uniruled manifolds, and the Kodaira--Thurston manifold.

Abstract:Reformulations of Donaldson's "tamed to compatible" question are obtained in terms of spaces of exact forms on a compact almost complex manifold $(M^{2n},J)$. In dimension 4, we show that $J$ admits a compatible symplectic form if and only if $J$ admits tamed symplectic forms with arbitrarily given $J$-anti-invariant parts. Some observations about the cohomology of $J$-modified de Rham complexes are also made.

Abstract:This paper gives the first description of derived monodromy on the stringy Kähler moduli space (SKMS) for a general irreducible flopping curve C in a 3-fold X with mild singularities. We do this by constructing two new infinite helices: the first consists of sheaves supported on C, and the second comprises vector bundles in a tubular neighbourhood. We prove that these helices determine the simples and projectives in iterated tilts of the category of perverse sheaves, and that all objects in the first helix induce a twist autoequivalence for X. We show that these new derived symmetries, along with established ones, induce the full monodromy on the SKMS. The helices have many further applications. We (1) prove representability of noncommutative deformations of all successive thickenings of a length l flopping curve, via tilting theory, (2) control the representing objects, characterise when they are not commutative, and their central quotients, and (3) give new and sharp theoretical lower bounds on Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for a curve of length l. When X is smooth and resolves an affine base, we furthermore (4) prove that the second helix classifies all tilting reflexive sheaves on X, and thus that (5) all noncommutative crepant resolutions arise from tilting bundles on X.

Abstract:It is well-known that the deformation problem of a compact coisotropic submanifold $C$ in a symplectic manifold is obstructed in general. We show that it becomes unobstructed if one only allows coisotropic deformations whose characteristic foliation is diffeomorphic to that of $C$. This extends an unobstructedness result in the setting of integral coisotropic submanifolds due to Ruan.

Abstract:We provide proofs of two theorems stated by Massey in 1961, concerning the obstructions to finding complex structures on real vector bundles. In addition, we determine the second obstruction to a complex structure on a rank six orientable real vector bundle. The obstructions are fractional parts of integral Stiefel-Whitney classes, and a fourth of an appropriate combination of Pontryagin, Chern, and Euler classes.

Abstract:The behavior of spin diffusion in doped semiconductors is shown to be qualitatively different than in undoped (intrinsic) ones. Whereas a spin packet in an intrinsic semiconductor must be a multiple-band disturbance, involving inhomogeneous distributions of both electrons and holes, in a doped semiconductor a single-band disturbance is possible. For n-doped nonmagnetic semiconductors the enhancement of diffusion due to a degenerate electron sea in the conduction band is much larger for these single-band spin packets than for charge packets, and can exceed an order of magnitude at low temperatures even for equilibrium dopings as small as 10^16 cm^-3. In n-doped ferromagnetic and semimagnetic semiconductors the motion of spin packets polarized antiparallel to the equilibrium carrier spin polarization is predicted to be an order of magnitude faster than for parallel polarized spin packets. These results are reversed for p-doped semiconductors.
