Abstract:For strongly monotone dynamical systems on a Banach space, we show that the largest Lyapunov exponent $\lambda_{\max}>0$ holds on a shy set in the measure-theoretic sense. This exhibits that strongly monotone dynamical systems admit no observable chaos, the notion of which was formulated by L.S. Young. We further show that such phenomenon of no observable chaos is robust under the $C^1$-perturbation of the systems.

Abstract:We investigate a kind of noise-induced transition to noisy chaos in dynamical systems. Due to similar phenomenological structures of stable hyperbolic attractors excited by various physical realizations from a given stationary random process, a specific Poincaré map is established for stochastically perturbed quasi-Hamiltonian system. Based on this kind of map, various point sets in the Poincaré’s cross-section and dynamical transitions can be analyzed. Results from the customary Duffing oscillator show that, the point sets in the Poincaré’s global cross-section will be highly compressed in one direction, and extend slowly along the deterministic period-doubling bifurcation trail in another direction when the strength of the harmonic excitation is fixed while the strength of the stochastic excitation is slowly increased. This kind of transition is called the noise-induced point-overspreading route to noisy chaos.

Abstract:To investigate the mechanism of chaotic phenomena, we conduct a research on the dynamics of one-dimensional chaotic maps. In this paper, we construct a topological tool which applies to general multimodal maps for the first time. Then we analyze the dynamics of critical orbits with this tool, revealing that the critical orbits behave somewhat periodically. We analogize the iteration of maps to a one-sided shift, and give a probability explanation of Lyapunov exponent by Ergodic Theory, which provides a numerical computation method to calculate this exponent.

Abstract:The non-integrable behavior in one-dimensional generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equations involving high order saturable nonlinearities, which govern the dynamic behavior in a class of physical systems, is investigated numerically. The numerical results illustrate that the high order saturable nonlinearities would lead to chaos, where the irregular homoclinic orbit (HMO) crossings have been observed in phase space. On the other hand, we show that the periodic solutions and solitary waves may exist in such non-integrable continuum Hamiltonian dynamic systems.
Monotone Multivalued Nonautonomous Dynamical Systems

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of nonautonomous multivalued semiflows and their associated pullback attractors. For this kind of dynamical systems we are able to characterize the upper and lower bounds of the attractor as complete trajectories belonging to the attractor, so that all the internal dynamics is confined in this region, which can be described as an interval due to the orderly nature of the processes. Thus, we are able to generalize to this framework previous general results in literature for autonomous multivalued flows or nonautonomous differential equations. We apply our results to a partial differential inclusion with a nonautonomous term, also proving the upper semicontinuity dependence of pullback and global attractors when the time dependent term asymptotically converges to an autonomous multivalued term.

Mixed Monotone Decomposition of Dynamical Systems with Application

Abstract:The notions of mixed monotone decomposition of dynamical systems are introduced. The fundamental idea is to make an elaborate use of the natural growth and decay mechanism inherent in the structure of a dynamical systems to decompose its dynamics into increase and decrease parts, and thereby to constitute an augmented dynamical system as the secalled “two-sided comparison system” of the original one. The corresponding two-sided comparison theorems show that the solution of the comparison system gives lower and upper bounds of that of the original system. Therefore, the properties of a dynamical system can be obtained through the study of its two-sided comparison system. Compared with the conventional comparison method in literature, the mixed monotone decomposition method developed herein takes in a natural way structural properties of dynamical systems into account instead of requiring strict conditions of (quasi-)monotonicity on them, and could yields refined, usually nonsymmetrical, state estimates, and thus is more suitable for systems with nonsymmetrical state constraints. As an application of the method, a sufficient condition is established for the global asymptotic stability of the trivial solution of a class of continuous-time systems with nonsymmetrical state saturation. The condition is given in terms of coefficients and state saturation levels of such systems, and contains as a special case a recent result on systems with symmetric state saturation in literature.

Abstract:Small-world networks are highly clustered networks with small average distance among the nodes. There are many natural and technological networks that present this kind of connections. The on-off intermittency is investigated in small-world networks of chaotic maps in this paper. We show how the small-world topology would affect the on-off intermittency behavior. The distributions of the laminar phase are calculated numerically. The results show that the laminar phases obey power-law distributions.

Abstract:We consider a process $\{X_t\}_{0\leq t\leq 1}$ in a fixed Wiener chaos $\mathcal{H}_n$. We establish some non-degenerate properties and related results for $\{X_t\}_{0\leq t\leq 1}$. As an application, we show that solution to SDE driven by $\{X_t\}_{0\leq t\leq 1}$ admits a density. Our approach relies on an interplay between Malliavin calculus and analysis on Wiener space.

Abstract:We visit a previously proposed discontinuous, two-parameter generalization of the continuous, one-parameter logistic map and present exhaustive numerical studies of the behavior for different values of the two parameters and initial points. In particular, routes to chaos exist that do not exhibit period-doubling whereas period-doubling is the sole route to chaos in the logistic map. Aperiodic maps are found that lead to cobwebs with x = infinity as accumulation points, where every neighborhood contains infinitely many points generated by the map.

Abstract:We prove that if a smooth vector field $F$ of $S^3$ generates a sufficiently complicated heteroclinic knot, the flow also generates infinitely many periodic orbits, which persist under smooth perturbations which preserve the heteroclinic knot. Consequentially, we then associate a Template with the flow dynamics - regardless of whether $F$ satisfies any hyperbolicity condition or not. In addition, inspired by the Thurston-Nielsen Classification Theorem, we also conclude topological criteria for the existence of chaotic dynamics for three-dimensional flows - which we apply to study both the Rössler and Lorenz attractors.

Abstract:A multidimensional chaos is generated by a special initial value problem for the non-autonomous impulsive differential equation. The existence of a chaotic attractor is shown, where density of periodic solutions, sensitivity of solutions and existence of a trajectory dense in the set of all orbits are observed. The chaotic properties of all solutions are discussed. An appropriate example is constructed, where the intermittency phenomenon is indicated. The results of the paper are illustrating that impulsive differential equations may play a special role in the investigation of the complex behavior of dynamical systems, different from that played by continuous dynamics.

Abstract:We study the uniform ergodicity property for non-invertible topological and measure-preserving dynamical systems. It is shown that for topological dynamical systems uniform ergodicity is equivalent to eventually periodicity and that for measure preserving systems it is equivalent to periodicity. To obtain our results, we prove a result on the long-term behavior of lattice homomorphisms that have $1$ isolated in its spectrum.

Abstract:For a general discrete dynamics on a Banach and Hilbert spaces we give necessary and sufficient conditions of the existence of bounded solutions under assumption that the homogeneous difference equation admits an discrete dichotomy on the semi-axes. We consider the so called resonance (critical) case when the uniqueness of solution is disturbed. We show that admissibility can be reformulated in the terms of generalized or pseudo-invertibility. As an application we consider the case when the corresponding dynamical system is e-trichotomy.

Abstract:The famous doubling map (or dyadic transformation) is perhaps the simplest deterministic dynamical system exhibiting chaotic dynamics. It is a piecewise linear time-discrete map on the unit interval with a uniform slope larger than one, hence expanding, with a positive Lyapunov exponent and a uniform invariant density. If the slope is less than one, the map becomes contracting, the Lyapunov exponent is negative, and the density trivially collapses onto a fixed point. Sampling from these two different types of maps at each time step by randomly selecting the expanding one with probability p, and the contracting one with probability 1−p, gives a prototype of a random dynamical system. Here, we calculate the invariant density of this simple random map, as well as its position autocorrelation function, analytically and numerically under variation of p. We find that the map exhibits a non-trivial transition from fully chaotic to completely regular dynamics by generating a long-time anomalous dynamics at a critical sampling probability pc, defined by a zero Lyapunov exponent. This anomalous dynamics is characterized by an infinite invariant density, weak ergodicity breaking, and power-law correlation decay.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study dense chaos and densely chaotic operators on Banach spaces. First, we prove that a dynamical system is densely delta-chaotic for some delta > 0 if and only if it is densely chaotic and sensitive. Meanwhile, we also show that for general dynamical systems, Devaney chaos and dense chaos do not imply each other. Then, by using these results, we have that for a operator defined on a Banach space, dense chaos, dense delta-chaos, generic chaos and generic delta-chaos are equivalent and they are all strictly stronger than Li-Yorke chaos.
Analyzing Topological Mixing and Chaos on Continua with Symbolic Dynamics

Abstract:This work describes the way that topological mixing and chaos in continua, as induced by discrete dynamical systems, can or can't be understood through topological conjugacy with symbolic dynamical systems. For example, there is no symbolic dynamical system that is topologically conjugate to any discrete dynamical system on an entire continuum, and there is no finer topology that can be given to a continuum which simultaneously makes the continuum homeomorphic to a symbolic dynamical system and contains its original topology. However, this paper demonstrates an analytical mechanism by which the existence of topological mixing and/or chaos can be shown through conjugacy with qualitative dynamical systems outside the usual purview of symbolic dynamics. Two examples of this mechanism are demonstrated on classic textbook models of chaotic dynamics; the first proving the existence of topological mixing everywhere in the dyadic map on the interval by showing that there exists a qualitative system that is topologically conjugate to the dyadic map on the interval with a finer topology than the usual Euclidean topology, and the other following a similar approach to demonstrate the existence of Devaney chaos everywhere in the $2$-tent map on the interval. The content is presented in a somewhat self-contained fashion, reiterating some standard results in the field, to aid new learners of topological mixing/chaos.

Abstract:The Rössler system is one of the best known chaotic dynamical systems, generating a chaotic attractor which, by the numerical evidence, arises by a period-doubling route to chaos. In this paper we state and prove a topological criterion for the existence of an attractor for the Rössler system - and then analyze the dynamics of the non-wandering set by reducing the flow to the dynamics of a well-known one dimensional model: the Quadratic Family, $x^2+c$, $-2\leq c\leq\frac{1}{4}$.
