Abstract:In a directional modulation (DM) network, the issues of security and privacy have taken on an increasingly important role. Since the power allocation of confidential message and artificial noise will make a constructive effect on the system performance, it is important to jointly consider the relationship between the beamforming vectors and the power allocation (PA) factors. To maximize the secrecy rate (SR), an alternating iterative structure (AIS) between the beamforming and PA is proposed. With only two or three iterations, it can rapidly converge to its rate ceil. Simulation results indicate that the SR performance of proposed AIS is much better than the null-space projection (NSP) based PA strategy in the medium and large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions, especially when the number of antennas at the DM transmitter is small.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problem of how to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) by optimizing the beamforming vector and power allocation factor in the directional modulation (DM) network. Specifically, the paper proposes an alternating iterative structure (AIS) for iterative optimization between beamforming and power allocation to improve the secrecy performance of the system. ### Background and Problem Description In wireless communication systems, especially in next - generation wireless systems (such as 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), etc.), security and privacy protection are becoming increasingly important. Directional modulation, as a green and efficient transmission scheme, provides security through its directional characteristics and is suitable for the line - of - propagation (LoP) channel. However, in order to further improve the secrecy performance of the system, the relationship between the beamforming vector and the power allocation factor needs to be comprehensively considered. ### Main Contributions of the Paper 1. **Problem Definition**: - The secrecy rate \(R_s\) is an important indicator for measuring system security, which is defined as the non - negative part of the difference between the achievable rate \(R(\theta_b)\) of the legitimate receiver (Bob) and the achievable rate \(R(\theta_e)\) of the eavesdropper (Eve), that is: \[ R_s=\max\{0, R(\theta_b)-R(\theta_e)\} \] - Among them, \(R(\theta_b)\) and \(R(\theta_e)\) respectively represent the achievable rates from the sender (Alice) to Bob and Eve, and can be expressed as: \[ R(\theta_b)=\log_2\left(1 + \frac{\beta P_s|h^H(\theta_b)v_b|^2}{(1 - \beta)P_s|h^H(\theta_b)v_{AN}|^2+\sigma^2}\right) \] \[ R(\theta_e)=\log_2\left(1 + \frac{\beta P_s|h^H(\theta_e)v_b|^2}{(1 - \beta)P_s|h^H(\theta_e)v_{AN}|^2+\sigma^2}\right) \] 2. **Optimization Problem**: - The objective is to maximize the secrecy rate \(R_s\) by optimizing the beamforming vector \(v_b\), the artificial noise projection vector \(v_{AN}\) and the power allocation parameter \(\beta\) under the given total transmit power \(P_s\). The optimization problem can be expressed as: \[ \max_{v_b, v_{AN}, \beta}R_s(\beta, v_{AN}, v_b) \] \[ \text{s.t.}\quad0\leq\beta\leq1,\quad v_b^H v_b = 1,\quad v_{AN}^H v_{AN}=1 \] 3. **Solution**: - An alternating iterative structure (AIS) is proposed, and the optimization is carried out through the following steps: 1. **Beamforming Vector Optimization**: For the given \(v_{AN}\) and \(\beta\), design \(v_b\). 2. **Artificial Noise Projection Vector Optimization**: For the given \(v_b\) and \(\beta\), design \(v_{AN}\). 3. **Power Allocation Parameter Optimization**: For the given \(v_b\) and \(v_{AN}\)
