Abstract:This work gives an expository account of certain applications of microlocal analysis in three geometric inverse problems. We will discuss the geodesic X-ray transform inverse problem, the Gelfand problem for the wave equation on a Riemannian manifold, and the Calderón problem for the Laplace equation on a Riemannian manifold.

Abstract:We consider a class of inverse problems defined by a nonlinear mapping from parameter or model functions to the data, where the inverse mapping is Holder continuous with respect to appropriate Banach spaces. We analyze a nonlinear Landweber iteration and prove local convergence and convergence rates with respect to an appropriate distance measure. Opposed to the standard analysis of the nonlinear Landweber iteration, we do not assume source and nonlinearity conditions, but this analysis is based solely on the Holder continuity of the inverse mapping.

In various fields of science, engineering, medicine, and industry, there arises a need to reconstruct information about unknown entities that cannot be directly observed. Examples include medical imaging techniques such as X-ray CT and optical tomography. Indeed, the mathematics of inverse problems has often originated from challenges posed by other fields. Inverse problems are often ill-posed and solutions are unstable. In this lecture, we will explore methods to solve such inverse problems.

Applications of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem in the Calderón problem

Abstract:We give examples on the use of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem in inverse problems. We show uniqueness in the linearized Calderón problem on holomorphically separable Kähler manifolds, and in the Calderón problem for nonlinear equations on conformally transversally anisotropic manifolds. We also study the holomorphic separability condition in terms of plurisubharmonic functions. The Stone-Weierstrass theorem allows us to generalize and simplify earlier results. It also makes it possible to circumvent the use of complex geometrical optics solutions and inversion of explicit transforms in certain cases.

On non-locality in the Calculus of Variations

Abstract:Non-locality is being intensively studied in various PDE-contexts and in variational problems. The numerical approximation also looks challenging, as well as the application of these models to Continuum Mechanics and Image Analysis, among other areas. Even though there is a growing body of deep and fundamental knowledge about non-locality, for variational principles there are still very basic questions that have not been addressed so far. Taking some of these as a motivation, we describe a general perspective on distinct classes of non-local variational principles setting a program for the analysis of this kind of problems. We start such program with the simplest problem possible: that of scalar, uni-dimensional cases, under a particular class of non-locality. Even in this simple initial scenario, one finds quite unexpected facts to the point that our intuition about local, classic problems can no longer guide us for these new problems. There are three main issues worth highlighting, in the particular situation treated: $\bullet$ natural underlying spaces involve different non-local types of derivatives as, for instance, fractional Sobolev spaces; $\bullet$ no convexity of integrands is required for existence of minimizers; $\bullet$ optimality is formulated in terms of quite special integral equations rather than differential equations. We are thus able to provide some specific answers to the initial questions that motivated our investigation. In subsequent papers, we will move on to consider the higher dimensional situation driven by the possibility that no convexity or quasiconvexity might be involved in weak lower semicontinuity in a full vector, higher dimensional situation.

Abstract:This book aims to provide a brief overview of recent advancements in the theory of inverse problems for stochastic partial differential equations. In order to keep the content concise, we will only discuss the inverse problems of two typical classes of stochastic partial differential equations: second-order stochastic parabolic equations and secondorder stochastic hyperbolic equations. The main tool for studying these inverse problem is Carleman estimate. We do not intend to pursue any general treatment of the Carleman estimates themselves and choose direct arguments based on basic stochastic calculus, rather than more general sophisticated methods. As this field is still developing and there are many challenging issues to be addressed, the purpose of this book is not to serve as a comprehensive summary, but rather to spark interest and encourage further exploration in this area among readers. We prefer to present results that, from our perspective, include fresh and promising ideas. In cases where a complete mathematical theory is lacking, we only provide the available results. We do not intend for the current book to be encyclopedic in any sense, and the references are limited.

Abstract:This is (raw) lecture notes of the course read on 6th European intensive course on Complex Analysis (Coimbra, Portugal) in 2000. Our purpose is to describe a general framework for generalizations of the complex analysis. As a consequence a classification scheme for different generalizations is obtained. The framework is based on wavelets (coherent states) in Banach spaces generated by ``admissible'' group representations. Reduced wavelet transform allows naturally describe in abstract term main objects of an analytical function theory: the Cauchy integral formula, the Hardy and Bergman spaces, the Cauchy-Riemann equation, and the Taylor expansion. Among considered examples are classical analytical function theories (one complex variables, several complex variables, Clifford analysis, Segal-Bargmann space) as well as new function theories which were developed within our framework (function theory of hyperbolic type, Clifford version of Segal-Bargmann space). We also briefly discuss applications to the operator theory (functional calculus) and quantum mechanics.

Some applications of microlocalization for local complete intersection subvarieties

Abstract:Saito's microlocalization construction has been used to great effect in understanding hypersurface singularities. In this paper, we introduce what we believe to be a suitable analogue of the microlocalization construction for local complete intersection subvarieties. As evidence, we relate our construction to Saito's in the codimension one case. Moreover, we use this construction to study various natural questions concerning the minimal exponent of LCI subvarieties. We show that the minimal exponent agrees with the smallest Bernstein-Sato root, which was expected to be true. We also show that, in the isolated complete intersection singularities case, the minimal exponent agrees with the smallest non-zero spectral number, as defined by Dimca, Maisonobe and Saito. As applications of these results, we prove constructibility of the minimal exponent along certain Whitney stratifications and we prove that the spectrum (hence, the minimal exponent) is constant in equisingular families of ICIS varieties, in the sense of Gaffney.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 3, Page 4185-4222, June 2024. We present a systematic study on a class of nonlocal integral functionals for functions defined on a bounded domain and the naturally induced function spaces. The function spaces are equipped with a seminorm depending on finite differences weighted by a position-dependent function, which leads to heterogeneous localization on the domain boundary. We show the existence of minimizers for nonlocal variational problems with classically defined, local boundary constraints, together with the variational convergence of these functionals to classical counterparts in the localization limit. This program necessitates a thorough study of the nonlocal space; we demonstrate properties such as a Meyers–Serrin theorem, trace inequalities, and compact embeddings, which are facilitated by new studies of boundary-localized convolution operators.

Abstract:Several different problems make the study of the so called Lyapunov type inequalities of great interest, both in pure and applied mathematics. Although the original historical motivation was the study of the stability properties of the Hill equation (which applies to many problems in physics and engineering), other questions that arise in systems at resonance, crystallography, isoperimetric problems, Rayleigh type quotients, etc. lead to the study of $L_p$ Lyapunov inequalities ($1\leq p\leq \infty$) for differential equations. In this work we review some recent results on these kinds of questions which can be formulated as optimal control problems. In the case of Ordinary Differential Equations, we consider periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions at higher eigenvalues and by using a more accurate version of the Sturm separation theory, an explicit optimal result is obtained. Then, we establish Lyapunov inequalities for systems of equations. To this respect, a key point is the characterization of the best $L^p$ Lyapunov constant for the scalar given problem, as a minimum of some especial (constrained or unconstrained) variational problems defined in appropriate subsets of the usual Sobolev spaces. For Partial Differential Equations on a domain $\Omega \subset \real^N$, it is proved that the relation between the quantities $p$ and $N/2$ plays a crucial role in order to obtain nontrivial $L_p$ Lyapunov type inequalities (which are called Sobolev inequalities by many authors). This fact shows a deep difference with respect to the ordinary case. Combining the linear results with Schauder fixed point theorem, we can obtain some new results about the existence and uniqueness of solutions for resonant nonlinear problems for ODE or PDE, both in the scalar case and in the case of systems of equations

On the local solvability and stability of the partial inverse problems for the non-self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville operators with a discontinuity

Abstract:In this work, we study the inverse spectral problems for the Sturm-Liouville operators on [0,1] with complex coefficients and a discontinuity at $x=a\in(0,1)$. Assume that the potential on (a,1) and some parameters in the discontinuity and boundary conditions are given. We recover the potential on (0,a) and the other parameters from the eigenvalues. This is the so-called partial inverse problem. The local solvability and stability of the partial inverse problems are obtained for $a\in(0,1)$, in which the error caused by the given partial potential is considered. As a by-product, we also obtain two new uniqueness theorems for the partial inverse problem.

Abstract:Minimal surfaces are among the most natural objects in Differential Geometry, and have been studied for the past 250 years ever since the pioneering work of Lagrange. The subject is characterized by a profound beauty, but perhaps even more remarkably, minimal surfaces (or minimal submanifolds) have encountered striking applications in other fields, like three-dimensional topology, mathematical physics, conformal geometry, among others. Even though it has been the subject of intense activity, many basic open problems still remain. In this lecture we will survey recent advances in this area and discuss some future directions. We will give special emphasis to the variational aspects of the theory as well as to the applications to other fields.
