Abstract:We construct dendrites with endpoint sets isometric to any totally disconnected compact metric space. This allows us to embed zero-dimensional dynamical systems into dendrites and solve a problem regarding Li-Yorke and distributional chaos.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:We give a simple proof that any dendrite map for which the set of endpoints is closed and countable fulfilled Sarnak Möbius disjointness. We further notice that the Smital-Ruelle property can be extended to the class of dendrites with closed and countable endpoints. Our proof use only Dirichlet theorem.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth dendroid in the plane $\mathbb R^2$. We show that each endpoint of $X$ is arcwise accessible from $\mathbb R^2\setminus X$, and that the space of endpoints $E(X)$ has the property of a circle. In the event that $E(X)$ is connected, we call $X$ a *Bellamy dendroid*. We prove that if $E(X)$ is 1-dimensional, then $X$ contains a Bellamy dendroid or a Cantor set of arcs. In particular, if $E(X)$ totally disconnected and 1-dimensional, then $X$ is non-Suslinian. An example is constructed to show that this is false outside the plane.

Abstract:Progress toward characterization of structural and biophysical properties of neural dendrites together with recent findings emphasizing their role in neural computation, has propelled growing interest in refining existing theoretical models of electrical propagation in dendrites while advocating novel analytic tools. In this paper we focus on the cable equation describing electric propagation in dendrites with different geometry. When the geometry is cylindrical we show that the cable equation is invariant under the Schrödinger group and by using the dendrite parameters, a representation of the Schrödinger algebra is provided. Furthermore, when the geometry profile is parabolic we show that the cable equation is equivalent to the Schrödinger equation for the 1-dimensional free particle, which is invariant under the Schrödinger group. Moreover, we show that there is a family of dendrite geometries for which the cable equation is equivalent to the Schrödinger equation for the 1-dimensional conformal quantum mechanics.

Abstract:The dynamics by iteration of a function on a compact metric space, sometimes called a cascade, can be extended to the dynamics of a closed relation on such a space. Here we apply this relation dynamics to study semiflows (and their relation extension) as well as hybrid dynamical systems which combine both continuous time and discrete time dynamics. In a unified way we describe the attractor-repeller structure, Conley's chain recurrence relation and the construction of Lyapunov functions for all of these systems.

Abstract:Neurons compute by integrating spatiotemporal excitatory (E) and inhibitory (I) synaptic inputs received from the dendrites. The investigation of dendritic integration is crucial for understanding neuronal information processing. Yet quantitative rules of dendritic integration and their mathematical modeling remain to be fully elucidated. Here neuronal dendritic integration is investigated by using theoretical and computational approaches. Based on the passive cable theory, a PDE‐based cable neuron model with spatially branched dendritic structure is introduced to describe the neuronal subthreshold membrane potential dynamics, and the analytical solutions in response to conductance‐based synaptic inputs are derived. Using the analytical solutions, a bilinear dendritic integration rule is identified, and it characterizes the change of somatic membrane potential when receiving multiple spatiotemporal synaptic inputs from the dendrites. In addition, the PDE‐based cable neuron model is reduced to an ODE‐based point‐neuron model with the feature of bilinear dendritic integration inherited, thus providing an efficient computational framework of neuronal simulation incorporating certain important dendritic functions. The above results are further extended to active dendrites by numerical verification in realistic neuron simulations. Our work provides a comprehensive and systematic theoretical and computational framework for the study of spatial neuron dynamics. © 2021 The Authors. Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a higher rank lattice acting on a nondegenerate dendrite $X$ with no infinite order points. We show that there exists a nondegenerate subdendrite $Y$ which is $\Gamma$-invariant and satisfies the following items: (1) There is an inverse system of finite actions $\{(Y_i, \Gamma):i=1,2,3,\cdots\}$ with monotone bonding maps $\phi_i: Y_{i+1}\rightarrow Y_i$ and with each $Y_i$ being a dendrite, such that $(Y, \Gamma|Y)$ is topologically conjugate to the inverse limit $(\underset{\longleftarrow}{\lim}(Y_i, \Gamma), \Gamma)$. Abstract:Glasner and Megrelishvili proved that every continuous action of a topological group $G$ on a dendrite $X$ is tame. We produce two examples of an action on a dendrite which is not $\mathrm{tame}_1$, answering a question they raised. We then show that actions on dendrites have $\beta$-rank at most $2$ and produce examples of tame metric dynamical systems of $\beta$-rank $\alpha$ for any $\alpha<\omega_1$, answering another question of Glasner and Megrelishvili.

Abstract:We study a class of one-dimensional full branch maps introduced in Coates et al. (Commun Math Phys 402(2):1845–1878, 2023), admitting two indifferent fixed points as well as critical points and/or singularities with unbounded derivative. We show that can be partitioned into 3 pairwise disjoint subfamilies such that all have a unique physical measure equivalent to Lebesgue, all have a physical measure which is a Dirac- measure on one of the (repelling) fixed points, and all are non-statistical and in particular have no physical measure. Moreover we show that these subfamilies are intermingled : they can all be approximated by maps in the other subfamilies in natural topologies.

Abstract:In the present note we focus on dynamics on the Gehman dendrite $\mathcal{G}$. It is well-known that the set of its endpoints is homeomorphic to a standard Cantor ternary set. For any given surjective Cantor system $\mathcal{C}$ we provide constructions of (i) a mixing but not exact and (ii) an exact map on $\mathcal{G}$, such that in both cases the subsystem formed by $\text{End}(\mathcal{G})$ is conjugate to the initially chosen system on $\mathcal{C}$.

Abstract:We study a class of nonlocal, energy-driven dynamical models that govern the motion of closed, embedded curves from both an energetic and dynamical perspective. Our energetic results provide a variety of ways to understand physically motivated energetic models in terms of more classical, combinatorial measures of complexity for embedded curves. This line of investigation culminates in a family of complexity bounds that relate a rather broad class of models to a generalized, or weighted, variant of the crossing number. Our dynamic results include global well-posedness of the associated partial differential equations, regularity of equilibria for these flows as well as a more detailed investigation of dynamics near such equilibria. Finally, we explore a few global dynamical properties of these models numerically.

Abstract:We show that if $X$ is a separable locally compact Hausdorff connected space with fewer than $\mathfrak c$ non-cut points, then $X$ embeds into a dendrite $D\subseteq \mathbb R ^2$, and the set of non-cut points of $X$ is a nowhere dense $G_\delta$-set. We then prove a Tychonoff cut-point space $X$ is weakly orderable if and only if $\beta X$ is an irreducible continuum. Finally, we show every separable metrizable cut-point space densely embeds into a reducible continuum with no cut points. By contrast, there is a Tychonoff cut-point space each of whose compactifications has the same cut point. The example raises some questions about persistent cut points in Tychonoff spaces.

Abstract:We propose a high dimensional generalisation of the standard Klein bottle, going beyond those considered previously. We address the problem of generating continuous scalar fields (distributions) and dynamical systems (flows) on such state spaces, which can provide a rich source of examples for future investigations. We consider a class of high dimensional dynamical systems that model distributed information processing within the human cortex, which may be capable of exhibiting some Klein bottle symmetries. We deploy topological data analytic methods in order to analyse their resulting dynamical behaviour, and suggesting future challenges.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a generalization of foliated manifolds in the context of metric spaces. In particular we study dendritations of surfaces that are defined as maximal atlases of compatible upper semicontinuous local decompositions into dendrites. Applications are given in modeling stable and unstable sets of topological dynamical systems. For this purpose new forms of expansivity are defined.

Abstract:In this paper, we study dynamics of maps on quasi-graphs and characterise their invariant measures. In particular, we prove that every invariant measure of a quasi-graph map with zero topological entropy has discrete spectrum. Additionally, we obtain an analog of Llibre–Misiurewicz’s result relating positive topological entropy with existence of topological horseshoes. We also study dynamics on dendrites and show that if a continuous map on a dendrite whose set of all endpoints is closed and has only finitely many accumulation points, has zero topological entropy, then every invariant measure supported on an orbit closure has discrete spectrum.

Abstract:Neurons rely on the interplay between dendritic morphology and ion channels to transform synaptic inputs into a sequence of somatic spikes. Detailed biophysical models with active dendrites have been instrumental in exploring this interaction. However, such models can be challenging to understand and validate due to the large number of parameters involved. In this work, we introduce — a toolbox designed to illuminate how morpho-electric properties map to dendritic events and how these dendritic events shape neuronal output. features a web-based graphical interface, where users can explore single-cell neuronal models and adjust their morphological and biophysical parameters with real-time visual feedback. In particular, is tailored to interactive fine-tuning of subcellular properties, such as kinetics and distributions of ion channels, as well as the dynamics and allocation of synaptic inputs. It offers an automated approach for standardization and refinement of voltage-gated ion channel models to make them more comprehensible and reusable. The toolbox allows users to run various experimental protocols and record data from multiple dendritic and somatic locations, thereby enhancing model validation. Finally, it aims to deepen our understanding of which dendritic properties are essential for neuronal input-output transformation. Using this knowledge, one can simplify models through a built-in morphology reduction algorithm and export them for further use in faster, more interpretable networks. With , users can gain better control and understanding of their models, advancing research on dendritic input-output transformations and their role in network computations.

Abstract:Mathematical modeling has broad applications in neuroscience whether modeling the dynamics of a single synapse or an entire network of neurons. In Part I, we model vesicle replenishment and release at the photoreceptor synapse to better understand how visual information is processed. In Part II, we explore a simple model of neural networks with the goal of discovering how network structure shapes the behavior of the network. To fully understand how visual information is processed requires an understanding of the way signals are transformed at the ribbon synapse of photoreceptor neurons. These synapses possess a ribbon-like structure capable of storing around 100 synaptic vesicles, allowing graded responses through the release of different numbers of vesicles in response to visual input. These responses depend critically on the ability of the ribbon to replenish itself as ribbon sites empty upon release. The rate of vesicle replenishment is thus an important factor in shaping neural coding in the retina. In collaboration with experimental neuroscientists we developed a mathematical model to describe the dynamics of vesicle release and replenishment at the ribbon synapse. To learn more about how network architecture shapes the dynamics of the network, we study a specific type of threshold-linear network that is constructed from a simple directed graph. The network construction guarantees that differences in dynamics arise solely from differences in the connectivity of the underlying graph. By design, the activity of these networks is bounded and there are no stable fixed points. Computational experiments show that most of these networks yield limit cycles where the neurons fire in sequence. We devised an algorithm to predict the sequence of firing using the structure of the underlying graph. Using the algorithm we classify all the networks of this type on five or fewer nodes.
Dynamics of non-autonomous systems with nested invariant cone structure and its applications

Abstract:The current paper is devoted to the investigation of the influence of nested invariant cone structure on the dynamics, in the context of non-autonomous (time almost periodic)cases. We first prove that the nested invariant cone structure can persistent under C1 perturbations; and the dynamics of the omega-limit set of any precompact orbit can be reduced to the dynamics of a compact invariant of a suitable finite dimensional system(see Theorem 2.1). In some special cases, the dynamics of any omega-limit set generated by the skew product semiflow of such a system is similar to a one-dimensional system, that is, the omega-limit set contains at most two minimal sets, and any minimal set is an almost automorphic extension of its base flow(a universal phenomenon in multi-frequency driven systems, introduced by S. Bochner), these results are also correct for such systems under C1 small perturbations(see Theorems 2.2, 2.3). To our best knowledge, it is the first paper to touch the global dynamics of abstract non-autonomous systems with invariant nested cones; the setting is general, since it contains an autonomous system plus an almost-periodic perturbation term, and a periodic system with another periodic perturbation term (these two periods are irrationally dependent)as special cases. The results can be viewed as a generalization of important works of W. Shen and Y. Yi(1995 J. Differential Equations 122 114-136) for scalar parabolic equations with separated boundary conditions, Y. Wang(2007 Nonlinearity 20 831-843) for tridiagonal competitive cooperative systems(see Section 4).

Abstract:Formal Laplace operators are analyzed for a large class of resistance networks with vertex weights. The graphs are completed with respect to the minimal resistance path metric. Compactness and a novel connectivity hypothesis for the completed graphs play an essential role. A version of the Dirichlet problem is solved. Self adjoint Laplace operators and the probability semigroups they generate are constructed using reflecting and absorbing conditions on subsets of the graph boundary.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the inverse dynamic problem for the Dirac system on finite metric tree graphs. Our main goal is to recover the topology (connectivity) of a tree, lengths of edges, and a matrix potential function on each edge. We use the dynamic response operator as our inverse data and apply the Leaf peeling method. In addition, we present a new dynamic algorithm to solve the forward problem for the Dirac system on general finite metric graphs.
