Abstract:In [Alekseevsky, Gutt, Manno, Moreno: "A general method to construct invariant PDEs on homogeneous manifolds", Communications in Contemporary Mathematics (2021)] the authors have developed a method for constructing $G$-invariant PDEs imposed on hypersurfaces of an $(n+1)$-dimensional homogeneous space $G/H$, under mild assumptions on the Lie groups $G$. In the present paper the method is applied to the case when $G=\mathsf{PGL}(n+1)$ or $G=\mathsf{Aff}(n+1)$ and the homogeneous space $G/H$ is the $(n+1)$-dimensional projective $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ or affine $\mathbb{A}^{n+1}$ space, respectively. The paper's main result is that projectively or affinely invariant PDEs with $n$ independent and one unknown variables are in one-to-one correspondence with $\mathsf{CO}(d,n-d)$-invariant hypersurfaces of the space of trace-free cubic forms in $n$ variables. Local descriptions are also provided.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to construct \(G\)-invariant partial differential equations (PDEs) on the projective space \(\mathbb{P}^{n + 1}\) and the affine space \(\mathbb{A}^{n + 1}\). Specifically, the authors have already developed a method in the previous article for constructing \(G\)-invariant PDEs on the \((n + 1)\)-dimensional homogeneous space \(G/H\), where \(G\) is a Lie group. This paper applies this method to the cases where \(G=\text{PGL}(n + 1)\) (the projective general linear group) and \(G = \text{Aff}(n + 1)\) (the affine group).
### Main contributions
1. **Constructing \(G\)-invariant PDEs**:
- The main result of the paper is to prove that there is a one - to - one correspondence between projective or affine - invariant PDEs and hypersurfaces in the space of \(\text{CO}(d, n - d)\)-invariant traceless cubic forms. Here, \(\text{CO}(d, n - d)\) represents the conformal transformation group on \(\mathbb{R}^n\) with metric signature \((d, n - d)\).
2. **Local description**:
- The paper also provides a local coordinate description of these PDEs and pays special attention to the case where \(n = 2\).
### Technical details
- **Projective space \(\mathbb{P}^{n+1}\)**:
- The author considered the action of \(\text{SL}(n + 2)\) on \(J^\ell(n,\mathbb{P}^{n+1})\) and calculated the corresponding stabilizer groups.
- By analyzing these stabilizer groups, the author obtained the specific form of projective - invariant PDEs.
- **Affine space \(\mathbb{A}^{n+1}\)**:
- The author considered the action of \(\text{Aff}(n + 1)\) on \(J^\ell(n,\mathbb{A}^{n+1})\) and calculated the corresponding stabilizer groups.
- By a similar method, the author obtained the specific form of affine - invariant PDEs.
### Mathematical tools
- **Projective and affine geometry**:
- The paper uses the basic concepts of projective and affine geometry, such as projective space, affine space, projective coordinates and affine coordinates.
- **Lie groups and Lie algebras**:
- The paper utilizes the theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras, especially the representation theory of \(\text{SL}(n + 2)\) and \(\text{Aff}(n + 1)\).
- **Projective and affine invariants**:
- The paper discusses the concepts of projective and affine invariants, such as the Fubini - Pick invariant, and shows how these invariants are related to PDEs.
### Conclusion
By the above methods, the author successfully constructed projective and affine - invariant PDEs and revealed the profound connection between these PDEs and the space of traceless cubic forms. This result not only enriches the research of projective and affine geometry, but also provides a theoretical basis for further studying the properties and applications of these PDEs.
