Abstract:We give an interpretation of the Ω deformed B -model that leads naturally to the generalized holomorphic anomaly equations. Direct integration of the latter calculates topological amplitudes of four-dimensional rigid N = 2 theories explicitly in general Ω-backgrounds in terms of modular forms. These amplitudes encode the refined BPS spectrum as well as new gravitational couplings in the effective action of N = 2 supersymmetric theories. The rigid N = 2 field theories we focus on are the conformal rank one N = 2 Seiberg–Witten theories. The failure of holomorphicity is milder in the conformal cases, but fixing the holomorphic ambiguity is only possible upon mass deformation. Our formalism applies irrespectively of whether a Lagrangian formulation exists. In the class of rigid N = 2 theories arising from compactifications on local Calabi–Yau manifolds, we consider the theory of local ℙ^2 . We calculate motivic Donaldson–Thomas invariants for this geometry and make predictions for generalized Gromov–Witten invariants at the orbifold point.
Deformed Double Current Algebras, Matrix Extended $\mathcal W_{\infty}$ Algebras, Coproducts, and Intertwiners from the M2-M5 Intersection

Abstract:We study the algebraic structures which govern the deformation of supersymmetric intersections of M2 and M5 branes. The universal algebras on M2 and M5 branes are deformed double current algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_K$ and $\mathfrak{gl}_K$-extended $\mathcal{W}_{\infty}$-algebra respectively. We give a new presentation of the deformed double current algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_K$, and we give a rigorous mathematical construction of the $\mathfrak{gl}_K$-extended $\mathcal{W}_{\infty}$-algebra. A new presentation of the affine Yangian of $\mathfrak{gl}_K$ is also obtained. We construct various coproducts of these algebras, which are expected to encode the fusions of defects in twisted M-theory. The matrix extended Miura operators are identified as intertwiners in certain bimodules of these algebras.

Abstract:We determine the mathematical structures which govern the $\Omega$ deformation of supersymmetric intersections of M2 and M5 branes. We find that the supersymmetric intersections govern many aspects of the theory of W-algebras, including degenerate modules, the Miura transform and Coulomb gas constructions. We give an algebraic interpretation of the Pandharipande-Thomas box counting in $\mathbb{C}^3$.

Abstract:I study the deformation of the topological string by $\bar\Omega$, the complex conjugate of the $\Omega$-deformation. Namely, I identify $\bar\Omega$ in terms of a physical state in the string spectrum and verify that the deformed Yang-Mills and ADHM actions are reproduced. This completes the study initiated recently [1] where we show that $\bar\Omega$ decouples from the one-loop topological amplitudes in heterotic string theory. Similarly to the N=2* deformation, I show that the quadratic terms in the effective action play a crucial role in obtaining the correct realisation of the full $\Omega$-deformation. Finally, I comment on the differences between the graviphoton and the $\Omega$-deformation in general and discuss possible $\bar\Omega$ remnants at the boundary of the string moduli space.

Abstract:In this note, we study the deformation of the topological string by $\bar\Omega$. Namely, adopting the perturbative string amplitudes approach, we identify the $\bar\Omega$-deformation in terms of a physical state in the sting spectrum. We calculate the topological amplitudes $F_g$ in heterotic string theory in the presence of the latter. In particular, we show that it is crucial to include quadratic terms in the effective action in order for $\bar\Omega$ to decouple. It turns out that this decoupling happens at the full string level, suggesting that this holds non-perturbatively.

Abstract:In the presence of an $\Omega$-deformation, local operators generate a chiral algebra in the topological-holomorphic twist of a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetric field theory. We show that for a unitary $\mathcal{N} = 2$ superconformal field theory, the chiral algebra thus defined is isomorphic to the one introduced by Beem et al. Our definition of the chiral algebra covers nonconformal theories with insertions of suitable surface defects.

Abstract:We study the 3-algebraic structure involved in the recently shown M2-branes worldvolume gauge theories. We first extend an arbitrary finite dimensional 3-algebra into an infinite dimensional 3-algebra by adding a mode number to each generator. A unique central charge in the algebra of gauge transformations appears naturally in this extension. We present an infinite dimensional extended 3-algebra with a general metric and also a different extension with a Lorentzian metric. We then study ordinary finite dimensional 3-algebras with different signatures of the metric, focusing on the cases with a negative eigenvalue and the cases with a zero eigenvalue. In the latter cases we present a new algebra, whose corresponding theory is a decoupled abelian gauge theory together with a free theory with global gauge symmetry, and there is no negative kinetic term from this algebra.

Abstract:We extend the direct integration method of the holomorphic anomaly equations to general Ω backgrounds ǫ1 6= −ǫ2 for pure SU(2) N=2 Super-Yang-Mills theory and topological string theory on non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. We find that an extension of the holomorphic anomaly equation, modularity and boundary conditions provided by the perturbative terms as well as by the gap condition at the conifold are sufficient to solve the generalized theory in the above cases. In particular we use the method to solve the topological string for the general Ω backgrounds on non-compact toric Calabi-Yau spaces. The conifold boundary condition follows from that the N=2 Schwinger-Loop calculation with BPS states coupled to a self-dual and an anti-self-dual field strength. Abstract:We review recent work [1, 2] on obtaining a realisation of the $\Omega$-background in terms of a special series of higher-derivative generalised F-terms in the effective $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity action. We discuss the motivation behind the identification of these couplings, their relation to the Nekrasov partition function and connect them to a worldsheet approach towards the refined topological string. Abstract:In this paper we apply the thermodynamics method to investigate the holographic pictures for the BTZ black hole, the spacelike and the null warped black holes in three-dimensional topologically massive gravity (TMG) and new massive gravity (NMG). Even though there are higher derivative terms in these theories, the thermodynamics method is still effective. It gives consistent results with the ones obtained by using asymptotical symmetry group (ASG) analysis. In doing the ASG analysis we develop a brute-force realization of the Barnich-Brandt-Compere formalism with Mathematica code, which also allows us to calculate the masses and the angular momenta of the black holes. In particular, we propose the warped AdS3/CFT2 correspondence in the new massive gravity, which states that quantum gravity in the warped spacetime could holographically dual to a two-dimensional CFT with $ {c_R}={c_L}=\frac{24 }{{Gm{\beta^2}\sqrt{{2\left( {21-4{\beta^2}} \right)}}}} $ .
$T \overline T$-Deformations of Holographic Warped CFTs

Abstract:We explore $T \overline T$ deformations of Warped Conformal Field Theories (WCFTs) in two dimensions as examples of $T\overline T$ deformed non-relativistic quantum field theories. WCFTs are quantum field theories with a Virasoro$\times$U(1) Kac-Moody symmetry. We compute the deformed symmetry algebra of a $T\overline T$ deformed holographic WCFT, using the asymptotic symmetries of AdS$_3$ with $T \overline T$ deformed Compére, Song and Strominger (CSS) boundary conditions. The U(1) Kac-Moody symmetry survives provided one allows the boundary metric to transform under the asymptotic symmetry. The Virasoro sector remains but is now deformed and no longer chiral.

Abstract:We analyse the geometry of generic Minkowski $\mathcal{N}=1$, $D=4$ flux compactifications in string theory, the default backgrounds for string model building. In M-theory they are the natural string theoretic extensions of $\mathrm{G}_2$ holonomy manifolds. In type II theories, they extend the notion of Calabi--Yau geometry and include the class of flux backgrounds based on generalised complex structures first considered by Graña et al. (GMPT). Using $\mathrm{E}_{7(7)}\times\mathbb{R}^+$ generalised geometry we show that these compactifications are characterised by an $\mathrm{SU}(7)\subset\mathrm{E}_{7(7)}$ structure defining an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent space, and with a vanishing moment map, corresponding to the action of the diffeomorphism and gauge symmetries of the theory. The Kähler potential on the space of structures defines a natural extension of Hitchin's $\mathrm{G}_2$ functional. Using this framework we are able to count, for the first time, the massless scalar moduli of GMPT solutions in terms of generalised geometry cohomology groups. It also provides an intriguing new perspective on the existence of $G_{2}$ manifolds, suggesting possible connections to Geometrical Invariant Theory and stability.

On the universal exceptional structure of world-volume theories in string and M-theory

Abstract:A universal structure of world-volume theories of half-BPS branes in string and M-theory in terms of exceptional generalised geometry is observed. Previous constructions are extended in two ways: from internal $d$-dimensional space to full 11- or 10-dimensional spacetimes, by coupling to the tensor hierarchy gauge fields, and from $E_{d(d)}$ with $d\leq 6$ to $E_{7(7)}$ and $E_{8(8)}$. This is done by a clarification of the role of the tensor hierarchy and its end in the context of brane world-volume theories. The exceptional structure of the gauged $\sigma$-model of the Kaluza-Klein monopole is provided as a new example.

Abstract:We investigate supervised learning in neural networks. We consider a multi-layered feed-forward network with back propagation. We find that the network of small-world connectivity reduces the learning error and learning time when compared to the networks of regular or random connectivity. Our study has potential applications in the domain of data-mining, image processing, speech recognition, and pattern recognition.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of non-compact backgrounds of Type IIB string theory preserving eight supercharges by combining S-folds and non-perturbative 7-branes wrapping orbifolds, and study the four-dimensional superconformal field theories arising at low energy on $D3$-branes probing them. We draw a precise correspondence between this setup and the torus compactification of six-dimensional orbi-instanton theories with a Stiefel-Whitney twist, and use it to determine the main features of such strongly-coupled systems, like central charges, spectra of Coulomb-branch operators, networks of Higgs-branch flows. Finally, with the aim to improve our understanding of the landscape of $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories, and possibly to extend their classification beyond rank two, we provide a detailed catalogue of all the rank-three theories that our framework gives access to.

Abstract:A bstract We initiate a study of the holographic duals of a class of four-dimensional = 2 superconformal field theories that are engineered by wrapping M5-branes on a sphere with an irregular puncture. These notably include the strongly-coupled field theories of Argyres-Douglas type. Our solutions are obtained in 7d gauged supergravity, where they take the form of a warped product of AdS 5 and a "half-spindle." The irregular puncture is modeled by a localized M5-brane source in the internal space of the gravity duals. Our solutions feature a realization of supersymmetry that is distinct from the usual topological twist, as well as an interesting Stückelberg mechanism involving the gauge field associated to a generator of the isometry algebra of the internal space. We check the proposed duality by computing the holographic central charge, the flavor symmetry central charge, and the dimensions of various supersymmetric probe M2-branes, and matching these with the dual Argyres-Douglas field theories. Furthermore, we compute the large- N 't Hooft anomalies of the field theories using anomaly inflow methods in M-theory, and find perfect agreement with the proposed duality.

Abstract:We discuss issues related to orientifolds and the brane realization for gauge theories with orthogonal and symplectic groups. We specifically discuss the case of theories with (hidden) global SO(2n) symmetry, from three to six dimensions. We analyze mirror symmetry for three dimensional N=4 gauge theories, Brane Box Models and six-dimensional gauge theories. We also discuss the issue of T-duality for D_n space-time singularities. Stuck D branes on ON^0 planes play an interesting role.

On the 4d/3d/2d view of the SCFT/VOA correspondence

Abstract:We start with the SCFT/VOA correspondence formulated in the Omega-background approach, and connect it to the boundary VOA in 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ theories and chiral algebras of 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ theories. This is done using the dimensional reduction of the 4d theory on the topologically twisted and Omega-deformed cigar, performed in two steps. This paves the way for many more interesting questions, and we offer quite a few. We also use this approach to explain some older observations on the TQFTs produced from the generalized Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories reduced on the circle with a discrete twist. In particular, we argue that many AD theories with trivial Higgs branch, upon reduction on $S^1$ with the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ twist (where $\mathbb{Z}_N$ is a global symmetry of the given AD theory), result in the rank-0 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFTs, which have been a subject of recent studies. A generic AD theory, by the same logic, leads to a 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFT with zero-dimensional Coulomb branch (and suggests that there are a lot of them). Our construction therefore puts various empirical observations on the firm ground, such as, among other things, the match between the 4d VOA and the boundary VOA for some 3d rank-0 SCFTs previously observed in the literature. We end with an extensive list of promising open problems.

Marginally deformed AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ and spindle-like orbifolds

Abstract:We study marginal deformations of ${\cal N}=2$, $d=4$ long linear quiver CFTs using the holographic description. We find a two-parameter family of AdS$_5$ solutions that generically break all of supersymmetry, but preserve ${\cal N}=1$ for a particular tuning of the parameters. We study the G-structure of the ${\cal N}=2$ "parent" and the ${\cal N}=1$ backgrounds and carefully discuss the quantisation of charges in all cases. For the ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=0$ cases, a picture emerges with "branes" back-reacted on either a spindle or its higher dimensional analogue. Comments on the marginally deformed dual CFTs are given, together with the study of some observables.

Abstract:In this note we review the construction of topologically gauged M2 branes with 6 supersymmetries and discuss some of its properties. This is done using the 3-algebra formulation thereby covering all possible gauge groups. We will elaborate upon 1) the fundamental identity and its solutions noting, provided these gauged theories describe stacks of branes, the case of a single brane, 2) the chiral point solution to the field equations (occuring even for a single brane) that breaks the superconformal symmetries down to those of AdS_3 (TMG) supergravity, 3) physical parameters and how they scale in the compactification from 11d to 10d and give rise to matter theories in curved space-times, and finally 4) a more speculative comment on "sequential AdS/CFT". Here we propose that the superconformal symmetry breaking in topologically gauged theories leads to the sequence AdS_4/CFT_3 -> AdS_3/CFT_2 and that the higgsing in the 3d boundary theory is related to a change of foliation in the AdS_4 bulk theory.
