Abstract:We study the quantum Zeno effect (QZE) and quantum anti-Zeno effect (QAZE) in a two-level system (TLS) interacting with an environment that has 1/f noise. Using a numerically exact method based on the thermofield dynamics theory and the matrix product states, we obtain exact evolutions of the TLS and bath (environment) under repetitive measurements at both zero and finite temperatures. At zero temperature, we observe a transition from a pure QZE in the short time scale to a QZE-QAZE crossover in the long time scale by considering the measurement-induced non-Markovian effect. At finite temperature, we exploit that the thermal fluctuation suppresses the decay of the survival probability in the short time scale, whereas it enhances the decay in the long time scale.

The proof uses a refined I-method originally initiated by Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka and Tao. A polynomial growth bound for the solution is also given.

Abstract:We prove an adiabatic theorem that applies at timescales short of the typical adiabatic limit. Our proof analyzes the stability of solutions to Schrodinger's equation under perturbation. We directly characterize cross-subspace effects of perturbation, which are typically significantly less than suggested by the perturbation's operator norm. This stability has numerous consequences: we can (1) find timescales where the solution of Schrodinger's equation converges to the ground state of a subspace, (2) lower bound the convergence to the global ground state by demonstrating convergence to some other known quantum state, (3) guarantee faster convergence than the standard adiabatic theorem when the ground state of the perturbed Hamiltonian is close to that of the unperturbed Hamiltonian, and (4) bound leakage effects in terms of the global spectral gap when the Hamiltonian is ``stoquastic'' (a $Z$-matrix). Our results can help explain quantum annealing protocols that exhibit faster convergence than is guaranteed by a standard adiabatic theorem. Our upper and lower bounds demonstrate that at timescales short of the adiabatic limit, subspace dynamics can dominate over global dynamics. Thus, we see that, when our results apply, convergence to particular global target states can be understood as the result of local dynamics.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to developing and analysing a highly accurate conservative method for solving the quantum Zakharov system. The scheme is based on a linearly-implicit compact finite difference discretization and conserve the mass as well as energy in discrete level. Detailed numerical analysis is presented which shows the method is fourth-order accurate in space and second-order accurate in time. Several numerical examples are reported to confirm the conservation properties and high accuracy of the proposed scheme. Finally the compact scheme is applied to study the convergence rate of the quantum Zakharov system to its limiting model in the semi-classical limit.

Abstract:The quantum adiabatic theorem states that if a quantum system starts in an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian, and this Hamiltonian varies sufficiently slowly, the system stays in this eigenstate. We investigate experimentally the conditions that must be fulfilled for this theorem to hold. We show that the traditional adiabatic condition as well as some conditions that were recently suggested are either not sufficient or not necessary. Experimental evidence is presented by a simple experiment using nuclear spins.

Abstract:We revisit the time-adiabatic theorem of quantum mechanics and show that it can be extended to weakly nonlinear situations, that is to nonlinear Schroedinger equations in which either the nonlinear coupling constant or, equivalently, the solution is asymptotically small. To this end, a notion of criticality is introduced at which the linear bound states stay adiabatically stable, but nonlinear effects start to show up at leading order in the form of a slowly varying nonlinear phase modulation. In addition, we prove that in the same regime a class of nonlinear bound states also stays adiabatically stable, at least in terms of spectral projections.

Slow approach to adiabaticity in many-body non-Hermitian systems: the Hatano-Nelson Model

Abstract:We explore the near adiabatic dynamics in a non-Hermitian quantum many-body system by investigating a finite-time ramp of the imaginary vector potential in the interacting Hatano-Nelson model. The excess energy, the Loschmidt echo, and the density imbalance are analyzed using bosonization and exact diagonalization. The energy becomes complex valued, despite the instantaneous Hamiltonian having the same real spectrum throughout. The adiabatic limit is approached very slowly through damped oscillations. The decay scales with $\tau^{-1}$ with $\tau$ the ramp duration, while the oscillation period is $2L/v$ with $v$ the Fermi velocity and $L$ the system length. Yet, without the need for auxiliary controls, a shortcut to adiabaticity is found for ramp times commensurate with the period. Our work highlights the intricate interplay of adiabaticity and non-Hermitian many-body physics.

Abstract:This work is devoted to the stochastic Zakharov system in dimension four, which is the energy-critical dimension. First, we prove local well-posedness in the energy space $H^1\times L^2$ up to the maximal existence time and a blow-up alternative. Second, we prove that for large data solutions exist globally as long as energy and wave mass are below the ground state threshold. Third, we prove a regularization by noise phenomenon: the probability of global existence and scattering goes to one if the strength of the (non-conservative) noise goes to infinity. The proof is based on the refined rescaling approach and a new functional framework, where both Fourier restriction and local smoothing norms are used as well as a (uniform) double endpoint Strichartz and local smoothing inequality for the Schrödinger equation with certain rough and time dependent lower order perturbations.

Abstract:Motivated by a quantum Zeno dynamics in a cavity quantum electrodynamics setting, we study the asymptotics of a family of symbols corresponding to a truncated momentum operator, in the semiclassical limit of vanishing Planck constant $\hbar\to0$ and large quantum number $N\to\infty$, with $\hbar N$ kept fixed. In a suitable topology, the limit is the discontinuous symbol $p\chi_D(x,p)$ where $\chi_D$ is the characteristic function of the classically permitted region $D$ in phase space. A refined analysis shows that the symbol is asymptotically close to the function $p\chi_D^{(N)}(x,p)$, where $\chi_D^{(N)}$ is a smooth version of $\chi_D$ related to the integrated Airy function. We also discuss the limit from a dynamical point of view.

Abstract:We study the three dimensional stochastic Zakharov system in the energy space, where the Schrödinger equation is driven by linear multiplicative noise and the wave equation is driven by additive noise. We prove the well-posedness of the system up to the maximal existence time and provide a blow-up alternative. We further show that the solution exists at least as long as it remains below the ground state. Two main ingredients of our proof are refined rescaling transformations and the normal form method. Moreover, in contrast to the deterministic setting, our functional framework also incorporates the local smoothing estimate for the Schrödinger equation in order to control lower order perturbations arising from the noise. Finally, we prove a regularization by noise result which states that finite time blowup before any given time can be prevented with high probability by adding sufficiently large non-conservative noise. The key point of its proof is an estimate in Strichartz spaces for solutions of a Schrödinger type equation with a nonlocal potential involving the free wave.

Abstract:The quantum adiabatic theorem plays an important role in quantum mechanics. However, counter-examples were produced recently, indicating that their transition probabilities do not converge as predicted by the adiabatic theorem [K. P. Marzlin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 160408 (2004); D. M. Tong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 110407 (2005)]. For a special class of Hamiltonians, we examine the standard criterion for adiabatic evolution experimentally and theoretically, as well as three newly suggested adiabatic conditions. We show that the standard criterion is neither sufficient nor necessary.
Complete positivity violation of the reduced dynamics in higher-order quantum adiabatic elimination

Abstract:This paper discusses quantum adiabatic elimination, which is a model reduction technique for a composite Lindblad system consisting of a fast decaying sub-system coupled to another sub-system with a much slower timescale. Such a system features an invariant manifold that is close to the slow sub-system. This invariant manifold is reached subsequent to the decay of the fast degrees of freedom, after which the slow dynamics follow on it. By parametrizing invariant manifold, the slow dynamics can be simulated via a reduced model. To find the evolution of the reduced state, we perform the asymptotic expansion with respect to the timescale separation. So far, the second-order expansion has mostly been considered. It has then been revealed that the second-order expansion of the reduced dynamics is generally given by a Lindblad equation, which ensures complete positivity of the time evolution. In this paper, we present two examples where complete positivity of the reduced dynamics is violated with higher-order contributions. In the first example, the violation is detected for the evolution of the partial trace without truncation of the asymptotic expansion. The partial trace is not the only way to parametrize the slow dynamics. Concerning this non-uniqueness, it was conjectured in [R. Azouit, F. Chittaro, A. Sarlette, and P. Rouchon, Quantum Sci. Technol. 2, 044011 (2017)] that there exists a parameter choice ensuring complete positivity. With the second example, however, we refute this conjecture by showing that complete positivity cannot be restored in any choice of parametrization. We discuss these results in terms of unavoidable correlations, in the initial states on the invariant slow manifold, between the fast and the slow degrees of freedom.

Heisenberg formulation of adiabatic elimination for open quantum systems with two time-scales

Abstract:Consider an open quantum system governed by a Gorini, Kossakowski, Sudarshan, Lindblad (GKSL) master equation with two times-scales: a fast one, exponentially converging towards a linear subspace of quasi-equilibria; a slow one resulting from perturbations (small arbitrary decoherence and Hamiltonian dynamics). Usually adiabatic elimination is performed in the Schrödinger picture. We propose here an Heisenberg formulation where the invariant operators attached to the fast decay dynamics towards the quasi-equilibria subspace play a key role. Based on geometric singular perturbations, asympotic expansions of the Heisenberg slow dynamics and of the fast invariant linear subspaces are proposed. They exploit Carr's approximation lemma from center-manifold and bifurcation theory. Second-order expansions are detailed and shown to ensure preservation, up to second-order terms, of the trace and complete positivity for the slow dynamics on a slow time-scale. Such expansions can be exploited numerically.

The Burst Mode of Protostellar Accretion

Abstract:We present new numerical simulations in the thin-disk approximation which characterize the burst mode of protostellar accretion. The burst mode begins upon the formation of a centrifugally balanced disk around a newly formed protostar. It is comprised of prolonged quiescent periods of low accretion rate (typically $\la 10^{-7} \Msun$ yr$^{-1}$) which are punctuated by intense bursts of accretion (typically $\ga 10^{-4} \Msun$ yr$^{-1}$, with duration $\la 100$ yr) during which most of the protostellar mass is accumulated. The accretion bursts are associated with the formation of dense protostellar/protoplanetary embryos, which are later driven onto the protostar by the gravitational torques that develop in the disk. Gravitational instability in the disk, driven by continuing infall from the envelope, is shown to be an effective means of transporting angular momentum outward, and mass inward to the protostar. We show that the disk mass always remains significantly less than the central protostar mass throughout this process. The burst phenomenon is robust enough to occur for a variety of initial values of rotation rate, frozen-in (supercritical) magnetic field, and density-temperature relations. Even in cases where the bursts are nearly entirely suppressed, a moderate increase in cloud size or rotation rate can lead to vigorous burst activity. We conclude that most (if not all) protostars undergo a burst mode of evolution during their early accretion history, as inferred empirically from observations of FU Orionis variables.

Abstract:It is expected in physics that the homogeneous quantum Boltzmann equation with Fermi–Dirac or Bose–Einstein statistics and with Maxwell–Boltzmann operator (neglecting effect of the statistics) for the weak coupled gases will converge to the homogeneous Fokker–Planck–Landau equation as the Planck constant $$\hbar $$ tends to zero. In this paper and the upcoming work (He et al. in On semi-classical limit of spatially homogeneous quantum Boltzmann equation: asymptotic expansion, preprint), we will provide a mathematical justification on this semi-classical limit. Key ingredients into the proofs are the new framework to catch the weak projection gradient, which is motivated by Villani (Arch Rational Mech Anal 143(3):273–307, 1998) to identify the H-solutions for Fokker–Planck–Landau equation, and the symmetric structure inside the cubic terms of the collision operators.
From Stochastic Zakharov System to Multiplicative Stochastic Nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger Equation

Abstract:We study the convergence of a Zakharov system driven by a time white noise, colored in space, to a multiplicative stochastic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation, as the ion-sound speed tends to infinity. In the absence of noise, the conservation of energy gives bounds on the solutions, but this evolution becomes singular in the presence of the noise. To overcome this difficulty, we show that the problem may be recasted in the diffusion-approximation framework, and make use of the perturbed test-function method. We also obtain convergence in probability. The result is limited to dimension one, to avoid too much technicalities. As a prerequisite, we prove the existence and uniqueness of regular solutions of the stochastic Zakharov system.

Abstract:A classical-kind phase-space formalism is developed to address the tiny intrinsic dynamical deviation from what is predicted by Wilczek-Zee theorem during quantum adiabatic evolution on degeneracy levels. In this formalism, the Hilbert space and the aggregate of degenerate eigenstates become the classical-kind phase space and a high-dimensional subspace in the phase space, respectively. Compared with the previous analogous study by a different method, the current result is qualitatively different in that the first-order deviation derived here is always perpendicular to the degeneracy subspace. A tripod-scheme Hamiltonian with two degenerate dark states is employed to illustrate the adiabatic deviation with degeneracy levels.
