Abstract:In this paper we consider the mean field limit and non-relativistic limit of relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell particle system to Vlasov-Poisson equation. With the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell particle system being a starting point, we carry out the estimates (with respect to $N$ and $c$) between the characteristic equation of both Vlasov-Maxwell particle model and Vlasov-Poisson equation, where the probabilistic method is exploited. In the last step, we take both large $N$ limit and non-relativistic limit (meaning $c$ tending to infinity) to close the argument.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the transformation from the relativistic Vlasov - Maxwell particle system to the Vlasov - Poisson equation by combining the mean - field limit and the non - relativistic limit. Specifically, starting from the relativistic Vlasov - Maxwell particle system, the authors estimate the difference between the characteristic equation of this system and the Vlasov - Poisson equation, and use probabilistic methods to close the argument under the large \(N\) limit (that is, the number of particles tends to infinity) and the non - relativistic limit (that is, the speed of light \(c\) tends to infinity), thus proving the convergence of the solutions of the two systems under specific conditions.
### Background of the Paper
- **Vlasov - Maxwell Equation**: Describes the time evolution of relativistic plasmas, taking into account the relativistic effects of electromagnetic fields.
- **Vlasov - Poisson Equation**: Describes the time evolution of non - relativistic plasmas, ignoring the relativistic effects of electromagnetic fields.
- **Mean - Field Limit**: When the number of particles \(N\) tends to infinity, the behavior of a single particle can be described by a continuous distribution function.
- **Non - Relativistic Limit**: When the speed of light \(c\) tends to infinity, the relativistic effects become insignificant and the system behavior tends to be non - relativistic.
### Main Contributions
1. **Combination of Two Limits**: For the first time, the paper attempts to consider the mean - field limit and the non - relativistic limit simultaneously and study how the relativistic Vlasov - Maxwell particle system transforms into the Vlasov - Poisson equation under these limits.
2. **Application of Probabilistic Methods**: Use probabilistic methods to estimate the characteristic equation, providing a new technical means.
3. **Rigorous Proof of Convergence**: Through detailed mathematical derivations, it is proved that in the case of large \(N\) and large \(c\), the difference between the solution of the relativistic Vlasov - Maxwell particle system and the solution of the Vlasov - Poisson equation approaches zero.
### Key Results
- **Theorem 2.1**: Under specific initial conditions, it is proved that the solutions of the Vlasov - Poisson system and the regularized Vlasov - Maxwell system are unique within a certain time interval, and the difference estimate between the two solutions is given.
- **Theorem 3.1**: By introducing an intermediate system, it is proved that the solution of the regularized Vlasov - Maxwell system converges to the solution of the Vlasov - Poisson equation under the large \(N\) limit.
- **Theorem 3.2**: It is further proved that under the non - relativistic limit, the difference between the solution of the regularized Vlasov - Maxwell system and the solution of the Vlasov - Poisson equation approaches zero.
- **Theorem 3.3**: Combining the above two limits, it is proved that in the case of large \(N\) and large \(c\), the difference between the solution of the relativistic Vlasov - Maxwell particle system and the solution of the Vlasov - Poisson equation approaches zero.
### Conclusion
Through rigorous mathematical analysis, this paper successfully proves that under the limits of large \(N\) and large \(c\), the solution of the relativistic Vlasov - Maxwell particle system can converge to the solution of the Vlasov - Poisson equation. This result provides an important theoretical basis for understanding the behavior of plasmas under different limit conditions.
