Abstract:Research on container loading problems has been proved effective in increasing the filling rate of containers in different practical situations. However, the broader logistic context might pressure the loading process, leading to sub-optimal solutions. Some facilities like cross-docks have reduced storage space which might force early loading activities. We propose a container loading problem which accounts for this limited storage by explicitly considering the schedule of arrival for the boxes and the departure time of the trucks. Also, we design a framework which handles the geometric and temporal characteristics of the problem separately, enabling the use of methods found in the literature for solving the extended problem. Our framework can handle uncertainty in the schedule and be used to quantify the impact of delays on capacity utilization and departure time of trucks.
Optimization and Control
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to maximize the loading volume of containers in a cross - docking environment while considering the arrival time of boxes and the departure time limits of trucks. Specifically, the paper proposes a Container Loading Problem with Time Availability Constraints (CLPTAC), aiming to select a set of boxes to maximize the loading volume and minimize the time when trucks or containers are ready. In addition, this research also pays special attention to the arrival time schedule of boxes. Considering that these times may be uncertain, a stochastic dynamic programming framework is proposed to deal with this uncertainty and evaluate the impact of delays on capacity utilization and truck departure times. In the paper, deterministic and stochastic versions of CLPTAC are defined, where the stochastic version assumes that only the probability distribution of box arrival times is known. To solve this problem, the authors design a dynamic programming framework that can handle the time and geometric characteristics of the problem separately, thus allowing the use of existing methods in the literature to solve the extended problem. In this way, the framework can not only deal with the uncertainty of box arrival times but also be used to quantify the impact of delays on system performance. In summary, this paper mainly solves the container loading optimization problem under limited storage space and early - scheduling pressure, especially in the cross - docking environment, how to balance the requirements of high loading rate and low departure time.
